happening now.... on highway 17....the first full day of work since a life was lost has resulted in considerable progress on the mudlside slide that shut down part of this major thoroughfare between the silicon valley and san jose. a complete fix is days ...if not weeks away... but as

kron four's rob fladeboe reports now live from the scene, the short-term goal is to head off any potential problems associated with the next round of rain. áááááá nats taking out several more trees at the top of the slide was first on caltrans 'to do' list wednesday. next up, the removal of newly excavated

earth and rocks and construction of an 8-foot berm along the entire length of the slide. that way passing traffic on the southbound lanes will be protected should the slide grow worse in the coming wet weather. caltrans spokeswoman susana cruz via phone from san luis obispo.sot voice of: susana cruz/caltrans traffic is moving, one lane each way in the southbound lanes from vine hill to sugar loaf road. but the commute from scotts valley to the summit can take upwards of two hours with alternative routes also plagued by slides. the chp asking drivers to keep their eyes on theroad as they pass by the on going work.sot officer sam courtney/chpyou may recall it was way back on january 9th when the slide

first came down, crushing a news van whose driver esaped serious injury. last week, it happened again as another driver had a narrow escape when the slide got bigger. two days later, one worker was killed and another hurt when they were run over by a dump truck. after a four day shutdown, work resumed tuesday amid new safety rules. only one truck at a time will be loaded and the workwill continue weather permitting. sot susan cruz/caltrans

of late it seems traveling along the highway 680-24 corridor can be dangerous to your car's health. earlier this month sereta churchill told us about how her sunroof was shattered while driving near the 680 24 interchange.sot this past sunday the car alex green was driving in was hit by a softball size piece of cement. in fact the chp has received more than 50 similar complaints over the last few months, but now authorities have determined there is no crime here just bad roadway specifically debris from the roadway hitting the vehicles standup dan kerman /walnut creeksot rocquel johnson/caltranscaltrans has put in an emergency request to

the concord police announced today the arrest of a suspect in the sears jewelry heist - that happened last december. 26-year-old kevin davis jr. was taken into custody earlier this month. officers were able to track down davis through a number of tips after releasing this surveillance video of the robbery. they believe davis stole more than a hundred rings...worth more than 200-thousand dollars police raided the suspect's home... but didn't find any of the stolen property. he faces two felony charges.

massive concrete slab and a crane ... ... 30- stories above the street. this is going on at tehama and howard streets ... that is in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. kron 4's j-r stone is at the scene .... he has an update on the effort to fix this major problem. j-r?

people have been told to evacuate from at least ten buildings so far. and it could be a while before they are allowed to go back in. kron 4's hermela aregawi caught up to a few of the evacuees a short time ago. hermela?

well.. majority of people here work in the area or were passing by and were just trying to figure out what's going on.and i didn't talk to anyone that lived in a building that was evacuated.. but i did talk to several people who work in the howard and 1st street block.they had left their offices in the middle of the day to take care of something..and came back to find they were locked out.. which is a problem... because they left thinking.. they would be back for their stuff. sot will conn, evacuated from officei left i think around 245 to go to the gym. i came back around 330 or so and it was right when people were just getting evacuated. and coming out of the building. and there were firefighters in the lobby and they wouldn't let us back in. .. thankfully i had some friends in the area. and i do have my house keys and my phone on me so i can just borrow some money and get home until we're allowed to go back in.sot charles sipos, evacuated from officewe had no idea. we left all our things. i mean you're not going to haul out a bunch of stuff out to court with you so

she filed this udpate just a short time ago. as work on the nation's tallest dam continues, water officials say they're making great progress, but there's still a long way to go.bill croyle / department of water resources - sot - we still are working through a very difficult situation at the dam. the dam structure is safe, we are working on those areas that are being challenged by the loss of the portion of the spillway. department of water resources acting chief, bill croyle says the spillway has been stable for days. and that the oroville lake behind the dam is draining rapidly. their goal is to drop the reservoir's level by an overall 50 feet within the next 4 days.sot - providing that protective measure, as long as the ground conditions support the truck traffic and the air conditions allow for operations with the helicopters. state water officials are scrambling to reduce the lake's level before the storms get here. forecasts call for up to 4 inches of rain in the sierra foothills

starting tonight or early thrusday morning. although it may be even less sot - these are fairly small storms especially compared to what we saw before andstandup as people brace themselves for the upcoming storms, the butte county sheriff is urging those same residents downstream that were evacuated last weekend, to prepare for another evacuation if necessary.reporting from oroville.. something we will be keeping a close eye on the next 48 hours or so, is the water level. crews are trying to lower the level to about 850- feet.. that's to keep the dam from spilling over during the next round of storms. the state is updating the water level every hour. at 4 a-m... it was at 880- feet. by 10 a-m... it dropped by two feet. four hours later at 2 p-m... it was down to 876- feet. and just about an hour ago...

