legislators to get the legislation passed. he also says that he has been in contact with the victim in this case, and that she supports the change in law. here in palo alto, kron4 news. tell you about amount last that read license plates, something that's become common at intersections in many east bay communities. >> dan is live in danville with more on what city has planned. dan? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. danville is joining other community, we are at sycamore valley road and san ramone value boulevard. this is an intersection that is the main entry point into danville and exit point, and this, plus 12 other intersections will soon have cameras so if you're planning to commit crime, they will capture your license plate. since 2013, the town of danville has seen an uptick in

property crime. up about 10% each year. >> people breaking into homes, businesses and cars, stealing property. >> reporter: now the town counsel has voted install 6 cameras at 1 busy intersections -- 13 busy intersections. one camera will look like this, and give officers a big picture of the scene. the officers will capture every license plate that travels through the intersection. and alert police of facebook a vehicle is stolen or wanted -- if a vehicle is stolen or wanted. >> it's just your license plate. >> reporter: danville mayor says she hopes it will make people think twice about coming to danville to commit crime. >> this is a big instrument. >> reporter: for those who are not deterred, police believe the license plate readers will help them capture those responsible. >> we would go back, and look at the footage for that area, and try to determine the cause

will not share any additional information. >> we do think it's relevant to share they were sent by african- american officers. >> wow! that was my reaction. i was a little taken aback by that. make a statement about the race of the people being investigated was an odd choice. >> reporter: that decision to reveal the ethnicities of city employees involved in an open investigation is something that city council president gibson and city council member at large, capland are questioning. >> what did that mean? and what was the context? delivering that kind of information without a proper context can lead to a lot of unfortunate speculation, because the investigation remains open. we have always been warned when there was an ongoing personnel investigation that we are not allowed to share any information about that. >> reporter: community activists took note of the mayor putting out the race of the lpd officers under investigation for allegedly

taking part in sending and receiving the racially themed text messages. >> we find it interesting she made it a point to say african- american officers. talking about the kkk, and that just in itself seemed ironic, and i bet if it was white officers, she wouldn't have said anything. >> historically, when white people are under investigation, they haven't said the people under investigation are white. >> reporter: rebecca says she's contacted city attorney's office to find ow how the decision was reached to reveal the ethnicity of officers, and if it's allowed. >> just a few minutes ago, we received this statement from the mayor of oakland that says "i am sorry that my intent to be at transparent at possible where we can be in a case involving allegations of racist behavior had the unintended consequence of making our african-american officers feel unfairly singled out. "my comments on june 17 did not

identify the rank or role within the police department of anyone being looked at as part of this investigation. she adds, i'm committed to holding every individual who engaged in any wrongdoing fully accountable regardless of their race, or gender. >> the mayor did try to clarify the controversy surrounding the acting assistant police chief, david downing, about his use of racially insensitive language in 2013. last night, schaaf released a statement acknowledging the incident, which kron4 first reported that downing was in a conversation about water hoses, being used during protests. the mayor says once downing was informed his language could be perceived at racially incentive, he didn't use the term again. kron4 will tran met with people that didn't believe the comments were racially fueled. >> reporter: a city with a heavy african- american population, historically known for protests, and we've seen a lot in the past several years,

david downing's comments to high ranking officials made more than a year ago did not sit well with a lot of people, but they said it was inappropriate but not racially charged. >> i think we all make mistakes, i'm not sure if that was so much racially motor he's rate cyst -- motivated, or he's racist. some people may deem it that way. i don't think so. he could have been making a point. soarer's not exactly sure, but -- so we're not exactly sure. i don't think it was racially. >> when you have police activity that's questionable, you have to look at race, class, we have to look at force, so i'm not sure if that sense if it was racist, but what we do know is that the oakland police department can do a better job, and be more careful in the ways in which it works. >> reporter: the people i spoke

