burning across the rest of california. one of those fires was in burbank forcing mandatory evacuations throughout the day. the fire started around three- yesterday afternoon. firefighters were spraying water to prevent the flames from getting to homes. crews managed to contain the fire and are now keeping an eye out for hot spots. (will) firefighters are trying to get the upper hand on a wildfire that sparked tuesday in san bernardino county. so far more than 600- acres have burned and it is only 40- percent contained. hundreds of firefighters are battling the flames. authorities have lifted the mandatory evacuations in the area. but highway- 330 which is near the area of the fire is still closed.

(will) and the fire in marin county is now contained. we've learned it started when a tree limb fell on a power pole. the 'pine fire' started tuesday morning near kent lake. firefighters contained it at 38-acres. it never threatened any homes so no evacuations were necessary. (will) a group of asian parents in the east bay are raising questions about why their school district is asking for more detailed racial information about their kids. kron4's maureen kelly talked to two pleasanton mothers who say the practice is unfair and they want it changed. i feel uncomfortable very uncomfortable because i don't know why you're doing this what's the purpose? what makes lucy ye uneasy is the registration form she was asked to fill out before entering her 5 year old son kevin into his transitional kindergarten class at the beginning of the last school year.under the section entitled what's your child's ethnicity.parents can chose latino or not latino, white, african american.but when there not just one box for asian.instead there are more than a dozen different asian subgroups. korean japanese chinese vietnamese and all of those countries in asia. why should we do that?sylvia tian is another pleasanton mom who doesn't think it's fair that asian parents are being asked

to diferentiate themseleves in this way.why single out asians why single out all the countries? in asia? that's not correctboth moms feel that this data could end up hurting their kid's chances when they are applying for college.the pleasanton school district says they are just complying with legislation requiring the collection of this data that passed in 2011. a spokesperson with the state deparment of education says they use the data to track how kids from these subgroups are doing in school so they identify those who need more help.the law that required the state to collect this demographic data was co sponsored by several asian and pacific islander civil rights groups.education should be colorblind national origin blind it should be equal to all people the group that wants to see this practice end met with state assmemblywomab catherine baker of san ramon who says she will look into the issue and the possiblity of crafting new legislation. maureen kelly kron4 news

comes as the department of homeland security announced new changes today to airport security for flights arriving in the u.s. airports and airlines that fail to follow the new rules, could face fines. they could also be banned from operating direct flights to the u.s. airports will now conduct more thorough passenger interviews and have better vetting of future employees. homeland security secretary john kelly also said that travelers can also expect enhanced screening of electronic devices. the secretary did not rule out a complete lap top ban in the future. it will be up to the airlines to implement these new changes. ( mark ) police near sacramento are investigating the death of a toddler who was found inside of a car. a man and woman have been detained and are being questioned by detectives. officers found an s-u-v parked in the wrong direction on a busy street. police say the man and woman were just sitting in the car. officers checked and found out that the man had an outstanding warrant out of arkansas. and as officers began searching the car they found the body of a toddler covered with blankets in the backseat. police have not released much information on the toddler and are still trying to figure out the cause of death. ( darya ) firefighters are still trying to get a handle on a wildfire that is burning in san bernardino county. so far more than 600- acres have burned and it is only 40- percent contained. hundreds of firefighters are battling the flames since it

broke out on tuesday. authorities have lifted the mandatory evacuations in the area. but highways in the area are still closed this morning. and you can see there are several wildfires burning across the state. here is map showing where they are burning... most of them are in the central valley and southern california areas. ( darya ) in the south bay... a brush fire came dangerously close to a home in san jose. this is cell phone video of neighbors using hoses to help put out the fire yesterday. san jose fire and calfire were out fighting the fire as well. helicopters and planes were used to dump water and fire retardant. one of the homeowners says he was told fireworks may be to blame:

( mark ) the parents of an east bay teenager are suing the san ramon unified school district. the teen made a controversial video while running for student body president. the school district says that the video showed images of terrorists. the school district temporarily removed the student from his post as the student body president. he was eventually reinstated. the attorney for the parents released a statement to kron 4 saying the school acted unconstitutionally and punished the student for expressing his ideas. the school district has not commented on the lawsuit. ( mark ) all bart trains now have security cameras. the last one was installed yesterday. this is the view from the new surveillance camera. but bart admits that nobody is actually watching the bart cameras in real time. there are now four cameras on every train. bart riders say they appreciate the new cameras but some would prefer officers on each train. but the former bart police chief says that would not be cost effective.

