good morning and welcome to the kron 4 news weekend. i'm marty gonzalez. here's a quick look at temps this morning. the cold weather continues throughout the bay area. freeze warnings were in place last night. and we are expecting more cold temperatures today. for more on the cold dave spahr joins us. >> reporter: if you aren't the ship party all eaten see little bit of a lesson for michigan. and it will be called will get

skies and temperatures kept lower 50s a day like yesterday so in the cool side. we take a closer inspection and a week ahead. >> marty:and people are looking for many ways to stay warm in this cold bay area weather. but local fire departments are warning people to be careful. kron four's lydia pantazes shows us how to stay safe in the cold. >> reporter:as the temperatures drop. >> :"it's been real cold." >> reporter:people are searching for ways to keep warm. >> :"lots of blankets, extra jackets. extra layers" "we've been cranking the heat up a little more than we like, we want to keep the cost down but ultimately it's pretty important to stay warm and then we've also been using the fire place off and on when we can to get warm." but firefighters are sending out a warning about people using space heaters to warm up. "it can be an efficient way to heat a small area but it's gotta be done safely." some people we spoke with say they won't use them because of the risk. "our concern with that is that if we have space heaters and maybe one of our kids turns it on and they get left on we think it's a little too much of a hazard so we just work with the

heating system that's in the home." but if you do plan on using a space heater. battalion chief jim selover with the san ramon fire department says you should make sure there is 3-feet of open space around your heater. "keep them on a flat stable surface. be very careful when you have kids and pets around them make sure someone is supervising them at all times so they don't touch the heater and get injured or it gets knocked over and starts a fire." >> reporter:and never leave it unattended. "if you're going to leave the room you should turn it off, if you're going to go to bed turn it off, if you're just now purchasing a space heater always look for some of the newer models that have some of the better safety features on it. in san ramon, lyida pantazes

>> marty:a man is in jail this morning in connection with the death of a 23-year-old woman in daly city. police responded to a domestic dispute on fairview avenue in daly city early saturday morning. they found ariana hatami suffering from severe injuries to her head. she died of her injuries at a local hospital. police arrested 23-year old fredrick tran. he is believed to have been dating hatami. neighbors were stunned to learn of the incident. if this incident turns out to be murder. it would mark daly city's first homicide of 20-16. and in the east bay. >> marty:19-year-old desire borela is set to be arraigned tomorrow. she is accused of killing her then boyfriend 22-year-old ian irby. police say borela ran irby over with her car following an argument wednesday in the parking lot of the glenwood apartments in herculues. a witness called to report that she was driving in circles with irby trapped under the car. but by the time officers arrived irby was dead. borela is charged with vehicular manslaughter. her bail is set at 80-thousand dollars. >> marty:breaking news we're

following this morning. at least one person has been shot in oakland. it happened in the 2500 block of mason street, near foothill boulevard. police have not released further information. other breaking news we're following this morning. at least one person is dead following a crash on interstate highway 580 east of altamont. the collison was reported around 4:30 this morning on eastbound 580, just west of west grant line road. stay with us this morning for updates. in other bay area headlines. firefighters this morning are looking into what caused a two- story home in south san francisco to suddenly burst into flames. this is video from the scene. it happened around four in the morning yesterday on bay park circle near sign hill park.

firefighters contained the fire in under an hour. one person suffered minor burns to their hand. the cause of the fire is unknown but firefighters believe the flames originated in the garage. coming up on kron four news weekend. tragedy at a wedding party. a tree fell over and kills at least one person. we'll have the reason officials think the tree might have fallen. and an east bay package theft with a twist. what one homeowner did to plot his revenge against a theif. and coming up next. a decline in customers for wells fargo. we'll have that story after the break.

>> marty:for your money:. here are the stories from the week -- that could impact your bottom line. wells fargo's fake account scandal has done a number on the bank's reputation. the san francisco based bank says it is not attracting as many new customers compared to last year. in november, new customer checking account openings were down 41-percent compared to 2015. the bank's reputation taking the huge hit after the scandal involving the setting up of phony accounts with customer money without their permission. wells fargo agreed to a 185- million- dollar settlement with regulators back in september.

and p-g-and-e's plan to roll out charging stations for electric vehicles won't be quite as big as planned and it could have an effect on monthly bills. state regulators will allow for up to 75-hundred stations. p-g-and-e wanted to install 25- thousand of them. the state would allow the utility to use 130 million dollars in customers' money to pay for the charging stations. the originial plan called for more than 650-million. for the weekned. holiday street fair in berkeley. come out and enjoy art and shop for some gifts. it's all happening on telegraph avenue from 11 to 6. the event is free to attend.

