(vicki) a man killed after speeding away from an attempted traffic stop is now identified as javier mercado. police tried pulling over the 26 year old in daly city early saturday around 4 a-m. but mercado did not stop. because he was going so fast, the officer did not chase him. but his car was found nearby a short time later. mercado had crashed into a pole. the south san francisco resident died at the scene. (vicki) a southern california father accused of killing his five year old son has pleaded not guilty. aramazd andressian junior went missing two months ago after police say he went to disneyland with his father. the boy's body was found on friday near a lake in santa barbara county. andressian senior was initially arrested then released in the boy's disappearance. detectives arrested him again last week in las vegas on suspicion of murder. police have said the alleged

motive for the killing is a "tumultuous divorce" andressian is being held on 10-million dollars bail. (steve) a frightening scene in boston today - when a taxi driver plowed into acrowd of people....injuring 10 of them.. (vicki) catherine heenan is here with the latest details...including the fact the incidentappears to have been an accident.. (catherine) when it first happened....the re were a lot of questions. partly because there have been recent terror incidents where a vehicle was used to injure people.. but authorities say this does 'not' appear to be intentional.. this was the scene at boston's airport....where some of the 10 people hit were badly injured. tonight we learned that the victims were the driver's fellow cabbies....who'd beenstanding outside a building at the airport's cab pool...waiting for their next assignments. police say the 56-year- old driver apparently stepped on the gas - instead of the brake. one of the victims has 'serious' injuries.....three others have

less serious but 'significant' injuries. investigators say they're still looking into what happened....but there's no evidence that this was anything but operator error... vicki and steve? (steve) valero is suing p-g-and-e--- claiming an abrupt power outage caused 75- million dollars in damage to the benicia refinery. the lawsuit claims p-g-and -e shut off electricity without prior notice. valero says the sudden loss of power forced an emergency shutdown of the refinery. it also triggered extensive flaring that sent black smoke pouring into the sky. and resulted in valero being fined. in response to the lawsuit p-g-and-e says a third=party firm is reviewing the outage. (vicki) the illinois man accused of kidnapping a grad student visiting from china appears to have attended a vigil for her. university of illinois police say brendt christensen was at last week's vigil for missing student, ying-ying zhang.. she recently came to the u-s to study at the university of illinois. zhang was last seen three weeks ago getting into a car. leads, based on that car, led f-b-i agents to search christensen's home, car and computer. the suspect was in court today but

did not offer a plea. a preliminary hearing is also scheduled for july 14th. (steve) there's still high security at the bronx hospital in new york where therewas a shooting rampage friday.. catherine heenan is here with details of what some of the hospital stafferswere saying today... (catherine) the people who work at the bronx lebanon hospital still can't believethat the gunman had once worked with them........a former doctor on staff. dr. henry bello shot 7 people - killing one of them - before turning the gun on himself. we now know that bello had been fired from a separate city job just oneweek earlier. and in 2015 he'd been forced out of the hospital - after being accused repeatedly of sexual harrassment... today a doctor and a nurse on staff talked about what happened ... the doctor says the father of the one woman who died - is heartbroken... dr. sridhar chilimuri: the father asked this question - why only my daughter died? it's tough to answer because everyone else survived that day. donna lee peterkin -

(steve) samsung is launching a new phone made from recalled galaxy note sevens. the refurbished, less expensive phone will be available in south korea later this week. the company is re-naming it the galaxy note f-e, short for fan edition. the new phone has a lower capacity batteries and it went through extensive testing. it will be about 30-percent cheaper than the original phone. samsung says it does not have plans to sell the new version of the phone in the u.s. (steve) late last year -- samsung was forced to recall galaxy note seven's... after a number of the devices exploded in flames. customers were told to shut their phones off and stop using it immediately the biggest smart phone maker in the world had to recall millions of its galaxy note sevens (vicki) we have a light fixture recall to tell you about. home depot is recalling thousands of these vanity fixtures from "design solutions international with home depot". the company says the light shades can detach and fall, which could lead to lacerations and burns.

