have had to respond to a mercury spill in this neighborhood in the past 4 months. you can see the some of the areas roped off with yellow tape behind me.the epa says they've narrowed the spill down to six locations on this street, which is why they were able to reopen the street to cars. scientists and hazmat crews were out here until 3am this morning and back out again using special air sensors to test for mercury on the groundand vacumning up the liquid metal..which often looks very similar to broken glass.that same sensor..was used on all the sidewalks and pathways to homes and made sure that those are clear.because they don't want people to track it into their homes.because long term exposure to smaller amounts of mercury can cause nerve damage.luckily none was detected which why there were no evacuations and no injurues reported.at this point they don' t know exactly how much mercury was spilled.or how it got there.it can come from a lot of different things. equipment, older pieces of medical equipment anything

that was a heat sensitive kind of switch can have mercury in it and sometimes it can have a lot of mercury in it. and if you threw it away and didn't know that it had mercury it didn't have anything to indicate it through the garbage and it broke and it could leak that way . it could've been that someone found a jar and just tossed in the trash and that's how it could happen, we just don't know we do these cleanups and these emergency response things several times a year. residents who live in the area say they are worried especially about the children in the area.it's been a very long time and i'm tired of the street being closed off and they couldn't even go outside and play yesterday i'm kind of scared still now.the spill sites are being vacumed again today in case the mercury got into the cracks.after this work is done they will be handing out information educating the public about what kind of things contain mercury and letting them know how they can dispose of household hazaderous waste items for free .there were two other much smaller mercury spills back in december and januaryjust one street over, but it's unclear if those are connected to this one.. one possibility is that these incidents could be related to illegal dumpingwhich is a common problem in antioch. maureen kelly kron4 news. parts per trillion.that same sensor..was used on all the sidewalks and pathways to homes and made sure that those are clear.because they don't want people to track it into their homes..luckily none was detected outside of these roped off areas which why there were no evacuations and no injurues reported.and what are the things with mercury is that it's a liquid metal, that starts at a pretty low temperature room temperature or above and the breathing the vapors is the most dangerous part of elemental mercury. so when we're outside it's a lot better there's a lot more air moving around and so it evaporates and dissipates . what our concern is we will make sure that people don't track it from the street into their homes where they are in a more controlled space so that's really to worry. do you see us were walking around we're here we don't need breeding protection so as long as the resident stay out of the roped off areas it's fine. at this point they don' t know exactly how much mercury was spilled.or how it got there.
