çááámax 2áááñ good morning and welcome to the kron four mroning news. it is tuesday, january 10. i'm anny hong. here's a live look at our kron 4 tracker. we are continuing to watch the storm around the bay area this morning. çáááannyáááñ[take: on cam] çáááon camáááñ toss to weather and traffic. weather update: another pacific storm system is impacting the bay area today. expect strong, gusty winds and widespread rain. the heaviest rainfall and greatest potential for flooding will occur over the north bay and coastal ranges during the day. lingering showers will be

possible into wednesday with drier conditions likely by the end of the week. it looks like moderate to heavy rain as the cell moves overhead. we are also tracking heavy rains over the valley. it seems to be have been replace with light rain. widespread just about everywhere and it is almost pointless to move around the bay on the radar because every portion is covered in green. the wider view on the satellite radar shows it is really from the south bay all the way up to the oregon border. we have nothing but rain. in fact, we are expecting heavy

rain to fall later this afternoon. as we pull off the chartres, there is moisture that will take all day today. we are looking at brief rain later in the week when all is said and done, we are looking over the next hours for up to two inches. maybe a little more than that in oakland and then as you head to the northbay hills, the totals will be in the two-four inch category. here's a quick look at the life you outside with rain at the

bay bridge. in the next eight hours, nothing but rain. grab your umbrella and make sure you have time getting around. i expect the roads will slow down as more people get out there and start getting where they're going this morning. speaking of the roads and the conditions, let's check in. there is a crash working out of downtown oakland and heading south. traffic has been backing up in both directions. if you have to use the nimitz freeway, heads up for this crash. they may be blocking one lane and the left lane clausing a backup toward the 980 split. as you can see, the rest of the nimitz freeway is doing fine coming out of san leandro. it is a great alternate for you. it is nice and light. take that instead of the nimitz freeway. in san francisco, don't forget the headlights and wipers.

westbound 80 is a smooth ride across the upper deck to downtown. no big problems for 92. a nice ride so far leaving hayward from the nimitz on 292 and now to the 101. so far so good for foster city and san mateo commuters. no problems coming from the northbay. just remember to watch her speeds as you get out there and leave as early as possible. if you don't want to drive on the wet roads, there are mass trend -- there is mass transit. so far no mass transit delays. the only major problem is the crash at oakland which is an overturn. highway four looks great. westbound, no problems for 580. out of livermore to dublin and 101, wyatt commute for morgan hills to san jose. happening now. a major rockslide near saint delano in napa has blocked all lanes of silverado trail this

morning. an advisory was issued yesterday the tour -- before 3:00 in the avenue about this rockslide. the closure on silverado trail between pope street and deer park road. drivers are advised to take zinfandel line to take -- lane to highway 29. this as crews continue to work on repairs this morning. police this morning are trying to figure out if the wet weather played a role in a deadly crash in marin county. a man was found dead after his suv went in -- off the road and into a creek. this is in partnership with abc news. a crash was reported to emergency responders a little after a: 30 yesterday morning. the suv was found submerged in the water -- 8:30 yesterday. the suv was found submerged in the water with the driver's

body inside. no word on what caused the crash. this morning counting crews are bracing for the next storm. on top of that, the king ties her back. -- king tides are back.>> reporter: drivers are being warned. the manzanita park is closed due to high tide flooding. >> that area consistently floods almost anytime there is moderate to heavy rain. >> reporter: marin county is expecting high tide until next monday. this is video of previous flooding at the manzanita park- and-ride. the county wants to avoid stalled vehicles. >> there are extensive portions of the roadway, especially by the park and ride, where you have to slow down or hydroplane.>> reporter: low- lying areas, roadways, underpasses on coastal trails are being coat that's carefully monitored. some are trying to get away from all this rain.

>> i am leaving tomorrow and we say goodbye. >> reporter: this area is known to flood. barricades and signs are posted everywhere. >> maybe it would be better to turn it into some type of car -- park or natural space. i have seen herons in that strip between the park-and-ride on the freeway catching fish and toads.>> reporter: alecia reid, kron 4 news . the rain continues to come down hard causing damage to homes and other buildings. along the russian river, people were using votes to escape the flooding. more than 500 homes in the area are in danger of being flooded. here is helicopter video from our partners at abc news. one homeowner says he is prepared for what is to come.

