this morning on the kron 4 morning news... the clean up effort has begun after violent protests causes serious damage in berkeley. what the people who organized the event that led to the protest are saying this morning. and the c-e-o of uber is stepping down as one of president trump's advisors. why he says the whole situation between him and trump is a big misunderstandi ng. but other business leaders are sticking by trumps side. who they are, and the reason why they are staying. the kron 4 morning news starts right now. good morning and welcome to the kron 4 morning news. i'm robin winston. let's get things started with a live look at storm tracker 4 this morning. as you can see we have scattered showers throughout the bay area.

our top story this morning... the violent protests at u-c berkeley may be over, but people are still on edge. and president donald trump also got involved. threating to cut federal funding to the university. kron4's ella sogomonoian has reaction from the students at u-c berkeley who brought the man, at the center of all this, to campus.

besides the protests on campus,,,, downtown berkeley also saw protestors. and a number of businesses were damaged as well. and now owners are left to clean up. kron 4's alecia reid spoke with the downtown berkeley association where they talked about how bad the damage was.

following this morning... one of the most successful c-e- o's in the country is no longer offering his advice to president trump. the man who co-founded san francisco based uber, is responding to public pressure and removing himself from the presidential advisory group. uber c-e-o and co-founder travis kalanick will now not participate in president trump's business advisory council because of the president's executive order on immigration. in a memo to employess, kalanick said initially "joining the group was ánotá meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda. but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that." kalanick was one of 16 business leaders on the council. last weekend after the travel ban was imposed, some people thought uber was trying to break a taxi strike at j-f-k airport which began in response to the president's travel ban. but uber, said it was merely

reducing its prices to help people in need. uber is now pledging millions to help cover the legal expenses and missed work time its drivers may face because of the travel ban. one of the people who is not leaving the board however is tesla and space-x c-e-o elon musk. he says he's staying on the presdient's advisory council so he can voice his objections to the administrations immigration position. also, executives from harley davisdon went to the white house as well to meet with the president to talk about their business. that company is connected to a law-suit concerning h-1-b visas. those visas allow u-s companies to hire workers from other countries to work in the united states. a san francisco county sheriff's deputy is under arrest this morning after an f-b-i raid. april myres was arrested yesterday. she has been a sheriff's deputy since 1996. so far the f-b-i has not released any

good news for california's drought conditions... recent measurements show there's more snow in the sierra then in more than 20-years. the department of water resources was out measuring the snowpack and found that the latest numbers put snow packs at

a man is in jail this morning accused of running over and killing his girlfriend in san leandro. neighbors describe the scene as horrific as the woman lay pinned under the car. kron4's lydia pantazes has the details.

a san leandro man is in jail... accused of running over and killing his girlfriend with his car. neighbors describe the scene as horrific and the woman lay pinned under the suspects vehicle.kron4's lydia pantazes is live at the san leandro police department with the details, lydia?i spoke with neighbors who did not want to go on camera...off camera they told me you could hear the couple fighting in their home...this is where it happened, on the 400 block of ruth court.neighbors say the suspect... 26-year old kevin veladco lived in this duplex with the victim, his girlfriend.one woman told me she saw them fighting outside the home and when velasco tried to leave, she jumped on the car.the witness then told me the next thing she knew the victim was under the car.when emergency responders arrived the woman was trapped under the car and unresponsive... she died at the scene.we spoke with an organization that helps victims of domestic violence who says this could have been avoided.cg: liz varela/building futures with women and children"it could have been avoided if people knew where to get help and if folks know what the warning signs are when things start to escalate and how to deescalate when things start getting into threats of violence and violence."velasco has not been charged but he is in jail and facing charges of homicide, felony domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon. reporting live in san leandro, lydia pantazes kron4 news.

