this morning on the kron 4 morning news... it's the first day of summer and the bay area is dealing with major heat. what the state is issuing to make sure you stay safe. (james) and with that heat, fires are starting across the state. we'll take you to the east bay and hear from people who are afraid of losing their homes. ( james ) summer officially begins today but the bay area is already in the midst of a heat wave. california is calling on people to conserve energy during the heat wave. a statewide "flex alert" has been issued, due to high demand of electricity. power officials are asking people to avoid using major appliances and set air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher. it's all an attempt to ease the strain on the power grid. officials expect usage to exceed 47- thousand megawatts... the record is around 50-thousand back in 20--06. ( james ) meanwhile, firefighters seem to have a handle on a fire burning in morga. it broke out on a

hillside behind campolindo high school, dangerously close to the high school football field... kron four's charles clifford has the latest. natsmonday afternoon, a fast moving wildfire broke out on this hillside in moraga. it quickly escalated to a four alarm fire mostly due to the fact the the hill is surrounded on all side by homes including the home ike brandel.at one point the fire was less than a mile from his back yard, with nothing but dry brush and grass between the flames and his fence. he wasn't home at the time.sot ike brandel says i was at starbucks having a cup of coffee when my daughter called me.ike raced home, navigating through around fire trucks and closed streets, and then set work doing the only thing he could think of.sot ike brandel says i'm gonna go in the back yard and start watering down the fence on the side where it might possibly come down the hill.fortunately, a gentle breeze was blowing the fire

away from ike's house and an aggressive attack by multiple fire agencies kept the flames at bay. by around 5 pm, the wildfire was mostly contained, much to the relief of ike and his neighbors.sot ike brandel says so far everything seems to be alright. just a lot of fire trucks. ( james ) in southern calfiornia, a fast-moving wildfire is burning near big bear. voluntary evacuation orders were issued for the area. more than 800-acres have burned since yesterday afternoon. no buildings are threatened, but there are several road closures in that area. rosa. kron four's j-r stone talked to be people who knew the dad. friends tell me that alvaro camara is the man that killed his two kids then hanged himself.he was always quick to smile, always talkative but lately he seemed like carrie was saying a little bit nervous and edgy.those with the sheriff's office found the three bodies here monday morning when they were doing a welfare check. camara was married but had been seperated for 6 months. he had the kids on father's day and was supposed to drop them back at their mother's home sunday night. that never happened. police believe he killed his 18 month old son and 6 year old daughter. neighbors told us he was aggravated sunday morning after someone in this complex had parked in someone elses spot. neighbors say

( james ) a former san francisco school district employee has been arrested on charges of sexual battery on a child. donovan harper was arrested at his home in novato. the alleged crime involves a child under 14 years old. police say they have been investigating harper since october of 20-16. they say harper worked at a number of campuses in the san francisco school district. ( james ) the oakland fire department has released a new report on the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. the report says the flames started

in the northwest area on the ground floor of the warehouse. but there is still no conclusive determination of what caused the fire that killed 36 people back in december. two people are facing criminal charges, the buildings master tenant derick almena and max harris. harris is the man who prosecutors say organized the party the night of the fire. people gathered outside the u-p-s san francisco customer center to pay tribute to three drivers who were killed by a co-worker. the interfaith prayer service last night

honored benson louie, mike lefiti and wayne chan. the three men were shot and killed last week by fellow driver jimmy lam. a motive for the shooting remains a mystery this morning. many of the victims co-workers were at the service and say they are still struggling to deal with what happened: ( james ) now union ( james ) now union officials say they want some answers. they want to know how the shooter got a weapon inside the facility. they don't know if anybody was operating the metal detectors at the facility or if they were even working correctly on the day of the ( james ) we now know the name of the man who was shot and killed in concord over the weekend. police have identified the victim as 41- year-old robert frazier. he was killed saturday morning in front of nica lounge on salvio street. police do

