(unidentified source): "it was surreal. i think all of us were in shock and numb." butted to "there was a lot of blood and we didn't know where it was coming from. people on the street say they saw her fall head first." u-c berkeley is offering support to tze's family. the university is also providing counseling services to students and staff who may need it. (grant) activists are conducting a hunger strike in front of city hall in san jose. they are trying to pressure the city council to pass a series of laws to

protect the rights of renters. kron 4's rob fladaboe has the latest from san jose. silicon valley renters rights coalition and other community groups began their hunger strike, dubbed "fast for renters' rights," on friday and series of vigils to pressure the san jose city council to pass a number of tenant protections at its meeting tomorrow. the hunger strike began friday night at the san jose city hall.

(catherine) police are now offering a reward of up to 50-thousand dollars for informationon steve stephens... he's accused of killing a retired cleveland man... the victim - 74-year-old robert godwin senior - had 10 children and 14 grandchildren.he was reportedly picking up aluminum cans in a field when he was gunned down. some reports indicate the suspect was upset with a girlfriend he'd broken up with....and on the facebook video -- had asked his elderly victim to say her name - adding 'she's the reasonthis is happening to you.' but cleveland's police chief put the blame squarely on stephens ... cleveland police chief:we've interviewed several people involved in this and i don't think there's any rhyme or reason for it happening. i don't think there's anything we can point to specifically that this is what sparked this. we're all standing here because of what unfortunately

eastwood plaza shopping center before police arrived. officers say the suspect was stopped saturday on cashew street near beechnut street where he was taken into custody. the victim was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition following the shooting. wilson was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen gun. (grant) oakland police are looking for three people in connection with a sexual assault and kidnapping. it happened saturday night near 63rd and international boulevard... few blocks from greenleaf elementary school. police tell us a woman was assaulted and kidnapped around 10 p-m. the woman managed to get away. she has brusing, swelling and a minor cut. (grant) in san francisco... a police officer was injured this morning while trying to stop two car theft suspects. this was just after 4-30 near mission and allison streets. officers responded to a call about a stolen car...at which point... the driver sped away. police say an officer was getting out of his partol car when the suspects crashed into his driver's side door.

the suspects then got out of the car and ran. officers caught the driver... the other suspect got away. authorities say one officer suffered a minor injury and did not need medical attention. the names of the suspects have not been released. (vicki) reverend jesse jackson and other activists joined members of the n-double a-c-p at san francisco international airport today to protest the alleged mistreatment of doctor david dao. this is a live look at the airport. the group gathered at the united airline's domestic flight check-in area at noon today. doa was the passenger who was forcefully removed from a united flight earlier this month. he was violently dragged off the plane after refusing to relinquish his seat to a united employee. according to dao's attorneys... he suffered a concussion and broke a couple of teeth. they say he also broke his nose, damaged his sinuses and may need reconstructive surgery. a santa clara county judge has dismissed a rape charge against former san francisco 49ers defensive lineman ray mcdonald. prosecutors said the woman who made the allegationsrefused to testify today. so, just a few hours ago, the judge dismissed the charge...-one count of rape of an intoxicated person. the female victim said she injured her head while intoxicated.... after slipping and falling on a pool deck at mcdonald's san jose home back in 20-14. she accused mcdonald of then carryign her inside and sexually assaulting her. mcdonald...faced a maximum of eight years in prison. it's unclear if the alleged victim received money from mc-donald... in return for not testifying. (grant) and about a week ago. the 49ers released former cornerback tremaine brock. brock was arrested by santa clara police over a domestic violence incident. police say his girlfriend had visible injuries. brock

posted 50-thousand doallars bail. he refused to talk to anyone after leaving santa clara's county jail. (grant) the raiders may be off to las vegas, but in the meantime, they have shallow roots in oakland. (vicki) after so much off-field business over the last several months, we can finally talk some football. the team...opened its off-season workout program today.. and among those back on the field-- quarterback derek carr. the arkansas supreme court has barred a judge who blocked the state's multiple executions plan after he participated in a protest. just last week the judge prohibited the state from using a lethal injection drug from san francisco-based company - mckesson. mckesson has argued the drug was not supposed to be used for capital punishment in the first place. on friday the judge participated in an anti-death penalty demonstration. as a result justices reassigned the cases from the judge. witnesses say he was strapped to a cot... as though he were a condemned man on a gurney.

(vicki) officers say a drunk driver may have killed 2 mini horses in sonoma county. who police have arrested in connection with the crime. (grant) plus a 9 foot gator was found on a south carolina porch. the homeowner explains what happened after he made the discovery.

suspicion of being involved in a hit and run that killed two mini horses early saturday morning. they believe ronald rennert is responsible for crashing into a coral and killing scout and big red. moments after the incident... an officer on duty noticed rennert damaged his car he was pulled over after swerving all over the road. when police asked him if he was involved in a car crash... he denied it. the oakland man posted bail and is scheduled for a court hearing on may fifth. the owner of the two horses thanks c-h-p and cotati police for identyfying the suspect. (grant) a family in south carolina had a rude awakening on easter morning. they found a nine-foot alligator on their porch that had no intention of leaving.

at first, the polston family thought someone was breaking in to their mount pleasant home. what's really shocking is how much work the alligator had to do a lot to break in... it climbed a 15-foot staircase, broke a screen and walked through a doorway and then rearranged furniture. steve polston, mount pleasant resident:"he just simply wouldn't turn, then he became more aggressive.he started lunging, trashing you know growling quite a bit."(grant) a wildlife expert helped them remove the alligator from their porch. (vicki) the problems continue to mount for highways in the atlanta-area. take a look at these pictures... a portion of highway 20 in southeast atlanta buckled this morning... completely shutting down the road. authorities say the highway buckled because of an underground gas leak... leaving a huge bump. witnesses say the bump was up to three feet high.