police are asking for the public's help in finding the driver of a car that hit and killed a 29-year-old woman back in december in san bruno. kron4's charles clifford has the details. natsthursday afternoon, the parents of 29-year-old carly flynn talked about how their daughter was the light of their lives. they describe a kind soul who loved animals and painting.sotshe was the kindest person you would ever meetback on december 19th, carly had walked from her home here near cherry avenue and san pablo avenue to get a coffee at starbucks. according to investigators, around 530pm she was crossing

san pablo on her way back home, when she was struck by a mid size white suv making a left hand turn onto san pablo from cherry avenue. the driver of that vehicle then fled the scene. carly was transported to the hospital with critical injuries and died three days later. in the six weeks since her passing, investigators have not yet identified a suspect in this case. they do say that the intersection were carly was struck was busy that evening and they are now hoping that someone with information will come forward.soteven if you think you have information of little or no value. we want to talk to you.following the press conference, carly's parents sat down with kron 4 to deliver a strong message to the person who killed their daughter.sotcome forward. it's not to late to redeem yourself. sotturn your self in. give carly some peace and us closure.d

before you head out the door this morning.... the clean up has begun at u-c berkeley and in the downtown area after violent protests took place in response to a scheduled speech by brite-bart's milo yan- no-po-lus. some protestors broke windows, threw smoke bombs and flares, and started a raging blaze. one person was arrested during the protests. several injuries and acts of vandalism were also reported. and... uber c-e-o and co-founder travis kalanick will now not participate in president trump's business advisory council. in a memo to employess, kalanick said initially "joining the group was ánotá meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda. but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that." kalanick was one of 16 business leaders on the council. also... the warriors keep on rolling. even without star forward draymond green who sat out last night's game against the clippers with a shoulder

and the republican- led house has voted to repeal an obama- era regulation which aimed to prevent people with severe mental illnesses from buying guns. the vote was 235 to 180 in favor of shutting down a social security rule affecting those with severe mental illiness .. supporters of the repeal said "the social security administration not only overstepped its mission with this regulation, but it discriminated against certain americans with disabilities, who receive social security benefits." democrats are responding by saying that repealing the rule would lead to more gun violence. the vote is part of an effort to repeal regulations issued in president obama's final months and represents the first steps toward strengthening gun ownership under president donald trump. take a look at this... this is video of the moment a driver launches off an interstate exit ramp in pennsylvania. and crash

this is video from those protests wednesday night. the demonstrators were protesting a planned speech by conservative writer milo yiannopoulos. and a day after these protests a man wearing a donald trump hat was attacked on campus. kron 4's averi harper is live in berkeley this morning with the details of the attack. averi. . a big story we are following this morning... a u-c berkeley student says he was beaten a day after violent protests erupted at the university. the student says he was wearing a "make america great again" hat on his way to class when two men jumped out of an s-u-v... grabbed his hat and started hitting him. then the attackers jumped back in the car and tried to escape but police blocked their

escape and arrested them. thanks averi. we will check back with you through out the morning. those protests caused more than 100- thousand dollars in damage on the cal campus. and president donald trump also got involved... threatening to cut federal funding to the university. berkeley college republicans gathered yesterday to discuss the protests. the group organized the talk on campus by milo yiannopoulos. they say they expected to see protests... but didn't expect it to get violent.

protesters tried to get campus officials to cancel the talk on campus weeks in advance. but the school said yiannopoulos had the right to give the speech... which was ultimately canceled due to the protests. berkeley college republicans now say they fear there is no guaranteed safety in sharing their conservative views on campus. the protests also spilled out onto the streets of berkeley... and a number of downtown businesses were damaged. the starbucks on oxford and center was forced to close yesterday as crews boarded up the windows and cleaned up the damage. a total of 11 banks, a-t-m's, and retail stores were also damaged by protesters. the city of berkeley has a history of free speech, activism, and protest. officials with the downtown berkeley association say they want to

make sure all of those causes are still honored... while protecting the businesses. city officials say they will work with business owners in the coming weeks to figure out a way to protect their properties in the event of more protests. and this morning experts say that it will be difficult for president trump to follow through on his threat to cut federal funding to the university. this is a story we first told you about yesterday on the kron 4 morning news... after the protests on wednesday night the president took to twitter and threatened to cut federal funding. but the american council on education says that there is nothing under current law that would allow the government to cut federal funding based on allegations of free speech violations.