( darya ) in the east bay... a wallet thief and credit card fraud suspect known for targeting bay area yoga studios has struck again. police have identified the suspect as christopher newton. they say this time he is suspected of stealing from people at the 'just-be-yoga' studio in walnut creek. police say they captured him on surveillance video. investigators say that newton is likely targeting small fitness studios because of the low security profile.

his arrest right now in walnut creek and other jurisdictions"> ( darya ) investigators say newton is known to take taxi-cabs to stores like target to rack up thousands of dollars in charges using stolen credit cards. ( mark ) san jose police are investigating what appears to be an attempted murder- suicide. officers responded to a shooting on creston lane by mclaughlin avenue yesterday morning. there they found a man dead in the middle of the street. shortly after they found a woman in a nearby home who was also shot and injured. police say the man called 9-1-1 after trying to kill the woman and then shot and killed himself. that's when the woman ran away into a nearby home. the woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. no word on her condition this morning. senior officials in the catholic church is accused of a string of sexual assault charges. cardinal george pell is facing multiple charges from several accusers in australia. pell has denied the charges. he says he plans to return to australia where he will defend the charges. during a government investigation in 2013... pell apologized for historical abuse in the church. he also acknowledged that cover-ups by others allowed pedophile priests to continue abusing children. pell currently serves as a top adviser to pope francis and is the vatican's top financial adviser. entitled what's your child's ethnicity.parents can chose latino or not latino, white, african american.but when there not just one box for asian.instead there are more than a dozen different asian subgroups. korean japanese chinese vietnamese and all of those countries in asia. why should we do that?sylvia tian is another pleasanton mom who doesn't think it's fair that asian parents are being asked to diferentiate themseleves in this way.why single out asians why single out all the countries? in asia? that's not correctboth moms feel that this data could end up hurting their kid's chances when they are applying for college.the pleasanton school district says they are just complying with legislation requiring the collection of this data that passed in 2011. a spokesperson with the state deparment of education says they use the data to track how kids from these subgroups are doing in school so they identify those who need more help.the law that required the state to collect this demographic data was co sponsored by several asian and

pacific islander civil rights groups.education should be colorblind national origin blind it should be equal to all people the group that wants to see this practice end met with state assmemblywomab catherine baker of san ramon who says she will look into the issue and the possiblity of crafting new legislation. maureen kelly kron4 news ( darya ) fremont police are re-opening an investigation into a woman who went missing more than 20 years ago. the decision to reopen the case comes after police found new evidence. 25-year-old sheri lynn muhleman went missing back in 1989. she was last seen packing up her things from her boyfriend's house in fremont. the couple also had a daughter together. police say based on current witness statements and physical evidence they believe muhleman was the victim of a homicide. but her body was never found. ( mark ) the city of san jose is stepping up efforts to get the homeless off the

streets and into permanent housing. "casa de novo" on the alameda has become a permanent home to about 50 families. it was converted from a motel by "abode services". they partnered with the city of san jose and santa clara county to create the housing. half of the facility is set aside for temporary and transitional housing. the other half is permanent residences where the tenants also have access to services like counseling and job training. ( mark ) since 2010, abode services has helped about 45-hundred homeless people off the streets. .( darya ) a former san francisco international airport screener has pleaded guilty to receiving a bribe as

a public official. joseph scott admits he allowed 50 pounds of cocaine to pass through his x-ray machine. police say scott accepted around 45-hundred dollars to allow the drugs to pass. the man who bribed scott was sentenced last week to four years in prison. he admitted to smuggling cocaine and marijuana through s-f-o security for several years by paying scott. a total of seven bay area airport screeners face similar charges. ( mark ) president trump is promising a surprise when it comes to the republican health care bill. but the president is not offering any details about what that surprise might be. so far nine republican senators have opposed the current bill. a usa today poll shows that only 12 percent of americans support the bill that was released by republican senators last week. according to the congressional budget office, about 22-million americans

would lose coverage under the plan. ( mark ) protesters shouted and held signs as president trump arrived at his first re-election fundraiser last night. donors for the event at the trump international hotel in washington paid 35-thousand dollars to attend. this fundraising event comes two and a half years sooner than either president obama or president george w. bush started re-election fundraising. ( darya ) a california doctor is in jail... charged with having sex with at least three minors. benjamin shettell has a practice in redding. the physician was arrested on 50 different charges. the allegations surfaced when an ex-boyfriend