have a suspect in custody. ( james ) a man is charged with murder after police say he assaulted and killed a muslim teen near a mosque in virginia. nabra hassanen was going to the mosque with her friends when she was assaulted. police say the group of friends got into a dispute with a driver. police say that is when the driver, 22-year-old darwin torres, attacked her with a baseball bat, took her in his car, and threw her body in a nearby pond. police are describing this as a road rage incident, and say there is no evidence to suggest it was a hate crime. ( james ) europe shaken by a pair of terror attacks... one directed against muslims in london, the other against security forces in paris. in france, a driver in a car filled with gas canisters tried to ram a police van on the champs- elysees. the driver was killed. no bystanders nor police were hurt. ( james @ landing ) in britain, a man drove a van

into a crowd of worshippers leaving a mosque. he reportedly said he wanted to kill all muslims. british police have identified the suspect as 47-year-old darren osborne. the father of four is being held on suspicion of murder and terrorism. he is accused of plowing into a crowd of muslims after late night services at a london mosque. kron four's pam moore has the story. natit happened just after midnight on monday morning in the largely muslim neighborhood of finsley park in north londoni see a white van. i see people screaming, shouting, extremely devastated. "a big van crushing the people in the mosque."i was shocked. we were screaming. the van stopped and angry members of the crowd tried to attack the driver.he was a big muscley guy. he was really shouting and aggressive. he was spitting on us"he was shouting 'i did my bit' and 'you deserve it' and stuff like this. thanks for our imam...who went quickly and grabbed the guy. the people there was trying to hit and kick the guy, but he saved him, kept him safe until the police arrived."even after being loaded in a police van, he tried to provoke bystanders by blowing them kisses.

( james ) the american college student who just returned home after being detained in north korea for 17 months has died. otto warmbier (warm-beer) was in a coma when he was released by north korea. the 22-year old was sentenced to 15 years in prison -- after confessing he tried to steal a propaganda banner from a hotel. doctors say he returned to the u-s with severe brain damage, but it wasn't clear what caused it. his family released a statement blaming their son's death on the way has treated by the north koreans. ( james ) the supreme court has announced it will take up a wisconsin gerrymandering case, the most important case of its kind in a decade. it involves district lines in wisconsin that challengers say were drawn to help republicans. how the justices rule on this, could impact how district lines are drawn nationwide. wisconsin's republican

( james ) more money is on the way to victims of the coyote creek flood in san jose. san jose mayor sam liccardo announced that the passage of the state budget will provide more than five million dollars for services related to febraury's floods. thousands of people were forced to evacuate after days of rain - caused coyote creek to overflow back in february. several cars and homes were ruined in those floods. ( james ) many people across the bay area are thinking about ways to stay cool during the heatwave. kron four's alecia reid reports that fans, air conditioners and miniature pools are now flying off the shelves. with steaming hot temperatures, people have been doing their best to beat the heat. plastic wrappers are melting in cars, and folks are trying to avoid that in their homes.i had a crew come out and install an ac ceiling fans on high and the house is a cave this heat is actually bringing a lot of revenue to hardware stores. anything from fans, air conditioners, and miniature pools are flying off the shelves.it does the joband

( james ) prosecutors say a santa cruz surgeon has been molesting children for years. the neurosurgeon was in court yesterday to face new

sexual assault charges. doctor james kohut is accused of molesting several children, including a three-year-old boy. two of his nurses are also accused in the abuse of children. the newest allegation comes from a woman who says he abused her thirteen years ago in louisiana. prosecutors have added that to the charges against him. last week, the doctor pleaded not guilty to ten felony charges of molesting two boys and a girl under the age of 14. ( james ) happening today all eyes in the political world are on the state of georgia. that is where a special election is being held to determine the next congressman from that state. republican karen handel is taking on democrat jon ossoff. it is the most expensive house race in u-s history. the district that is up for grabs has been a g-o-p strong hold for decades but the polls show a tight race. and many believe that this election could be an indicator of what to expect in the national mid-term elections next november. ( james ) white house press secretary sean spicer may soon step down from his

their information leaked. that could include names, dates of births, home addresses, and more. kron four's tech reporter gabe slate tells us what you should do if your information was breached. "the way this happened was a third party that was being used by the republican party for analytics of data around voter information. and that company was using a cloud service by amazon and the system they were using they left it unprotected without any passwords which basically meant that anyone on the internet could access the information and get access to terabytes of data without any passwords or credentials" varun badwar with redlock security in menlo park specializes in online cloud security he showed me how the voter information was left unsecured on the cloud server according the researchers with "up guard" "if you select