>> it is and people's front yards and backyards and if the river holds, it will go down and be fine. you just have to watch it and keep your eye on it and don't let it surprise you. we will monitor conditions in the northbay this morning and tell you what you need to know to help you prepare. falling trees are also posing a serious threat around the bay area to lives and property. a woman was held -- hit and killed. trees have crushed homes because of the storms.

welcome back to the kron four morning news. here's a live look at our kron 4 tracker. we are continuing to watch the storm around the bay area this morning. we continue to watch this storm that looks like it will intensify over the next few hours. james has a look at the forecast and it looks like the hardest and most intense rain will be this afternoon? yes, it may be right overhead as you are trying to head home from work and that 5:00 pm-7:00 p.m. time. you need to hold your umbrella especially if you take mass transit and plans to be at a that's plan to be at a muni station or bart station. if you are waiting for the bus to arrive, you want to be protected from the elements. it is raining. widespread at times and then there are pockets of heavy rain moving over oakland.

here is oakland downtown and the oakland hills and highway 24 headed out toward lafayette. that gives you a relation of where this heavy rain is right now. it is moving up and over the hills and will eventually drop down into communities like alamo and walnut creek and pleasanton, for that matter. as i zoom in, these areas in yellow and orange, i took a sample reading of the rainfall rate. in the darker orange, it is coming down at about one half inch per hour. a steady downpour. about one 12:45 third of an inch for this area in yellow. -- one quarter to one/2 one half inch -- to one third inch. in the bayview district, it will impact the bay bridge as well. this will continue to move to the bay and out toward alameda island. we are also tracking showers

over the san mateo bridge. expect downtown hayward to start picking up and rain intensity. this blob of yellow moves over the downtown portions of the city. redwood city also tracking moderate to heavy rain. right near santa cruz and the santa cruz mountains, we are tracking heavy rain onshore and a nice line of heavy rain offshore ready to make its way overhead. the timing of this is in the next half hour. that is what we are tracking with radar. as for what is in store for the rest of the day, we have the teacher cast set and the clocks are set for 7:00. it is body around the bay. as we work toward 9:00, it intensifies again with moderate to heavy pockets embedded in this rain. for noon today, there is no lunch outside. santa rosa blanketed in yellow and orange and a pocket east

bay too with good downpours through the known our. look at 3:00 as kids are getting out of school. do you want to make sure they are protected with rain falling in the east bay and the peninsula and northbay at that time. now look at the commute home. 5:00, it begins to intensify and we are looking at widespread, heavy rain falling across a good part of the bay. here at 7:00, there's a possibility for a thunderstorm. you see the area in red, that indicates torrential rain. be careful if your commute is going to take you down into the 7:00 our. you could run into heavy showers at that point. then overnight, it dies down quite a bit and we will have lingering showers for the overnight hours. we are not out of the woods yet. there is more to come. as a matter of fact, this system is expected to sag down

wednesday and into thursday. we could have more wet weather if that materializes. long story short, by friday, it looks like we will have good weather to enjoy in time for saturday and sunday. here is the weather outlook for tuesday and wednesday. showers could impact is wednesday night and into thursday and we are watching that carefully. temperatures and upper 50s for most of the bay area. we have an inch or two possible around the bay area. that spells problems for the roads of coors and we have robin watching that. hello robin. i am talking a hotspot on the nimitz freeway coming out of downtown oakland. 85 -- 80 s. south of oak street. they are clearing the vehicle from the left lane. if you have to use 880 s., it is causing a backup from right around 980. jamming you up out of downtown.

after that, it is smooth sailing from the coliseum to san leandro. drive time is 15 minutes with the crash blocking to 238. not a bad ride, but that is the direction. you can also hobble -- hop over to 580. do not forget the headlights and the wipers. a nice commute for 80, 580 and highway 101. the bay bridge trip is also wet, but traffic moving at the limit. just remember you need to reduce speed and take it easy on the on and off ramps. nine minutes to fremont street. a great drive time. coming up, we will check on the golden gate bridge and check on drive times. headlines this morning. the cab driver was killed when his taxi lost control. he has been identified as jamal

singh from san leandro. he was killed when his car dashes crashed into the water near the oakland airport around 8:00 sunday morning during the rainstorm. it is unclear what exactly caused the car to go into the water. marine biologist are trying to figure out how and why a dead whale washed up near the oakland waterfront. the female whale was found on saturday and she is tied to appear near angel island this morning. the marine mammal center is trying to find out how it died. she was 40-60 p long. she was either -- feet long. she was either a blue or a fin whale. they cannot figure out how it died until weather conditions improve. heavy hearts in the east bay as friends remember a teacher who was brutally murdered in her home. the uc berkeley student was arrested in connection with the murder in southern california. we have reaction from loved

ones.>> emily -- >> reporter: emily inland -- emily inman was described as an artist and teacher who impacted so many lives. >> it doesn't feel like she is gone because her energy is and her friends and family.>> reporter: emily inman was the young teacher who was killed in her home. a student was charged with stabbing her. robin found out about her death on facebook. >> emily was a unique individual with so much light and gifts to bring to the world.>> reporter: at her work at siena ranch in lafayette, it was a family-owned business where they focused on youth, families, environment and community. nobody at the school wanted to comment on camera. according to the school, emily inamn was a fifth and sixth grade teacher.

