no major hot spots. bay bridge wb 80 is smooth into san francisco. no problems on the san mateo bridge. no problems on 580, 880, 24. flames rip through an apartment complex. leaving familys homeless. 14 people have to find a place to stay now as investigators try to determine the cause of the blaze. kron 4's jr stone spoke someone who had to get out as that fire spread. flames shooting out of a window and into the air in south san francisco after an apartment building caught fire. those inside, including 4 year old jewel salazar were forced to escape. young jewel described the moments before she saw the flames.sot my mom and my grandma was watching

television in the livinglivingliving room? uh huhsot was in the living room watching tv and then my mother in law said she smelled a burn and my girlfriend went to check it out in a room and all of a sudden the room was on fire.neighbors watched as black smoke poured out of the top of the building. witnesses say they won't forget what it looked like.sot there was just a pile of smoke coming out of the apartment next door and the smoke just kept on growing and growing and it went literally up to the next floor on top.three apartments were destroyed but everyone was able to get out safe. including jewel who, along with her family ran out of their home without shoes on. tonight a friend has lent her shoes.sot i think i'm feeling a little bit sad because i accidentally burned my housebut i'm sure you'll be okay right? yeahfamily members of jewel assure me they are comforting her. working with the youngster so that she knows this was no ones fault.sot she was crying but that's because she has never seen thisshe's okay.

the victim's relief fund comes as thousands of families continue to clean up their homes that were damaged in the floods. kron 4's alecia reid has the story. flood damage is extreme on this stretch of road.evidence is still visible, both in and outside the homes.folks here are grateful hearing that a billionaire donated 5-million dollars.pkgnatsot - it's one of the worst disasters in over a hundred yearsit's been days since environmental plus has been working on this home. louie valle / environmental plus - sot - it's a lot of work, a lot of damage, a lot of people lost their homes and their valuablesthe entire basement flooded and seeped into the home. at least a foot of the wall had to be removed. for safety, cleanup crews come fully geared, biowash and sanitize the property, then suction and dry it all out. sot - every house varies, but this house had a lot of mud on the bottom so it could take a week or 2 weeks depending on the structurethat's only the first step of the cleanup. with restoration and remodeling, it could take 3-6 months before the family can move back in. sot - it's just sad to see people going through this strugglerepairs here can cost anywhere from 15

following this morning.. we now know the three people who died in a plane crash in southern california are from the bay area. the plane was headed to san jose from riverside when it crashed into two homes monday. the people on board had flown to disneyland to watch a cheerleading competition. family members tell us 83-year-old nouri hijazi, was the pilot. he was killed along with his wife dana hijazi and 22 year-old adine fareles. all are from the san jose area. two other people are in the hospitalized this morning. stacey pierce, who's the daughter of nouri and dana and silvia farelas. former coworkers of one of the victims involved in the plane crash in riverside are still shocked by what happened. adine farelas worked at peppertree school in los gatos for years, up until this fall. her co-workers say, she was a big part of their community. adding parents and children loved trt:13/ just a wonderful soul

and beautiful person. everyone loves her here at peppertree and everyone is going to miss her terribly. again, farelas mother who was also on the flight survived the crash. she's in the hospital in critical condition. another big story we are following this morning.. another cabinet pick by president trump under scrutiny for communications with russia. officials say attorney general jeff sessions had two conversations with the russian ambassador to the united states during the presidential campaign. the justice department says the two conversations took place last year when sessions was a senator. one was an office visit that occurred when he was a member of the senate armed services committee. the other occurred in a group setting with other ambassadors following a heritage foundation speech. these revelations come during the f-b-i's investigation into russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. attorney general sessions

months after a rolling gun battle through the streets of san leandro police say they now have both of the suspected gunmen in custody. police have arrested marcus jones in an apartment in san leandro tuesday. the other suspect, 33 year old davlon harris was arrested just after the shootout in november. police say jones old was carrying illegal guns and drugs when he was arrested. which they say suggests, he may also be involved in more crimes. an elderly couple was seriously hurt in the

