are following... a new executive order from president trump today, slamming the door on the world's refugees.the order blocks any refugee from entering the country for 120 days.and singles out seven muslim countries where no one will be allowed to come to the u=s for any reason.the only exception is for christians fleeing persecution in a muslim country.the president said he is acting to give the homeland security administration time to develop what he called "xtreme vetting" to keep out terrorists. i am establishing new vetting measures to keep radical islamic terrorists out of the united states of america. we don't want 'em here. the u.s. has admitted more than three million refugees since 1975, 80,000 refugees came her in last year alone. the president also met with britain's prime minister ... and talked on the phone with mexico's president. steve aveson is here with the latest

about a possible trade war with mexico ...and how it could affect american consumers. it's been a busy 48 hours ... just yesterday, mexico's president called off a meeting with president trump.and the white house revealed plans to slap a tax mexican imports to pay for a border wall.today the president had a different tone. "we have a really, i think, a very good relationship -- the president and i -- and we had a talk that lasted for about an hour this morning. and we are going to be working on a fair relationship and a new relationship.at a photo op with brtish prime minister theresa may, the president described a friendly phone call this morning with mexico's enrique peqa nieto. but, as you know, mexico with the united states has out negotiated us and beat us to a pulp through our past leaders. they've made us look foolish. we have a trade deficit of $60 billion with mexico. on top of
5:18 pm
that, the border is soft and weak, drugs are pouring in, and i'm not going to let that happen.just yesterday, his press secretary proposed a 20 percent import tax on mexican goods."by doing it that way, we can do $10 billion a year and easily pay for the wall just through that mechanism alone.... that's really going to provide the funding." critics say one problem is that many products imported from mexico are made from materials in this country.cars are one example.mexican oil is shipped to louisiana to be turned into plastic.the plastic is used in dashboards turned out by a factory in the midwest.those dashboards are shipped back to a mexican car assembly line.and the car is exported back to the u=s. according to the u=s chamber of commerce, six million american jobs depend on trade with mexico. and at the end of the day, if that's what's going to happen, american workers suffer. and at the same time consumers suffer because the imports that come from mexico, particularly in food product among others, are ultimately more expensive consumer." president trump did not reveal any new plans to reschedule a face to face meeting with his mexican counterpart, parts of the president's immigration policy are raising concerns in the bay area's restaurant industry.
5:19 pm
kron4's maureen kelly talked to those who are worried that a crackdown on undocumented workers could create even more of a labor shortage, and making dining out, even more expensive. we don't need to be cracking down the golden gate restauarant association says immigrant labor legal or otherwise is the backbone of food service industry.....she says the high cost of living in the bay area already has already created a labor shortage in restaurants..... she's concerned that if the president's immigration policy translates to increase of raids....that could make finding and keeping staff to prep and cook meals even tougher.if ice were to starting doing raids all of sudden you wouldn't have employees showing up anymore they don't want to be deported.it would be devestating restaurants would shut down they wouldn't be able to operate they wouldn't have enough staff.chef manuel hewitt says his industry would also be hurt because the farmers that produce the food that ends up on his plates also relays on cheap immigrant labor...and if that goes away....prices will go up.....it's absolutely going to trickle down to the consumer he's also concerned about the president's recent proposal to
5:20 pm
pay for a border wall by slapping a 20% tariff on mexican goods.so much of the food that we use in the restaurant industry and at the grocery store is produced and grown in mexico you are going to see massive increases in prices in restaurants you are going to see massive increases in prices at the store.the restaurant association wants to see those working hard to be rewarded with a path to citizenship.we have a lot of people working paying taxes contributing to the growth and vitaliity of our economy, we don't need to deport them we need to making ways to make them full members of our society.they point out that restaurants make up more than 50% of the collected sales tax from san francisco's retail sector...revenue that is critical to the economic health of the city.maureen kelly kron4 news.
