(vicki) a medical marijuana dispensary proposed for san francisco's sunset neighborhood - the subject of a noisy protest in front of city hall today."no marijuana, no marijuana" the group chanted and carried signs against cannabis as they marched. the demonstrators say they think a pot dispensary is a bad fit for the area, raising concerns about the smell of marijuana smoke and an increase in crime in the area. they say because there is a day care center and a pre school not far away the city should deny the permit. (susanna chia/sunset district resident)i'm just really worried about the impact the youth. because they say oh it's legalized so it must be right it must be ok and also they're trying to make cookies and candies. yeah a lot of the merchants on noriega are not supportive of it so respect the neighborhood. proposed dispensary says they will not allow the consumption of pot in or around the shop and they've never had a single police incident at their other facility in the castro. they say there is support for marijuana in the neighborhood, pointing to polling data that shows the majority of sunset district residents voted in favor of the recent legislation legalizing the recreational use of pot. (steve) happening now in the north bay... firefighters working to get the upper hand on a grass fire in marin county. the "pine fire" is burning in kent lake... about two miles southwest of woodacre . the fire started near the junction of the pine mountain fire road and the azalea hill trail off of fairfax-bolinas road on marin municipal water district land. that's where kron 4's charles clifford is right now with the latest on the fire fighting effort. charles?

(vicki) and there are several other major wildfires we are keeping an eye on tonight... tens of thousands of acres have been scorched in a number of states including california... and the fires are likely to continue throughout the summer. a car crash caused this fire... known as the manzanita wildfire - which is burning in los angeles. we first told you about it yesterday at kron four news at 5... it has burned nearly 6-thousand acres- and is 20% contained. people living in the area have been warned about the possibility of evacuating. another wildfire is burning near san luis obispo that has forced two-hundred people to evacuate. in utah...the 'brian fire' has also forced evacuations and scorched 46-thousand acres. and mother nature isn't helping the crews. nearly 15-hundred

structures are still threatened in utah. arizona is also dealing with several fires. these fires are not expected to stop anytime soon with temperatures expected to reach triple digits. (steve) a swarm of - small to moderate earthquakes - near truckee over the last 24 hours... have caused no major damage - but did raise the stress level for many. kron 4's dan kerman has been talking to seismologists about the quakes.. and joins us live from u.s.g.s in menlo park with more. dan? these orange dots north of truckee each reflect an earthquake that has taken place in the last 24 hours. in fact there have been more than 3-dozen temblors, the largest of which registered 3.9 sot jack boatwright/usgs seismologisti presume we are

abuse charges have been filed against a boarding school clinical director in sonoma county. 39-year-old kevin thorpe is now charged with 15 counts of sex abuse of a child. officials say thorpe molested 2 young boys several times between 2006 and 20-11. thorpe worked at the hanna boys center in sonoma...where police believe some of the crimes took place. thorpe was taken into

custody this morning. his bail was set at 1.5 million dollars. thorpe has not entered a plea, his next court date is on july 11th. (steve) a new study shows a serious racial disparity in san francisco in how people of color are charged early on in criminal cases when compared to white people.(vicki) kron four's philippe djegal reports the new findings are spurring the launch of a new unit in the san francisco public defender's office to tackle booking bias'. (philippe) 65-year-old leslie elliott was recently held in custody for 115 days, on 300-thousand dollars bail... and, faced up to 27 years behind bars, after her attorney, deputy san francisco public defender elizabeth camacho, says elliott was unfairly charged with mayhem, battery causing serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon.elizabeth camacho/deputy public defender- "the weapon was a cup of coffee. an injury that wasn't permament." elliott

says her coffee spilled on her arm and a white woman's forearm on sixth street during an argument... the woman later called police on elliott, claiming she threw the coffee at her. san francisco public defender jeff adachi says elliott was overcharged.jeff adachi/public defender- "the disparity in charging that occurs by the police officer at the booking stages, carries throughout the entire system and it results in people of color, particularly african americans, being charged with more serious charges early on and more charges." elliott was eventually acquitted of all but one misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. still, the case took a toll on her and her perception of police.leslie elliott/defenda nt- "fear and anxiety." but adachi says this happens more often than you think. a study by the quattrone center for fair administration of justice concludes people of color in san francisco... receive more serious charges at the initial booking stage,

