but first kron four's charles clifford reports from san francisco with an update on the condition of the mother. around 315 friday afternoon, a 36-year-old woman was struck by a falling tree branch on the edge of washington square park in san francisco's north beach neighborhood. at the time, she was watching her two children..ages 5 and 6.. play at this playground. the branch apparently weighed about 100 pounds and fell roughly 50 feet. the woman was transported to san francisco general hospital and at last check she was in critical condition. when police arrived on scene, they took custody of her two kids, but only briefly. sot the children were reunited with their father and the family is now at the hospital. following the accident, the playground was blocked off and an arborist was called in to inspect the trees. nats crews did find one additional problem branch along columbus avenue and removed it. superivor aaron peskin, who represents the area, says it's

been several years since these trees were inspected and he's requested that the recreation and parks department's arborist inspect the trees. sot and we will have him look at the report and make an assessment and the city attorneys office is on their way and it is obviously a tragedy. that was kron four's charles clifford reporting. now we want to look at ways to protect yourself, your home and your family from tree branches suddenly falling. kron four's rebecca strom is here with warning signs that can help you spot a vulnerable branch. rebecca? >> rebecca:the first thing you want to do is see if the tree passes the eye test. homeowners can look at your trees. and if it looks bad.it likely is a potential problem. arborists also say to pay attention to leaves. if there aren't any when it should be in bloom. chances are the tree is vulnerable. another red flag is if you begin to see mushrooms growing on your trees. it often means the tree is starting to rot. and. keep an eye out if part of the tree is in a "y-shape" with two branches going in different directions at the same spot. the part of the tree that connects those two branches may not be able to support both limbs. back to you at the desk marty.

"it does scare me, because my mom lives right there. my sister sleeps in that room. i worry the same thing could happen to them one day." neighbors say there are plenty of crashes, and that a few years ago another car drove over the curb and onto the same property.and crashed into a second car. now some of them say they want to head to city hall, and demand a couple more stop signs on their street. meanwhile the red cross is putting the garcia family in a hotel for the next month or so while the apartments get fixed. "we hope all of this goes quickly. that they fix it fast, and that we can return to our apartment." >> reporter:"neighbors told me they had heard the driver had some sort of medical episode while driving. police couldn't confirm that for me, but they did say that other eyewitnesses said the truck had been stopped fully, and then suddenly accelerated into the apartment building. nobody said he had been driving recklessly before that. in redwood city, spencer blake, kron four news."
