the properties near south 17th and east san fernando streets were hit pretty hard.... that is where we find kron4's haaziq madyun... who is standing by live with more on this situation. coyote creek flood water is receding which is good news for folks who live one the border of the mandatory evacuation zone. i went back there today to take a look at how the flood damaged one of the homes on south 17th street this is a photo of what preston powell's backyard looked like before the coyote creek flood. this is video of

what it looks like now"the water flooded and in about 3-hours we went from okay to in-danger"that was this naglee park homeowner's cue to take steps to save as much of his san jose property as possible. he brought in several pumps to drain the water from the lower level of the home. this is what his daughter's bedroom looked like wednesday. here is what it looks like today"my total basement is lost, my new landscape that was just finalized in july is all gone" he and his family purchased the home 17-years ago. it sits on a full acre at the corner of south 17th street and east san fernando street"the debris and the extra logs that floated up here, when the water recedes those are going to be difficult to move"but when the time comes to clear it out his neighbors say they will be here to lend a hand "absolutely this neighborhood is about people helping each other"and that means a lot to this u.s. army veteran"the single most amazing thing about this whole tragedy, our neighbors came together and

helped out each other...that got me" in fact folks here are already talking about organizing clean-up parties for their neighbors hardest hit by the flood...in san jose haaziq madyun kron4news and the american red cross is helping those who've been forced to leave their neighborhoods. many of those who evacuated because of the flooding in san jose came here to james lick high school the other location is at evergreen valley high school in san jose. it was a busy scene today - as many people were evacuated from there homes late last night. more than 300 people had to be rescued by boat... the red cross is providing food, shelter and a cot to sleep on to evacuees. "we're we lucky that this was a week of february break that we could have this school but we are available to set up a third shelter if needed and we are going to take care of our clients as long as we have to." san jose mayor sam

liccardo spent time with evacuees at the centers last night. right now, it's not clear when people will be able to return home. and we have posted a list of evacuation centers on our website ... there - you can also find a link on how to help those - who lost almost everything in the floods. it's all on kron 4 dot com. us.highway 101 in san jose has fully reopened this evening. after being closed overnight due to flooding. the highway was closed in both directions between interstates 880 and 280. all lanes re-opened... late this morning. while evacuations are up to each city... it's the santa clara valley water district that's responsible for monitoring coyote creek. this is video taken today - showing line a line of cars flooded at william street park. and tonight - we are learning what the water

district is doing to best prepare for the next round of storms. kron 4's dan kerman is live for us tonight in san jose with more on the work the water district is doing. dan? crews with the santa clara valley water district snaked their way along coyote creek wednesday identifying hazards in preparation for the next round of storms.sot don duran/santa clara valley water district 10-20we want to protect our levee system and what this debris is doing is catching up on these trees and diverting the flow into the levee and it can cause severe erosion and loss of our levee

if we don't remove the debris crews hauled up numerous logs both upstream and downstream of the downtown area and they say the creek is still filled with a lot more water than it usually issotthe water levels have receeded 2-3 feet but its still significantly high at this pointother crews were out identifying high water marks near bridges and homes that flooded in hopes the information will allow them to better predict what happens in future storms. crews are also looking at stream gages and measuring water flows. still there are no guaranteessot gina adriano/santa clara valley water district 102-111 weather is unpredictable and can change last minute, we've had storms deliver a lots less and a lot more water than expected, so we do what we can with the data we have but at the end of the day it's a battle against nature117 against nature

this was the scene at the rock springs neighborhood today in san jose. you can see how high the flood waters have gotten. kron four's philippe djegal visited the area and spoke with people who returned to their homes to grab some items to hold them over for a few days.

