spectacular show on san francisco bay. for several weeks now, humpback whales have been feeding inside the golden gate. kron four's charles clifford reports they may be sticking around for a while. natsfriday afternoon, kron 4 departed san francisco's pier 39 with san francisco whale tours aboard their sixty five foot catamaran, the kitty kat. co-owner and capt. joseph nazar set course for the golden gate, optimistic that we would find whales west of the bridge. natsbut just past alcatraz island, the crew spotted humpbacks. natsbecause most humpback whale species along the california coast are either threatened or endangered, federal rules require that all vessels stay

at least 100 yards away from them in order to prevent collisions. capt nazar cut the engines and kept the kitty kat floating at a safe distance. earlier this week, a smaller boat was seen striking a whale near the golden gate bridge. nazar worries that sort of reckless behavior could harm the whales and give tour operators that play by the rules a bad name. sotit's very frustratingsoti don't think anyone want to intentionally hurt a whale. i think what needs to be done is truly an awareness campaign. sotif you're a hundred yards away stop the vessel. if the whale comes close to you the worst thing to do is move your boat. disengage the vessel completely. allow the whale to enjoy you and you enjoy the whale. once the whale swims a hundred yards away, move slowly away. speed and whale don't mix.natsafter about 90 minutes on the water, the kitty kat headed back to shore. no one on board seemed disappointed.sotwe saw six of seven inside the bay.