sent a message to the doctor's coworkers saying that shettell was having sex with multiple underage boys. at least one of the minors he's accused of having sex with was a patient. he is being held on 3 million dollars bail. several fires are burning across california. one of those fires is in burbank where the fire came dangerously close to homes. it forced mandatory evacuations throughout the day yesterday. firefighters were spraying water to prevent the flames from getting to the homes. crews managed to contain the fire and are now keeping an eye out for hot spots. ( mark ) a minnesota woman is charged in the deadly shooting of her boyfriend after a youtube stunt gone wrong. 22-year-old pedro ruiz was shot and killed on monday. his pregnant 20- year-old girlfriend, monalisa perez, told police that ruiz wanted to make a stunt video. it involved her shooting a bullet into a book he was holding against his chest. she says she fired from about a foot away. the couple had a youtube page where tey played pranks on each other. the victim's aunt says multiple family members warned them not to do this stunt.

each other including something this stupid. monalisa would do anything he would ask. that's how much she loved him.">( mark ) perez tweeted this out just before the shooting. "me and pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most dangerous videos ever. his idea, not mine." she has since been released on seven- thousand dollars bail. the charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. ( darya ) one of the most senior officials in the catholic church is accused of a string of sexual assaults. cardinal george pell is facing multiple charges from several accusers in australia. pell has denied any wrongdoing. he says he plans to return to australia where he will defend the charges. during a government investigation in 2013... pell apologized for historical abuse in the church. he also acknowledged that cover-ups by others allowed

pedophile priests to continue abusing children. pell currently serves as a top adviser to pope francis and is the vatican's top financial adviser. ( mark ) the majority of hate crimes in the u-s were not reported to police over the last 12 years. that is according to a new federal report. it says that more than half of the 250-thousand hate crimes that happened between 2004 and 20-15 were not reported. most often, hate crimes weren't reported to police because they were handled some other way. others say they did not come forward because they did not feel it was important or that police would help. ( darya ) if you are looking to buy fireworks, you'll have to head to dublin. dublin is one of the few cities in the bay area where people can buy and light up fireworks on the fourth of july. thirteen fireworks booths are now open where non- profits are selling them to people who are over 18 years old. the city is letting

people set off fireworks in four designated parks from 10 a-m to 10 p-m on the fourth. ( darya ) extra officers and firefighters will be out in dublin on the fourth of july. you can set off fireworks at four parks: alamo creek, emerald glen and shannon parks as well as the dublin sports grounds. ( mark ) an m-l-b umpire saves a woman attempting suicide on a bridge in pittsburg. john tumpane saw a woman climbing over a railing above the river yesterday afternoon. he then approached her and locked both his arms around her back. tumpane says at times her feet were dangling off the bridge's edge, putting her full weight in his arms. tumpane says the woman urged him multiple times to let her go, telling him repeatedly that "you don't care about me." he says he kept responding assuring her that he does care and that he wouldn't let go. tumpane held onto her until police arrived and helped lift her back over the railing. the woman was later taken to the hospital. ( darya ) coming up... parents in one east bay school district say their kids are being treated unfairly because of their race.

( mark ) a 26-year-old pregnant woman in north carolina found a man breaking into her s-u-v at a walmart parking lot, so she went after him.( darya ) after being unable to catch him on foot, she jumps into her car and chased after him. here is what happened next....( darya ) the man only suffered minor injuries. he is now

facing multiple charges.( mark ) the woman who ran him down is also in trouble... she is facing an assault with a deadly weapon charge. ( darya ) a cheerleading squad had quite the scare when their charter bus collided with a semi-truck. it happened yesterday in riverside county along an interstate near indio. the bus driver says a big rig swerved into their lane to avoid hitting traffic. the truck quickly caught on fire. the driver of the truck was able to escape. the bus driver and three cheerleaders were taken to a local hospital. the cheerleaders were going back home to arizona after going to a cheerleading competition at u-c-l-a. registration form she was asked to fill out before entering her 5 year old son kevin into his transitional kindergarten class at the beginning of the last school year.under the section entitled what's your child's ethnicity.parents can chose latino or not latino, white, african american.but when there not just one box for asian.instead there are more than a dozen different asian subgroups. korean japanese chinese vietnamese and all of those countries in asia. why should we do that?sylvia tian is another pleasanton mom who doesn't think it's fair that asian parents are being asked to diferentiate themseleves in this way.why single out asians why single out all the countries? in asia? that's not correctboth moms feel that this data could end up hurting their kid's chances when they are applying for college.the pleasanton school district says they are just complying with legislation requiring the collection of this data that passed in 2011. a spokesperson with the state deparment of education says they use the data to track how kids from these subgroups are doing in school so they identify those who need more help.the law that required the