in alameda county -some highly traveled roads that were closed due to recent storms have re-opened. but others remain shut down... as crews work to clear debris. the popular altamont pass road... just north of interstate 580 is open this evening. dozens of potholes had forced that to close.. but palomares

road is still shutdown to traffic between palo verde road in castro valley and niles canyon road in fremont. crews are currently clearing all the soil and debris from a giant mudslide. and some parks in alameda county have also been compromised. del valle reigional park in livermore is closed until monday because of heavy flooding. and sunol regional wilderness - is closed indefinitely due to a rockslide that has blocked the road leading to the park. take a look at these photos of pfeiffer canyon bridge on the big sur coast. you can see gigantic cracks in one of it's two columns. the bridge has been closed to traffic all week. caltrans officials say the bridge is now beyond repair. and will either fall on it's own or have to demolished. crews say the bridge has sunk and shifted at least seven inches... since valentines day. there's currently no time frame for when a new bridge will be built. the stormy weather

and piles of new snow in the sierra continue to cause major problems...ranging from closed roads to accidents.. catherine heenan is here with an update on conditions.. even if you're not running into road closures.....driving in the sierra hasbeen a problem... just one example...by early afternoon, the nevada highway patrol says there were more thantwo dozen crashes on i-80 -- and on highways in and around reno. most of the accidents involve single- vehicle spin-outs and fender benders... several crashes were also reported on 580 in the reno area...and on u.s. 50 near dayton. the truckee c-h-p has been posting photos showing stalled and snow-bound trucks. and highway workers say that bad driving isn't helping the situation...

then there's the giant sinkhole near bridal veil falls that's caused a chunk of highway 50 to collapse.. the mud and erosion here are extensive....and crews are trying to figure out thebest way to get this fixed. they're shoring up the westbound lanes of highway 50 now -- and will work on a more permanent fix later.. grant and vicki? a few lingering showers will be possible through early thursday morning, mainly offshore and near the coast. in addition, there is a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms across the

"the water is receding but we are far from out of this and we are going to insist on the evacuation period through today until we have a better handle on what's happening with these water flows. san jose mayor sam liccardo speaking today - as evacuation orders for thousands of people remain in effect - due to major flooding in the area. mayor liccardo is urging people not to return to their homes due to water contamination. here's where things stand right now: approximately 14-thousand people are under a mandatory evacuation oder... and an additional 22-thousand are under an evacuation advisory. there are three main areas that have been evacuated: mobile home parks near old oakland road - that includes south bay mobile home park, golden wheel, and river bend mobile home park.... neighborhoods

murder case. . . today federal prosecutors revealed additional court documents. . . g-p-s evidence shows that 22- year-old dylann roof visited two churches. it shows he drove toward a second black church. . .after shooting nine people at emanuel ame church in charleston.prosecutors say the gps shut off shortly after. . .indicating he stopped the car contemplating another attack.they say that parish also had a sign advertising a wednesday night bible study.roof was sentenced to death last month. many fans of actor harrison ford... want the stars wars legend's pilot's license revoked. this newly released video shows the actor's close call at john wayne airport in orange county last week. authorities say the 74-year old flew his small plane over a taxiing american airlines plane and landed on a taxiway... instead of the runway he was supposed to land on!! the american airlines

the coyote creek flood will be going home tonight... the city made that annoucnement a short time ago. but many will be going home to a muddy mess. tonight we will have the latest on the cleanup effort as the evacuees return home. we will have that story and much more on kron 4 news at six. grant back to you. now is the time of year where it gets a little more serious for the golden state warriors. the all-star break is over with.... so the dubs are locked in on getting through the final 26-games of the regular season and gearing up for the playoffs. mark carpenter was at warriors hq for today's practice... and joins us with more.