>> she work specifically with kids doing outdoor education. she had faith in the youth and saw the youth as being one of the most important part of making the world a better place.>> reporter: on the school website, it says that she lived in the french countryside and then moved to san luis obispo. while she may be physically gone, he says he can still feel her presence. >> a lot of us feel that she is still with us and helping us out from another round. >> reporter: police have not released emotive for the attack. the memorial service is planned in san luis obispo for emilie inman . kron 4 news. a man accused of shooting and killing an orlando police officer. deborah clayton was shooting that shot and killed when she tried to a messed -- arrest a man who was accused of

killing a pregnant woman. orange county deputy norman lewis died in a car accident. lewis was a forward -- former college football player known as big norm by his family and friends. president barack obama will say goodbye and a farewell address from his hometown in chicago. according to the white house, mr. obama is expected to talk about his accomplishments and the challenges that he believes the nation will face moving forward. also happening today, confirmation hearings for donald trump's cabinet pics get underway. among them will be the perspective homeland security secretary john kerry. there will also be senator jeff

sessions. in an unprecedented move, to fellow lawmakers are expected to testify against sessions. cory booker and representative john lewis have concerns about his record. he left a federal judge ships -- judge ship 31 years ago after -- judgeship 31 years ago after being accused of making racial comments. shot to death a long pier 14 in the summer of 2015. the man charged with her murder had been released from jail just months before the shooting. he has been deported several times for various violent crimes. at june -- judge ruled that he did not violate state or federal law by providing deputies from telling when a jail inmate is released. coming up, another box

connection with the storm -- tide in connection with the storm. we will keep you updated through the morning. stay right here on tent -- kron 4 . we have pockets of heavy rain embedded in that. that's the yellow that you see. the green is light rain and then the yellow is moderate rain. orange and red is heavy rain. we are seeing pockets off to the east. let's zoom over and take a quick look. this is near dublin and pleasanton. can you see that? an area of heavy rain following that line over 580 near the interchange. there is also a line of showers impacting oakland hills and working their way over and impacting the san ramon valley. from walnut creek down through sand moron -- san marco -- sand

moron -- sand ramon -- . i will tell you there is more to this than we first thought . we knew it would impact us all to date -- all day today. now it looks like the system to the north that is helping to drive this may sagged down a little bit and it could bring more wet weather to the area wednesday night and into thursday, it is looking like now. we will keep you updated on all of that right here in kron 4 . the weekend still looks great . as to what we can expect out of this system, we are looking at a couple of inches in san francisco and a little more in east bay. more than that as you head north, especially in the coastal hills. northbay could

see 2-4 inches. santa ros is looking at 2.8 inches. here's a life look outside at the streetlights. you can see the rain coming down and it is slick and dangerous out there. here's what you need to know going forward. we are looking at the next eight hours. temperatures not getting out of the upper 50s. we expect the showers to intensify after the new hour and impacting the evening commute. we will explore that in more detail coming up next. race yourself for a wetter and stormier ride home. let's go to robin for a look at the roads. an overturned accident on the nimitz freeway is cleared. 83 s., chp had to run a traffic rake to get it out of the way. at first there was a backup leaving downtown oakland from around 980. now traffic is back up to the limit and it's a good commute on the nimitz freeway into and out of downtown oakland. 15 minutes between 980 and the

238 split. a good ride. heading into san francisco, there is a crowd at the bay bridge toll plaza. only two cash lanes open, but it is only nine minutes to fremont street. on the left it is wide open and the fast track lanes are looking open. it is wet and slippery rolling through san francisco. also if you are getting ready to cross the san mateo bridge, it is wet here as well. no problems on the new -- the nimitz or hayward. a good ride on 880 across west 92 and connecting with the 101 and san mateo. no major accidents or hotspot so far. drive times look good. you should leave early while it is hotspot free. a quick 11 minutes and picking up slightly on west 24. about a 30 minute trip from walnut creek to oakland. the freeway is doing fine and 880 is doing fine.

