(vicki) the return of the rain has road crews once again keeping an eye on active slide areas and other trouble spots. (grant) kron four's rob fladeboe is live in the santa cruz mountains where the earth is moving once again.... amid the latest wet weather. rob? i'm here at highway 17 and bear creek road where this big pile of mud and debris kind of tells the story. this is where caltrans is dumping the mud slides that have been occurring throughoutthe area. and with each day, even when it's not raining, the pile gets a little bit bigger. it didn't seem like all that

much but the three inches of rain that fell here in the summit road area overnight was enough to make one of two slides that are blocking soquel-san jose road that much worse. but there are signs people are foolishly trying to get through anyway. officer trista drake/chp< "even if it looks like a car can get through safely, it usually isn't, which is why we have these hard closures. we already had to remove one stuck vehicle, a 4 by 4 truck that thought it cold get through but it couldn't...">on highway 17, the emergency repairs on that large slide near sugar loaf road is holding but there are still a number of smaller, active slides on both sides of the summit. caltrans is clearing clogged storm drains in those areas but mud and rocks are still finding their way onto the highway, sometimes into the path of unsuspecting drivers says the chp.trista drake/chp

(vicki) today the criminal trial began for three jail guards charged with murdering an inmate at santa clara jail. opening statements in the trial of sheriffs deputies jereh lubrin, rafael rodriguez, and matthew farris happened this morning. they've plead not guilty to charges of murdering 31-year old michael tyree in august of 2015. authorities say he was beaten to death. the jail guards are also accused of assaulting another inmate as well. (grant) antioch police have identified a man who and officer shot and injured... after police say he rammed a patrol car with his vehicle. it happened thursday night during a pursuit that started on mokelumne drive. 49-year-old anthony terry is facing multiple felony charges including assault on a police officer and illegal possession of a firearm. officers were not injured. the name of the officer who shot terry

(vicki) a santa cruz county town is mourning after police say a father shot and killed his daughter then took his own life. now the community is coming together to help the family in need. a go-fund-me page has been set up in honor of 7-year-old elizabeth yaxtel tapia. on sunday afternoon she was fatally shot by her father who then took his own life. elizabeth's mother called police to report her husband was acting suicidal. when police arrived- the two were found dead in the father's car. members of the community- still in shock - say there needs to be more conversation about what to do when dealing with this type of situation. (vicki) capitola police and the assistant director of the suicide crisis line say the

(grant) 2 good samaritans were able to apprehend a suspect who tried to rob an elderly woman in the east bay. it happened at the chase suites hotel on cedar boulevard in newark. police say an 18 year old man assaulted an elderly woman and took her purse. 2 good samaritans where able to chase down the man and get the purse back. they held down the man until police arrived. the suspect was booked into the santa rita jail on multiple charges including robbery and elder abuse. (philippe)nats- tree moving this downed oak tree wasn't done moving by the time city of vallejo inspectors arrived to assess the damage on capital street early in the morning...veronica mcelroy/homeowner- "we were awakened by what we thought was an earthquake." but by the time veronica mcelroy called 9-11 just after two o'clock in the morning... she realized it was the large oak tree on her front lawn that toppled onto her home... damaging power lines as well.veroncia mcelroy/homeo wner- "the house was red tagged after pg&e cut the power."bridge an arborist says the tree was rotting from its roots... and, because of the strong winds and saturated soils -- it came down.veronia mcelroy/homeo wner- "we've been here 11 years, this is our eleventh year, and when we first moved here, um, i called out a company to come and cut the tree, because i wasn't fond of it at all." mcelroy later decided against having the tree removed... because she says the permitting

(grant) an elderly driver in pleasant hill...smashed through the bedroom of their neighbor's home...causing major damage. police on scene say the driver's foot slipped off the brake and accidentally hit the gas.

