7 quick work of it7 though it was private propertythe demolition was a city project. this pile of debris is getting smaller and smaller.just this morningit was a 20-unit apartment complex at 310 esplanade avenue.but more than a year ago, the city of pacifica deemed it uninhabitable due to coastal erosion."we're stepping in to protect the public safety."the owner of the building went bankrupt in 2015and though it was his responsibility to take care of the dangerous building, he never had the means to.last month, the city said the complex would have to

come down."it was stable enough that we didn't feel like we had to hurry and rush the demolition any more quickly than we already were." so the city is footing the 330-thousand-dollar billso the building doesn't have the chance to plunge into the ocean below.you can see in the video from our helicopter partnership with a-b-c seven news how close the apartments were to the edge.in fact, the excavators had to stay 40 feet away during the entire project. the contractor has also been trying to protect the ocean. "what they did is they had their own drones taking a look at any debris that might have fallen down. just a precaution."now, the city is looking for grants to help shore up the bluffhoping to prevent the future demolition of anything farther inland. former cupertino school board member has appeared in court for the first time. kron4's maureen kelly has new details on the extensive trail of evidence which santa clara sheriff's deputies say helped lead to the arrest.. callous and coldhearted..... those are the words the santa clara county sheriff used to describe the crime christopher ellebracht is accused of.you can see the 38 year old suspect with his public defender by his side in the courtroom.investigators say they got on ellebracht's trail after he was seen on a surviellance camera deposting a forged 10-thousand dollar check....belonging to ginlu "tommy" shwe on january 18th. the morning after the 70 year real estate investor and former cupertino school board member went missing. ellebracht worked as a handyman at one of shwe's properties.that same day he was seen purchasing a shovel at home depot in morgal hill. two days later ellebracht's

van was found abandoned on a remote road in tulare county. shwe's cell phone was found in a puddle nearby.....it was in that same vicinty that the prominent community member and family man was found dead in a shallow grave.....the autopsy showed that he had been stranged.any loss of life is tragic but the strangulation and souless burial in an effort to cover and evade the pursuit of justice is especially troubling.police say a relative of ellebracht's says the suspect told them that he had "buried a problem" in the mountains.and that a search of ellebracht's van turned bloody clothing and a reciept for the shovel.before shwe's body was discovered the handyman had been arrested by visalia pd on an unrelated charge of brandishing a knife at someone...police say ellebracht had shwe's wallet on him at the time.shwe's son says the past few weeks his father has been missing have been hard on his family.....but the details of his death aren't making the loss any easier.it is incomprehensible to us how something like this could happen to someone as kind and as giving as my father.standup ellebrecht's arraignment was put off. he did not enter a plea. he's expected to do that at his next court appearance on februar 23rd.

accused fort lauderdale airport shooter esteban santiago appeared in federal court today. he was arraigned on 22 charges related to the deadly january 6th shooting. the 26-year old plead not guilty. if convicted, he could be sentenced to life in a federal prison-- or death. five people died and six others were wounded when a gunman opened fire in the airport's baggage claim area. santiago served with the armed forces in iraq and has a history of mental illness.

another big story we're tracking tonight... six people are dead and five others remained hospitalized after a shooting inside a quebec city mosque. canadian authorities are investigating the incident as an act of terrorism, and one suspect has been arrested. from our partners at c-n-n karin caifa has the latest. canadian authorities in quebec city spent monday investigating an attack inside the quebec islamic cultural center on sunday night -- and looking into whether more accomplices were involved. supt. martin plante/royal canadian mounted police: "we are still in the early stage of the investigation. we're still trying to determine all of the facts associated with the incident."witnesses said at least two gunman, dressed in black, fired at random inside the mosque sunday night. the attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism. police say two