shooting. jones is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder. two men have been arrested and charged with the killing of a little league coach to death. frank navarro was killed near the san jose club where he worked as a bouncer. the two suspects made their first court in san jose. kron 4's dan kerman has the details. 24 year old aaron vallejo and 32 year old robert ruiz said nothing during their first court appearance wednesday. the two are charged with murder in connection with this weekends fatal stabbing of frank navarro.sot yolanda beltran/victim's aunt 13-18i wanted to see the people who took our frankie away from us navarro's aunt and uncle, and a family friend were in court for the hearing.sot phillip beltran/victim's uncle 22-31he didn't deserve to go out this way. very respectful, to know him was to love himnavarro, a beloved little league coach was working security at the tres gringos cabo cantina in downtown san jose. sometime before midnight there was a

of the east bay... the wife of the orlando nightclub shooter has been granted bail. a federal judge in oakland ruled that noor salman is not a flight risk or a danger to public safety. she is currently at the santa rita jail. the judge granted a two-day stay so prosecutors can appeal the ruling to the florida court which has jurisdiction in the case. the 31-year-old is accused of aiding her husband omar mateen in providing support to the islamic state when mateen killed 49- people in an attack at a gay nightclub last june. a woman who says she is like an aunt to salman says, salman's son has been taking it especially hard. trt:10/ "where's my mommy" upon granting bail the judge said, there is no evidence salman has any connection to the islamic state. she is set to be released by the end of the week and she will have to wear an electronic ankle monitor. a trial date has not been set.

.. in the east bay... oakland police chief anne kirkpatrick took the time to talk to about her broad goals for the department and the people it serves. the new chief says, she wants to change the hearts and minds of police officers. and help care for the city's most vulnerable residents. however, chief kirk-patrick won't say how she plans on accomplishig that. saying it is too soon to jump into specific policies. kirkpatrick says, she is living in downtown oakland.. she has 35- years of experience in law enforcement and this is the fourth time she has held the position of chief. her department's single mission she says is to make oakland safe. "i want to be part of a team that wants to be the best. i have always been attracted to that. and, i believe that oakland and this police department has everything in its make-up to be the best police department in this country." chief kirkpatrick did

newborns are being delivered in record numbers with syphilis. the c-d-c says std's in general are way up. thesyphilis was almost non-existent in the year 2000. and now, rates rose 27 percent across the country from 20-14 to 20-15. the c-d-c says many women do not know they have the s-t-d. or are unaware their unborn baby could be infected. and doctors say the problem is exploding with baby after baby being born severely anemic, lungs filled with fluid and bodies covered with rashes. officials say the problem is rampant in low income areas. in fresno there were 40 newborns born with syphilis in 2015, up from just two babies four years earlier. some advocaates and people in the health profession are fearful that repealing obama care could result in this trend continuing. still ahead... two people have been arrested after police say they base jumped off a building. who police are still looking for.

the hunt is on for a female daredevil who base jumped off the hilton hotel in san francisco. police arrested two men who they say jumped with her. since then, both suspects have been released. kron 4's charles clifford explains how the jump the san francisco police department says that 25-year-old brendan weinstein and 26-year-old joshua glovac . . both from san francisco. . .base jumped off the top of the 46-story hilton tower near union square around 1130 tuesday evening.after jumping, the pair apparently parachuted several blocks to the west and landed on jones street. sfpd officers sitting in a police cruiser watched the whole thing.sotthe officers just

no major hot spots. bay bridge wb 80 is smooth into san francisco. breaking news we are following form overnight another shooting on an east bay freeway... this time on interstate 880 in oakland. this is the third shooting on an east bay freeway since saturday. kron 4's averi harper is live in oakland with the details. averi. the shooting happened on south bound interstate 880 in oakland. it happened around 10:00 last night. the shooter led police on a chase and got away. police later found the car which was a rental for los angeles. police set up a perimeter around 55th and brookdale

while they search for the suspects. thanks aver. we will check back with you through out the morning. as we mentioned this is the third shooting on an east bay freeway since saturday. the first happened saturday night... 28-year-old braun harold was shot and killed on highway 4 near the hillcrest avenue off-ramp in antioch. police are still looking for the shooter in that case. then the second shooting happened monday night on interstate 580 in pleasanton. nobody was injured in that shooting. police are still looking for that shooter this morning. witnesses say it may have been sparked by a road rage incident. over a dozen people are

