( james ) our heat wave coverage continues at the alameda county fair where it was downright hot. as kron 4's alecia reid shows us, it was so hot some rides had to shut down for part of the day. the high today was about 104 here in pleasanton, but that didn't stop folks from coming to the fair and walking around. although i must say it was noticably slow when it came to rides.pkgthe sweltering heat kept a lot of people away from the county fair during the day. sweltering hot. it's very very hot out here today visitors did everything they could to stay cool in the steaming temperatures from finding any type of shade, to staying hydrated. it was quite

the taskwe thought we were gonna die it was so hot. we were in the buildings, we were so hotit was unbearable. we wanted to stay inside the stores, and it's not even like fun in thereit's been really fun, really cool. the water ride has been a lot of fun and also this thing.there was no need to worry about lines in the hot sun. and water rides were a big hit. it helped a lot and especially now that the sun is going downonce it started slipping out of the triple digits, more folks started showing upthis wind helps a lot and now we can go on more rides and not worry about dehydrationone thing that was prety noticable the first day of horse racing was canceled. that normally brings in an additional 7-10 thousand people per day but keeping the animals and jockeys health

investigators just releasing that information this morning. they also say that insulation and tiles that were recovered from the scene failed safety tests. police say all of the bodies have been removed from the building. and now authorities say they are considering filing manslaughter charges in connection to the fire. ( james ) a home invasion robbery in the east bay ended with the homeowner shooting and killing two burglars. and now neighbors tell kron 4 that surveillance video proves a third person was involved in the crime and is still on the loose. kron4's ella sogomonian has the details. sot: reggie nichols, neighbor//"i think he defended himself with what he had to do. it was either going to be him or them."a brentwood homeowner shot and killed two men wearing masks after birch street neighbors say the robbers burst into his garage demanding he open a safe. police say the victim acted in self defense and has not been charged. sot: reggie nichols, neighbor//"they forced him to open the safe and i guess they just wasn't watching him close enough because he said as soon as they did he just started

get ready to pay more to ride. the bart board voted and passed new fare increases starting in january next year, all fares will go up by nearly 3 percent. and there will be a 50-cent surcharge on paper tickets. the discount for youth riders ages 5 to twelve is dipping slightly. but there's a new fifty percent discount for riders 13 to 18. bart also passed a resolution declaring trains a safe space for everyone regardless of immigration status. they stopped short of calling it a sanctuary. and in a narrow decision the board repealed the "seat hog" ordinance which would have banned riders from taking up more than one seat. friends are mouring the loss of a 17 year old girl.she died after falling off along the coast near outer richmond. denise newman/battalion chief, san franscisco fire dept: we got a call around 620 this evening of a possible young female that had fallen off the cliff or had slipped and fallen down over the cliff near land's end right near the legion of honor so we responded and got as close as we could to see if we can locate the victim. it's very hot because there's a lot of terrain. beach patrol rushed the unconscious victim to china beach.officials say they were able to get her there in three minutes.but weren't able to resusciate her.firefighters say they get a lot of these calls this time of year because of tourists and because school is out.denise newman/battalion chief, san franscisco fire dept: either people don't stay on the path or they get too close to the edge and don't realize how dangerous it really is as we can see with this young victim. so we recommend that you stay on the path as much as you want to see the scenery they are there for a reason.

of the incident, which happened wednesday in front of the city's federal building. a group of people were protesting the republican health care bill and, at one point, laid down in the middle of the street. that's when the motorcyclist drove through the crowd. he then turned around and apparently tried to do it again... but was stopped by police. luckily, no one was hurt. ( james ) there is a new push by san francisco police to give officers tasers. but ánotá everyone thinks that is a good idea. kron4's dan kerman shows us why this issue is so controversial. ( james ) our top story... the heat. happening today... organizers expect things to be back to normal at the alameda county fair. several of the rides were shut down during the day yesterday because of the heat. it was over 100 degrees in pleasanton. the rides reopened in the evening after it cooled off. horse races are also expected to resume after they were canceled. the horses spent the day cooling off in the barns. the fair runs until july 9th.

closed door sessions... the senate republicans have unveiled their healthcare bill. senate leader mitch mcconnell is pushing for a speedy vote, but republicans can only lose two votes and still be able to pass the bill. the bill would cut and redesign the medicaid program for low-income and disabled people. it would also erase taxes on higher earners and the medical industry that helped obama's law expand coverage by roughly 20 million americans. right now, rand paul, ted cruz, mike lee, and ron johnson say they can't support the bill in its current form... but they are open to negotiation. ( james ) the white house says they plan to play a role in the discussions. but there will be little time for negotiation because republican leaders want to vote on the bill by the fourth of july.

