(vicki) two bills targeting the immigrant population now move to the senate. today the house passed - kate's law- named after a san francisco woman allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant. the other bill deals with "sanctuary cities". the white house says these proposed laws are essential to protect u-s citizens - opponents say the legislation hurts communities and instills fear. kron four's terisa estacio spoke with people on both sides of the debate. kate steinle's dad testified

that as his daughter lay in his arms after being struck by a bullet while walking on pier 14 she said, help me dad. the 32 year old pleasanton resident died 2 hours later. ever since that fateful day - the family has rallied and fought filing a lawsuit against san francisco - and backing measures to toughen laws. and on this day, the house of representatives voted overwhelmingly to approve kate's law. bob goodlatte, virginia representative. when you can take criminals off the streets. when you can prevent things from happening like what happened to kate steinle in san francisco. aarti kohli, executive director asian law caucus. " it was a very unfortunate case, tragic case, this bill wouldn't change anything that happened in the case." aarti kohli is with the asian law caucus, an immigrant activist organziation. in the steinle case, francisco lopez sanchez - arrested and charged in steinle's murder sparked a heated debate. lopez sanchez- shown here in court is an undocumented immigrant. he had been deported multiple times and had just been let

out when he allegedly stole a gun and fired it striking steinle. his attornies have argued, he did not intend to kill steinle or anyone, but the case sparked more controversy about us immigration policy. kate's law calls for enhanced penalties for convicted and deported criminals who reenter the us illegally. kohli. this is just a long part of an agenda that is anti-immigration they want to criminalize everyone who is undocumented. terisa estacio, reporting. an they are not the only ways speaking out about this. "i think it is a complex issue." i am not sure this is the way to go. and while opionions varied on the topic of supporting kate's law, everyone was unanimous in their support of kate's family. this saturday - marks two years since her death. it is just horrible. in san francisco, terisa estacio

(vicki) the "no sanctuary for criminals act" allows the government to deny federal funds to sanctuary cities that don't cooperate with ice officials. several bay area cities are considered sanctuary cities - including san francisco. however, neither bill is likely to make it past the senate. "kate's law" was introduced last year and failed to get the 60 votes it needed. the "no sanctuary for criminals act" could be an even harder sell because it involves cuts to law enforcement funding. (vicki) and the 'hill fire' burning right now in san luis obispo county... has torched nearly 16-hundred acres. among the property damaged by the fire... a ranch owned by actor johnny galecki. the co-star of "the big bang theory" was not there at the time. the ranch... located about 200-miles north of los angeles... isn't his primary residence. the hill fire is about 85-percent contained and evacuations have been lifted. (philippe) 23-year-old alex battaglia was arrested at his home in petaluma wednesday afternoon. randy says he's lived next door to battaglia and his family on sequoia drive for 13-years. he says he knew battaglia is gay... noting he recently broke up with his boyfriend... but couldn't imagine battaglia, who works in retail and studied cullinary arts, would have ever been accused of having sex with an underage boy.rand/neighbor- "i'm blown away here. i never thought that he would go that way, with the minor kids." petaluma police detective sergeant paul gilman says battaglia has been charged with mutiple sex crimes against a minor, including sodomy. gilman says battaglia's victim is a 15- year-old boy he met through the smartphone dating app for gay men called, grindr.paul gilman/petaluma police dept- "they, uh, chatted through that app for a while. they exchange some sexually explicit material and they

ultimately met for, uh, what they determined to be a date." gilman says battaglia may not have been aware that the boy was a minor the first time they met. but adds they got together two more times, and on both of those occasions, battaglia knew the boy was underage. to create an account, the grindr app requires an email address, password and date of birth . but there's no mechanism to actually verify a member's true age.paul gilman/petaluma police dept- "we do know that, uh, people under the age of 18 can lie about their age to get onto the app." in this case, the victim's mother found out about the relationship and called police. the investigation spanned about six months before battaglia was arrested. and, police say battaglia has admitted to exchanging sexually explicit materials with up to a dozen other minors. gilman says parents should keep a close eye on their kids' online activity, to get ahead of situations like this.paul gilman/petaluma police dept- "kids nowadays can be far more savvy than their parents. uh, we need to have those conversations so we know where to look and how to look." neighbor randy says battaglia

has had a rough go of it recently. his father passed away last year and he was recently arrested for d- u-i.randy/neighbor- "i'm, i'm shocked to say the least." battaglia is currently being held at the sonoma county jail. his bail set at 51-thousand dollars. he is due in court friday. in petaluma, philippe djegal, kron four news. (steve) university of california officials have imposed new systemwide procedures to combat sexual harassment... among the new procedures... investigations will be completed within 60 business days and decisions on discipline within 40 days after that. the new frameworks will also provide clear roles and responsibilities for title nine offices and other offices involved in the discipline of the cases. the university says the new procedures incorporate recommendations by the joint committee of the administration and the academic senate. the new procedures will be implemented at all u-c locations by september first... (vicki) the parents of an east bay teenager are suing the san ramon unified school