it sent them through the wall of the pleasnt hill home around 10 in the morning yesterday. fortuantely no one was hurt. this is on fair oaks drive in pleasant hill. today homeowners boarded up the hole in their bedroom and are starting to clean up the mess. the driver lives just down the road...and police say since this was an accident..the driver was not cited. (anchor) the closure of pfeiffer canyon bridge on highway 1 in the big sur area is having a big impact on residents there. heavy rain in january and february damaged the bridge beyond repair. the closure stranded more than 400 residents on one side. a new bridge will be built in six to nine months. luckily business owner kurt mayer has kept his deli and taproom open for residents. however, it's a move that is costing him money. he's keeping his doors open for the locals who need produce, milk and propane because they

educator in marin county pleaded not guilty today to charges he faces for owning and distributing child pornography. john morrison is not in custody after posting bail. the 71-year- old was arrested at his home in san francisco last week after investigators found traces of child pornography being uploaded... and átradedá on his computer. morrison had... in the past...taught film classes to young children in marin... according to police. his next court date set for april 28th. a texas high school science teacher is charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student. police in lockhart say 27-year-old sarah fowkles 'engaged in sexual contact' with a 17-year-old male student. investigators say they received a report from a school administrator regarding a potential inappropriate relationship between the two. officers determined the student had been in contect with fowkles - and issued a warrant for her arrest. fowkles has been suspended by the school district - pending the investigation. has gone to washington. the governor is on capitol hill this week to looking for federal money to help the recovery efforts following the winter storms that caused flooding in san jose and damaged the oroville dam spill way. he's also pushing for funding for a major project in the bay area. we talked to governor brown today about his efforts... you will hear from him tonight on kron 4 news at six. grant now back to you. (vicki) since former 49ers receiver dwight clark announced his als diagnosis, there's been an increased awareness of the effects of the fatal disease. yesterday-- kron4 news brought you a story of a man who's living with the illness. today-- we take a closer look at a possible connection between the disease and head trauma. sure if playing football is the cause of his diagnosis, he suspects it may have played a part. mark carpenter took a closer look at this issue...and joins us with more. mark? (mark) ever since clark's announcement, one of the questions that's been presented-- does football cause als? to explore this, i spoke with the experts at the san francisco-based 'gladstone institutes'-- an organization that specializes in researching neurological diseases. chief specialist dr. steve finkbeiner says as of now, research does not show a definitive link between the sport and als. "that connection has been looked at

in a variety of epidemiological studies. whether it's physical activity, physical fitness or some sort of head trauma and the studies don't agree basically. so some studies seem to suggest there may be a link and one or more of those dimensions may increase your risk for als, but others aren't able to replicate it." dr. steve finkbeiner...exp laining one of the frustrating aspects of researching a complex disease like als. one of the scientific links that has been confirmed over the last several years... is repeated shots to the head can lead to chronic traumatic encephelopathy. like als, cte is associated with neurodegeneration....however, the illnesses aren't intertwined. "we know that there's a clear connection between head trauma and changes that the brain undergoes that are connected to neurodegeneration, even if we don't have a specific path to als." a possible byproduct of dwight clark's diagnosis...is increased als awareness. youou may remember the ice bucket challenge craze from 2014...a trend that went viral and raised millions of dollars for als research. fred fisher, president als association-golden west chapter, says clark's status as a public figure has a

chance to advance scientific studies... and finally, find a cure. "every time a new famous person gets diagnosed with als it helps us remind people of the ice bucket challenge and helps us remind people that we need more funding so we can drive more research, so we can get to that cure quicker." body-worn camera... and you can see the firefighter approach the burning home on 45th street. you then see the effort to knock down the flames and other firefighters assisting. if appears they are using not only a hose to douse the fire... but an axe to clear the way or vent the walls. according to a tweet... they were trying to save the house with what they call an "aggressive attack." no word on whether anyone was hurt and what the extent of the damage was to the home. (steve ) today marks eight years since four oakland police officers were killed in the line of duty. it had all started with a traffic stop of a man named lovelle mixon on macarthur boulevard mixon was a convicted felon wanted for a parole violation. he shot the two officers who pulled him over and then holed up in a nearby apartment on 74th avenue. as a swat team moved in, there was a shootout. mixon was killed.... but not before two more officers died. it was one of the worst attacks on law enforcement in californa history. had mixon gave himself up... he would have

