it is wet out there. looking at our storm tracker and checking the rain in the bay area today. you can see there are quite a few areas under wet weather. i am anny hong. james fletcher is in the weather center and robin winston is in the traffic center. we will start with james who has quite a bit of rain right now. good morning.>> good morning, anny . we have the front passing overhead an hour ago. we are left with a lot of instability in the wake of it. that is why we are seeing some spotty showers around the pay.

you can see moderate rain with the strongest of the systems so far this season. it has been enough to make these dangers on the roads. i drove on the bay bridge earlier. be very careful. you can see some moderate to heavy rain coming on shore and in san francisco as well we have a cell making its way downtown. we will be tracking that. we have some heavier showers over the bank itself. -- be -- the bay itself. we have light showers sporadic throughout the entire stretch. the delmer bridge too is on the heavier side. the denver in brick -- dumbarton bridge has some decent showers falling at the moment. in the south bay it is hit and miss.

loss altos and sunnyvale are in the clear for now. that will be the story all day long with this off enough again showers throughout the drive. we also have some light rain falling in pleasanton. martinez is seeing some showers and pittsburg is fine but antioch heading into brentwood has some light rain falling. we have some let me showers near petaluma and on that side of 37 you can see some heavy rain falling. that is what we are seen currently on storm tracker 4. we will be left with some cold air and pop up showers. the afternoon forecast will call for scattered showers and possible thunderstorms now and again. but again that is about it. then we will get a break on thursday and looks like

only one with a wind advisory. over to the san mateo bridge it is very quiet coming from the east to be to the peninsula -- east bay to the peninsula. you will also see some nice driving conditions across golden gate this morning. the roads are wet out there, so take it easy on the ramps. make sure you have the headlights and wipers on. it is looking good coming out of the north bay. keep your eye open for debris in the road. we will keep you updated on any hotspots. back to you, anny . breaking news with fire crews rescuing a plumber who fell into a sewer line in oakwood. the man was working in east oakland yesterday afternoon when the land around him gateway and he fell 15 feet below the street.

he was conscious. talking to a group of firefighters, crews were finally able to pull him from the ground at 3 a.m. this morning. 15 hours after he was buried. we are following 10 u.s. navy sailors who were detained who have been released. iran's news agency said the sailors were freed earlier this morning. two small u.s. navy boats were detained after crossing into iran waters. they entered illegally. the u.s. military officials say the boats drifted into the waters after mechanical problems. this comes days before the iran nuclear deal with the put into action. our top story this morning -- the raiders will be staying in oakland at least for now. this is video from yesterday's

the nfl. instead, the city entered a contract with the nfl to close the park and release the site for free. the nfl promised to return the field with current estate or improved conditions by march. happening now, san francisco supervisors are calling for a further visitation anthropology in the case of mario what. -- wood. a video went viral on officers opening fire in september. a meeting with wood's mother in attendance and a formal apology to his mother. the officers involved in the shooting are assigned non- patrol duties and the incident is still under review. one person is dead following a crash on interstate 680 near martinez.

an overturned car was reported on the ramp at 9:45 pm last night. it happened from southbound interstate 682 highway 4. at least one person was pronounced dead at the scene. the roadway was cleared about 1.5 hours later. the victim's identity has not been released. happening now, the search continues on the east bay for a police are calling a sexual predator. police say this man you see here did not and assaulted a 23- year-old woman on the 2300 block of broadway and oakland. the woman had just left -- the club when she was led to a security location. they are investigating whether he is connected with a similar crime that happened in december off of people avenue in oakland. -- piedmont avenue in oakland.