rolling north out of san jose to 237, that is doing fine. the top story this morning is the massive bay area storms and cleanup. cleanup has been put on hold in many cases as many did -- many are dealing with flooding. take a look at this from the helicopter partnership with a.b. 7 news. look at the home and cars -- abc 7 news. look at the home and cars. at high tide yesterday it crested at 35 feet. it is expected to be higher when high tide comes in today. here is video from south bay where silvis crosses. under four feet of water. hill park is closed this morning. dealing with higher than floor -- higher than normal water

levels. the chp and gilroy says it will take weeks to cleanup and repair this highway -- this mudslide on highway 152. 101 and gilroy has reopened after it was closed in both directions yesterday. northbound lanes of highway 17 are closed this morning because of a rockslide. it is impacting anyone driving north from scotts valley to the santa cruz mountains. the lanes closed first yesterday , as we told you. both northbound lanes are blocked and traffic was moved to the southbound lanes leaving a single lane in each direction. one driver was hospitalized after his car crashed. chp says it is important to drive with extra care during storm or whether that stormy weather. -- stormy weather. be aware of your surroundings at all times. >> reporter: highways --

highway 101 has reopened after a landslide caused a nightmare for commuters. it was closed yesterday and caltrans waited for a temporary barrier to lay along the shore to prevent more dirt and debris from causing issues. make sure you have the mobile app to track the storms today. be the first to know about the storms -- the weather and traffic in your area. it is a free download. rain is good for a drought, but bad for electronics. coming up i will tell you what to do to save your devices. that's coming up on kron 4 news. we look for showers to be around all day long and intensifying to thunderstorms later this evening. i will have the details ahead.

live look at our kron 4 tracker. we are continuing to watch the storm around the welcome back to the kron 4 morning news. the time is 4:38 . we have rain across the bay area this morning. james fletcher will have a look at your full forecast coming up in a few minutes. first, all of this rain is good for a drought, but bad for electronics. if your device gets wet, we have how you can save your phone or tablet. you can use the service i correct which allows a technician to come out and pick up your device and take it back to their labs where they run it through an ultrasonic machine and return it to you the next day. they have a 70 percent success rate. the service is -- cost between 80 and $100 depending on your device. if you want to fix it your free

yourself, this uses little packets that you have probably ignored your whole life and thrown away. the silica gel packets that you find in new product packaging such as clothing and bags and shoes. they are best friend for a wet device. don't throw them away. if your device gets wet, turn it off immediately. the longer it is on, the better the chance it can that's the water can sink down to circuit boards. take it apart and dry the parts with a cotton towel. if you have a phone that you cannot open, like an iphone, try to use a straw to suck the loose water out of the device. place the straw at the openings of the microphone and earphone jack and other openings. you can also put the phone in a ziploc baggie with the silicon

morning news. here's a live look at our kron 4 tracker. we are continuing to watch the storm around the bay area this morning. çáááannyáááñ[take: live] çáááliveáááñ here is a live welcome back. we have wet conditions across the bay area this morning. wet roads here and pretty much everywhere across the area this morning because of widespread rain. definitely a day you want to

stay indoors, if you can and telecommute if you have the option. it does look like the storms will intensify. james fletcher joins us now with a look at what to expect . when do we get a chance to move forward? eventually by this weekend we will start to dry out. we have stormy weather to get through. let's break it down. this is what we are looking at was stormtracker 4. everybody is in the green and we are seeing pockets of heavy rain. we have to zoom into the east bay to get the line of that. showers moving through alamo south of lafayette. the areas in orange are at 4/10 of an inch coming down.

that is what we are seeing which is content -- how intense the storms are. this is clayton at the base of mount diablo where they are getting heavy showers. the line extends to pittsburgh and antioch with the rain coming down along highway four and impacting a good part -- 4 and impacting a good part of the delta. dublin, heavy share is around your area and more on the way. that's what we see at the left and center of your screen with that big blob of yellow barreling down on dublin and pleasanton. showers continue a little longer. let's look at the san mateo bridge. it looks like you will be hit and miss as you cross over the bay. i am also tracking heavier showers on the peninsula. just past half moon bay and headed toward san mateo, there are showers over the peninsula. that's what we are seeing at

the moment. let's look at future cast. let's fast-forward and it looks like things may break up just a touch, potentially, at the 7:00 our. as we head -- hour. as we head into the day, it looks like we will have pockets of heavy rain. at noon, the storms intensify. as the kids get out of school, there will be rain as the kids get out of school. look at this at 7:45. if you are commuting during the 7:00 our, you could -- hour, you could run into torrential down spores. downpours. as we get into the overnight hours, things calm down and there will be a few showers left over. that's what we are tracking for the next 24 hours. we are not out of the woods yet.

