( james ) a man on an evening walk in the east bay is stabbed at random. it happened week in berkeley. police this morning have released a sketch of the man they are looking for. kron four's j-r stone has the story. police are saying this was random. they don't know what led to this but say this assailant may have some mental issues. tonight they need your help in catching him. this is a sketch of the man who police say stabbed another man who was out walking his dog near john hinkel park in north berkeley. now officers need your help in identifying the assailant who they believe acted on a random impulse. suspect and victim weren't known to each other. it was unprovoked..it was not a robbery gone array.no words were exchanged..for some unknown reason the suspect cut the victim.a cut to the stomach that was so bad the victim had to be transported to the hospital. those out walking their dogs on tuesday night said they hadn't heard

about the case and are quite surprised by it.sot never heard it before you know it's pretty random like how a person got stabbed walking the dog.the stabbing happened just before 8 pm last friday night. the suspect is described as white, five foot ten to six feet tall, at least 160 pounds with sandy colored hair and facial hair.sot i don't recall at least seeing himsot oh well glad you gave me a heads up i mean if somebody walks towards me i don't know i'll act differently now so i think it's good to get the word out. officers aren't clear if the man is a transient. they do tell us there are rarely any problems at john hinkel park. my wife comes up here pretty frequentlyfor me if someone comes at me i will react a bit differently. i'm actually more concerned about her than i am myself.

( james ) happening now... police looking for a man who lifted a girl's skirt in pleasant hill. police got a call yesterday afternoon about a man chasing a girl on vili way near morello avenue. that's near diablo valley college. when police showed up, he was gone. after talking to the girl, police were able to describe the attacker as a man being between 40 and 50 years old, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing 160 pounds, with a bald head or very short hair. he was wearing a green shirt and tan gray pants. ( james ) happening today... closing arguments continue in the trial of the man accused of killing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. sierra's family and and friends filled the court room yesterday as those closing arguments began. sierra disappeared on her way to school back in 2012. her body has never been found.

was shot. police have not released any information about the shooter. officers are looking into the possibility that it was a targeted crime rather than a random act. ( james ) as the weather heats up there are more rattle snakes being reported around the bay area. a 47-year- old man from santa clara is still in serious condition this morning after he was bitten by a rattle snake. it happened in fremont at the mission peak regional preserve area. he mistakenly put is hand down on a rattlesnake he though was a rock. the east bay regional park district warns the high temperatures are bringing out the snakes... in just the past week, the park district says there have been six reported rattlesnake sightings at east bay parks. ( james ) the warriors take on the jazz at oracle arena for game one of the western conferece semi-finals. the dubs 2007 "we believe" team is honored before the game. in the second quarter, steph curry makes rudy gobert ((go-bear)) look silly with the cross over and

neither the baton rouge mayor nor the the governor of louisiana say they have been notified of a decision. the justice department is expected to make the announcement later today. ( james ) a man arrested after a body was found near the santa cruz beach boardwalk has been released from jail due to a lack of evidence. police say kevin callahan admitted to choking steven lee saturday but told investigators he was still alive when he left him. the body was discovered near the volley ball courts on the santa cruz main beach. police say an autopsy was performed on lee but there is insufficient evidence on how he died. ( james ) a heated debate this morning over whether some east bay schools should be allowed to break away from the mount diablo school district. people against the plan say it's really an attempt to create an affluent new school district. kron four's charles clifford has the story. earlier this year a petition, with more than six thousand signatures, was submitted to the contra costa county board of education requesting that a new school district, the northgate unified school district, be carved from the existing mount diablo school district.mount diablo is made up of 56 schools serving more than 32 thousands students. it covers a large portion of the east bay stretching from martinez to walnut creek. pleasnant hill to clayton.the

proposed northgate district would separate away the 4200 hundreds students at northgate high school, foothill middle school and three elementary schools. supporters say that they are unhappy with the way mount diablo is run.sotwe have stayed for 40 years and tried to make it better and it's to big. mt diablo does not address the needs of the communitythe mount diablo school district administration, including superintendent nellie meyers, strongly opposes the plan.sot we believe our students will not be served as well if five schools leave. we believe we can provide more programs and more support for less funding. the proposal has generated passionate feelings on both sides. some opponents of the plan have accused organizers of wanting to create an affluent new school district. something that supporters of the plan flatly deny.sotnone of that is true. this is not about segregation. we are following the boundaries set

by the school district. tuesday's meeting before the county was only a public hearing, the proposal has a long road to travel before coming a reality. if the county approves the plan, it would have to get the blessing of state education officials and then be approved by voters. ( james ) the man accused of a mass killing at an oakland university has pleaded no contest in a plea deal. 48-year-old one goh killed seven people at oikos university in 20-12. prosecutors say he dropped out of oikos several months before the shooting and wanted his tuition refunded. goh's plea deal calls for him to spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. his formal sentencing is set for july. half of the 40 tents at a city sanctioned homeless encampment at 35 and magnolia went up in flames luckily no one was injured. this is the third fire at a homeless encampment in 3 weeks earlier monday there was a fire at the encampment at 5th and market and on april 13, 5 tents burned and a dog died when fire raced through a homeless encampment at 22nd avenue and 880 city officials say shutting down homeless encampments isn't the ansersot oakland city officials says this city sanctioned encampment, which came with bathrooms and services allowed them to move the initial 40 residents into housing at a faster place. because of the fire, this location will close on friday. but city officials say they plan to find a location for a