state to collect this demographic data was co sponsored by several asian and pacific islander civil rights groups.education should be colorblind national origin blind it should be equal to all people the group that wants to see this practice end met with state assmemblywomab catherine baker of san ramon who says she will look into the issue and the possiblity of crafting new legislation. maureen kelly kron4 news ( mark ) fremont police are re- opening an investigation into a woman who went missing more than 20 years ago. the decision to reopen the case comes after police found new evidence. 25-year-old sheri lynn muhleman went missing back in 1989. she was last seen packing up her things from her boyfriend's house in fremont. the couple also had a daughter together. police say based on current witness statements and physical evidence they believe muhleman was the

victim of a homicide. but her body was never found. ( darya ) a california doctor is in jail... charged with having sex with at least three minors. benjamin shettell has a practice in redding. the physician was arrested on 50 different charges. the allegations surfaced when an ex-boyfriend sent a message to the doctor's coworkers saying that shettell was having sex with multiple underage boys. at least one of the minors he's accused of having sex with was a patient. he is being held on 3 million dollars bail. .( darya ) a former san francisco international airport screener has pleaded guilty to receiving a bribe as a public official. joseph scott admits he allowed 50 pounds of cocaine to pass through his x-ray machine. police say scott accepted around 45-hundred dollars to allow the drugs to pass. the man who bribed scott was sentenced last week to four years in prison. he admitted to smuggling cocaine and marijuana through s-f-o security for several years by paying scott. a total of

seven bay area airport screeners face similar charges. ( mark ) president trump is promising a surprise when it comes to the republican health care bill. but the president is not offering any details about what that surprise might be. so far nine republican senators have opposed the current bill. a usa today poll shows that only 12 percent of americans support the bill that was released by republican senators last week. according to the congressional budget office, about 22-million americans would lose coverage under the plan. ( mark ) protesters shouted and held signs as president trump arrived at his first re-election fundraiser last night. donors for the event at the trump international hotel in washington paid 35-thousand dollars to attend. this fundraising event comes two and a half years sooner than either president obama or president george w. bush started re-election fundraising. ( darya ) happening today... the sonoma-marin

area rail transit district is offering a free preview of its smart train.( mark ) kron four's yoli acevas is live at the rohnert park stations with more on the preview. yoli? ( yoli ) it is happening between rohnert park and the marin civic center stations starting on thursday. the district will also run trains between the sonoma county airport station and the marin county fair at the marin civic center on july first and july fourth. the free preview is in advance of full regular train service between the airport station and downtown san rafael. a starting date for the regular service has not yet been announced.

your credit score when a new law goes into effect this weekend. experian, equifax and transunion are changing their standards starting on july first. those three credit agencies are wiping out about half of tax liens and almost all civil judgements from credit reports. people impacted could see their scores jump 20 to 40 points. the law is in response to a class action law suit claiming that people with the same name were getting mixed up, damaging a person's score.

credit score. critics of the law say people may appear more credit-worthy than they really are. and a warning from the experts: just because those marks from tax liens or civil judgments do not appear on your credit score after july first, does not mean they have totally vanished. you still have to to pay them off.

the u-s must prove a relationship with family already in the country. the ban will last for 90 days. ( darya ) the house of representatives will vote on a bill known as kate's law. the bill is named for kate steinle who was shot and killed in san francisco by an undocumented immigrant. it would impose mandatory minimum prison sentences for deportees who re-enter the country.( mark ) police near sacramento are investigating the death of a toddler who was found inside of a car. a man and woman have been detained and are being questioned by detectives. officers found an s-u-v parked in the wrong direction on a busy street. as officers began searching the car they found the body of a toddler covered with blankets in the backseat. "casa de novo" on the alameda has become a permanent home to

about 50 families. it was converted from a motel by "abode services". they partnered with the city of san jose and santa clara county to create the housing. half of the facility is set aside for temporary and transitional housing. the other half is permanent residences where the tenants also have access to services like counseling and job training. since 20-10, abode services has helped about 45-hundred homeless people off the streets.