this box "everyone" than anyone can access it" he says these shared cloud servers are convienent because a lot of different people can have access to the data.. but because this precious data is managed by so many people it's easy to make security mistakes "a lot of the traditional security tools companies have invested in don't work with cloud servers like amazon so hopefully as an industry we will wake up and start security more seriously.. with just a little more care this could have been avoidable " the rnc has not made a comment on this yet. the data company behind this leak, deep root, said in a statement they take full responsibility, the security hole has been fixed, and it is expected that this was discovered before any cyber criminals took advantage of the unsecured cloud server.

( james ) this morning we are learning more about the death of actress carrie fisher. a new autopsy report reveals traces of cocaine, heroin and ecstasy were found in her system. doctors say fisher took cocaine three days before she got sick in december. investigators could not determine what impact the drugs in her system

don't lose power during this heat wave. more than 100-thousand customers have lost power at some point over the last few days. yesterday power was knocked out at the stoneridge mall in pleasanton. p-g-and-e says that the heat is to blame for the outages. they say that high demand for air conditioning can overload electric lines... transformers and other equipment. p-g-and-e says it is using meteoroligists to pinpoint which locations may be most vulnerable in advance. they say that helps their crews respond quicker when there is a power outage. ( james ) and now state officials are calling on people to conserve energy during the heat wave. a statewide "flex alert" has been issued, due to high demand of electricity. power officials are asking people to avoid using major appliances between 2 p-m and 9 p-m and set air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher. it's all an attempt to ease the strain on the power grids.

( mark ) summer officially begins today and the heat wave is leading to increased fire danger all across the state. in moraga... a fire broke out on the hillside behind campolindo high school -- dangerously close to the high school football field. people living near the area were worried about the fire reaching their homes. at one point the fire was less than a mile away from one man's house. he wasn't home at the time it started. fortunately the wind was blowing the fire away from his home. multiple fire agencies were able to contain the fire. firefighters are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire. ( mark ) in southern calfiornia... a fast-moving wildfire is burning near big bear. voluntary evacuation orders were issued for the area. more than 800-acres have burned since yesterday afternoon. as of right now, no homes are threatened. ( lydia ) police in santa rosa found the bodies of a 40- year old father, his 6-year old daughter and 18-month old son on monday morning.(take vo) the bodies were found inside the fathers home on the 700 block of slater street.before the murder-suicide, sonoma county sheriff's deputies were investigating a child custody violation, involving a dispute between a husband and wife about their two children. during the investigation, authorities tried to contact the father and check on the children. sheriff's deputies eventually home and found the three dead.we talked to neighbors about what happened.

( james ) a former san francisco school district employee has been arrested on charges of sexual battery on a child. donovan harper was arrested at his home in novato. the alleged crime involves a child under 14

years old. police say they have been investigating harper since october of 20-16. they say harper worked at a number of campuses in the san francisco school district. ( james ) more than 100 people gathered outside the u-p-s san francisco customer center to pay tribute to three drivers who were killed by a co-worker. the interfaith prayer service last night honored benson louie, mike lefiti and wayne chan. the three men were shot and killed last week by fellow driver jimmy lam. a motive for the shooting remains a mystery this morning. many of the victims co-workers were at the service and say they are still struggling to deal with what happened: ( james ) now union officials say they want some answers. they want to know how the shooter got a weapon inside the facility. they don't

( mark ) this morning we are learning new details about what led up to a deadly officer involved shooting in antioch. police shot and killed 37-year-old nathan banks friday night near manzanita way. officers say they tried to talk to banks and a woman who were in a car. that's when police noticed that banks had a gun and the told him to stay in the car. he got out with the gun and took off running. an officer chased him and there was some sort of confrontation. that's when the officer started shooting. the contra cost county district attorney's office is investigating. ( mark ) happening now... the most expensive house race in american history comes to a head in suburban atlanta. a special election is being held today to decide who will represent georgia's 6th congressional district in the house of representatives. republicans have held the seat since 1979... but this year, democrat jon ossoff is leading the polls over republican karen handel. 52 million dollars has been spent on this

