as just a small crack, but then the ground gave way and opened up. this is the large landslide located behind the bay park retirement community and buddisht temple in pinole - as you can see it created a giant pit in the ground. all of this, a stark contrast to what it did look like - look here - in these exclusive pictures obtained by kron four, you can see how it was a road, linking the retirement facility's parking lot to the temples - the road was starting to crumble - and crack.. and then this - this is a overhead view from our helicopter partnership with abc seven news - the hole enormous now - and impacting residents who call bay park home. stephen harris. it saddens me. the road just opened up, a few cracks and that was it. terisa estacio, reporting, pinole and see that behind me, that is a mini loader, they are making a path, to bring in an excavator, so that they can go in - dig up dirt and figure out how deep it is and whether it is going to get any worse. the back park of the retirement home where an exercising room and dinning area have been shut down as a precaution. tamara miller, pinole city engineer. we are

ki) the american dream of home ownership is increasingly just that, a dream, for teachers in silicon valley. (grant) kron four's rob fladeboe has a look at the impact in one of the south bay's largest school districts. elizalde mazon teaches 7 th and 8th grade algebra and geometry here at hoover middle school in the san jose unified school district. but even after 11 years in the district, he can't afford to live in san jose so he commutes every day from the central valley. elizalde mazon/can't afford to live in san jose" it's difficult. i have been looking for a home
5:24 pm
in san jose, but i just can't afford it with the salary i make now, even what i made 7 years ago..."with the median home price at $917,903 dollars and rising, roughly 2 percent of the homes insan jose are affordable to teachers with a starting salary of roughly $50- 55,000. that means some teachers cant even think of taking a job here while others are thinking of moving on. jennifer thomas/san jose teacher's union " it's the number one reason why we lose teachers years after year in public education, can't afford a house, can't afford the rent so they move out of the area leaving leaving students to meet with new teachers every year and substantively impacting their education..." peter allen/san jose unified school district" this presents a real challenge when you're trying to recruit new teachers
5:25 pm
from out of the area or attracting new teachers who are just starting out and trying to establish themselves here, it's a big challenge for us..."the city council on tuesday provided some protection against no cause evictions but activists claim that a six figure income is needed just to rent a decent apartment in san jose. that is out of reach for not just teachers but also many first responders and police to say nothing of food service workers. which is why elizalde mazon bought a home in tracy, for less than half of what it might have cost him in silicon valley. elizalde mazon/can't afford to live in san jose" i used to live about five minutes from here in an apartment but the rent just kept going up so if i thought if i can afford to but a house someplace else, i don't mind the commute..."in san jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news (vicki) still ahead... we are following breaking news out of the east bay - where police activity has shutdown the walnut creek bart station. this is causing a major back up. we'll have a live report - with more details after the break.

new facelift is almost complete."new plaster, new carpets, refinished the floors, new upholstery on the pews"bridgeconstruction has been focused on the church's sanctuary as well as its roof, so the congregation can get back in here as soon as possible to worship. as for the main building, what's to become of it is yet to be decided."right now it's really an open question for us. we know what our values are, we long to serve the community more deeply. it's our moral obligation to put it into the service of those in need and those who are suffering in our wider community"but before any of that can happen, they need more money. with an estimated 9 million dollars in damage, the church received 100- thousand in donations that helped with the current repairs. however they're a long way from a complete rehabilitation."we think that every time something bad happens it's god's doing, and god doesn't send those things but he uses those things to help us grow"the congregation has been worshipping at another location in north berkeley. their sanctuary is on schedule to reopen for pentecost, a "high holy day" the first sunday in june. reporting in berkeley..

of the support structure of the eighty year old bridge has moved a fraction of an inch. that was enough to declare it unsafe for any traffic.it's a serious closure for pedestrians and bicyclists. we know it's an imposition but for safety reasons we can't let anybody across.a portion of moraga is on the other side of this bridge and there is also the unincorporated town of canyon that's over there.beside the long commute those residents face it means emergency services will have to be coordinated to insure their safety. alameda county sheriff's will take some of that responsibilty.we'll also be coordinating with other agencies. oakland police, east bay regional parks police which has units in the area all the time to see in the case of an emergency situation to get assistance in as soon as possible.just how long that coordination and lengthy commutes will go on is still to be determined.right now there is no timeline.in moraga jeff pierce kron four news