march 21st. a go-fund-me page has been set up to pay for navarro's funeral. we have a link to that page on our website at kron-four-dot- breaking news from overnight... the trump administration is responding to reports of another possible contact between president trump's campaign and the russians. james fletcher is at the breaking news desk with the overnight developments. james. the new information reportedly involves two meetings between attorney general jeff sessions... and a russian diplomat who some consider to be moscow's top spy in washington. sessions did not mention the meetings during his confirmation hearings when he said he did not know of any contacts between trump surrogates and russians. sessions was serving as both a senator and a member of president trumps campaign at the time. a spokeswoman for the attorney general says sessions met with the russian diplomat in his capacity as an armed services committee member, rather than a trump surrogate. some democratic lawmakers are calling for sessions to recuse himself from any russia investigation...while others

republican lead congress is working on making the president's plan a reality. the president and house speaker paul ryan say their first priority is repealing and replacing the affordable care act. other items on the agenda include a trillion dollar infrastructure plan and an increase in military spending. months after a gun battle through the streets of san leandro... police say they now have both of the suspected shooters in custody. police arrested marcus jones in an apartment in san leandro. the other suspect, 33 year old davlon harris was arrested just after the shootout in november. police say jones was carrying illegal guns and drugs when he was arrested. police are now trying to figure out if he is connected to other crimes. an elderly couple was seriously injured in the shooting. jones is facing multiple charges, including attempted some relief for san jose flood victims this morning. a southern california billionaire has given a five- million dollar donation as thousands of families continue to clean up their damaged homes. as the victims

chief anne kirkpatrick says oakland is "a city on the move." that is how she described the city during a round table discussion with reporters. the new chief says, she wants to change the hearts and minds of police officers. and help care for the city's most vulnerable residents. however, chief kirk-patrick won't say how she plans on accomplishing that... saying it is too soon to jump into specific policies. she says the department's only mission right now is to make oakland safe. "i want to be part of a team that wants to be the best. i have always been attracted to that. and, i believe that oakland and this police department has everything in its make-up to be the best police department in this country." chief kirkpatrick also

talked about recent protests in the city. she says she knows that oakland is a city which hosts has a lot of them and that protests are a part of our american democracy. but she also says that those protests should never result in damage or injury. the search continues this morning for a third person who base jumped off the hilton hotel in san francisco. on tuesday night...three people jumped off the nearly 500 feet tower near union square. two of the daredevils...25- year-old brendan weinstein and 26-year-old joshua glovac...were arrested and released. construction is officially underway on the new van ness corridor project. the groundbreaking for the project was held yesterday. many of the changes coming to the road will include safety

enhancements such as extended sidewalks and high visibility crosswalks. also, the middle of van ness will be set aside for buses, and city officials hope that change will make traveling the corridor faster and safer for everyone. the project is expected to be completed in 2019. police in los angeles have arrested a suspected carjacker who led them on a car chase through the city. we brought you this chase live yesterday morning on the kron 4 morning news. the chase lasted for more than two hours. police tried to stop the car with spike strips and when it eventually pulled over the driver did not get out which led to a stand off with police. a swat team then surrounded the vehicle, before the suspect was taken into custody. a former bay area police chief is defending his officers actions after some disturbing new video is released. it shows police in arizona .... pushing an 86- year-old woman to the ground during a protest... and then pepper- spraying a 65-year- old woman who was trying to

major earthquake. earthquake prediction, as we know, is an imperfect science. but researchers have identified california as one of two states that have the highest risk of seeing a major earthquake this year. in fact, the report says a large area of the south bay... especially around gilroy and and beyond into the central valley... has the highest risk of experiencing an earthquake large enough to cause severe damage. this is video of some of the damage caused by the south napa earthquake a couple of years ago. that quake had a magnitude of 6.0. by the way, the other state with the highest risk of a major earthquake this year is oklahoma. but, unlike california, scientists say most of that state's earthquakes are caused by oil and gas drilling.

