whose body was found in the house and he is the one believed to have shot the 2 police officers. fremont police have confirmed this man gerald villabrille jr. is a suspect wanted for shooting 2 police officers wednesday. 1st during a traffic stop and the 2nd as he was pursued on foot by officers. he was eventually found dead in his home thursday morning. >> he was in the building and was deceased. we also located the firearm in the resident we believe to be the weapon used in the attacks. >> reporter: police say he barricaded himself in this home after shooting the officers. attempts to negotiate with him proved fruitless until officers fired tear gas into the residence at 11 -- 11:15. >> once the gas was discharged the suspect again calling 911 and made contact through the system. >> reporter: the suspect then told them he was armed and had a hostage.

it slowed things down. >> we suspected it was a hoax the entire time. because we were confident that we had all the information at our fingertips regarding who was staying in the home. who owned the home. those people were accounted for. >> reporter: eventually tear gas was used a 2nd time which set the home on fire. >> because the incident was active in the suspect was known to be armed, our actions were measured. and so our initial action was aimed at navarro minimize the fire and made a rescue. >> we made pleaded rescue attempts to get into the house. but he had barricaded himself in a location we were unable to safely get to. >> reporter: the fire was put out at 7:45. in the suspect's body was discovered shortly thereafter. at this point we cannot say whether he died as a result of the fire or of the gun play

between he and the 2nd officer that was shot in this case. again, is something we will determine at a later time and investigators have been on seen all day. the corner is still at this location. in terms of a criminal history, all police would say is that yes, he does have a criminal history. they would not elaborate. >> take a look at what is left of at home. that suspect, gerald villabrille jr. barricaded himself in there for hours before he was killed. you can see the house is nearly leveled and as we pan out you can see on roberts avenue in washington boulevard, that is close to where the shooting happened. this is the scene of the shooting about 1 block away on fremont boulevard. that is the suspects white pickup truck and patrol cars are littered with bullets.

the owner of the fremont home destroyed in the fires currently out of the country. the house has been rented for the past 2.5 years by young couple who has a dog. the homeowners sister-in-law talked to us. >> i was shocked. once i see the picture i knew that was my sister-in-law's house. >> reporter: she says she could not believe what she was seeing on tv. a man accused of shooting 2 police officers barricaded himself inside the house owned by her sister-in-law. she says she found her sister- in-law who is currently in china. and told her what was going on. >> she was shocked. and she didn't know that was happening. she was planning when she comes here to live in the house. not anymore. >> reporter: this is video from a helicopter partnership. here the google earth image on roberts avenue of the house about a year ago, and this is

what's left now. investigators say the structure erupted in flames shortly after a police swat team deployed tear gas in an attempt to get the suspect gerald villabrille jr. to give himself up. >> and they tried to come back home, i think the whole area was locked wn. >> reporter: she manages the property for her sister-in-law. she says the young couple currently renting the home were not there when this happened. but the dog was inside and has perished in the fire. >> they lost everything. you have nothing left. the dog and all of their personal stuff, it's a tragedy. >> reporter: her sister-in-law works as a doctor in china and has owned this property the past 5 years. she is waiting for her us visa to be approved. it was going to be her home in the happen. however, it looks like now she will have to make other plans. take a look this cell phone

the gunman including the fact that he had a list. >> that is what the police are calling it. police say mainak sarkar hedy kill us. including a woman found shot to death in minnesota. you're looking at a photo of mainak sarkar along side the woman. she's been described as his ex- wife. the former ucla doctoral student also attended stanford for time. authorities say he not only killed his former professor but had come to campus with plans to kill another teacher. someone who is not on campus as it turned out. the la police chief says they found the note at his minnesota home. >> a note with names on it indicating a kill list. and william klug was on that list as well that -- as was another ucla professor.

an intense standoff in fremont comes to an end after the suspect who shot two officers was found dead inside a burned- out house. >> that standoff yesterday afternoon started with a traffic stop. they pulled over the suspect. he backed into a patrol car, exchange of gunfire between the officer and the suspect. the first officer was injured in this shooting in the suspect drove off. lisa searched the area and found him 10 minutes later on roberts avenue, another shootout happened in that time a detective was shot. the suspect ran off. here's the intense video of trying to save one of the officers. the standoff continued. the suspect ran into a home and barricaded himself inside. officers describe how the suspect made contact.>> during

the search -- they attempt to get the suspect to leave, we inserted gas into the building. once the gas was discharged, the suspect began calling 911 and made contact with our department to that system. once he called us, we initiated negotiations a further attempt to have him leave. the negotiations were unproductive. >> the home caught fire. the house was completely destroyed by the fire. the suspect was found dead inside. officers say he was hiding in a closet. as of right now, what officer remained in critical condition, the detective is in stable condition. >> it has been an intense time for people in that neighborhood. one guy said he was in a panic because he is trying to get to his family. the family trapped within the barricade.