rain moving through the bay area right now. here is a look outside of the golden gate bridge. it is also went -- wet on the san mateo bridge and the bay bridge this one. get the kids in their rain gear as we are seen some wet conditions. >> if we are lucky enough we can get most of this stuff to clear out. it was hectic for me driving in. >> especially -- >> for me on the bay bridge it was coming down pretty good. >> it was rough coming in this one. but that is what we expected. we expected the heaviest of the rain to be falling while most folks were sleeping. we were awake. if you are awake, you are too. if you are hitting the roads in the next half-hour to hour. you are still dealing with some sporadic showers. we have some showers moving off

of the golden gate bridge heading in the way of emeryville and berkeley. we have some light to moderate from san francisco down to to 80 the -- 280. down near hayward as well. to show you dumbarton bridge is you see is pretty active on both sides of the bay. we have palo alto to heavy rain and then it is not too bad in the south bay with a few pop up showers here and again. it is not a big deal in the santa clara valley. we have dublin and pleasanton under five right now with light rain in the pocket of like showers. we have livermore in the clear for now, but this is headed your direction. out to the upper portions of

the state we have walnut creek and concorde with hit or miss showers. that is that we are seeing in the east bay on the north bay we have some shower activity along 37 and some pop up showers near san rafael, at least on its way to san rafael impacting 101 in the next 15 minutes. then we have some sporadic light showers now. that is the current picture andrea. that is the front that pushed itself overnight. we will continue to see that the first half of the day today with the pop up showers now and again and maybe a possible punishment. i want to show you would we are expecting. the clock is set for 5 a.m. by 8:00 kids are getting after school and perhaps you are getting out the door and off to work. we will have a few scattered showers in the east bay and on the peninsula, but nothing

substantial. it will diminish as we headed towards the noon hour. it is mostly cloudy with showers being done by that point and the 6 pm drive home also looking good. early tomorrow morning the rain is nothing but a memory and we will be queuing up for the thursday night into friday storm system. more on that to come. as for today, we have some what roads -- wet roads. it is wendy with oakland at 22 mile-per-hour winds. it looks like 16 mile-per-hour in fairfield. a little breezy for you. this afternoon is mid-50s to upper 50s. it will be cooler than yesterday and that is what we will expect. around the forecast thursday night into friday a weaker system will push through but it will be enough to keep us wet.

welcome back. researchers are finding the air above the canyon in southern california is next with a large amount of leaked natural gas. this could be affecting the state's efforts to reduce emissions. many were evacuating burbank since the leaks were found. tubes attached to the bottom of this plane were able to collect the inner to analyze how it is affected. they found 1000 tons of methane are leaked per day.>> it is the weight of a u.s. navy trooper carrier every month. that much methane is coming out of this hole in the ground.>> the flight data shows the

near an iranian island. sailors were interrogated to make sure they were not -- they are demanding an apology from the u.s. we are tracking the rain this morning. a live look at our storm tracker 4 radar. there are some spotty rain out by the bay area. i am anny hong. we have team coverage tracking the rain this one. robin wilson is in the traffic center tracking the morning commute. he will start with james. it is still pretty widespread that it is very hit or miss as you can see. we have some rain in the north bay and on the peninsula. it is not as encompassing as it was this morning when the front pass overhead. it was really a blanket of the green and yellow here on the map. everybody was getting a pretty healthy dose of it. things are beginning to break up nicely.

the line is pushing through oakland right now. the diagonal will continue to push off the side of your screen. we will see this impacting more portions of highway 24 in berkeley and also portions of interstate and also portions of interstate 880 and 580. down farther south we have the san mateo bridge with light to moderate rain and some rain over the dumbarton bridge. so things are pretty dicey at that point. and then it is just toward a sporadic light showers in the south bay. we have maybe a few neighborhoods out in sunnyvale getting some light rain at the moment. the same story for the east bay with rain in livermore and pleasanton and that to the north we have walnut creek and concord getting decent showers. it might be getting some light

showers before moderate rain heading its way and martinez and venetia being hit with a healthy dose of light to moderate rain. speaking of the top part, is go to the north bay where we have things calming down for the moment. that is pretty much it. let me give you a quick look at the conditions outside. it is wet in san francisco. bring the umbrella for the morning right. this one the near as intense as it was earlier over the be. -- the bay . they recorded a 30 mile per hour cast -- ghost -- gust. we still have some stability behind the front, but it looks like things will dissipate nicely into the afternoon. we are not looking for too much in the way of rain after 3:00. they'll be more details in 15

