lyft driver being beaten intensified their efforts to find the persons responsible in san francisco haaziq madyun kron4news (vicki) new tonight at five, we are learning new details about the man who opened fire inside a u-p-s facility in san francisco on wednesday. police say 38- year-old jimmy lam shot and killed 3 co-workers before turning the gun on himself. kron 4's charles clifford is live for us tonight in san francisco with an update. charles? well, it's starting to appear that jimmy lam. .the shooter in this case . . . may have been a very troubled man who struggled with personal issues for a long time before wednesday's shooting at this ups facility. now, the associated press claims an sfpd official told them that the suspect in this case, jimmy lam, may have felt disrespected by his colleagues. one of lam's co- workers also told the a-p that he had struggled with personal issues and depression over the past few years. . it also appears at this point that lam may have targeted the three people he shot. this

afternoon, the sfpd declined to comment on camera for this story saying that this is still an ongoing investigation. now, one of lam's victims, 46-year old michael lefiti was a u-p-s driver in san francisco diamond heights neighborhood. he was very well liked and a large memorial has appeared in his honor. this afternoon i spoke with several neighbors who say they can't believe that anyone would have an issue with him. now, the woman you just heard from also tells me that they are looking into finding someway to create a permanent memorial for mike. a mural perhaps. i'm also told that' mike's family has been visting the memorial daily to gather up flowers and talk with people. in san francisco, charles clifford kron 4 news.

(grant) the two men charged in the ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland appeared in court this morning - two weeks after they were charged. today they were scheduled to enter a plea...but did not.(vicki) as kron four's terisa estacio reports, their attorneys say both men are struggling being behind bars as the serious criminal case proceeds against them. (estacio) here in oakland, derick almena and max harris appeared next to each other in court - they were scheduled to enter a plea - but, that changed, instead, they did not speak up, and did not enter a plea but their attornies had a lot to say on their behalf. curtis briggs, max harris' attorney. "my client has never been in custody, he is struggling." curtis briggs is max harris' attorney. he says harris who was arrested two weeks ago in los angeles and now faces 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter has been having a tough time in jail. he says harris has been wrongfully accused in this case that the night of the ghostship fire he

was actually trying to save people. he says conditions in the jail are challenging for him. curtis. "he is a vegetarian. he is only eating about 20 percent of his food. almena - the master tenent is also finding it hard to cope - says his attorney. he has been dealing with depression. tony serra, derick almena's attorney. isaac, are you ready? yeah. chase. so you can. we are following some breaking news... a navy destroyer -- the u-s-s fitzgerald -- is taking on water after colliding with a philippine-flagged merchant ship. this is happening off the coast of japan. the japan coast guard has confirmed that seven crew members the navy destroyer are missing. there were approximately 330 sailors on board. a military official said the ship can not move, but is in no danger of sinking. the japanese coast guard is helping conduct a medevac. officials are assessing damage to the ship. ago, bay area hillsides have turned brown and all that grass is fuel for fire.(grant) kron four's rob fladeboe is live in morgan hill where calfire is gearing up for a busy weekend and then some. rob? (rob live) it's only mid june and already there have been about 300 more fires across california than there were this time a year ago and those fires have consumed more than twice as many acres in that same time frame. it's hot, it's windy and there is a lot of fuel out there to feed those fires. this is the result of all that rain we got last winter. still green not that long ago as those rains persisted well into spring, it's as if the bay area turned brown overnight. calfire says the grass crop is taller this year and there is a lot more of it.

the hot, windy weather means it won't take much of a spark to ignite that grass. what often starts with a small fire touched off by a vehicle or power tool can quickly become a much larger blaze, often threatening homes and other property.christopher goodnight/calfire" as the humidity levels drop we can expect these fires to start quickly and spread rapidly and it will likely continue through the weekend. we expect the fuel moistures to keep falling into the more sustainable levels to support vegetation burning...."in other words, more fires. here's the proof. already this year calfire has responded to1,626 fires across the state. those fires have consumed more than 17,000 acres. that's roughly 250 more fires than this time a year ago but more than two times the number of acres have burned. thanks to the drought, there are also a lot more dead trees and brush along with all that grass. hoping for the best, calfire is prepared for the worst. chris goodnight/calfire"...we will bring in additional resources as needed, we will

