truck actually hitting civilians. >> our other big story tonight, the nightmare unfolding before the eyes of a witness as an 18- ton truck suddenly becomes a weapon of mass destruction. france's third terror attack in the last year and a half leaving 84 people dead, among them 10 children and at least two americans. two uc berkeley students hurt and one still missing tonight more on that part of the story in just a moment. >> justin begins our coverage on the latest in the investigation. justine. >> just like san francisco's emberkadero. a man plowed his truck into the crowd. as people started to flee, he zig tagged for more than a mile. it took 30 minutes for police to stop the rampage and kill

the driver. mid way through his path, the lobby of a luxury hotel became a makeshift hospital. >> it was mass confusion people screaming and running for their lives. >> after night of terror, daybreak brought horrifying images. bodying lay covering the promenade. >> we have to go on. the suspect was a french punition citizen. he was not on any terror watch list. what we're learning is he was not a devout muslim but did have a record of petty crime ands a record of mental instability. whatever his motive, isis was quick to applaud his actions posting this graphic of france

in flames. in washington, president obama mourned the two american victims identified so far. >> a family from texas, a father and young son just is 111 years old there on -- 11 years old there on vacation. their families like many others devastated. >> sean cope land and his 11 year-old son brody are from austin. today a teacher remembers a loving student. >> it's heart breaking. >> french police say the suspect rented the truck their the nice airport on wednesday. they're checking the cameras all over the cities to see if he had accomplices. back to you. >> three university of berkeley california students were injured in that attack and one remains missing tonight. >> live at berkeley with what

we know about these students, dan. >>reporter: university officials as well as friends of this person very concerned the only thing. reports we've heard that he was not hit by the truck and nick is missing and his friends at the university want to know where he is. uc berkeley confirms 20 year- old junior nick leslie is missing following the attack in nice, franks. >> we're doing whatever we can to locate the one missing individual. we're working with the cons let, program director and hope to have a good outcome. he was one of five students taking part in a summer invasion program. three others in the program injured in the attack but not seriously. >> we have two students with a broken leg, one with a broken foot. >> publish report indicate leslie uncle heard from his

friends that the nephew was not hit in the truck in nice but going around to hospitals looking for his nephew. back in cal, leslie was a member of net impact berkeley a student run consulting group and a member of a fraternity. a friend said his disappearance is too difficult to talk about. all over fab, various friends asking for help looking for nick. the university told those who are in this program if they don't want to stay, they can come back early and four people opted to come back early. dan, kron 4 news. >> one of the people we know right in the middle of that attack, a family with two children there on vacation and were watching fireworks and her

first indication of trouble was that large white truck speeding down the boulevard all though it was closed for track. sarah and her son talked to chrono4 news by phone this morning. >> i saw there was people that started running away from that truck so i grabbed both of my kids and we started running away with thousands and thousands of people into little tiny small streets and you could hear children scream ands they were like crying and screaming for mommy and it was incredible. >> then there was like this group of people screaming running everything. my mom was like, just grabbing us and we were running, running and she told me to catch up. >> they're okay but very shaken. president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff for the next four days and all federal buildings including the white house in memory of the victims. they'll keep taking out isis

leaders and defender our homeland. >> stay connected on breaking details from france on kron 4.com or download the kron 4 mobile app. we have a time line of events for the terror attack and a gallery of images coming out of nice on kron 4.com. and in baton rouge, louisiana today, the funeral for 37 year-old alton sterling. she was shot and killed last tuesday during a struggle with two white police officers outside a convenient store. he had been selling cds. the staff was captured on two cell phones and sparked outrage among the african american community among others. the owner of the store where the shooting happened spoke. he said sterling was his friend and called him the meaning of southern hospitalities. protestors supporting the black lives movement holding rallies in 30 cities.