compared to white people. adachi says a way to curb the disparity is by having the public defender's office get involved earlier in the process. typically, the public defender's office doesn't jump into a case until assigned at arraignment. but now, the mayor's office and board of supervisors will fund a new pre-trial release unit.jeff adachi/public defender- "and, we will begin providing representation to clients at a much earlier stage." adachi says the pre-trial release unit will launch on october first... it'll be made up of two deputy public defenders... and, one investigator.jeff adachi/public defender- "if you ask the court or you ask the police department, they would ademately deny, um, that racism is a factor, in these decisions, however, the results of this study i think are, or, make that undeniable." city funding for the first year of the pretrial release unit is about 335- thousand dollars. in san francisco, philippe djegal, kron four news. a confrontation between church and state looms in the city of san jose, which, like most large cities, is dealing with chronic homelessness.(steve) kron four's rob fladeboe is live for us now with details on the coming crackdown on efforts to feed the homeless at a popular downtown park. rob? (rob live) i'm here at st james park. homeless people come here because they can often find a hot meal provided by church groups. but soon, the city will try to put a stop to that as part of a plan it says will be better for the homeless and make the park more accessible to everyone. sbeginning in early august, san jose police, which can often be seen patrolling st. james park, will begin enforcing an ordinance that bans the illegal distribution

of food, much of which is provided by church groups, like the one led by long time homeless advocate pastor scott wagers.pastor scott wagers/cham ministries"...this ordinance has been on the books for years, but it hasn't been enforced, so it shows that the city is upping the ante but if they don't offer an alternative that will appease the churches, there is going to be a battle bedtween church and state...."st james park is a regular stop for wagers' mercy mobile, which delivers food and clothing to homeless camps around town. he says the crackdown further demonizes the homeless and makes him out to be a criminal. pastor scott wagers".....what the mercy mobile does is follow the homeless, not vice versa, that logic is faulty, people keep telling me, you keep feeding them and they keep coming, no they are coming to me, they're already here..."amid complaints from other park users and neighbors about food waste and the lack of proper sanitation, the crackdown will be preceded by visits from police, who will direct the park's homeless visitors to alternatives food

have fastrak passes - however - will still get a discount, paying $6.75 per crossing. this is the fourth year in a row - golden gate bridge officials have raised the toll price. it will tack on another 25-cents - next year. the increase is to help pay for maintenance on the bridge as well as the cost of labor. ( steve )the supreme court's decision to allow part of president trump's travel ban to move forward is likely to have only a small impact on refugees.officials say refugees who have been vetted, approved for a move to the u.s., and scheduled to fly to the u.s. before july 6 will be allowed in.the u.s. is expected to accept about 50 thousand refugees during the budget year that ends in september. since october just under 49 thousand refugees have been allowed to move to the united states.the state department says after the refugee cap is reached, new people hoping to come to the u.s. may be required to show a relationship with someone or some entity in the united states. (vicki) some east bay residents are furious, some one is breaking into their mail boxes and stealing their personal items. and many of the thefts have been caught on camera. boxes - wide open - and empty - every piece of mail, gone, stolen. this is all happening at the camden housing complex in hayward, and residents are furious that they are getting ripped off.peggy. "we had a neighbor take video and she can hear the thieves say what master key is it.peggy reached out to kron four about what is happening near her home.peggy. there is a lot of fear that there could be identity theft. peggy says neighbors have sent videos to the home owners association, the police and the us and the postal service. peggy. there is a lot of finger pointing.jeff fitch, usps inspector. if they are stealing mail, it is a federal crime, punishable by 5 years and 250,000 fine.jeff fitch with the us postal service says they are aware of the situation and have inspectors on the case.fitch. we have seen an increase in mail theft in hayward, union city and statewide.tasha desota, hayward pd "we have had some arrests. hayward police officer tasha desota says they understand the publics frustration - and encourage residents to keep sending videos to them. often times, they know the suspects and can make an arrest. postal

(vicki) a big story we're tracking. a san jose swim coach is arrested for sending inappropriate texts messages to members on the team. tonight police are urging for more victims to come forward. three victims have been identified . initially those text messages were about swimming but police say later timothy nguyen asked girls and boys on the team for nude photos and sexual favors. nguyen even reportedly attempted to pursue a dating relationship with one of the victims. (sot) " i just feel bad for the kids because now where do they go with that? are they going to be able to trust and be successful for another coach? because he's broken that trust." the 25-year-old suspect... is a former assistant coach at "quicksilver swim team" in san jose. he is charged with annoying or molesting a child under 18. (vicki) new cyber attacks are causing problems around the world... a ransomware attack began with problems surfacing in europe....but has also been targeting the u.s... catherine heenan is here with the latest.. (catherine) at least 80 companies around the world have been affected today - by another huge cyber attack. problems were surfacing first in ukraine - which is a big target for russian hackers.. but there are plenty of problems in the u.s....a couple of examples - the new jersey based 'merck' - which is the second biggest drug companyin the world. and late today - a pennsylvania health care system was hit. some surgeries even had to be rescheduled. security experts say today's cyberattack shares something in common with last month's 'wanna cry' ransomware attack.... both