still the tree leaned up against the home through the early afternoon... as a tree company worked to remove the more than century old oak on capital street.julian cabrera/arborist- "the tree tipped over because it got root rot, which means the roots were decomposed under. maybe for, its been here for 200 years, 150 years. so, its just water and wind, that's what caused the tree to fall there."bridge mcelroy says she looked into having this tree removed about 11 years ago when she moved in... but says she was put of by the permitting process and just dropped it.veronica mcelroy/homeowner- "we started the process and we were going to do it, but there was just so much red tape and jumping through so many hoops, and the cost of the permit, so we just said forget it at that time and now 10 years later, its coming down, not by choice, mother nature decided." city spokesperson joanna altman says the price for a permit to have a tree removed is close to 500 dollars. and, that the public works director is looking into whether or not any more trees are in jeapordy of falling down.joanna altman/city of vallejo- "we have an old city, so we have old trees." by the afternoon, a building inspector removed the red tag

on the mcelroy's home... but whether the city will pay for the repairs, or the bill gets pushed to the mcelroy's has yet to be determined. in vallejo, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( pam ) something we will be watching the next few days... as the next round of storms rolls through ... is the water level at the anderson reservoir in morgan hill. it was last month... that all the rain caused the reservoir to overflow and spill into coyote creek. water officials had already been releasing water through the spillway ... to try to keep the water level down. coyote creek breached its banks and flooded sections of san jose... leading to hundreds of people evacuating from their homes. since that time, the water level has been slowly dropping . when we checked today.. it was at just under 86- percent of capacity. officials say, the reservoir water level is gradually going down at the rate of about a foot a day. but it is not even close to where it needs to be.( pam ) the santa clara valley water district needs to get the

level down to 68-percent of capacity ... that will allow the agency to do a seismic upgrade to the reservoir. (pam) in the east bay... public works crews are taking advantage of the break in the wet weather .... to prepare for the next big storm.(steve) one hill in particular has caught the attention of public works because the hill has slid recently and is showing signs of coming down again... kron4's haaziq madyun shows you where it is happening with this break in-between storms...hazard reducing road work was the focus here on taylor blvd in pleasant hill. this contra costa county public works crew used shovels to clear debris from concerte storm ditches up and down the roadway. in this wide camera shot you can see the impact of the recent rain on this section of the hillthese workers say this hill is a known trouble spot when it rains. in fact, they say last month when we had multiple

although she tried to charge a large amount .. the account was frozen and the suspect got away. authorities say, she has done this before in other states. (steve) a children's film educator in marin county pleaded not guilty today to charges he faces for owning and distributing child pornography. john morrison is not in custody after posting bail. the 71-year- old was arrested at his home in san francisco last week after investigators found traces of child pornography being uploaded... and átradedá on his computer. morrison had... in the past...taught film classes to young children in marin... according to police. his next court date set for april 28th. (steve) deputies were able to return a stolen bike to a marin child over the weekend. the bike- which was a chrsitmas gift- was stolen from a front yard in the san geronimo valley. the victim saw his bike on a website and alerted the sheriff's department. deputies arranged to meet the seller in the industrial area

(steve) a big bust in sonoma county. detectives recovered 60-grams of methanphetamine after serving a search warrant linked to a sales investigation. sonoma county sheriff's say they found the stash of drugs after pulling over albert basso in his vehicle yesterday. a later search of basso's home uncovered another 1-and-a quarter pounds of the same drug, numerous packages for sales, and 36- hundred dollars in cash. basso has been arrested for drug sales violations multiple times dating back to 19-79. since yesterday's arrest he has been released after posting 40-thousand dollars bond. we are learning more about a police chase last month ... that ended with a michigan state trooper being attacked.(steve) dashcam video of the february 20th chase was released this week. it shows state trooper garry guild chasing down 21-year-old michael barber, who authorities say was riding a stolen motorcycle. the chase ends when barber crashes, but he and the trooper get into a struggle. during the struggle, barber's brother shows up and puts trooper guild in a chokehold. two good samaritans then come to the scene to help the trooper. barber and his brother are charged with assault and resisting an officer, among other charges. in sports... we will check in on the warriors- mavericks... ... and barry bonds is back with the giants... gary has that story... and all the sports... coing up