francisco. we've already had a report of flooding in san francisco with the 280 split. be careful if that is your direction. over to the san mateo bridge the camera is wet you. more brake lights to the right side of your screen. get out there now while it is quiet. the major problems on 101. it is a quick 14 minute trip to san mateo. if you have to get north bay this morning it is feeling just fine with no major trouble spots. now back to the desk. anny ? traffic is getting worst in san francisco bidding up to super bowl l. kron 4's justine waldman reports. >> reporter: the streets in downtown are crowded and congested with cars.

>> is going to be awful. >> reporter: now many busy streets will be closed. super bowl festivities will take over causing a class between commuters and an influx of fans. >> there we. ingestion. we are trying to help people not to bring their car into the city but to ride a bike or walk. >> reporter: all day closures will start january 23 until february 12. that will give time for set up and take down of all the staging equipment. at the super bowl city the following streets will be closed to motor vehicles and bicycle traffic. washington street to the ferry plaza, market street, stuart street from market to the ferry plaza and trolleys will be rerouted. the home of the nfl experience, no cars will be allowed on howard street from third to

you often hear about problems with homeless encampment in cities around the bay area. but are the problems because of the people letter homeless? many say you cannot always believe everything you read. stanley roberts explains in this division of -- addition of people behaving badly.>> reporter: if you walk around the park, you might be surprised at what you will find. bicycle parks like this -- you'll find furniture and empty cans. those are the normal things to expect. is part of the golden gate national parks. the problem is occurring to some residents and business owners, the homeless are causing a problem. some believe the homeless are

selling furniture today could be part -- to take to the park. residents are leaving stuff on the corners like tvs and ironing boards. that is what they are caring. >> some guy paid is $40 to the catch they are, but that's it. >> reporter: were so now? >> i don't know. 70 came to pick it up.>> reporter: they have been here for a couple of weeks. supply the homeless are the cause for car break-ins. >> cars are pouring into on a consistent basis and not just on the streets, but in the safeway parking lot.>> reporter: the fact according to police is the people are the homeless but in fact organized theft rings. >> it just seems like recently the past month or two there's been a drastic increase and it has been a lot more in-your-face and less hiding away. >> reporter: yes it has

here we go. let's zoom in and show you what we are talking about. this is some scattered showers with nothing to write home about. in the east bay you can see that 580 near livermore is done with light showers. that is moving into pleasant hill and walnut creek. there is the caldecott tunnel with some moderate to heavy rain coming down hard. we should see that clear in 15 minutes and begin to impact pleasant hill and walnut creek and concord. that is what we are expecting over the next half hour. to the north baby go. the only activity i have been able to find is between novato and toward vallejo. that stretch is getting the wet weather. things are cleaned up nicely in the north bay. the winds have been gusting pretty good. sfo has a pretty good guest

with the half moon bay at a 20 mile guest. -- gust. we will get the update from robin on which bridges are being infected by those chp issued wind advisories. 8:00 and 9:00, we are still looking for scattered showers at that point with temperatures in the low 50s. we will hold onto the rain chance, but that will diminish. the temperatures are in the mid- 50s and will stay that way this afternoon as the daily high. it is mostly cloudy with your forecast at 3 pm with a chance of showers falling up sharply past 3:00. a quick look at the forecast with more coming in a bit. traffic too might be a problem for you. let's see if there any issues.

robin? there are minor crashes. that is of the expect. when you get out there, the roads are slick and the water it the roads. you should the driving at a reduced speed. no major crashes right now with nothing to impact your drivetime around the bay area this one. let's start with your ride from san francisco. there is a high wind advisory in place for the bay bridge and the richland san rafael. the drivetime is still 8 to 10 minutes. we've announced he can beat the morning rush or any major problems that may pop up within the next hour or so. over to the san mateo bridge you can see the rain moving past the camera. it will be a wet commute between the east bay and the peninsula. if you leave now it is only 14 minutes from haywood to san mateo. it is pretty quiet in the north bay. just look out for flooded lanes