it looks like now that part of the low pressure system fueling this may drop to the south and when it does, we could be looking at another burst of wet weather wednesday night and into thursday. all indications are that we should be drying things out and that's what we have in store. a wet day and a half to get through. stay tuned to kron 4 and we will get you through it . here is the seven-day outlook . the weekend looks great. the temperatures don't warm too much and we will hover in the upper to mid 50s or next -- for much of the next seven day period. let's go to robin for the roads. it is quiet out there for now, but it probably will not stay that way. wet roads always leads to an increase in the number of accidents and spin outs in the bay area. use caution, reduce your speed and take it easy. leave as early as you can. checking the san mateo bridge

with a live look at the traffic on 92 west out of hayward. no big trouble spots. or, heading into the peninsula. 14 minutes for that trip. a high wind warning in place for the bay bridge. be careful if you are in a high profile vehicle. we are accident install free. a quick nine minutes from the bottom of the maze to fremont street. the only thing i am tracking is heading into dublin where there is a stalled interchange -- big rake at the interchange. it is blocking one lane causing a minor slowdown. the overall trip out of livermore to dublin is fine. just when you get to the interchange, watch for that at tivoli as they cleared the big rig.

this is still in place from yesterday. highway 17 in both directions from fein hill to sugarloaf. i just got off the phone with chp and asked if there was an alternate and when they would release traffic? they just don't know. there is a lot to clean up with the flooding and the mudslides on 17. avoid this area. as soon as we receive information about the closure, we will pass it on. right now there is no word on reopening. big news with downed trees, power lines and flash flooding. there are other things making headlines caused by her own careless actions. how do you avoid these habits in people behaving badly? >> reporter: big storms in the bay area bring big problems. some of the problems are avoidable. let's use bear island in center city as an example. after a storm it becomes rich

with something else. everything we discard upstream and on the freeways. in the bay area we have something known as storm drains and most drain directly to the bay. it's a good system which keeps the water moving and prevents flooding. there's one tiny problem. everything on the ground ends up in the san francisco bay, including things we don't see. by that, i means top -- mean toxic stuff. it is waiting for the next rain. as it drains into the slough, things like cups from fast food restaurants and even tennis balls end up here. here is a look at the storm drain with the debris waiting to be flushed into the bay. when it is flushed, you can see the trash in the water. i have to admit there's another problem. it's a homeless encampment. some trash comes from the encampment. however, much of the trash comes from us haphazardly -- haphazardly tossing things onto

the street or sidewalk. before you toss something on the ground, remember that not all gets cleaned up and some ends up in the bay and that's bad. in redwood city, stanley roberts, kron 4 news. in the east bay, areas underwater are getting more rain this morning . kron 4 was at east bay and showing us how that's and is showing us how they are preparing for the storm. -- and is showing us how they prepare for the storm. >> reporter: isaac castille was stranded in his house during that time and he was able to watch the water rise as a collected in the dip next to the road.>> it didn't get all the way onto the lawn, but is still impacted drivers.>> reporter: it leads to a flood canal and things were more dire at her place.>> when i got

look at the trip into san francisco. things are quiet at the bay bridge toll plaza. no problems out of oakland, but it is picking up. leave as early as possible in case you run into flooding or an accident. nine minutes from the maze to fremont street. i just called to get an update on the closure on highway 17. i want to make it clear that north town 17 is closed in the santa cruz mountains, but you can get through. they have one-way traffic control on the southbound side. one lane north and one lane south and it's all happening on the southbound side. you can get through and there is no need to worry about an alternate route. expect delays as you head into and out of the santa cruz mountains. onto bay area basketball. the warriors are on the court tonight hosting the miami heat. the western conference player of the week scored 30 points in

can see the rain which is represented in green and also the clouds too. there is more with this system. let's switch over to stormtracker 4 and you can see green across the map. there is a blob of yellow indicating a pocket of heavier rain in the delta and also a few sprinkles of heavier rain. smattering's across the livermore valley as it looks right now. let's doom in as we get closer and. highway 24 with the commute from walnut creek to san francisco, light rain across the entire stretch, as you can see. also showers across oakland and alameda and the entire east bay show line that shoreline. for the dumbarton bridge, a pocket of heavier rain on the east bayside. once you get onto the peninsula, it breaks up just a touch, but not too much. you will deal with it a good deal on 101 and 280.