the water level was at 875 feet .. the state is releasing 100-thousand cubic feet of water ... every second. in the north bay - although the flood waters on highway- 37 are gone - it is still shutdown in both directions effecting many commuters and companies. now, the issue is making some repairs to the road, so that when the rain returns, it won't lead to yet another closure. as kron four's terisa estacio shows us - progress is being made, but the question is - can it all be done in time. pkg - drilling for answers - caltrans crews out examing the soil looking to see how bad the flooding effected the integrity of highway 37. look here at this video from quad copter 4 - due to several factors including creeks overflowing, king tides and a low dip in the roadway, the heavy rains - have lead to several long closures on highway 37. see here how this car got stuck. fortunately no one was injured. now - with severeal dry days - caltrans is focused on putting in a temporary fix - including these measures - here along the eastern side between 101

and atherton - a steel and concrete wall is going up. nats: on wednesday morning - crews removed many signs to begin installing the wall. larger pumps will be going in to drain creeks and marshes that quickly fill up and then flood the roads. also back to those soil samples - if they show the road is now weak - asphalt will be brought in to add an extra layer of protection. tes: 1:00 terisa estacio/reporting cal trans says they are looking at long term plans but those will take some time to accomplish - and there is this problem. the rain - on wednesday severl times, drops came down. 40 thousand drivers a dau=y amount o f people use highway 37 and going around is cumbersome. sot/tc: 1:31 nick chase i hope they fix it fast. in the northbay, te fears of a

storm debris has made its way down the mountains .... and into the san francisco bay. here is a look at the tree limbs and branches that floated into aquatic park cove in san francisco. the national park service says, the debris has been piling up over the last few days. the park service says, this typically happens after a lot of rain. visitors stop by to snap photographs of the mess... yet, despite the debris, swimmers still jumped into the water to get in some

exercise. the national park service is renting a big dumpster so it can remove all of the debris. right now, the cove remains open to the public... but the public is being told - be careful walking along the shore or swimming in the water. from the air... you can see just how big the mess is... it goes beyond san francisco. this video from our helicopter partnership with a-b-c 7 news shows a long line of debris in the bay. this video was taken over by the east bay... and that trail is long. from what we saw, it is mainly tree branches that are floating in the water. but in some instances, entire trees that had made the trek from a local river or creek all the way to the bay. we told you about the debris a couple of weeks causing problems for ferries that shuttle commuters back and forth daily.

synopsis: california water officials say they're making "great progress" on the repairs to the damaged spillways of the nation's tallest dam.department of water resources acting chief bill croyle says oroville lake behind the dam is draining rapidly and has dropped some 20 feet since it reached capacity early sunday and overflowed an emergency spillway. croyle says a storm wednesday appears to be small and that the reservoir's water levels should keep shrinking. residents who were evacuated have now been allowed to return to their homes, but cautioned that they could have to leave again at a moments notice if the situation changes once the next strom moves in. summary: work crews on highway 17 were back at the location where a massive mudslide continues to block the northbound lane between the silicon valley and santa cruz. they will build an 8-foot berm along the entire length of the slide. that way passing traffic on the southbound lanes will be

protected should the slide grow worse in the coming wet weather. traffic is moving, one lane each way in the southbound lanes from vine hill to sugar loaf road. but the commute from scotts valley to the summit can take upwards of two hours with alternative routes also plagued by slides. the chp asking drivers to keep their eyes on the road as they pass by the on going work. in the north bay - although the flood waters on highway 37 are gone - it is still shutdown in both directions effecting many commuters and companies. now the issue making some repairs to the road so that when the rain returns it won't lead to yet another closure. today, caltrans was out taking samples of the soil next to the roadway to see how flood waters have affected the integrity of the pavement. if it is bad, they can lay a layer of asphalt. in addition, a steel concrete wall is being installed to keep water at bay. no word yet on when the reapirs will be done or when the road will be reopened.