new concern over flooding in the sierra this morning. there's a flood advisory for the entire truckee river between lake tahoe and pyramid lake in nevada. the reason for the warning is the snow melt. water officials are increasing flows out of lake tahoe to try and reduce the risk of flooding. the run-off from the snow melt is expected to last well into june and cause minor flooding in the area.

according to a report from the associated press. the shooting death outside a baton rouge convenience store last july sparked nationwide protests. alton sterling, an african american man, was selling c-ds outside the store when police answered a 9-1-1 call about man with gun. the two white officers were placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting. sterling's family members were upset they found out about the decision in the case from the media and not authorities. ( anny ) the justice department's official statement says there has been no official decision released. neither the baton rouge mayor nor the the governor of louisiana say they have been notified of a decision. the justice

( mark ) happening now... there are growing concerns about fires at homeless encampments in the east bay. in the last few weeks, there have been three in oakland. the latest happened monday night right under interstate 580. half of the 40 tents at a city sanctioned homeless encampment at 35th and magnolia streets went up in flames. no one was injured. there was also a fire earlier in the day at another encampment, and another one on april 13th. city officials say shutting down homeless encampments is not the answer. ( mark ) oakland fire officials say they may have to start including homeless encampments on their normal inspection routes to prevent more fires.

( darya ) happening today..ceremonies will be held across the bay area to honor fallen police officers. the san mateo county sheriff's association will be holding a ceremony at 10:00 this morning at the county history museum plaza in redwood city. and in the east bay... the city of oakland will also be holding a ceremony for officers killed in the line of duty. the events will start with a memorial on 7th street at 11:00 this morning followed by a ceremony where police chief anne kirkpatrick will deliver a memorial address. ( mark ) crews are searching for a 14-year-old boy who went missing while playing with friends on the american river. he was one of five teens who jumped off rocks into the river in folsom monday night. the folsom fire department says they looked for the boy for more than two hours before calling off the search. crews continued the search yesterday - but they say it has gone from a rescue to a recovery operation. ( darya ) a manhunt is underway for the gunman who shot and injured two chicago police officers. it happened late last night. the chicago police department says a car pulled up next to

announced it is adding more seats to its boeing 737 max jet liners. that means the seats in the economy class will have less leg room. the last three rows will have two inches less than it has now while the rest of the seats will have one inch less than it has now. american airlines will become the first large carrier in the united states to offer leg room with a pitch at the same price as spirit and frontier airlines. united is another major carrier considering this move. contra costa county education officials heard from parents about the plan last night. mount diablo is made up of 56 schools serving more than 32-thousand students. it covers a large portion of the east bay stretching from martinez to walnut creek, and pleasnant hill to clayton. the proposed northgate district, in red, would include five schools and 42-hundred students. opponents of the plan accuse county officials of wanting to create an affluent new school district, which supporters of the plan deny. ( darya ) if the county approves the plan, it would have to go through state education officials and then be approved by voters. francisco's outer sunset district. he has been identified as reajohn jackson of daly city. he was a sophomore at jefferson high school. police say the 15 year old had been driving a white pontiac at sunset boulevard and kirkham when he was shot. police have not released any information about the shooter. officers are looking into the possibility that it was a targeted crime rather than a random act. ( mark ) san francisco police are investigating another robbery on a muni train. this robbery happened monday morning in the mission district. a man was robbed of his cell phone. he was not seriously injured and the thief got away. this was the second robbery on a muni train in less than a week. last thursday, two people were robbed at gunpoint in the city's bayview district. they also had their cell phones stolen... as well as a wallet and jewelry. that thief is also still on the loose. man after crashing a car into a north bay pet store. we first broke this story yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. police say 26-year-old jeffery pearson, was speeding when he lost control of his car and crashed into the pet store in santa rosa. he told officers he smoked marijuana before driving. officers say he had also been drinking. nobody was hurt in the crash. ( darya ) this morning there are renewed efforts to find a missing 5-year-old boy in southern california. aramazd (ahr-uh-mahz) andressian junior went missing on april 22nd. he was last seen leaving disneyland with his father who was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. he was later released from custody because of lack of evidence. los angeles police are now offering a 10-thousand-dollar reward for information that helps find the boy. since the boy disappeared, police have searched the father's home... the park where the father was found unconscious and a lake. officials are