heavy rain moving through and issues on highway 17 yesterday. it looks like there will be issues once again today if things continue as they are going, which they will. the computer models are in agreement and the radar has verified. rain all day long. we could have storm totals of two inches in san francisco to 2 in san fran -- in san jose. 2.8 inches in santa rosa and hire amounts toward the coastal hills. a lot of rain with this system and it will pack a solid punch over the course of the day today. we may actually be looking at the possibility of thunderstorm activity later tonight. i will break that down in the future cast coming up in just a bit. it could be a little bit on the scary side. right now there are showers across the bay bridge approach

and advisories and warnings in effect. i handed over now. thank you james. wet out there this morning. we have the wind advisories and warnings to mention and also the flash flood watch. flooding is possible with one- two inches for the valley. six inches in the hills. the main concern is the mudslides. there could also be road and river flooding which will continue for today and through tomorrow. the coastal advisory begins this morning at 8:00 and continues through noon thursday. this means flooding as possible for low-lying areas and areas close to the bay shoreline and the coast. we will watch the king tide . the concern could be the seawater on the roads and parking lots. if you can, stay away from the flood areas.

there's a high wind warning that goes into effect at noon today and last until midnight tonight. high wind advisories and warnings in effect for the entire bay area. the advisory includes the valleys. we could see gusts up to 45 miles per hour. for the high wind warning, we could have gusts potentially at 65 miles per hour and that is up in the hills. checking the stormtracker 4. another storm system will bring another shot of active weather. not just for today, but for the next couple of days. it will get more intense through the afternoon. i start the clock at 12:45. check in the future cast, there are scattered showers. most of them light and then a chance for more moisture tomorrow night. you can see rain across the east bay and south bay and even the yellow indicates moderate rain impacting san jose locations and surrounding

neighborhoods. that is through wednesday late night. by thursday morning, we have a good chance to dry out with lingering showers for the morning hours. again, stormy for the next couple of days and then we dry out by friday. a quick check of traffic with robin. are there any hotspots? no hot spots, but some minor accidents working. this is the good news for the ride into san francisco. looking good at the bay bridge toll plaza. about 10 minutes to fremont street. a good time to come on in. there is a spin out on the oakland side near broadway. it may be on fire and cruiser headed to the scene to verify that. it looks like one lane is blocked and there's a minor delay. traffic slow in both directions. i will keep an eye on the crash. westbound 24 in broadway. there's also a closure of highway 17. i will track the drive times coming up in just a bit.

there is a lot of water on the roads. be aware. there's a new storm slamming the bay area. over the weekend, marine -- marin county alone had 600 service calls and road closures and residents without power. there is now a huge sinkhole with only one lane of traffic in both directions. it will be like that for a long time. the office of emergency services is on standby today ready to respond to downed trees, mudslides and downed power lines that have plagued the northbay area in the last couple of days. they are also closely watching the novato creek which swelled over the weekend. it is not going down and that is causing concerns for flooding for residents and businesses. we are in northbay and we will be here all morning long. back to you guys. we have

financial guidance while you're mastering life. from chase. so you can. welcome back to the kron4 morning news. we are tracking the storm hitting it is 5:13 right now. and, looking at the storm right now. the storm of the century. i got to work 45 minutes early because i heard it with the wind howling and i saw the dark spots with the yellow. >> it is not an incredibly bad storm, but it is accumulated -- the cumulative effect with the flooding. james is watching the radar with the rain coming down. how are the roads? there are lots of spin outs. we have a car that spun out and caught fire. >> you would think all that water could put the fire out. it is especially on the sides of the roads.

>> the best bet is to get to work early. coming up at 9:00 or so is the high tide and it will be an abnormally high tide because it will be the king tide that we get a few times each year. it is arriving just as we get all of this rain. you have the elevated seawater level and the run off. we are looking at low-lying roadways especially along the bayshore. a lot of parking lots have water seeping up during high tide and that will be worse with the king tide and the runoff coming down . the wide view on stormtracker 4 shows widespread rain across the bay area. there is a blizzard warning we will talk about as well. let's look at stormtracker 4. it is all green and we have wet weather across the bay with some pockets being heavy. we took a sample ray fall reading earlier and it was coming down at 4/10-one half