enterance to yosemite national park will be closed at least through the weekend bcause of a rock slide.. the 4- thousand ton slide came crashing down on monday.... sending massive rock slabs onto el portal road .. it is creating quite the headache for park visitors and employees. you can see the slide is about the size of a two-story house.. park employees who take that route say their usual 30-minute commute has turned into two or three hours.. yosemite's eastern enterance is also still closed while crews clear out snow.. has found a police officer not guilty in the killing of a black man .(grant) officer jeronimo yanez shot and killed philando castile during a traffic stop last july. the shooting gained national attention when castile's girlfriend broadcasted the shooting on facebook live. during the trial... officer yanez testified he feared for his life because castile reached for his firearm, despite being instructed not to. yanez shot castile five times in the chest. today castile's family members voiced their anger with the jury's verdict.

yanez was also acquitted of two counts of intentional discharge of a firearm that endangers safety. after the verdict, the city of saint anthony, minnesota announced that officer yanez will no longer be on the force. now find you guilty on the indictment charging you with the involuntary manslaughter of the person conrad roy the third.( vicki) a stunning verdict in a closely watched trial:a massachusetts judge convicts a woman in the death of her boyfriend ... by pressuring him to commit suicide.michelle carter was 25 miles away from conrad roy when he died.(grant )the american civil liberties union calls the verdict an unconstitutional violation of free speech protectsions.steve aveson is here to show us how the case has taken us into new

(steve)the judge's ruling said in effect that "words can kill."...that michelle carter was responsible for the death of boyfriend conrad roy by urging him to kill himself through repeated texts and phone calls. "she sat there on the phone your honor and listened to him die, she listened to him cry that's what she told her friends ... she told her friend lexi she was having nightmares she could hear his cries."carter and roy met while vacationing with their families in florida. both were troubled teenagers histories of depression. although they lived just an hour's drive from each other in southeastern massachusetts ... they met in person only a handful of times.most of their contact was electronic.the prosecution's case rested on rested on more than a 1,000 facebook and text messages exchanged between two teenagers over two years. carter urged him repeatedly to

go ahead with plans to kill himself.on the day he poisoned himself in his truck, she texted him repeatedly.her attorney argued that the ultimate choice was conrad's. "he chose to get in that car, he chose to breath in those fumes."the two talked on the phone as the poison gas filled the cab.at one point conrad lost his nerve and got out , the judge said she could have called police, or his family.instead she told him to get back in... andthat is what convinced him of her guilt. "although we are very pleased with the verdict, in reality there are no winners here today. conrad, an 18- year-old boy, is dead and the young woman - a young woman is now convicted of causing his death. two families have been torn apart and will be affected by this for years to come. with that being said, we fervently hope today's guilty verdict will bring some level of justice to the friends and family of conrad roy." billion dollars. amazon says whole foods will continue to operate under that name as a separate unit of the company. experts say the deal shows amazon's interest in operating traditional brick-and-mortar stores. it also demonstrates the company's growing interest in groceries. amazon already has a grocery delivery service called "amazon fresh". (vicki) the t-s-a is testing new baggage scanners that may speed up the security line.(vicki) the new scanners create 3-d images of what is inside of your luggage. this virtual tour will allow passengers to not have to remove any objects such as liquids and laptops. the scanners are said to speed up security lines at airports. so far american airlines are using the scanners at logan airport in boston and sky harbor airport in phoenix. well, it's starting to appear that jimmy lam. .the shooter in this case . . . may have been a very troubled man who struggled with personal issues for a long time before wednesday's shooting at this ups facility. now, the associated press claims an sfpd official has told them that jimmy lam, may have felt disrespected by his colleagues. one of lam's co- workers also told the a-p that he had struggled over the past few years with depression and personal issues.lam was apparently convicted twice of driving on a suspended license. once in 2013 and again in 2014. he also had his license suspended in 2014 for negligently operating a vehicle.we've also learned that in 2010 lam was convicted in san francisco of driving under the influence and sentenced to three years' probation.his coworkers have also said that at some point he was involved a dispute with a girlfriend over visitation rights for their child. finlly, it appears that not long before that shooting, lam