( james ) the remnants of tropical storm cindy is moving north after making landfall in the gulf coast. it is still bringing heavy rain and winds and even though it is weakening... and still caused a lot of damage, too. take a look at the damage done in alabama. three people were taken to the hospital with injuries after the storm hit that state. flooding is

still a concern for the next several days all across the south. some places received as much as 15 inches of rain between yesterday and this morning. ( mark ) some bart riders will soon pay more ... if they do not use a clipper card. starting in january of next year, bart will be charging a 50-cent surcharge for people who buy a paper ticket. there will also be a nearly three percent fare increase for everyone. that increase is based on inflation. and -- the youth discount is being lowered to fifty- percent -- which will extend to riders age five- to- 18. the bart board has also repealed the controversial bart "seat hog" ordinance. it would have prohibited riders from taking up more than one seat. the bart board of directors also passed a resolution making bart a "sanctuary" transit system... meaning that people cannot be detained for immigration-related related causes while on bart. ( james ) police cite a motorcyclist for reckless driving after he drove through a group of protestors in san

francisco. this is video of the incident, which happened wednesday in front of the city's federal building. a group of people were protesting the republican health care bill and, at one point, laid down in the middle of the street. that's when the motorcyclist drove through the crowd. he then turned around and apparently tried to do it again... but was stopped by police. luckily, no one was hurt. ( mark ) there is a new push by san francisco police to give officers tasers. but ánotá everyone thinks that is a good idea.( james ) kron4's dan kerman has the details. ( james ) and the scorching temperatures have been causing problems for bay area drivers. the heat wave has led many drivers to take their cars into auto repair workshops for several weeks now. one of the biggest demands from drivers is to have mechanics fix their air conditioning. and this means more business for bay area auto shop owners.

a warning for people in the north bay about a debt collection scam. the sonoma county district attorney's office says people have been receiving fake debt collection letters form the higher balance institute. the letters threaten legal action that includes filing liens against property and additional penalties if the recipient of the letter contacts police. a representative from the higher balance institute says the letters are fake and that this has been going on for about three weeks. ( james ) this weekend... if you are traveling through the north bay expect major traffic delays on highway 37 and 121. traffic is expected to be longer than usual because of the nascar race at the sonoma raceway. nascar's top drivers are in town this week for the toyota/save mart 350....happening this sunday. some of the drivers were in the city yesterday for a luncheon looking ahead to the event. among them-- reigning daytona 500 winner kurt busch.

north carolina... kansas... mississippi and tennessee are already on the list. the state attorney general has now added texas, alabama, south dakota and kentucky. this means the state will not pay for employees to travel those states. california's attorney general says those states have laws which discriminate against people who are l-g-b-t. ( james ) breaking overnight... the apartment fire in london that killed 79 people started in a freezer. investigators just releasing that information this morning. they also say that insulation and tiles that were recovered from the scene failed safety tests. police say all of the bodies have been removed from the building. and now authorities say they are considering filing manslaughter charges in connection to the fire. ( james ) house democratic leader nancy pelosi is now facing sharp criticism within her own party about whether she is capable of leading them. this comes after the democrats lost a special election in georgia. pelosi says she is confident in the support she has.

( james ) our top story... the heat. happening today... organizers at the alameda county fair expect things to be back to normal today. several of the rides were shut down during the day yesterday because of the heat. it was over 100 degrees in pleasanton. the rides reopened in the evening after it cooled off. horse races are also expected to resume after they were canceled. the horses spent the day cooling off in the barns. the fair runs until july 9th. ( mark ) and even though temperatures are cooling down a little... fires are still a

concern all around the bay area. all lanes of interstate 80 are back open in vallejo this morning after a car fire that spread to nearby brush. the fire burned close to a neighborhood. four homes had minor damage but nobody was injured. ( mark ) the hot weather is continuing to put a strain on p-g-and-e. the utility company says there has been near record breaking electricity usage in california... with people turning on their air conditioner to stay cool. all this week we have seen the high temperatures causing power outages all over the bay area. the utility is offering tips to ease the strain on power grids and save you money at the same time. first... set your thermostat at 78 degrees when your home and 85 degrees when you are away. p-g-and-e says that setting your thermostat 5 degrees higher can save you 10 percent on cooling costs. if you turn on your ceiling fan... you can raise your thermostat four degrees without sacrificing comfort. shut your windows and shades to keep cool air in the house. and avoid using an electric oven... instead they suggest using the stove or grilling outside on hot days.