inch per hour. it is getting ready to triple off -- trickle off. it is root -- moving through portions of alamo and heavy at times at walnut creek and pleasanton. let bay where it is's body and heavy. in milpitas we have the eastern foothills and all of those areas getting rain as well. look at the san mateo side of the bridge where they are getting a brief pause in the rain. more shower activity to come. in fact, future cast walks us through the timing. widespread rain for the peninsula and then by 9:00 it intensifies in northbay. by noon time, the shower activity is a area wide. when the kids get out of school, we are in the thick of it with heavy rain across the

bay. northbay, east bay, south bay and the peninsula as well. by 5:00 for the drive home tonight, it looks like multiple lines of rain cutting through the bay area. you will have to drive to that nastiness on your way home and it gets worse as you push through. the area in red is a possible thunderstorm. conditions may be right later on to see pop up thunderstorms now and again. if you can, get home early because traffic will be backed up. during the overnight, it dies down and then we look at scattered showers. that is what we are expecting with this storm system. anywhere from 2-4 inches of rain total. we are expecting a good handful of locations around the bay. we are also tracking conditions outside. here is the bay bridge toll plaza with wet weather coming down. we are seeing that all across the bay. i want to point out that we

could get another shot of rain wednesday night and into thursday morning. we will have another impulse to deal with than. friday night and the weekend beyond will look good with the sun coming out and we finally try things out and get this water down and level. let's find out about the roads with robin. people are going way too fast for the wet weather. we have been advising you to slow down all along -- all morning long. this is highway 24 coming out of the caldecott. a driver spun out and crashed into the center divide. that vehicle caught fire. emergency crews are on scene and the three left lanes are blocked. it is backing up behind the scene of the crash and all the way through the caldecott tunnel. if you need to get to oakland, leave early. only one lane open dashes open to squeeze by in. then west of broadway, it is

san jose. darya . let's continue this morning with what is going on in the northbay . police are trying to figure out if wet weather played a role in the deadly crash in marin county. we have a partnership with channel 7 over the scene. you can see where the accident happened and where the car wound up. a man in an suv off the road in marin county. this happened yesterday morning on novato boulevard at hicks valley. the car was submerged and a driver was inside. police are investigating. we are learning about a teacher who was in her home in the east bay. a student was arrested in southern california over the weekend. emilie inman was stat -- found stabbed and killed in her home on friday. police have arrested pablo gomez jr. for killing and stabbing another woman.

down right now. when the colors are more yellow and red, that is when the showers get more intense. areas where we are seeing more red, almost a full inch ng down. we have some intense rain and it is only going to get more intense as we head into the afternoon. we're looking at the possibility of maybe some thunderstorms later today. >> here is futurecast. we are looking at conditions that will be intensifying as we head toward the noon hour. then as we head toward -- beyond that the heavy rains go widespread. these areas get bigger and bigger and start to envelop the day. at 3 pm the kids will be coming home from school in the rain. at 5 pm it will be miserable on the roads. we could be looking at heavy to severe rain across a good bit of the bay. that it really spikes at 7 pm.

that long stretch of traffic. up to 44 minutes getting out. this is the commute direction. it is very slippery around the bay area so be careful and reduce your speed. we could be dealing with a number of spin outs. there is good news for your ride on interstate 17. it is back open with both sides clear. you can see there is slow traffic and people are starting to use it. it is heavy coming out going into the santa cruz mountains. coming up in the next report. in the weather center we are looking at life conditions. a lot of wet weather around the bay. we will update you on both of those regions throughout the morning. as for the bay area we have a

light spread rain. it is not as bad on the peninsula right now. that will change throughout the morning. zooming in quickly here, we have some pockets of rain moving into sausalito now. that was ever rodeo bay just a time ago. jumping all the way to the east bay now, heavy rain moving through antioch's. it is coming down pretty good. rainfall is around one quarter to one inch per hour. in the santa cruz mountains and highway 17, there is a line cutting right through the mountains of rain. right there by riverside grove. we are tracking that, the only major rain we are seeing at the moment. a quick check of the bridges.

no active rain on those right now. the bay bridge and golden gate are seeing some light rain and it will only get heavier through the day. how much rain will we get? it looks like around a couple of inches. those numbers jump as we head to the north day. into the hills along the coastal range we could see for to five inches of rain. you can see those showers coming down right now on those commuters. with this system we do have some watches, warnings, and advisories. back to annie. a lot to cover here. we see quite a bit of concerns over the flash flooding's so a watch has been issued until 4 pm -- 4 am tomorrow morning. the concern is mudslides and river flooding. this covers the entire bay area.

