covers 12 square miles. mandatory evacuation orders have been issued. there is better news in santa barbara county. that fire has been going on for one week. the sherpa fire has scorched about 8000 acres, 270 homes have been threatened. the good news is tomorrow they will begin lifting those mandatory evacuation orders. the sherpa fire is 70% contained now. new details emerge about the orlando mass shooter's plan to attack the pulse nightclub. they say some of his behavior ahead of the massacre raise a lot of questions. >> reporter: there are a lot of things they are asking questions about. investigators cannot figure out why somebody planning a mass shooting. plane tickets the day before the attack. mateen bought three

>> reporter: today he learned about a troubling suggesting he made during a meeting amongst oakland police officers. >> reporter: multiple police sources confirmed they were present with acting assistant chief, david downing, used racially insist of language with how to handle protesters in oakland. they say this happened over a year ago when down he was a deputy chief. they say they were in a meeting when they heard downing advocating using water canning towards protesters and they received oblivious towards racial overtones. another source told me they were with meeting with downing when he suggested using water hoses against protesters as well. sources tell me in one of these meetings the assistant overseeing the department was present and taking notes. this comes after the subject of

neighborhood and it sounds like there were several people who played the role of good samaritan saturday morning. the sheriff's deputy says the ex-boyfriend climbed over her backyard fence and began attacking her. he was stabbing her with pruning shears and he also had a gun. the next-door neighbor was also outside and heard it all happening.>> i heard her screaming "get out of here! get out of here! go away! and then she started screaming help me, help me, help me!" . by the time he got out of his yard he saw one woman rushing towards the house who had already called 911. he also two other men who had come across the street who had tackled the attacker and pinned him to the ground. the other was helping the victim. she was taken to the hospital with injuries. the sheriff's office did arrive

and arrested charles tooker. they said he had several charges including attempted murder. they say he already had a restraining order against him from his ex-girlfriend. he is in jail right now. the next-door neighbor says the victim has come back home from the hospital. the alleged attacker will be in court tomorrow morning. now to this new at 6:00. three men are under arrest for a rash of robberies. the mend that you see right there pulled off three robberies during a two-hour time period last wednesday. they were able to track down these three guys. all of them face felony charges and are currently behind bars.>> a denied request for federal

>> reporter: this lab uses 3-d scans to simulate midair collisions between drones and planes. manufacturers already test the dangers of birds to airplanes. there are about 14,000 bird strikes a year. a flock of geese famously took down a us airways flight dubbed a miracle on the hudson in 2009. the fear is that drones could do much more damage. >> reporter: which is more dangerous the drone or the bird? >> drones are made of hard components that could do significant damage to the aircraft. what our research is trying to prove or disprove is just how much damage they would do. >> reporter: so researchers try to duplicate a drone hitting a plane at full speed. they shoe components like this through this canon at a rate of 200 miles per hour. it's meant to mimic what would happen if a drone and a plane

the santa clara board of supervisors voted on a new proposal today that would add up to $950 million to address the lack of housing. the issue has become a major concern for people living in san jose. the city of san jose currently has more than 4000 homeless people. san jose residents identified housing as the biggest issue in recent surveys ranking housing higher than crime. the measure would be funded through property taxes by taking just over $12 from every $100,000 in home value. the measure will be on the ballot in november. >> the last powerplant could be nearing its final chapter. today pg&e announced they plan