program for low-income and disabled people. it would also erase taxes on higher earners and the medical industry that helped obama's law expand coverage by roughly 20 million americans. right now, rand paul, ted cruz, mike lee, and ron johnson say they can't support the bill in its current form... but they are open to negotiation. ( james ) the white house says they plan to play a role in the discussions. but there will be little time for negotiation because republican leaders want to vote on the bill by the fourth of july. ( james ) former president barack obama is speaking out against the senate republican health care bill. he released a statement on facebook saying the senate measure is -- quote -- "not a health care bill" he

described it instead as a transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class to the rich. he is warning of higher premiums and deductibles and lost coverage for millions. ( mark ) police cite a motorcyclist for reckless driving after he drove through a group of protestors in san francisco. this is video of the incident, which happened wednesday in front of the city's federal building. a group of people were protesting the republican health care bill and, at one point, laid down in the middle of the street. that's when the motorcyclist drove through the crowd. he then turned around and apparently tried to do it again... but was stopped by police. luckily, no one was hurt. ( mark ) part of a clip on "britax child safety's" infant car seats can break and cause a choking hazard. the company is recalling over 207- thousand of its car seats. britax says parts were found in the mouths of three children, but no choking injuries were reported. the company traced the problem to people putting pressure on the clips, which helps to properly position the harness starps. for more information on which specific models are being recalled, head to our website at kron four dot com. ( james ) a woman is suing uber after she says she was sexually assaulted by a driver in hollywood. erica holland says the assault happened after requesting a ride to work earlier this month. she says the driver attacked her after she sat down in the passenger's seat.

don't think that's too much to ask.">( james ) uber says it has removed the accused driver as the case is being reviewed. in april, an uber driver was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a passenger in santa ana. and last month, a 41-year-old uber driver was arrested for sexually assaulting a u-c riverside student. ( mark ) north korea denies it cruelly treated or tortured american detainnee otto warmbier. he died just days after being released in a coma. this is the first time north korea has responded to his death. this is video of warmbier being laid to rest yesterday. north korea says they released him last week for humanitarian reasons. they accused warmbier of stealing a poster from a hotel and was serving a sentence of hard labor. north korea's official news agency says the country dealt with warmbier according to domestic law and international standards. warbier's family has blamed the country for his condition. ( james ) a 17-year-old boy was accidently shot and killed by police after a dog attacked a deputy in palmdale.

police say armando garcia was likely killed by a bullet that ricocheted. police were responding to reports of a large party when a dog attacked and bit one of the officers in the leg. garcia then tried to stop the dog, but the dog charged at deputies and that's when two officers opened fire. ( james ) police are calling the shooting an extremely unfortunate incident. the deputy who was bitten was also hit by bullet fragments. ( mark ) the san francisco police department is pushing for its officers to have tasers. the department is suggesting two types of tasers to the police commission, so officers can have another less lethal option. the u-s department of justice recommended the city should strongly consider using them. but opponents say using tasers can be lethal.

for people who buy a paper ticket. there will also be a nearly three percent fare increase for everyone. that increase is based on inflation. and -- the youth discount is being lowered to fifty- percent -- which will extend to riders age five- to- 18. the bart board has also repealed the controversial bart "seat hog" ordinance. it would have prohibited riders from taking up more than one seat. the bart board of directors also passed a resolution making bart a "sanctuary" transit system... meaning that people cannot be detained for immigration-related causes while on bart. hitting california is being blamed for at least six deaths. two of those deaths happened in santa clara... three in sacramento and now a father in bakersfield. that man died after running a race in 109- degree heat on tuesday. benjamin greene was a well known criminal defense attorney in the area. witnesses say there was no medical staff at the race despite the hot temperatures. ( james ) and the scorching temperatures have been causing problems for bay area drivers. the heat wave has led many drivers to take their cars into auto repair workshops for several weeks now. one of the biggest demands from drivers is to have mechanics fix their air conditioning. and this means more business for bay area auto shop owners. appearance. gary coslovich is charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. coslovich was stopped by police on interstate 80 on saturday morning. when the officer approached his car... police say he jumped out and started punching and kicking the officer. several good samaritans came to her rescue. coslovich is being held on one million dollars bail. ( james ) california is expanding its own travel ban. north carolina... kansas... mississippi and tennessee are already on the list. the state attorney general has now added texas, alabama, south dakota and kentucky. this means the state will not pay for employees to travel those states. california's attorney general says those states have laws which discriminate against people who are l-g-b-t. ( mark ) breaking overnight... the apartment fire in london that killed 79 people started in a freezer. investigators just releasing that information this morning. they also say that insulation and tiles that were recovered from the scene

end.( james ) a home invasion turns deadly after the homeowner shoots and kills two robbers in brentwood. neighbors tell kron four they have surveillance video that shows more people were involved in the crime and are still on the loose. neighbors say the robbers burst into his garage demanding he open a safe. that's when the homeowner shot and killed the two men.( mark ) also... happening this weekend it's the pride parade in san francisco. the celebration at civic center plaza is saturday, from noon to 6 p.m. and sunday, from 11 a.m. to6 p.m. the parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on sunday and runs along market street from beale to 8th streets. ( james ) the remnants of tropical storm cindy is moving north after making landfall in the gulf coast. it is still bringing heavy rain and winds and even though it is weakening... and still caused a lot of damage, too. take a look at the damage done in alabama. three people were taken to the hospital with injuries after the storm hit that state. flooding is still a concern for the next several days all across the south. some places received as much as 15 inches of rain between yesterday and this morning.
