on the other side of 280.. the area around south 17th street is also flooded. major flooding creating quite a mess in the neighborhood. kron 4's haaziq madyun has been there all day.. and joins us live now with update on the situation. haaziq... i arrived here this morning and coyote creek has been rising ever since. folks who live here along south 1th street tell me the last time the creek caused flooding was back in 97...but they say it was nothing like what they have seen here today coyote creek rising fast tuesday behind homes here on south 17th street in san jose "this is very unusual, this is crazy""i have been here since 1970 and i have never seen it this high"residents with low laying backyards are trying to prevent the water from flooding their homes. in some cases, it is a lost cause. the creek level has increased 10-feet. here you see the water is rising up to the roof line of this home. however a few doors down the water has yet to reach the foundation of mike small's property"yeah we are busy, just trying to keep the creek from coming up over our wall and into our basement, lots of sandbagging going on"lots of sandbagging

going on next door at his neighbor's home as well, as you can see the water is covering a huge section of the yard and has flooded the lower level of the home "water is coming through the basement door at the entrance, i put sandbags in front of the door but it's still coming in, so we're going to put sandbags inside the house at the door, from the window here you can see it's about 4 inches on the floor so everything is probably gone"s city officials say too much water coming over the spillway at the anderson reservoir is to blame for the flooding in san jose. this is video taken today...from our partnership with abc 7 news....showing the intense water flow coming from the anderson reservoir... which is in morgan hill. the santa clara valley water district says the reservoir is at 103 percent of

capacity. the water is normally kept at 68% of capacity.....for seismic safety reasons... san jose mayor liccardo says there is a breach along the bank of coyote creek which is contributing to the flooding. city officials say the water from the anderson reservoir will continue pour down the spillway - meaning coyote creek will continue to rise....and the flooding could get worse. with the mandatory and voluntary evacuations in effect... several evacuation centers sprouted up around the city to hold those displaced by the storm. evacuees can head to james lick high school on white road. the roosevelt community center on santa clara street. the shirakawa community center on lucretia avenue. evergreen valley high school is also a standby location. kron four's spencer blake is standing by live at james lick high school - where evacuees have been arriving in large groups. spencer - what can you

tell us? those large groups are coming by the bus load.a few of those shelters you mentioned are short term shelters set up by the city, but james lick high is an áovernight shelter that the red cross is in charge of. cots are set up inside the gym there. city buses have been bringing evacuees from the other evacuation centers to this one. people had the clothes on their backs and what little they could carry.i was up in chico at the evacuation center during the oroville dam scare, and the difference with these evacuees is that many of them have already seen their homes and cars destroyed by the flood waters.a lot of them already know the headache and heartache they have to sort through when things dry up. there's space for just over 200 people to spend the night here.the red cross has another high school on standby in case they need more bed space.

"we'd rather have the shelter open, in case people need it rather than having to scramble to open it. so we want to make sure that, if we can, the shelter's open, people have a warm, safe place to come to." for interested volunteers, the best thing the red cross says you can do in the long run, is make donations to the red cross.a lot of these people have little clothing with them, or áwet clothing with them, so the salvation army has been bringing in rack-fulls of clothes throughout the afternoon. of course, they'll be helping to serve three warm meals a day here, as well.we don't know yet how long people will need to stay here.live in san jose, spencer blake, kron four news.

the san jose fire department rescued five people this morning from a flooded san jose creek. rescue crews say 5 people in a homeless encampment near los lagos golf course were trapped after coyote creek flooded early this morning. some took to the trees to escape the dangerous waters. kron4's will tran spoke to one of the victims moments after he was rescued. this is what northbound 101 at cochrane in morgan hill looks like when there are no cars. the northbound side of the freeway was shutdown about 11 am tuesday due to flooding it turns out storms caused a levee to break on the coyote canal east of the freeway, sending water pouring into the northbound lanes. sot aaron baker/santa clara valley water districtthe coyote creek is so high that it's overtopping the banks into the coyote canal so what we are trying to do is prevent this flow from going any further to stop the flow, the santa clara valley water district is constructing a wall of mud upstream, which will serve as dam and stop coyote canal from traveling northbound toward the location

highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains has finally reopened this morning after dealing with mudslides. the scotts valley area between vine hill and sugarloaf has been closed since february 7th. that's when the first major slide trapped a driver in his truck. in the same area, a crew member was killed while trying to secure the slide just a few days later. after about two weeks of around the clock work, all lanes are open. in vacaville... a peaceful sunday afternoon for one family ends with a giant redwood tree falling on top of their house. kron four's philippe djegal reports from peach tree avenue... where the family says the end to this story could have been a

have been sent to shelters tonight. and this is not the only area dealing with flooding. we will have live reports tonight on kron 4 news at six. vicki back to you. 6 teenagers were rescued from an icy pond in central park in new york last night... catherine heenan is here with details on what happened....and who came to help... someone recorded part of the incident....and can be heard off-camera calling the teenagers "stupid." fortunately for them -- lots of people also came to help... the teenagers had been playing and taking photos on the ice... it's an off-limits pond which had a "keep off" warning sign nearby.. when the ice broke...3 or 4 good samaritans jumped in to help... and police and firefighters arrived on the scene a few minutes later.. the 15 and 16-year-olds will be ok....but it was a

frightening scene.. moments before the ice broke - a couple of tourists took a selfie near the pond - withthe teenagers visible in the background. seven people were eventually taken to the hospital in serious condition and treatedfor hypothermia... the 7th person was apparently one of the rescuers.. everyone is expected to be ok... the national park service says graffiti has been found at the lincoln memorial, the washington monument and the world war ii memorial. messages written in permanent marker were discovered over the weekend. officials say the message written on the washington monument references president john f. kennedy's

assassination and the sept. 11, 2001 attacks. workers estimate cleaning will take about two weeks. investigators are working to pull survaillence video of the area. we are still monitoring the damaged oroville spillway...which threatened to flood the homes of nearly 200- thousand people early last week. heavy rain falling in the area is causing lake levels to rise behind the dam... but officials say the risk of flooding has greatly reduced. crews are still releasing some water as they repair the eroded emergency spillway. the director of the department of water resources was optomistic today... saying the lake still has plenty of room to take in the recent rainfall... and repairs aer getting closer to completion. volunteers are here trying to help out.i ran into the girls' soccer coach here at lick high school.who had to evacuate with his brother back in the flood of 1983 and go stay at independence high school. "i know the feeling of having to be at a school and having to be away from the family." take a look at some of the video an evacuee showed me on her phone.they saw water halfway up cars in their neighborhood, and by the time they left, not even an hour laterall they could see was the roofs of cars.from the looks on people's faces, a lot of them have the realization that their belongings are already destroyed..and that they'll have a lot to deal with when they go back home, whenever that is. if they still can't go home by the time school starts again on monday, the red cross will be working to find another

problems making the drive treacherous. in some spots... there's just no road at all tonight. grant lodes is here with some dramatic pictures from highway 50. the trouble is in bridal veil falls near pollock pines. pretty simply put... part of highway has collapsed. the california highway patrol shot this video... we are told these are the westbound lanes we are looking at. the officer can be heard saying that right before he started shooting it, part of the cliff crumbled and went down into the creek below. the shoulder... it is gone. one of the lanes, also buckling and gone. the guard rail is just dangling