there are widespread fears of immigration raids among undocumented immigrants across the bay area... and now a local group is taking action. "siren" is an immigration non-profit based in san jose. they have established a rapid response network after recent immigration sweeps. the group will send text messages which will alert the community if sweeps are happening. it will also bring together immigration attorneys and community activists. "like activists that are willing to come down and do a shield of protection if there's an ice sweep in their neighborhood or work site." siren is also building a network of temporary shelters or safe houses for undocumented immigrants around the bay area. the wife of the orlando nightclub shooter has been granted bail. a federal judge in oakland ruled that noor salman is not a flight risk or a danger to public safety. she is currently at the santa rita jail. the judge granted a two-day

a 15-year-old boy from ethiopia is getting a life- changing surgery here in the bay area. he's been struggling with scoliosis but hasn't been able to get the medical help he needs. now thanks to a local organization. . . the boy will finally undergo the necessary operation. yesterday he met with the doctor who will perform the orthopedic surgery at good samaritan hospital in san jose. the doctor will be doing the work for free. the surgery is not available in ethiopia. it is scheduled for sunday. he will have a few weeks to recover before he returns home to ethiopia. water flow at lake oroville's spillway has come to a halt... as workers are now assessing the damage and coming up with a solution to fix the damaged spillway. with a break in the rain,

of the russian government about the 2016 election, sessions replied "no." his representatives this morning say there is misleading about his answer because sessions never talked about the campaign with the russian ambassador. but given these new revelations... some democratic lawmakers are calling for sessions to recuse himself from any russia investigation... while others -- like congressman elijah cummings -- are going even further and resign. voice of rep. elijah cummings / -d- maryland: "a lie is a lie is a lie, period. the search continues this morning for a third person who base jumped off the hilton hotel in san francisco. on tuesday night...three people jumped off the nearly 500 feet tall tower near union square. two of the daredevils...25- year-old brendan weinstein and 26-year-old joshua glovac...were arrested and released. construction is officially underway on the new van ness corridor project. the groundbreaking for the project was held yesterday. many of the changes coming to the road will include safety enhancements such as extended sidewalks and high visibility crosswalks. also, the middle of van ness will be set aside for buses, and city officials hope that change will make traveling the corridor faster and safer for everyone. the project is expected to be completed in 2019. former president george w bush spoke at the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley. the former president talked about the trump administration and the role of the media. he said

out in national news... cleanup is underway after tornadoes and severe thunderstorms devasted several midwestern states earlier this week. the storms caused three deaths. james fletcher has takes a look at the damage. those tornadoes hit on tuesday... one man was killed in missouri and two people died in illinois. these are aerial shots of the damage in central illinois. you can see some homes are completely destroyed. this is the scene in perryville, missouri. one tornado touched down there, blowing cars and tractor trailers off the interstate. several drivers and passengers were injured. the powerful storm rocked a marina in the nashville area yesterday morning. some people were on their house boats when the storms started -- but there are not reports of injuries. the national weather service is

investigating reports of possible tornadoes throughout middle tennessee. there was also damage in southern kentucky. there are widespread fears of immigration raids among undocumented immigrants across the bay area... and now a local group is taking action. "siren" is an immigration non-profit based in san jose. they have established a rapid response network after recent immigration sweeps. the group will send text messages which will alert the community if sweeps are happening. it will also bring together immigration attorneys and community activists. "like activists that are willing to come down and do a shield of protection if there's an ice sweep in their neighborhood or work site." siren is also building a network of temporary shelters or safe houses for

we're coming up on 6:45... here's a quick look at the top stories we're following this morning... police are looking for the person who shot at an off duty police officer in oakland. it happened just before midnight when the officer was shot at in the 880 south and 16th avenue area. this is the third shooting on an east bay freeway since saturday. the officer was not injured. and... another cabinet pick by president trump is under scrutiny this morning for communications with russia. official say attorney general jeff sessions had two conversations with the russian ambassador to the united states while sessions was working for the trump campaign. attorney general sessions says he never met with any russian officials to discuss issues of the 14 people are without a home this morning after an apartment fire in south san francisco. the fire happened just before 5 on olive avenue.

in fact, the report says a large area of the south bay... especially around gilroy and and beyond into the central coast... has the highest risk of experiencing an earthquake large enough to cause severe damage. this is video of some of the damage caused by the south napa earthquake a couple of years ago. that quake had a magnitude of 6.0. by the way, the other state with the highest risk of a major earthquake this year is oklahoma. but, unlike california, scientists say most of that state's earthquakes are caused by oil and gas drilling. water flow at lake oroville's spillway has come to a halt... as workers are now assessing the damage and coming up with a solution to fix the damaged spillway. with a break in the rain, crews are currently removing debris from the base of the spillway. the clean-up will help lower water levels and make it possible to reboot this hydro powerplant sitting under the dam. once all that is in place... crews will use the hydro plant to get water out of the lake. officials say the ultimate