. ince san francisco in san francisco you can see the southbound 101 has flooded lanes. if that is working with direction, the on the lookout and use precaution. not only san francisco but all around the bay area, watch out for debris and take it easy on those bridges. back to you, anny . police are investigating to see if there's a link between monday night's shooting and the previous four shootings on interstate 80. monday night the shooting happened on the interstates eastbound lanes near richland parkway. two people were taken to the hospital from gunshot wounds. their injuries are considered not life-threatening. a second car was hit by gunfire injuring a 2-year-old by broken glass. the toddler was treated at the scene.

this is the fifth interstate 80 shooting that has happened in recent months. more than $440 million has been approved to design a section of california's high- speed rail in kern county. the board of fruit the contract on tuesday. it will be 22 miles long and construction of the $68 billion project has been behind schedule as they try to buy land and property owners in the central valley. there is no word on when construction is set to begin. in national news, a convicted killer who the subject of a documentary series is appealing his conviction. stephen a very claims the police filed an and proper warrant and a member of the jury was out to get him. he was wrongfully convicted decades earlier and served 18 years of prison.

we are tracking some areas of rain. james, you have been tracking some moderate to heavy rain? now and again we've had some downpours that come down heavy and hard on the roads. this is the radar view right now. we will see you in on where we are seeing these rains at the heaviest. the first spot is out to the east bay. the livermore valley, we've been tracking some showers. you can see it through livermore down the southern edge mainly. but then also we are seeing some heavy rain impacting the commuters coming from tracy. we have had some showers over danville. heaviest stuff is toward mount diablo. get ready to get what in denver. rent would is also -- brentwood is also dealing with some heavy rain.

afternoon. we are not looking for much warming at all. we did deal with some fog earlier. it looks like things are clearing out nicely. let's give you a quick look at your short-term outlook. tonight he will max out at 58 degrees for the warmest temperature and those rain chances drop off after 3:00. thursday there is a break and friday the rain returns. more that forecast in our extended outlook in a half hour. robin? it is slow. the wet weather is impacting the morning commute. as crews are responding to a number of spindles, they are adding to the normal traffic. there are no problems at the bay bridge, but it is backed up. it is still quiet on the san francisco side. for those who are getting ready to leave now, you'll have to

deal with the heavy traffic on the open side of the bridge. it is less than 15 minutes for that total trip. if you have to use the san mateo bridge, we have this crash here. look at the backup it is causing although it is minor. it is backed up on the southbound. for those who have to leave hayward, it is bumping up that drivetime after the 92 split with a total of 35 minutes from san leandro. another minor spin out is causing a backup at this exit. it happened at the 4:00 hour and it is is keeping your drivetime high with 30 minutes for those coming out of walnut creek to get into the oakland maze. there is better news for those waiting concord. we have a crash on at the 680

split. this driver crashed into a poll. that is gone, but 242 is back. this will impact your commute with the drivetime up to 15 minutes for the total trip from concord to the 680 split. traffic is heavier than normal and the drivers are spitting up. keep that in mind. you need to take it easy and reduce your speed because the roads are slick this morning. there is great concern with this powerful el niño storms could lead to erosion along the coast. we have more weather on the way with trouble spots. most of the areas are armored by the beaches which keep the waves from hitting the bluffs. when the sand goes away and the waves hit, some of those plus starts to fail. some of the most troublesome spots are in the southern areas of the beach and daly city.

a gun use was taken out of a federal park agents car in a murder and in october a gun killed a tourist and a hiker in the rain with an officers done stolen near fisherman's wharf. in november in november 7 was shot and killed from a gun stolen. if the bill passes, officers could be fined up to $1000 for violating that law. if you are hoping to buy a candy or a soda from a vending machine in san francisco you could be out of luck. legislation was introduced yesterday for highly nutritional status. this means no chips or sodas. they say healthier employees are more productive. is the new policy is approved, food items would be less than 200 calories per serving and low in fat and sugar.