>> marty:covering california. one person is dead this morning and five others are injured after a tree fell at a wedding party in los angeles county. people were taking photos under it's still unclear which member of the wedding party was killed. officials with the l-a county fire department say most of the they say it's possible the tree was affected by the drought , fell.

search for a gunman this morning after a 24-year-old man was shot outside of a popular bowling alley in san mateo. the shooting happened friday night. kron four's philippe djegal reports there are still many unanswered questions. >> reporter: an unusually eventful night in san mateo -- reached a head at around 10 o'clock friday night. after witnesses reported gunshots in the parking lot outside bel mateo bowl. soon after, police had the place surrounded. >> :sot- "i was trying to leave, trying to hangout with some co- workers.and the next thing you know, the whole building is barricaded by police, we couldn't leave." >> reporter:the victim -- a 24- year-old man, who investigators say is at a hospital in serious but stable condition. police say the victim *was inside the bowling alley at some point. but its not clear what led up to the shooting outside. bridge san mateo police say this wasn't a random shooting. investigators say it appears the victim was targeted. and, that this is an isolated incident. >> :sot- "this is our neighborhood bowling alley -- we've been coming here for decades. my wife's in a howling league here -- i love this place." >> reporter:the morning after -- families with young children still showed up to bowl a game or two. the shooting stunned many, seeing as police say violent crimes are uncommon in this part

of town. eric moir is hosting his six- year-old daughter's birthday party here. >> :sot- "what happened last night is obviously a tragedy. but, uh, hey, we know this place is the place to have fun and we're gonna keep doing that." >> reporter:bel mateo bowl general manager sara waddell lewinstein says she appreciates all the support she's received from members of the community who pledge to continue to show up despite what happened friday night. >> :sot- "i want this to stay and safe environment -- that's our number one goal is to keep it safe." >> reporter:investigators have not released any suspect information. police say they haven't ruled out that this case may be gang- related. in san mateo, philippe djegal, kron four news. >> marty:in national news this morning. jurors won't consider dylan roof's mental health as they deliberate on the death penalty. roof filed a notice with a federal judge friday saying he won't call any mental health experts during the penalty phase of his trail starting january third. the same jury that convicted roof of hate crimes and other charges thursday will decide whether he should sentenced to life in prison without parole or the death penalty. roof is acting as his own lawyer in the penalty phase. he is being sentenced for killing nine black charleston church worshippers. s in world headlines. china this morning says it's in the process of retruning an underwater drone it siezed from the u-s. >> marty:the u-s navy released two underwater drones to conduct research in international waters south of china. an unarmed military research

>> marty:in the east bay. one person in hayward who was a consistent victim of package theft finally got fed up and decided to do something about it. they set up a security camera and decoy package to catch the thief in the act. you can see the package thief casually walk up to front door and take the item. he then walks back to the car and puts the package in the passenger seat. what the man doesn't know is that the resident now has video of the crime along with a shot of the license plate. you can see the homeowner run out of the house to confront the man, but the car quickly takes off. >> marty:the homeowner has turned the video over to hayward police. >> marty:in the south bay. police have made multiple arrests in connection with stolen packages in santa clara county. police say the man on the left of your screen 34-year-old james maybin, and an unidentified accomplice broke into a u-p-s storage facility in cupertino.