to sf. richmond bridge drive less than 20 min from the toll to 101 ( james ) san francisco state university is facing a lawsuit this morning... accusing administrators of fostering an anti-semitic environment. a group of jewish students filed the lawsuit yesterday that says school officials encouraged hostility towards jews. several incidents are cited, including protestors interrupting a speech by the mayor of jerusalem. the lawsuit also claims the university has

repeatedly denied jewish student groups equal access to campus events. an attorney for the school says they are not aware of the lawsuit or its allegations. officials have been working closely with the jewish community to address their concerns. ( mark ) more money is on the way to victims of the coyote creek flood in san jose. san jose mayor sam liccardo announced that the passage of the state budget will provide more than five million dollars for services related to febraury's floods. thousands of people were forced to evacuate after days of rain - caused coyote creek to overflow back in february. several cars and homes were ruined in those floods. ( mark ) the american college student who just returned home after being detained in north korea for 17 months has died. otto warmbier (warm-beer) was in a coma when he was released by north korea. the 22-year old was sentenced to 15 years in prison -- after confessing he tried to steal a propaganda banner from a hotel. doctors say he returned to the u-s with severe brain damage, but it wasn't clear what caused it. his family released a statement blaming

( james ) the supreme court has announced it will take up a wisconsin gerrymandering case, the most important case of its kind in a decade. it involves district lines in wisconsin that challengers say were drawn to help republicans. how the justices rule on this, could impact how district lines are drawn nationwide. wisconsin's republican governor says he's confident the republican-drawn maps will survive the high court's review. ( james ) it's being called the largest leak of voter information in history. security researchers say they found a flaw with a cloud server storing personal information of around two hundred million registered voters. the information included names, addresses, phone numbers and voter registration details on voters from both political parties. researchers say the server was storing data for a contractor hired by the republican national committee who uses the information for advertising. cyber security experts are warning that this type of data breach could become more frequent.

( mark ) prosecutors say a santa cruz surgeon has been molesting children for years. the neurosurgeon was in court yesterday to face new sexual assault charges. doctor james kohut is accused of molesting several children, including a three-year-old boy. two of his nurses are also accused in the abuse of children. the newest allegation comes from a woman who says he abused her thirteen years ago in louisiana. prosecutors have added that to the charges against him. last week, the doctor pleaded not guilty to ten felony charges of molesting two boys and a girl under the age of 14. ( mark ) summer officially begins today and the heat wave is leading to increased fire danger all across the state. in moraga... a fire broke out on the hillside behind campolindo high school -- dangerously close to the high school football field. people living near the area were worried about the fire reaching their homes. at one point the fire was less than a mile away from one man's house. he wasn't home at the time it started. fortunately the wind was blowing the fire away from his home. multiple fire agencies were able to contain the fire. firefighters are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire. ( mark ) in southern calfiornia... a fast-moving wildfire is burning near big bear. voluntary evacuation orders were issued for the area. more than 800-acres have burned since yesterday afternoon. as of right now, no homes are threatened. ( lydia )police in santa rosa found the bodies of a 40-year old father, his 6-year old daughter and 18-month old son on monday morning.(take vo)the bodies were found inside the fathers home on the 700 block of slater street.before the murder-suicide, sonoma county sheriff's deputies were investigating a child custody violation, involving a dispute between a husband and wife about their two children. during the investigation, authorities tried to contact the father and check on the children. sheriff's deputies eventually entered the home and found the three dead.we talked to neighbors about what happened.(sot) ( lydia )the father, 40, hung