to said if he has a history of making racially insensitive remarks, perhaps they need to revisit this and maybe remove him from that position of acting assistant chief. in the meantime, they're saying let's move on. reporting from oakland, will tran, kron4 news. downing is the first person to be put in the position this month. kron4 broke the news that several police officers will been involved with a call girl when she was underage. then a homicide detective was accused of letting his girl friend write police reports, and then a racist text message scandal was uncovered within the department. downing will still have to report to city administrator lan. a time lapse video that shows how the big fire on mission street spread. it was smoky and destructive, caution dozens -- causing

dozens of people to be displaced. >> reporter: they carried what little they could save, others lined up wearing protective masks, waiting to find out what was left in the rooms. stephanie wilson had just moved in about a month ago. the first home of her own after being homeless for the past three years. she's nervous about what she'll find. >> i'm not going to go into anything. it seems like the -- >> reporter: teresa king was worried about what she would see when getting inside her family's bar, the 3300 club, for the first time since saturday. the fire department says the investigation to what caused the fire is still ongoing. they only know for sure that it started in the building that housed the cole hardware star. the club -- store, the club suffered mostly water damage. >> there's a lot of pictures of my dad in the '40s, and world

democrats are holding a dramatic sit-in to help keep the gun control debate alive in congress. >> mark meredith joins us live from capitol hill, where mark, i understand that the sit-in continues? what's the latest? >> reporter: vicki, it does continue, but close to wrapping up, but that's what house republicans are trying to do, making a maneuver on legislation that would end the sit-in that's been going on since 12:30, but the house democrats trying to force a vote on some measures. they know they don't stand a chance in passing it, but they want an on the record vote. the senate it did it earlier this week. >> it started with a plea -- >> where it our moral leadership? >> reporter: but in minutes,

investigators still trying to figure out more details on what the orlando nightclub shooter was doing the day of the attack. >> also today, a former friend of omar mateen explains why he decided to call the the fbi about some suspicious behavior. catherine heenan has the latest details into that man says he belonged to the same mosque, while he did not initially consider the friend to fit the radical profile, he began to worry about that possibility. this was back in 2014. the man ended you will -- up calling the fbi after a warning. after he heard him make what he considered troubling comments about a radical islamic cleric. >> he brought up the name of a

level, but if you get closer to san jose, that's more of a severe state for our area, and then if you're closer to stockton, looks like it's more of an extreme drought that we're dealing with. so we will continue to update you on this situation, especially as wildfire season continues to go on. so the closer look now at the golden gate bridge. we are going to see lots of sunshine continuing for the next incumbent of hours, that's -- couple of hours. you can see the flag is moving here, so breezy conditions expected for us as well. the high pressure is still in control. we're noticing some cloudiness off the coast here, we do have an area of low pressure that is to the north of us, and that's helping to suppress that ridge of high pressure. that's why some temperatures today were a little cooler than what we saw yesterday. yesterday, was really the peak in our conditions, and as we head into tomorrow, we'll see similar temperatures but by friday, heading into weekend, we will warm up again.

babe. vegetation fire did $100,000 damage and sent two firefighters to the hospital. that fire began yesterday afternoon on b street in fullerton, and out within 30 minutes, but sonoma county officials say it burned a couple of trailers, pickup truck and fence. a woman in one of the trailers did suffer some smoke inhalation and one firefighter had to be treated. everybody is expected to be fine. cause of the fire is under investigation. firefighters in southern california are battling two wildfires, which are very close to one another. more than 1000 firefighters trying to contain one fire in the angeles national for quest. the other -- forest, the other is in the foothills. the two fires have not merged, but they are referring to them both as the san gabriel complex fire. together, the blazes have scorched nearly 5000 acres. >> focusing on the perimeter around the housing areas,

san francisco getting ready to host the annual pride parade. workers are finishing up the floats, going down market street on sunday. pride is hosted every year in san francisco on the last weekend in june. 1 million people are expected to attend the event throughout the city over the weekend. especially the parade. it has dozens of elaborate floats, there will be extra security surrounding the event because of the attack in orlando. if you are a coffee and donut fish maude doe, you might be in for a pleasant surprise. >> the popular chain dunkin' donuts has opened a new chain