the suspects stole a number of packages and loaded them into a stolen car. then earlier this month, the pair to the right of maybin, 23- year-old amanda matsuo and 26- year-old marcos cruz were found in saratoga with thousands of dollars worth of stolen boxes. police say there was jewelry, women's clothing, and construction equipment inside those boxes. all four suspects have been arrested and are currently in the santa clara county jail. the ghost ship fire that killed 36 people happened just over two weeks ago. friends and family of those who died in the tragedy continue to honor the victims. kron four's spencer blake was at a club in san francisco's mission district where friends and family remembered the life of one of those victims,

musician chelsea dolan. the pictures.notes.lightsand balloons at the public works s-f told the life story of chelsea faith dolan, an electronic musician who died in the deadly warehouse fire on december second. chelsea, who also performed under the name cherushii, wasn't just a regular performer at clubs and parties in the bay area. her techno and dance music also toured the country with her. "chelsea had one true plan, and she followed it faithfully - do that thing that makes you happy to get out of bed each morning." the night of the ghost ship fire, chelsea's last text to a friend mentioned that she didn't want to be at that gig, and was more in the mood to just hang out. >> :"there are just so many amazing earrings here with no ears to wear them. her cute zebra-print shoes are here by the bed; there's no feet for them." for a while she lived in germany, and ended up making international friendships with several people who came to san francisco for her memorial. partly because of her regular radio shows on cal berkeley's k-a-l-x , she became someone that other bay area musicians knew about before they even met her. >> :"her and i just introduced each other, ya know - 'you're chelsea!' 'and you're osby!' through the years, we hung out every so often."

>> reporter:taking a look at the pictures, slideshows, and handwritten notes, you'd see mentions of chelsea's kindness, and her fierce opposition to those who mistreated others. >> :"i made a promise to my beloved daughter that i will be true to her unique spirit." >> reporter:after the speeches and shared memoriesthe dancefloor was alive with cherushii's music.and probably not for the last time. in san francisco, spencer blake, kron four news. >> marty:many people are now starting to question a new u.s. water law that could have an impact on california. president obama signed new legislation that orders the golden state's federal water project to deliver the maximum amount of water possible to farmers and other users. while farmers welcome the measure, scientists fear it will conflict with state laws meant to ensure enough water for endangered fish. >> marty:in the south bay. police officers arrested two people after they noticed a stolen car in a target parking lot in morgan hill. according to police-- the pair tried to buy items inside the target with stolen credit

cards. inside the car, police found a large amount of stolen mail. officers were able link the stolen credit cards to a burglary at a san jose home wednesday night. and discovered the car had been stolen from a parking lot in hollister. the pair are now facing a string of charges including suspicion of car theft and possession of illegal weapons. police are on the hunt for thieves who stole thousands of dollars worth of mercahndise from a gilroy outlet store. police released these surveillance images of the suspects on your screen. at least three people walked into the hugo boss outlet store on december 11th. >> marty:police say these people took nearly four thousand dollars worth of merchandise before driving off in a black ford expedition with white paper plates. anyone with information about their identies is asked to call gilroy police. on the peninsula. police have charged a man who they say repeatedly sexually assaulted a friend of his two young daughter's. according to the san mateo

county district attorneys office, ronald lauron of south san francisco abused the young girl when the girl was at lauron's house for sleepovers. they say this went on over a 3 year span. the girl eventually told a school counselor who informed her parents. the jury found lauron guilty on 28 counts related to the assaults. he was taken into custody after the guilty verdict was delivered. lauron had been free on bail since 20-14. coming up next on kron four news weekend. bluetooth speakers are a popular gift this holiday season. the best ones you can get for your loved ones, coming up next in the tech report. live look outside. san francisco international airport. a look at temps this morning. it's going to be a cold one this morning.

>> marty:in the east bay. a salon in oakland is inviting needy families into its ship to spread holiday cheer. 17 jewels salon and spa collected toys and gifts and is now ready to give them away. these are pictures of some of the gifts they have collected this year and the festivites at their toy giveaway last year. 17 jewels is inviting local families to come to their salon this friday, december 23rd. the giveaway starts at 5-30 pm at 48-01 telegraph avenue-- oakland. the man who can be credited with saving countless lives has passed away. doctor henry heimlich-- the creator of the heimlich maneuver developed the treatment in 19- 74.

he did it during his time as the director of surgery at jewish hospital in cincinnati. his family released a statement, calling him a "hero to many people around the world." his son says the death resulted from complications following the massive heart attack he suffered at his home last monday. he was 96. in national news. >> marty:people in badin,north carolina are demanding answers after the death of a man who deputies shocked with a taser. it happened thursday morning when 39-year-old marlon lewis called nine-one-one to report that someone was trying to kill him. authorities say lewis was agitated when an officer arrived and there was a fight. when back-up arrived, they shocked the father of two with a taser. lewis then had a heart attack and died at the scene.