our pets are becoming more obese. that's according to a new report from banfield pet hospital. researchers looked at health habits of nearly 3 million dogs and 500-thousand cats that visit their facilities each year. they found that one in three pets were overweight or obese. veterinarians say they have found more than 20 diseases linked to pets being overweight. they say a healthy weight could prolong your pets life and delay chronic disease. it is also easier on your wallet. over a four year period... owners of overweight dogs spent 17-percent more in vet costs and owners of overweight cats spent 36-percent more. (steve) new video has been released of last month's horrific bus crash in detroit. amazingly, no one was killed in the incident.(steve) the bus crashed through a

brick wall before coming to a stop inside a food warehouse. an 18-year-old driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, caused the accident. officers say the driver failed to stop at an intersection. the 60-year-old bus driver was knocked unconscious by the crash.it's unclear if anyone is facing charges in connection to the crash. last novermber, there have been plans for new dispensaries all over the bay area. but one dispensary in san francisco's sunset neighborhood is drawing a lot of criticism. many of the residents say, they do not want it in their neighborhood. today they held a very loud protest in front of city hall. tonight we will tell you why they are so concerned... as well as have a response from the dispensary's owners. we will have that story .... and much more on kron 4 news at six. steve back to you. (vicki)google is in a lot of hot water in europe. . . the european union's competition watchdog. . . slapped a record 2-point-7 billion-dollar fine on the tech-giant.the european commission says google used its search results to unfairly steer customers to its own shopping platform.officials say that violates european antitrust rules.the company can appeal the decision. . .but has not said whether it will. posts a week as the social media giant cracks down on what it considers to be hate speech. the menlo park based company says it defines hate speech as attacks on people based on their racesexual orientation and other "protected characteristics". facebook currently has 45 hundred workers reviewing postand plans to hire three thousand more by 20-18. and just last week...mountain view based company google...said it plans to crack down on terrorist propaganda and other extremist videos on it's youtube site. racing right now to get a wildfire under control in marin county. these pictures coming from the frontlines and firefighters who are dealing with the flames... as they burn through rugged terrain. good evening i'm steve aveson.( pam ) and i'm pam moore. the fire is in the western part of the county. it is in a bit of a remote area... about two- miles to the southwest of kent lake which you see here on the map. it is being called the "pine fire." we know the fire started at about 10-30- this morning... and firefighters are throwing everything they have to try and stop it. kron 4's charles clifford joins us live from marin county... charles - are any homes in danger... and when do crews expect to have this fire under control?

police made a huge illegal fireworks bust ... after checking out a craiglist ad. the newark police department put up this picture of what officers seized. a 21-year-old man posted an advertisement for - "boom fireworks." an undercover officer made a deal and showed up at his house to buy the goods. police then returned with the alameda county sheriff's bomb squad... and confiscated about 350- pounds worth of explosives. the man was arrested and faces multiple charges. ( steve ) this home on the outskirts of castro vally has a menagerie of exotic birds. so many birds that neighbors have made numerous complaints about noise, odors and an infestation of flies each time they opened a door or a window. deputies

from the alameda county sheriffs office visited the home today after a previous visit with state fish and game officials. the homeowner had as many as five hundred exotic birds on the property. she is attempting to sell or otherwise relocate enough of them to become compliant with the fifty bird limit. (steve) a new study shows that in san francisco... people of color receive more serious charges at the booking stage of an arrest when compared to white people. the findings were released today by the quattrone center for the fair administration of justice. as a result, in october, the public defender's office is launching a new "pre-trial release unit." it will allow the public defender's office to represent people shortly after incarceration, rather than waiting until an arraignment. jeff adachi/public defender- "for example, if you're a person of color, instead of a theft charge, you may be charged with robbery. you may be charged with a much more serious charge, carrying with it a much higher potential sentence and essentially that sets the tone for the entire case throughout the system." the quattrone study also

(catherine) people were lining up at a san mateo post office before dawn today....the reason - a passport 'fair'..... meaning that between 5 and 9-am -- workers were focused 'only' on acceptingpassport applications... there's a couple of reasons for the backlog.some people are reportedly worried about travel-related policies under the trump administration...and figure this might be a last chance to get a passport. also -- there was a surge of applications back in 2007 since travel requirements changed that year. passports expire every 10 years -- so many of the same people now need to renew. it wasn't just here in san mateo....a lot of bay area post offices are holding these special events. in san mateo meantime - another passport fair is scheduled for friday.....