( darya ) new this morning... firefighters say a massive wildfire in santa barbara county last year was started by a man trying to put out a burning log. the sherpa fire burned nearly 10- thousand acres in the los padres national forrest. investigators say a man was burning a log in his fire place when the wind picked up and filled his house with smoke. that's when he took the burning log outside to put it under a faucet and dropped burning embers on the ground. more than 400 people had to be evacuated during that fire. charges in the death of alton sterling. that announcement is expected later today. anny hong is following the latest from the breaking news desk. anny. (anny) the us justice department, which led the investigation into the 2016 shooting, will close its investigation and not seek charges against the officers according to an associated press report. the shooting death outside a baton rouge convenience store last july sparked nationwide protests. alton sterling, an african american man, was selling c-ds outside the store when police answered a 9-1-1 call about man with gun. the two white officers were placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting. sterling's family members were upset they found out about the decision in the case from the media and not authorities.

( darya ) crews are searching for a 14-year-old boy who went missing while playing with friends on the american river. he was one of five teens who jumped off rocks into the river in folsom monday night. the folsom fire department says they looked for the boy for more than two hours before calling off the search. crews continued the search yesterday - but they say it has gone from a rescue to a recovery operation. ( mark ) changes could be coming to how you are paid for overtime. the house passed a bill that would allow employers to give workers paid time off instead of time-

and-a-half pay for overtime. republicans say the measure offers greater flexibility for employers and workers. democrats argue that the bill gives too much power to the employer. no democrats voted for the measure, and six republicans also voted against it. the bill now faces a vote in the senate. ( darya ) the number of air-b-n-b rentals in san francisco is expected to go down dramatically after the city settled a lawsuit with the company. san francisco estimates more than half of current air-b-n-b listings are not eligible to be registered and would need to stop hosting visitors. air-b-n-b hosts must now register with the city before posting rentals on the site. the san francisco based company says it is confident hosts will be able to comply with the new process. the bay area. a 47-year- old man from santa clara is still in serious condition this morning after he was bitten by a rattle snake. it happened in fremont at the mission peak regional preserve area. he mistakenly put is hand down on a rattlesnake he though was a rock. the east bay regional park district warns the high temperatures are bringing out the snakes... in just the past week, the park district says there have been six reported rattlesnake sightings at east bay parks.

communities are debating whether some schools should be allowed to break away from the mount diablo school district.( mark ) anny hong is here now to explain what's going on. anny? (anny @ landing) contra costa county education officials heared from parents about the plan last night. mount diablo is made up of 56 schools serving more than 32- thousand students. it covers a large portion of the east bay stretching from martinez to walnut creek, and pleasnant hill to clayton. the proposed northgate district, in red, would include five schools and 42- hundred students. opponents of the plan accuse county officials of wanting to create an affluent new school district, which supporters of the plan deny. ( mark ) we are learning more about the 15-year-old who was shot and killed in san francisco's outer sunset district. he has been identified as reajohn jackson of daly city. he was a sophomore at jefferson high school. police say the 15 year old had been driving a white pontiac at sunset boulevard and kirkham when he was shot. police have not released any information about the shooter. officers are looking into the possibility that it was a targeted crime rather than a random act. ( mark ) san francisco police are investigating another robbery on a muni train. this robbery happened monday morning in the mission district. a man was robbed of his cell phone. he was not seriously injured and the thief got away. this was the second robbery on a muni train in less than a week. last thursday, two people were robbed at gunpoint in the city's bayview district. they also had their cell phones stolen... as well as a wallet and jewelry. that thief is also still on the loose. today... a vigil will be held for the woman who was killed in the mass shooting in san diego. the gunman killed monique clark and injured six others before police shot and killed him. police say the victims were randomly targeted by peter selis. they say he was angry over a recent breakup. he called his ex-girlfriend during the attack so she could hear him shooting strangers. this morning we are hearing from a witness who says she was just feet away from selis during the shooting.

man after crashing a car into a north bay pet store. we first broke this story yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. police say 26-year-old jeffery pearson, was speeding when he lost control of his car and crashed into the pet store in santa rosa. he told officers he smoked marijuana before driving. officers say he had also been drinking. nobody was hurt in the crash. ( mark ) this morning there are renewed efforts to find a missing 5-year-old boy in southern california. aramazd (ahr-uh-mahz) andressian junior went missing on april 22nd. he was last seen leaving disneyland with his father who was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. he was later released from custody because

of lack of evidence. los angeles police are now offering a 10-thousand-dollar reward for information that helps find the boy. since the boy disappeared, police have searched the father's home... the park where the father was found unconscious and a lake. officials are hoping that the new reward will help spur new leads in the search effort. ( mark ) new this morning... firefighters say a massive wildfire in santa barbara county last year was started by a man trying to put out a burning log. the sherpa fire burned nearly 10- thousand acres in the los padres national forrest. investigators say a man was burning a log in his fire place when the wind picked up and filled his house with smoke. that's when he took the burning log outside to put it under a faucet and dropped burning embers on the ground. more than 400 people had to be evacuated during that fire.