members. >> either the enforcement policies are not strong enough or they are failing to enforce. >> reporter: i reached out to ice to get their side of the story. he said they cannot comment. the jury recommended a death penalty of a man convicted of murdering an eight- year-old girl and a 22-year-old man in 2013. the suspect was convicted on may 6 of two counts of first- degree murder after shooting both victims in separate incidents. he killed eight-year-old girl after firing 13 shots into an apartment. though shots also injured two other children and their grandmother. he also shot and killed a 22- year-old man in berkeley seven weeks later. the jury deliberated for a day and a half before making their decision. he is scheduled to be sentenced by an alanine at county superior court judge on september 21. eyman's convention center

cincinnati police finished their investigation into the family involves the deadly guerrilla incident at the zoo. >> people are still talking about this. the case in the hands of prosecutors at this point. >> we didn't know for sure at first in investigators were focusing on the family a little boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure or the zoo and we now know it was the family. zoo workers remember they were forced to kill the gorilla because they could not take chances with the boys safety. authorities say the child's mother was with him adjusted notice he had slipped past offense, tumbled into the moat and it's not clear whether the family will face charges. a decision from prosecutors expected soon. as for the zoo, the gorilla exhibit will reopen next week. it will have a new barrier aimed at making it harder to get in. the old pants is coming down.

police officer? that is still to be determined. at this point, investigators remain on the scene at this time, more information should be coming out in the days ahead. live in fremont, kron4 news. >> we are covering the story live from the beginning. we're getting a more clear idea of the timing of all the events and how they linked together. here's what we know. it began with a traffic stop at 1:30 pm. the suspect tried to take off, ramming a police cruiser. that's when the first shooting took place. 10 months later, police encounter him again and as a second shooting. it took several hours before they narrow down the house to where he was located. they say that occurred at 11 pm when the standoff began. when they fired tear gas inside a couple hours later they say the suspect called 911 claiming to have ostrich on the inside even discharged his weapon again. at some point, the house caught fire and burned down. struck out one of the officers is fighting for his life while

he died earlier this morning. he is 44 years old, a san jose resident at a press conference, fremont police department said he had a criminal record other they wouldn't give us specifics on what those crimes were. we conducted a public records search on the suspect and we discovered he was associated with an address along east san antonio street in san jose. i visited that house this afternoon. the people are home but declined to speak with me on camera. there were a lot of people going in and out of the house. some seemed very upset. i saw one woman crying as she came out of the house. we don't know if he lived here or maybe has some family members who live here. there were a lot of people visiting the home this afternoon. the fremont police department has identified the suspect in this case. he is from san jose. our coverage on this breaking news continues on air

the man who killed a professor on the campus of ucla yesterday before taking his own life had a kill list. he drove to los angeles from his home in minnesota. he left a note at the scene in los angeles that led investigators to his home in st. paul. inside the home, investigators found a list of his intended victims. on the list, a woman was found dead in a minneapolis suburb. the other another ucla professor was not on campus yesterday and was not hurt. the list has been described as a kill list. that was the wording put on it. he was heavily armed and prepared to engage multiple victims with the ordinance he had at his disposal. >> police believe they pinned out and vote. they say he posted a blog earlier this year accusing professor of stealing his intellectual property and giving it to another student.

the family of a bay area muralist fatally shot last year has filed a federal claim against the immigration customs enforcement agency otherwise known as ice. the victim is here. the alleged killer is a serial robber. the gun used was stolen out of ice agents car. the claim states the gun was left unsecured rather than in a lockbox which is ice policy. the attorneys for the family say the 2010 government audit down nearly 300 guns were lost by federal agents over a two- year period. that audit recommended the ice policy and storing weapons become more stringent. >> the best policy and practice is that lockbox should have to be mounted physically to the frame of the car. so not only is a lot, but it cannot be removed from the actual vehicle.

either one of those steps would have prevented the staff. unfortunately, no steps were taken. >> the same attorneys filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of a family of a woman fatally shot by gun stolen from a car of another agent last july. seven cisco police officers will be allowed to review video from their body cameras after they give a statement to investigators. the policy had been hotly debated especially concerning officers involved shootings. in december the police commission voted on a policy that would have made it the cheese responsibility in choosing whether or not an officer could look at the video. the new policy approved last night comes of negotiations with union. interim police chief says the deal is part of an effort to get those body cameras on the street faster. the city plans to start giving officers cameras in august.