( mark ) a former san francisco school district employee has been arrested on charges of sexual battery on a child. donovan harper was arrested at his home in novato. the alleged crime involves a child under 14 years old. police say they have been investigating harper since october of 20-16. they say harper worked at a number of campuses in the san francisco school district. ( james ) more than 100 people gathered outside the

u-p-s san francisco customer center to pay tribute to three drivers who were killed by a co-worker. the interfaith prayer service last night honored benson louie, mike lefiti and wayne chan. the three men were shot and killed last week by fellow driver jimmy lam. a motive for the shooting remains a mystery this morning. many of the victims co-workers were at the service and say they are still struggling to deal with what happened: ( james ) now union officials say they want some answers. they want to know how the shooter got a weapon inside the facility. they don't know if anybody was operating the metal detectors at the facility or if they were even working correctly on the day of the shooting. ( mark ) the american college student who just returned home after being detained in north korea for 17 months has died. otto warmbier (warm-beer) was in a coma when he was released by north korea. the 22-year old was sentenced to 15 years in prison -- after confessing he tried to steal a propaganda banner from a hotel. doctors say he returned to the u-s with severe brain damage, but it wasn't clear what caused it. his family released a statement blaming their son's death on the way has treated by the north koreans. president trump expressed his condolences yesterday.

( mark ) happening today... san jose city council is voting on whether to enter into exclusive talks with google over their new office. the mountain view based company is looking to build a six-million-square foot office and retail development on the western edge of downtown. mayor sam liccardo said the site would bring up to 20- thousand jobs. critics of the plan say it could trigger displacement and gentrification downtown. if the google plan moves forward, development would not start for another three years. ( mark ) more money is on the way to victims of the coyote creek flood in san jose. san jose mayor sam liccardo announced that the passage of the state budget will provide more than five million dollars for services related to febraury's floods. thousands of people were forced to evacuate after days of rain and water releases from the anderson dam - caused coyote creek to overflow back in february. several cars and homes were ruined in those floods. ( james ) a man is charged with murder after police say he assaulted and killed a muslim teen near a mosque in virginia. nabra hassanen was going to the mosque with her friends when she was assaulted. police say the group of friends got into a dispute with a driver. officers say that is when the driver, 22-year-old darwin torres, attacked her with a baseball bat, took her in his car, and threw her body in a nearby pond. police are describing this as a road rage incident, and say there is no evidence to suggest it was a hate crime. ( mark ) san francisco state university is facing a lawsuit this morning... accusing administrators of fostering an anti-semitic environment. a group of jewish students filed the lawsuit yesterday that says school officials encouraged hostility towards jews. several incidents are cited, including protestors interrupting a speech by the mayor of jerusalem. the lawsuit also claims the university has repeatedly denied jewish student groups equal access to campus events. an attorney for the school says

hands of an animal shelter after her owner left her in a hot car in texas.( james ) the eight-month old puppy was trapped in the nearly 100- degree heat with the windows rolled up and the car turned off over the weekend. a good samaritan then alerted police. the sun roof was cracked open just enough for police to use a crow bar and hit the unlock button and open the door.( mark ) the owner says he was shopping inside walmart for about 30 minutes. he was later arrested for animal cruelty. at 100 degrees... it only takes 15 minutes for a car to reach 140 degrees. ( mark ) happening now... it's so hot in phoenix, arizona that it is prompting flight cancellations because some airplanes can't take off in the extreme heat. ( james ) phoenix is expected to hit a high of 120 degrees today. extreme heat affects a plane's ability to take off. hot air is less dense than cold air, and the hotter the temperature, the more speed a plane needs to lift off. american airlines has already canceled 43 flights today

( mark ) prosecutors say a santa cruz surgeon has been molesting children for years. the neurosurgeon was in court yesterday to face new sexual assault charges. doctor james kohut is accused of molesting several children, including a three-year-old boy. two of his nurses are also accused in the abuse of children. the newest allegation comes from a woman who says he abused her thirteen years ago in louisiana. prosecutors have added that to the charges against him. last week, the doctor pleaded not guilty to ten felony charges of molesting two boys and a girl under the age of 14. ( james ) we now know the name of the man who was shot and killed in concord over the weekend. police have identified the victim as 41- year-old robert frazier. he was killed saturday morning in front of nica lounge on salvio street. police do have a suspect in custody. morning...a c-h-p officer rescues a baby deer stuck in a freeway drain. this happened in truckee on interstate 80. the officer spotted the fawn sticking its head out of the rushing water. the officer was able to free the deer's leg from a drainage ditch and waited for the mother to show up. when she never did he wrapped the fawn in a jacket and took it to a vet. the baby deer was treated for hypothermia and she is now recovering at an animal sanctuary in lake tahoe.
