sot arne huddin/trapped in slidearne huddin, of capitola, is talking about the huge landslide that came down here on northbound highway 17 tuesday morning, slamming into his truck, he says, like a runaway train.sot arne huddin northbound when the slide hit, huddin's truck was picked up like a toy and tossed over the center divide and into the southbound lanes. huddin was trapped for about ten agonizing minutes, as rocks and debris fell around him. by the time people stopped to help he had crawled out on his own, bloodying his hands in the escape.sot arne huddinthe slide, the same one that crushed a news van last month is now twice as big and as you can see, it's still moving. the chp says it might have been worse.sot troy vincent/chpthe northbound lanes will be closed for a

the peninsula also was hit hard by today's downpour. in east palo alto -- the flooding was so bad... some residents of a condo complex evacuated their homes. kron 4's gabe slate in live on the scene... gabe we understand it was a voluntary evacuation??? this is the woodland creek condominium complex off west bayshore road.the city asked the residence here to evacuate early this afternoon. it was voluntary, not manditory they were worried about them

being so close to the san fran sis qeet toe creek that was nearing it's crest. let's take a look at that creek.. this creek filled so fast today and swept up so much debris, trees, branches, trash it all collected hereso much so they had to immediatley remove the debris so the creek would flow again under the bridge highway 101.this is looking better now but take a look at what it did look like just hours ago branch after branch floated down the san fran qeet toe creek in east palo alto until it they could not go any further. mother nature was making a damn here at west bayshore road and the hwy 101 bridge.. taking advantage of the cities trash rack.. assistant city manager sean charpentier explains what that is. sot - sean look at how close this creek and the

there is a shelter in place at the east palo alto ymca at 550 bell street if residence near here are not comfortable being close to the creek. officials told me the flood warning is expected to be lifted any minute now right now the creek is doing ok it's not flooding over and they don't expect it to but they will keep a close watch it all depends how much rain and how fast it comes down in next 24 hours. back to you

came crashing down -- blocking access to a street in a quiet neighborhood the tree was on the property of a man who's lived there for more than 40-years..and it was an emotional moment for him. kron4's haaziq madyun has the story "it's a shame that i lose that old guy"it is with great sadness that earl heaps gazes upon this massive oak tree on his property here at the corner of alhambra way and tahoe street in martinez. the oak came down during the storm tuesday morning and completely blocked tahoe street...very fortuitus because if the tree fell in the other direction... "it would have taken my house out, that trunk alone is probably 50-tons, it's probably 2 or 300 years old, it was this big when i moved in here back in the 70's"mr. heaps describes the nerve shattering sound of the tree when the tree uprooted"i thought a plane had crashed in the back. then i thought that

marin public works sent out this video of corte madera creek this morning.look how fast and deep that water was going.it has since receded, but it was high enough to cancel classes at kent middle school in larkspur.some kids who had a surprise day off ended up at school, anyway, playing basketball just yards from where the creek had earlier in the day. helena... a large pine tree fell -- bringing down a power line with it... it happened in the area of silverado trail near pope street. crews are working to remove the tree... several roads were also closed through the morning because of flooding... some of them - including big ranch road at oak knoll avenue - reopened by early afternoon. happening now...highway 84 in woodside is a trouble spot. this video shows a rock-slide that closed the westbound lane of the section east of highway 35. as you can see some really big boulders came down on top of the roadway, as well as a lot of mud. the eastbound lane of that same stretch has already been closed for the last few weeks because the ground beneath the road is compromised because of all of this rain. caltrans says one lane could be re-opened tomorrow afternoon....but caltrans can't guarantee it because there are other weather related problems in

"there are multiple spots where trees and rocks have come down, we are trying to get the eastbound lanes open so at least the locals can get in or out but its not a safe stretch of roadway right now" this is a caltrans photo that shows how both lanes were closed at another spot on highway 84, this time it's áwestá of highway 35... after a power pole came down. we're being told that pg&e has responded to this location, and they should have the pole fixed and the power restored by 7:00 tonight..

