>> catherine:palo alto police - explaining what led to the shooting of man on christmas night. two of their officers were involved. good evening, i'm catherine heenan. >> catherine:the shooting of a mentally palo alto. is raising questions about how police handled the situation. >> catherine:kron 4's dan kerman has our story. >> reporter:it was christmas night when a 9-1-1 call brought palo residential care facility for the mentally ill. >>once they were on the front lawn of the residence they were confronted by the knife wielding suspect in front of the house. >> reporter:palo alto police say the suspect 31 year old william raff, who had moved into the facility earlier in the week, was waving a 9 inch knife, and gave officers little time to calm things down >>in 19 seconds our officers did everything they could to try to de-escalate this situation , they retreated multiple times, they summoned emergency