it's all about pacing and easing back into the grind. today was the warriors first practice since all-star weekend... and steve kerr gave an extra day off to his four all-stars that went to new orleans. that rest will come in handy... as golden state opens a stretch of 5-games in 7-days, which includes a trip to the east coast. kerr says he's never seen a schedule like this. "five-game trip back east. come home for one. fly to minnesota and then have a back- to-back in san antonio. it's like, 'here you go golden state here's your marquee game against the spurs on a saturday night on abc and it'll be your 8th game in 12 days with 10,000 miles. it's insane." the warriors will have no problem racking up frequent-flyer miles over the next two weeks... kerr says a top priority is remaining healthy for the playoffs. that should be a little easier this year, considering the team isn't targeting another regular- season wins record. good evening... i'm pam moore. and i am steve aveson. a mandatory evacuation order remains in effect tonight. the city of san jose posted this map just a couple of hours ago. the area you see shaded in green... people are allowed to return. if it is orange... then it remains under an evacuation order. this is despite the water receding along coyote creek.

been reopened... after flooding from the coyote creek... catherine heenan is here with a view of some of the problem areas... we've got an aerial view of the stretch of 101 that was such a problem because of overnight flooding...this is from our partnership with abc-7.... there's lots of soggy, now swampy land throughout the area...but this stretch was closed for hours.... yet another casualty of the coyote creek overflow.. 101 in san jose was closed in both directions between 880 and 280... northbound and southbound lanes near mckee road were reopened late this morning... typically when flooding happens on that stretch of 101....water is pumped into the creek butwith coyote creek flowing above flood stage, the c-h-p says that's not an option. it affected a lot of morning commutes and plans...also...a northbound stretch of 101 near morgan hill that flooded and

closed for severalhours has also re-opened. and lots of surface streets along 101 still have standing water.. pam and steve? there has been a lot of discussion about who should have sounded the alarm about the flooding from coyote creek. the water district is in charge of anderson reservoir... we know that. the citys are responsible for evacuating people, but its up to the santa clara valley water district to monitor coyote creek and take steps to prepare for the next storm. kron 4's dan kerman is live in san jose tonight .. with that part of the story.

natsthis is the issue here where we have debris collect on the treeswednesday, crews with the santa clara valley water district were working their way up and down coyote creek clearing debris in anticipation of the next round of storms.sot don duran/santa clara valley water district 15-25if the deris is collecting in the middle at this level of flow that's not as much of a concern because it will blow right past, but if the debris is collecting toward the levee, then it will push it into the levee and damage the leveethat's why tree branches like these were removed both upstream and downstream of the downtown area it's all part of the water district multi facet approach to monitor the creek and prepare for the next storm sot gina adriano/santa clara valley water district 45-55we do have stream gauges that allow us to monitor the creek and we have crews that measure

on the peninsula... police need help finding at least two burglary suspects. a surveillance video system caught them trying to get into a home in palo alto... and one of the suspects... police might have an easy time finding him. grant lodes is here with the video. when you talk about evidence... this is some of the best investigators could ask for. we have the dramatic video of this break-in attempt from february ninth. and palo alto police say while the guys you are about to see failed... based on reports... they think they were able to burglarize another home earlier that day. so here it is... this is on roosevelt circle. you will see a man walk up... he is the first suspect. he comes around... attempts to open a

families have evacuated their homes in san jose since coyote creek flooded parts of the city. some 14,000 households are in the three mandatory evacuation areas, including almost 500 families from apartments in the rock springs neighborhood, the east william street corridor including brookwood terrace and parts of naglee park and three mobile home parks along oakland road. no decision on when the evacuation order will be lifted. here in san jose residents who live on the edge the mandatory evacuation zone... did not escape flood damage from coyote creek..."the water

summary: crews with the santa clara valley water district snaked their way along coyote creek wednesday identifying hazards along 30 miles of creek in preparation for the next round of storms.crews hauled up numerous logs both upstream and downstream of the downtown area and they say the creek has receeded 2 to 3 feet in the past day but is still filled with a lot more water than it usually isother crews were out identifying high water marks near bridges and homes that flooded in hopes the information will allow them to better predict what happens in future storms. the people who live in a san jose mobile home park were also forced out by the flood. now many are anxiously waiting for word on when it will be safe to return to their homes. kron 4's jeff pierce talked to some of the resident's today. the southbay mobile home park in san jose is a ghost town today. residents were told they had to evacuate last