a state of emergency has been declared for louisiana after a severe stormmoved across the state's southeast corner... parts of eastern new orleans are looking like a disaster area....after at least three tornadoes touched down... destroying homes...flipping cars...and breaking power poles off their foundations. one woman says it's the second time her home has been destroyed.. she lost everything when hurricane katrina hit in 2005. louisiana's governor says he's heartbroken to see people suffering again. there are initial reports of dozens of injuries - including two that are serious. but no word of any fatalities. still ahead... vice president mike pence casting a historic tie-breaking vote... determining whether or not betsy devos will be the next education secretary. the results after the break.

short time ago -- here in san francisco. no ruling was made today..we expect to get a decision sometime this week.the justice department argued that the president's executive order was a national security decision aimed at protecting the country from terrorism.the order, which bans people from 7 predominently muslims countries, was signed by the president late last month. this past friday, a federal judge in seattle signed a temporary restraining order blocking the ban.washington state and minnesota which filed the lawsuit... claim the order is unconstitutional and is intended to discriminate against muslims.if the three- judge panel rules in favor of keeping the order on hold..the case will likely be taken up by the supreme court.

city officials in east palo alto issued a voluntary evacuation , when an apartment complex just feet away from the san fran- cis-quito creek was at risk for flooding. the warning has just been lifted within the last hour... water levels are slowly receeding. but earlier this afternoon... tree branches and other debris from last night's storm ... created a dam at west bayshore road and the highway-101 bridge. all the build- up made the risk for flooding even higher. some who live at the woodland creek condominiums say, they didn't want to take the chance. officials who work with the san francisquito joint powers authority say they have measured today's creek levels...and it will likely rank in the top 25-highest

water also meant no school at tamalpais high school. "there was a ton of water of there, and when i was walking to school , like not even a half a mile away there was all these puddles and i got super wet."that student was waiting for swim practice - it stopped raining this afternoon.but there were still spots right in front of tam high where some lanes were flooded and blocked off.in all, there were 27 public schools and ten private / independent schools that canceled classes in the county today.as of right now, mary jane burke, the county's superintendent of schools, says there will be classes tomorrow.

here in the breaking news center...we just got un update about those major bart delays we told you about earlier. we have learned the person hit by a train has died. this has shutdown bart service between the richmond and el cerrito del norte stations on richmond line. and this could take a while before service resumes. they're currently waiting on the coroner. we'll let you know with a push alert on the kron4 mobile app when service resumes.

it has been a wet and wild day for anyone trying to get around on the peninsula today. kron4's maureen kelly gives us an upclose look at some major traffic distruptions on highway- 84 in woodside. rain loosened rocks....and some big boulders came down onto highway 84 east of skyline blvd this morning.....closing off the westbound lane to traffic....and the trouble is....this was the good side of this section....the east bound side has been closed for weeks....check out the cracks in the ashplat....the ground beneath it is washing out.... this situation made worse when this stand of six redwoods fell last week....see this peg....it was a monitor put into this same section of the road back in 2006 when there was a similar problem......it's not supposed to be sticking out....it means

the road has slipped six inches.standupthe crews out here think they should have this slide cleaned up and westbound 84 back open sometime by wedneday afternoon they are hopingbut the job to reopen eastbound 84 could take six months.but this isn't the only spot where there's trouble on this road.....which below the slide is only open to locals starting from portola road...for good reason.....since there are little slides.....all over causing hazards for motorists. this one apparently took a young tree down with it, the force of teh slide, snapping it some of the newer residents are surprised to be dealing with rural problems so close to the civilization of silicon valley.a few weeks ago we had a power outage that lasted 4 days and then a tree fell and broke our water main so we didn't have water for four days.the road problems are more managable, we are glad to have power and water...i hope it stays that way.but at least 65 people who live around hwy 84 west of skyline blvd did have their power knocked out....for a chunk of the day.....when a power pole came down......another casuality of the storm.maureen kelly kron4 news.
