"it will always take a long time to rebuild after a devastating fire, but here in middletown, groups of out-of-town volunteers are making that process go just a little bit faster." every swish of a roller or brush brings these houses closer to completion. in september of 2015, they were nothing but burned rubble. now, in a town with just two stop lights, rebuilding is under way with the help of hope city - a team made up of various nonprofit organizations. "we're working ona few different houses. this house, the foundation and everything was up. we have done the siding, we started painting at a couple houses. at a house over that way we've done the insulation and the dry wall and they've started doing the mudding and the taping."

americorps has 13 people here from all over the country. "we're coming home. it's a long process." some volunteers are on a two- weeks-on, one-week-off schedule, like this man from southern california.