happening now.... police are trying to find the driver that hit and killed a 29-year-old woman. carly flynn died while crossing the street in san bruno back in december. carly's parents held a press conference with police yesterday asking for witnesses to come forward with any information that might lead to an arrest. carly was hit by a mid-size white

s-u-v making a turn onto san bruno avenue. that car then drove off. after the press conference, carly's parents sat down with kron four to deliver a message to the person who killed their daughter. in the six weeks since her death, police have not yet identified the driver. carly's organs were donated to four different people after she died, including a kidney that went to an 11-year-old boy. two people are under arrest --- accused of stealing a car and leading police on a chase that ended in a crash in oakland. this is video of the scene from our partnership with a-b-c 7 news.. police

first responded to a car-jacking around 4-30 yesterday afternoon on shafter avenue in oakland... about 10 minutes later officers found the car and attempted to make a traffic stop. that's when the driver took off and lead police on a chase that ended with a crash in the area of broadway terrace and the highway 13 on ramp. the driver and a passanger tried to run but officers were able to find the two a short time later. still ahead on the kron four morning news... the warriors continue to dominate the clippers. coming up we will show you the highlights from the warriors latest victory. and we continue to track the rain hitting the bay area this morning. after the break we will take a look at how the rain is impacting your commute this morning. .

this morning with the details of the attack. . a big story we are following this morning... a u-c berkeley student says he was beaten a day after violent protests erupted at the university. the student says he was wearing a "make america great again" hat on his way to class when two men jumped out of an s-u-v... grabbed his hat and started hitting him. then the attackers jumped back in the car and tried to escape but police blocked their escape and arrested them.

protesters tried to get campus officials to cancel the talk on campus weeks in advance. but the school said yiannopoulos had the right to give the speech... which was ultimately canceled due to the protests. berkeley college republicans now say they fear there is no guaranteed safety in sharing their conservative views on campus. the protest also caused major damage to businesses in berkeley. the starbucks on oxford and center was forced to close yesterday as crews boarded up the windows and cleaned up the damage. a total of 11 banks, a-t-m's, and retail stores were also damaged by protesters. the city of berkeley has a history of free speech, activism, and protest. officials with the downtown berkeley association say they want to make sure all of those causes are still honored... while protecting the businesses.

city officials say they will work with business owners in the coming weeks to figure out a way to protect their properties in the event of more protests. and this morning experts say that it will be difficult for president trump to follow through on his threat to cut federal funding to the university. this is a story we first told you about yesterday on the kron 4 morning news... after the protests on wednesday night the president took to twitter and threatened to cut federal funding. but the american council on education says that there is nothing under current law that would allow the government to cut federal funding based on allegations of free speech violations. the university currently receives nearly 600 million dollars in federal money each year. our coverage of this story continues online.on our website.. we have social media reaction to the protest.

breaking news we are following this morning... an attack at the louvre museum in paris. and we are just getting new video from the scene. a man carrying two backpacks and two machetes tried to enter the museum. when soldiers and police tried to tell him he couldn't go in the museum he tried to stab a soldier. the soldier then opened fire... shooting the man five times. the attacker was then arrested. about 1-thousand people were inside the museum at the time of the a san francisco county sheriff's deputy is under arrest this morning after an f-b-i raid. april myres was arrested yesterday. she has been a sheriff's deputy since 1996. so far the f-b-i has not released any other details about the arrest. the sheriff's office did issue a statement saying in part quote: the behavior described in the allegations against ms. myres falls wells below the standard of conduct we and the public expect of our peace officers. we

heading to tahoe this weekend. california gets 30 percent of its water from the snow pack. happening now.... police are trying to find the driver that hit and killed a 29-year-old carly flynn died while crossing the street in san bruno back in december. carly's parents held a press conference with police yesterday asking for witnesses to come forward with any information that might lead to an arrest. carly was hit by a mid-size white s-u-v making a turn onto san bruno avenue. that car then drove off. after the press conference, carly's parents sat down with kron four to deliver a message to the person who killed their daughter.
