our top story this morning... a violent night in berkeley. fiery protests erupted on the campus of u-c berkeley in opposition to a planned speech by a conservative writer and
4:05 am
activist milo yan -nop-po-lus. he was set to speak at the campus last night. kron 4's alecia reid has the details. people that came out to protest say tonight's guest creates a climate of hate.and that puts communities that are already volnurable . at risk. pkgthe protest at u-c berkeley quickly turned violent tonight. two hours before guest speaker milo yiannopoulos was set to speak, a small group ripped down barricades, started a fire and shot fireworks directly at officers.sot - i think its negative and it's dangerous. when you're going against people you call fascist, yet your actions are fascist, it's negative and it's not the way forward. the majority of people that turned up tonight were peaceful. they tell me they were protest a man, who they believe represents racism, transphobia, and misogyny among other forms of hate.sot - it is my responsibility as a student to come out and protestsot - he's hateful. that type of speech shouldn't be protected.the school ended up canceling the event 2 hours before start time because of the chaos on campus. u-c berkeley says amid that violence, destruction of
4:06 am
property, and conceern for public safetty it was necessary to remove milo from the campus and canel his speaking engagement. the school condemns the violence that was on display tonight, and says it overshadows the efforts to engage in lawful protest against the performer. although some students disagree with the way things went down, they believe their point got across.sot - i think it speaks volumes. people have made their opinions known standupthere were dozens of additional police officers on duty, but the police department says it was just impossible to maintain order given the level of threat and violence that we saw here tonight.so it was best to cancel the event.reporting live from u-c berkeley. so now the question is
4:07 am
who is milo yiannopoulous? he's a 32 year old news editor for brietbart news. he was born in greece, raised in england. he founded brietbart with another polarizing person, president trump's senior advisor steve bannon. yiannapolis is a self-described internet troll. and his comments have been criticized as racist, misogynist, anti-muslim and white supremacist. in fact, he was banned from twitter for life last year for what the company called "inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others". once he was taken off campus last night, yiannapolis posted on facebook, saying the left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down. and then u-c berkeley strongly condemeded the violence. the school put out this statement saying... while ya nop po los's views, tactics and rhetoric are profoundly contrary to our own, we are bound by the
4:08 am
constitution, the law, our values and the campus's principles of community to enable free expression.. and president donald trump is speaking out about the protests in berkeley this morning. he tweeted less than an hour ago... saying "if u-c berkeley does not allow free speech, and practices violence, on innocent people ,with a different point of view- no federal funds?". we will continue to monitor the latest in berkeley as they recover from the protests. another big story we are following this morning... an off -duty deputy in the bay area shot and killed a suspect in a home invasion.... kron4's haaziq mad -yun has the story. "somebody broke in the house, somebody got shot""next thing we knew he was laying out on the ground, they we reviving him"the deadly home invasion occurred at around 10:45 am on the 2000 block of buena vista avenue in the quiet east bay town of alameda"surprising to me, very surprising, everybody walks their kids up and down the street, their dogs, we never have this problem" investigators say it appears
4:09 am
an off duty contra costa county deputy armed with a gun confronted a male on near or inside the property. police say those facts are still unclear at this point "it's either a burglary or a home invasion we have to sort all that out"alameda police had residents shelter in place while their swat unit was called in to make sure there were no additional suspects in the area. "we do get our fair share of everything, we have a population of 73-74-thousand people, so you're going to get a little bit of everything but yeah this not normal for our city"the suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. his identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. the contra costa county sheriff's office is not releasing the name of the deputy involved in this shooting at this time. however a witness told us off camera that the deputy is the son of the man who owns the residence where the home invasion occurred. in alameda haaziq madyun kron4news

and supreme court nominee neil gor- sich made his first trip to capitol hill.. president trump's choice to replace is stepping into a highly charged partisan battle. however, president donald trump has told senate republicans they should "go for it" and in-voke, the so- called nuclear option, which would prevent democrats from using a filibuster to block his supreme court nominee. a nuclear option would end, the need for supreme court nominees to receive 60 votes to break a filibuster and would then proceed to an up or down vote on the nominee. then, a nominee would only require a majority vote to be confirmed. coming up.. with another round of storms on the way, one of the area's hardest hit is bracing itself for what's to come. and...