district. the teen made a controversial video while running for student body president. the school district says that the video showed images of terrorists. officials temporarily removed the student from his post as the student body president. he was eventually reinstated. the attorney for the parents released a statement to kron 4 saying the school acted unconstitutionally and punished the student for expressing his ideas. the school district has not commented on the lawsuit. (steve) a new federal report reveals, the majority of hate crimes experienced by americans over a 12-year period... went unreported. more than half of the 250-thousand hate crimes that took place between 2004 and 2015... we not reported to law enforcement for a variety reasons. the report says they went unreported - because hate crimes were handled some other way. but people also did not come forward because they did not feel it was important or that police would help. (steve) dramatic video has just been released out of baltimore of a shoot-out between an armed robbery suspect and police.. take a look."drop the gun right now....drop the gun" police say the man seen in the video...blaine robert erb...was a suspect in an armed robbery at a near by shopping center.. when police confronted him on a city bus he fired a shot at the officers..then ordered everyone to get off of the bus. erb can be seen in the video with two guns firing in all directions from the steps of the bus when he tries to make a run for it police fire back.. killing him. the officer that was shot has been released from the hospital. rise! the c-d-c estimates that 7-thousand to 8-thousand people are bit by venomous snakes each year.... and about five of those people die. now, the north texas poison control center says the numbers of snake bites have been rising.... by 100 to 200 a year... due to more global warming. the poison control center also says population density and human activity also plays a role in the number of snake bites. (vicki) many people use sun shades to block the heat out of their car... one woman from las vegas is now using them to remind parents to look for their children in the back seat before they get out to prevent tragedy... april washington started her business called "look back" to help remind parents not to leave their children in their cars especially when it gets into the hot summer months... she says she believes most people who leave their children in the car do it on accident and this is an easy

way to have them check the back seat. the shades have become popular across the country thanks to photos with different celebrities.. washington says she knows she can not save everyone...but even one life is worth it. percent of americans think the president's useof twitter is "reckless and distracting." pam and steve? meanwhile, president trump is set to meet with russian president vladimir putin. the meeting is supposed to happen next week... at the g-20 summit in germany. russia has reportedly been the one pushing for the meeting between the two leaders. it is one of several meetings with world leaders... planned during the president's trip. the agenda has not been set ... but it may be difficult to ignore the cloud hanging over the white house... with multipe investigations into russias meddling with the 2016 election .. and the possible ties between russia and the trump campaign. a hot air balloon had to make an emergency landing in the middle of a downtown santa rosa street this morning. this is video of the landing.. you can see some cars had to swerve out of the way of the balloon. it happened just before 10 a-m in the santa rosa plaza.. there were at least two people on board...luckily no one was hurt. there is no information yet on why the balloon had to make the

(steve) yeah, while most people love fireworks our four legged companions probably do not. in burlingame, the pennisulla humane society is hoping to help pet owners keep their dogs calm during this noisiest of holidays. kron 4's charles clifford has that story. nats4th of july fireworks can fun for people, but they're not much fun for pets. . . especially dogs. explosions and flashing lights don't remind them of america's independence day.sotevery year around this time the peninsula humane society sees a dramatic increase in the number of dogs being brought in off the street. these are usually pets that were left in a backyard and then got scared when they heard fireworks.sot

california's wildfire season is off to a dangerous start...with crews chasing down one new fire after another... catherine heenan is here with the latest on the string of

fires causing problems...and the new warnings on just how bad things could get.. (catherine) we knew things were bad.... now senator dianne feinstein is warning that this year's wildfire season could be more severe than last year... she's pointing to the fact that nearly 30-thousand acres have already burned. this is one of the latest fires - which is on the camp pendleton marine corps base and in neighboring san clemente... it was only about 10 percent contained earlier today...but at least it's been moving slowly. crews are protecting nearby neighborhoods and there are no evacuations yet. statewide - feinstein says millions of trees died during the drought years - and that couldlead to a "catastrophic scenario." other fires include this one in los angeles county that got dangerously close to hollywood hills and burbank homes but has since been knocked down. california's largest fire covers nearly 10 square miles and is in riverside county....it's now

86 percent contained. pam and steve? (pam) a man has been arrested after trying to move into a house in san rafael ... that was still up for sale.. deputies with the marin county sheriff's say, a realtor called them .. reporting two suspicious people trying to move into the house.. when police confronted them, one suspect... now identified as francisco reyes, who you see in this picture.... ran away.. deputies learned reyes was also wanted out of sacramento for a probabtion violation. with the help of alert residents in the area, deputies were able to find reyes .. he was taken into custody. (steve) the san jose police department is the subject of a scathing report from the federal government. the accusations being made about the misuse of hundreds of thousands of dollars in funds.(pam) and the warriors head into the free agency period with plenty of players they need to get under contract. why they could end up paying a penalty to the n-b-a.(steve) plus are we going to see a vote on health care right before the holiday?

( pam ) on the peninsula... people are being warned to be on the lookout for mountain lions. a big cat was spotted this morning in san carlos... it was seen roaming right near crestview drive and tulip lane. that is not far from interstate- 280. mountain lions are frequently spotted in this area... but they are not a major threat to humans. however, if you see one with cubs nearby... experts say... do not approach it.