an officer was wearing a body camera during the incident. but the footage has yet to be released. the three officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave. four former employees of a florida home depot say they got fired for helping police track down a shoplifter. officials say last month a thief stole nearly one-thousand dollars worth of power tools from a home depot store in the town of palm coast. when the thief tried to flee the scene in a get-away vehicle the four employee's chased him down.

saturday, but believe the crash happened friday night. it happened near the highway 92 connector ramp to northbound u-s highway 1-0-1. officers believe he lost control of his car and collided with the concrete barrier on the east side of the roadway. a man is in jail this morning in connection with the death of a 23-year-old woman in daly city. police responded to a domestic dispute on fairview avenue in daly city early saturday morning. they found ariana hatami suffering from severe injuries to her head. she died of her injuries at a local hospital.

people in badin,north carolina are demanding answers after the death of a man who deputies shocked with a taser. it happened thursday morning when 39-year-old marlon lewis called nine-one-one to report that someone was trying to kill him. authorities say lewis was agitated when an officer arrived and there was a fight. when back-up arrived, they shocked the father of two with a taser. lewis then had a heart attack and died at the scene. an officer was wearing a body camera during the incident. but the footage has yet to be released. the three officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave. four former employees of a florida home depot say they got fired for helping police track down a shoplifter. >> marty:officials say last month a thief stole nearly one- thousand dollars worth of power tools from a home depot store in the town of palm coast. when the thief tried to flee the scene in a get-away vehicle the four employee's chased him down. the employees then tried to get the car's license plate number, which is apparently against company policy.

police arrested 23-year old fredrick tran. he is believed to have been dating hatami. neighbors were stunned to learn of the incident. if this incident turns out to be murder. it would mark daly city's first homicide of 20-16. and in the east bay. 19-year-old desire borela is set to be arraigned tomorrow. she is accused of killing her then boyfriend 22-year-old ian irby. police say borela ran irby over with her car following an argument wednesday in the parking lot of the glenwood apartments in herculues. a witness called to report that she was driving in circles with irby trapped under the car. but by the time officers arrived irby was dead. borela is charged with vehicular manslaughter. her bail is set at 80-thousand dollars. >> marty:breaking news we're following this morning. at least one person has been shot in oakland. it happened in the 2500 block of mason street, near foothill boulevard. police have not released further information. other breaking news we're following this morning. at least one person is dead

following a crash on interstate highway 580 east of altamont. the collison was reported around 4:30 this morning on eastbound 580, just west of west grant line road. stay with us this morning for updates. in other bay area headlines. firefighters this morning are looking into what caused a two- story home in south san francisco to suddenly burst into flames. this is video from the scene. it happened around four in the morning yesterday on bay park circle near sign hill park. firefighters contained the fire in under an hour. one person suffered minor burns to their hand. the cause of the fire is unknown but firefighters believe the flames originated in the garage. coming up on kron four news weekend. tragedy at a wedding party. a tree fell over and kills at least one person. we'll have the reason officials think the tree might have fallen. and an east bay package theft with a twist. what one homeowner did to plot his revenge against a theif. and coming up next. a decline in customers for wells fargo. we'll have that story after the break.

>> reporter:for your money:. here are the stories from the week -- that could impact your bottom line. wells fargo's fake account scandal has done a number on the bank's reputation. >> marty:the san francisco based bank says it is not attracting as many new customers compared to last year. in november, new customer checking account openings were down 41-percent compared to 2015. the bank's reputation taking the huge hit after the scandal involving the setting up of phony accounts with customer money without their permission. wells fargo agreed to a 185- million- dollar settlement with regulators back in september. and p-g-and-e's plan to roll out charging stations for electric vehicles won't be quite as big as planned and it could have an effect on monthly bills. state regulators will allow for up to 75-hundred stations. p-g-and-e wanted to install 25- thousand of them. the state would allow the utility to use 130 million dollars in customers' money to pay for the charging stations. the originial plan called for more than 650-million.