coastal flooding warning is in effect through thursday afternoon. flooding is very likely. the big concern here is with the sea water on the roads and parking lots. watch out for that in low-lying areas. the other whether headline today is the high wind. those will pick up around noon today when the advisories go into effect. those will continue until midnight tonight. winds gusting at 45 in the hills. a couple of days ago we had gusty winds . as kids are heading back to school this week we have a quick check of your forecast. make sure they have umbrellas and they are -- their rain gear.

a man shot and killed in vallejo and the shooter is on the loose this morning. on the map that shows you where it happened last night. it was in an alley and the police got there, they just saw evidence that there was a shooting but not a victim. around the same time a man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound and died at the hospital. new information about a young teacher who was murdered in her home. the suspect is a berkeley student who was arrested over the weekend. 27-year-old emily emmett was found still stabbed and dead inside her home on friday. they have arrested pablo gomez junior for killing her and stabbing another woman. and it was a sixth grade science teacher in lafayette.

welcome back. the big story is the rain through the bay area. you can see the yellow where the heaviest downpours are right now. >> rain is picking up in time for the morning commute. we are watching hot spots.>> it is still blocking three lanes right now.>> right now there are not many closures, the morning commute is the jab and the evening commute is the punch. there will be more intense rain later today and possibly pop up thunderstorms. on the radar right now you can see how active it is along the sierra. more on that to come. here is a live look at the radar. a ribbon of heavy showers working there way across the bay area in that direction. some are coming off shore as well. let's take a closer look. this line of showers moving in

is setting its sights on south alito. heavy rain is about to enter into the next 15 minutes. showers in antioch have pushed forward. the heavy rain near the santa cruz mountains are moving towards the north. working there way up and closer to palo alto. we will track that carefully for you. the wider view shows us to bridges under rain. both were clear earlier but the bay bridge, golden gate bridge continue to be under wet weather. let's look at how much we expect out of this system. we are looking at 2 inches in san francisco to 3 inches in santa rosa. once you get into the hills and along the coast, we could be looking at 4 inches possibly.

welcome back. we are tracking a number of hotspots around the bay area. this crash is wrapping up on westbound 24 near broadway. that was a spin out and the vehicle caught fire. crews are now cleaning up debris and loading that vehicle onto a tow truck. it is causing major delays who have to get to oakland. now it is slowly stretching throughout the edge. it is 75 minutes to make this

trip to oakland and make sure you leave early. i'm tracking and over turned crash in sycamore valley. a traffic alert is in place. we will look at the bridges coming up. the robbery of kim kardashian while in paris looks like it was an inside job. police have just confirmed that and they revealed the chauffeur and the chauffeur's brother were among people that were arrested for robbing kim mckay. she was robbed by a mast gunman, a group of them. they tied her up in her apartment and stole more than 10 million dollars worth of jewelry. including that big diamond ring that she used to wear. investigators say several people they arrested are known to the french police for other robberies. an artist was arrested in connection with the hollywood sign a prank that made it read holly weed.

one over tiburon and to making there direction toward berkeley , kensington i should say. inbound in the map we have more pockets working there way over san francisco. this one is working toward the golden gate bridge. if you will there be there in the next 20 minutes you will be dealing with that overhead. we are also tracking some light rain to heavy rain at times over 580 over the hill here into the valley. if that is part of your commute you have that to deal with. that will probably be gone in the next 10 to 15 minutes. a bigger concern is the south bay, we have heavy showers at times and we are tracking heavier showers over the san mateo bridge. it looks like those showers will be overhead for at least one half hour. future cast is mapping this out

for us. still looking at pockets of heavy rain and then it gets more intense past of the noon hour. you can see the yellow and orange and by 3 pm this afternoon, that heavy rain goes bay area wide. the north bay will be seeing rain all day long. that may be a problem for kids leaving school. it gets more intense for your ride home. radar indicates a more heavy rain to more than half an inch per hour and stronger across the entire bay area. it will be on the intent side with a possibility of a thunderstorm. the red is where the weather gets really nasty, if you can get home try earlier rather than later. through the overnight hours it clears out nicely with scattered showers on tap for wednesday morning. this is a tuesday all day event.

that earlier crash. the other crash is out of the way but the traffic is still there. there is a nasty backup through the tunnel from walnut creek. here is an overturn in sycamore valley. they did not issue a traffic alert for this because they hope to have it removed shortly. it is not causing a major delay. as i zoom out you can see moderate slowing there, not a bad trip and it's 21 minutes from dublin out to concorde. it is wet and crowded at the bay bridge into san francisco. it is still backed up to west grand and is under a high wind advisory. checking in on the richmond center bridge, we are starting to see a backup here. don't forget your headlights and wipers.