>> we find kron 4. >>reporter: grant and catherine, the protest was supposed to start around 4 this afternoon but by 415, only a handful of people but by since then, the crowd has grown. several dozen people out here and a few moment ago, they were chanting black lives matter. protestors vow to keep this a peaceful demonstration. that's the best way to get their point across and that is that black lives matter. all lives matter they say. protestors say they're here to speak out against police brutality. one woman inspired to come out here because of the dallas massacre and violence against cops can want right either. others in support of the victims in the orlando shooting in the past. these protestors have marched through the street ands tried to disrupt traffic but that's not happening now. police are keeping an eye on things the.

he's a commentator. might recognize him from his stand up act and examine difficult travels shows and he has an emmy nominated show on cnn. he enjoys mixing it up in order to get all of us to think. >> i'm a fan of black lives matter, protests, all of it. on the other side, a lot of people don't want to have the conversation at all. for me, this is to wake some of these people up and say if we don't have it, this is what we can have. a lot of white people think the clan left a long time ago and it's history. us black people know it's still here and a lot of people say huh, i didn't know that was going on. >> what is that t-shirt he's wearing? that is one of the things i'll tell you about.

occupation. here at the animal services say this is the first time something like this has happened here. kron 4 news. >> dozens of people lined the steps at city hall in an attempt to recall mayor ed lee. earlier this week. the group filed a notice to the department of elections to get the recall on the ballot. the group needs 47,000 valid signatures to even qualify for the ballot. it's demanding the recall of lee for a number of reasons. >> he's failed the people of san francisco in many ways from not handing a racist police department that was murdering and sending racist tex scandals and implemented in the sex scandal with the underage sex worker with opd and a number of officers named in that. had his head in the sand when the hunger strikers demand he do something about the chief of police. nothing about affordable

people out on the streets, that's been the case. thousands of people flooding the streets in turkey right now, the capital city as the military claims to have stage add coop. >> we're getting conflicting information, not surprisingly. just a few minutes ago, a top turkish official claiming that the coop was not successful. he -- the military wants to appear to be in control so we don't know if this is true. the military boss is back in power and has things under control. however, reporters are pointing out that chief of the military has not appear inside public yet so remains to be seen what exactly is happening. >> the government is saying that the coo is unsuccessful when the military is saying that as well, it'll be easier to believe. chaos in the streets. 17 police officers reportedly

navigate. no word on what caused that sink hole. to a story we brought you last night on chrono4 news at 5, an alarm clock is said to be to blame for evacuation ins an rv park in windsor. firefighters were called to an rv park yesterday afternoon. when aarrived, they found an area of scorched grass outside two large buses. went inside to make sure the fire was out. that is where they found an alarm clocked wire today what looks like sticks of dynamite. more than 30 people forced to leave their homes. that evacuation order called off and the bomb squad determined the device was not actually a bomb. no word on potential charges. the family trying to prove the oakland teenager is not brain dead. they will have another chance to argue that in court. the family's lawyer said at motion on an offset eye data base county superior -- almeida

a 12 year-old girl in texas led police on a high speed

pursuit. they found her 7 year-old sister in the car with her when they finally stopped her. the chase reached staggering speeds. >> 120 miles per hour that's how fast police had to drive catch up to that white car. behind the wheel, not a hardened criminal but a 12 year- old girl. as she dodges cars, her 7 year- old sister next to her in the front seat. the girl was stopped after 55- miles. she's been in jail nearly three weeks. >> i'm ready to get this little 12 year-old out of jail. she's been in there coming up 20 days now and it's time. >> but today a judge said no. the girl can't go home because the judge says home isn't safe right now. her grandmother or mother failed a drug test. >> there's a lot more to it than what the public sees. >> the montgomery county attorney doesn't buy that.

they're at 14 and broadway a moment ago. they congregated around 17th and castro. that is 17th street. they are walking above 980. their cross and the overpass right now. traffic has been an issue for people trying to get off of 880. for moments, then shut down the broadway exit. there is six and broadway at that time. people couldn't get off the broadway exit from 880. as you can see there was a short-lived traffic disruption. he she -- you see the 17th street sign right there. they walked east over 17th street. overnight 80 on 17th street and there on the move again and it appears they are trying to disrupt a freeway on- ramp for offramp.

baton. it didn't appear to connect with the devastator. it's unclear what prompted him to do that but this is when a bunch of cruisers from the chp rolled up. this is an attempt to block the protesters from walking on two 980. this is an on-ramp access point . the intersection here if you're familiar with services treats, 17th and brush streets and you can see the 10 officers with chp oakland will go live now because that may give us a broader perspective. to the right there, men and women with the oakland police department. two jurisdictions you can see a crowd that had gathered right there and something of a standoff with police. that scattered a bit. we see the group is marching back across 17th street. that is an overpass running below it. this now 17 and castro.