there is no word on when the highway will reopen. this comes less than a month after a section of highway 85 collapsed after a massive fire. kaplan. if she were to win in 2018, she would be oakland's first two-term mayor since jerry brown. brown held the office from 1999 to 2007. schaaf has dealt with a myriad of issues including a sex scandal at the police department and two deadly fires that have raised questions about the inspection process. ( steve ) those are just a few of things that have happened while schaaf has been in office.( pam ) there are others ... most notably, the departure of two of the city's professional sports team. grant lodes is here with a closer look at the mayor's tenure... ( grant ) elections are usually run on issues.. and when you are talking about oakland... crime is one of them. the city has a reputation for being among the most violent... but we pulled up the statistics. it is a much different story. if you are the mayor, this is something you can point to as a success. overall, violent crime has fallen steadily since schaaf took office. it dropped 5- percent in 2016 versus 2015...

that was her first full year in office. homcides have actually gone up slightly each year but remain below the five year average. this year's numbers show 20-17 being a little more violent than 2016... but still below average. there is no questioning oakland's passion for its sports teams but the raiders set to leave for las vegas, that might be something people hold against the mayor. schaaf pointed out the n-f-l made her choose between the football team or kicking out the oakland a's. we know how it ended. however the mayor held her ground when it came to not handing over public money for a new stadium. the warriors are also leaving oakland...the dubs are san francisco bound... leaving a vacancy at oracle arena. this was something that was in the works a while and wheels were in motion before schaaf took office. the current warriors ownership group tipped its hand when taking over... making many big

announcements in san francisco. and then there are the a's. by all indications the long search for a ballpark is going to come to an end this year. team management has said it plans to make an announcement... and all indications are the team is staying. the question is where... maybe the waterfront or perhaps they will take over the entire coliseum site and do a ballpark along with some housing and retail space. so the mayor has her wins and a few losses that people could be thinking about when they vote next year. pam. (pam) in the south bay a santa clara county judge has dismissed a rape charge against former san francisco 49ers- defensive lineman- ray mcdonald. prosecutors said, the woman who made the allegations refused to testify today. so, just a few hours ago, the judge dismissed the charge... one count of rape of an intoxicated person. the female said, she injured her head while intoxicated.... after slipping and

falling on a pool deck at mcdonald's san jose home back in 20-14. she accused mcdonald of then carrying her inside and sexually assaulting her. mcdonald... faced a maximum of eight years in prison. it is unclear if the alleged victim received money from mc-donald... in return for not testifying. (steve) in the north bay: they are looking into the attempted rape of a jogger yesterday near sonoma. a 24-year-old woman says she was jogging along the sonoma overlook trail just after 1 p- m. she says a man yelled at her near norrbom road but she kept going. she says she was suddenly pushed from behind and suspect fell on top her... punching her several times. the was able to escape and call for help. the attacker is described as being whtie and his fifties with a white, bushy beard. he had on black clothing and a beanie and his jeans were dirty. (pam) new tonight, a family in rural san mateo county says, a mountain lion took their dog

from inside their house.... (steve)it happened early this morning near the town of pescadero. thankfully, no one was injured but authorities are saying this is an extremely rare occurrence. kron 4's charles clifford is live for us tonight in san mateo county with details. charles, do we know how the mountain lion was able to get inside the home? well apparently, the family left a bedroom door open while they were sleeping so their small dog could get in and out of the house and that's where the mountain lion snuck in. take vothis is video of the area from our helicopter partnership with abc 7. this all happened around 3 monday morning. when the family heard their dog barking at the foot of the bed. a witness says she looked up and saw a shadow enter through the door, take the dog and then walk out. she grabbed flashlight and tried to find the dog but only found large paw prints outside the house. now, the family called 911 and san mateo county

sheriff's deputies came and searched the area. they couldn't find any trace of the mountain lion or the dog. they also say mountain lion sightings are common in this area but they rarely attack pets and it's virtually unheard of for a big cat to enter a home. they're just glad no one was hurt. (det. salvador zuno/san mateo county sheriff's office spokesman): "we are working with the department of fish and wildlife. we are going to asses this as it goes. we are treating this as a rare, isolated incident."now, the sheriff's department believes this is an isolated incident. they haven't gotten any other reports of mountain lion sighting in the are recently. finally, the sheriff' department says they are also working with state fish and wildlife to determine if there is any additional danger or further steps that should be taken. in san mateo county charles clifford kron 4 news.

( steve ) another big story tonight... is the manhunt for the guy you see on your t-v right now. steve stephens. he is wanted for posting a video on facebook showing a brutal killing. (vicki) yeah pam, steve... we know that there's a growing opioid epidemic out there... now - comes this new yahoo survey that says two thirds of us say common opioid drugs like as vicodin or oxycontin are "riskier" to use than pot, even when the pain pills are prescribed by a doctor. as we've been

reporting on kron4 news... some two million americans are hooked on opioids and that can lead to heroin... it's in our schools and our neighborhoods. and every day, prescription pain-killers or heroin kill 91 people. many many more over-dose and are brought back from the brink of death. so, it's no surprise that people are concerned about prescription pill-popping. in that survey - onlyone in five believe pot is riskier than opioids. an over-whelming 83% say pot should be legal for medical use. but they were less comfortable with children and pregnant women using pot to treat medical conditions. the fda has since directed doctors to prescribe fewer pain-killers to patients. and last month, president trump appointed an opioid commission to look into the heroin epidemic. vicki liviakis kron 4 news ( steve ) a new and innovative way of growing food without using dirt has carved a niche in california's