home depot says it's received more than 100 reports of shades falling, leading to at least two people getting hurt. the fixtures come in three and four-light models, and were sold between december 20-14 and march of this year. (steve) a couple of cute baby deer amoung those saved by the fire fighters currenly battling a stubborn arizonia wildfire. the u.s. forest service posted this video on facebook showing the friday night rescue, where hotshots rounded up two deer fawns. the firefighters proceed to pick up the fawns and cradle them to safety. the deer were taken to a nearby unaffected habitat to be reunited with their mom. the fire broke out on june 24... burning about 43 square miles of land. it's 75- percent contained. since february... from a collapsed bridge and a massive landslide is now open. a public hiking trail that links visitors to popular tourist attractions in south big sur reopened over the weekend. officials say recent upgrades have made the trail safer than it was before the storms. big sur officials estimate they were losing up to 300- thousand dollars in revenue every day that it was closed. big fourth of the july fireworks show .... has been underway all day today. crews are loading up explosives set to be launched into the sky over the san francisco bay. good evening i'm pam moore.( steve ) and i'm steve aveson. kron4's maureen kelly gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the biggest fireworks displays on the west coast. before the explosions all that can be heard are hammersas 30 pyro technicians set up the mortars..that are wired up with what are called electronic matches..and loaded with 15-20 tons explosive material..in the form of aerial shells. this is a mock up of what they look like inside. they will be launched from two bargeswith roughly 10-thousand effects going off in 25 minutes. this video from last year gives you an idea of the specatular display to expect. (maureen) one of those barges is going to be located right out here

pass the municipal pier so unless you are out on a boat in the water everything here at aquatic park could be considered the next best thing to front row seatingthe second barge will be off pier 39. out on fisherman's wharf charter boat captains are selling seats on their vessals for around 65 bucks a pop. they say it's the best place to see the show.because they shoot off fireworks them out on boat and the best place to see them is on the bay and will get you real close and hopefully will be a great night tomorrow night and will have a blast(maureen)there are plenty of other places to watch the show from the other side of where those fireworks barges will be in the bay like here on treasure islandthe fireworks show producer says if you can see the sky above this part of the bay you'll be able to see the show. they've spent months planning for it.the one thing they can't plan for is fog. we can't adjust the show the show is predetermined but is predetermined based on the environment we're in. and we understand if we put a whole bunch of stuff high it might not be seen. so let's not waste all of our efforts on the high stuff because the high stuff is why people love the big bangs there are huge there like whoa. but if you focus too much attention on that then you might lose all that it's a good mix of highlow and mid range. they

( steve ) two people are dead following accidents on interstate 80... and the c-h-p says it has just found the driver it was looking for in one of the crashes. the first collision happened just after 4 a-m in san pablo. the c-h-p says a woman spun out and hit the center divide... that shutdown the road in the westbound direction for two hours. as she tried to get out of her car... another car tried to avoid the wreck but struck the woman and her car... killing her. the second crash happened at about 6-30 this morning in the same area near el portal drive. investigators say a big-rig made an unsafe lane

change...striking and killing a motorcyclist. witnesses say the truck pulled over for a few minutes then left the scene. just a short time ago the c-h-p says it has made contact with the driver and he is cooperating with investigators. (pam) p-g-and-e hit with a major lawsuit from valero. valero claims the utility company caused 75-million dollars in damage to the benicia refinery. the lawsuit stems back to a power outage in may. valero says, p-g-and -e shut off its electricity without notice. the loss of power forced an emergency shutdown of the refinery... and caused extensive flaring that sent black smoke billowing into the sky. valero was fined for that flaring. ( steve ) several bay area lakes remain closed because of toxic blue-green algae. over the weekend we told you about a creek in napa where it is belived the algae killed two dogs. lake temescal in oakland, horseshoe lake in fremont are also closed because of blue-green algae.

it can sicken humans and as we mentioned... kill pets that swim in the water. warning signs are posted at each location. they will not reopen until tests show the levels have dropped. a southern california man accused of killing his 5-year-old son was arraigned today... catherine heenan is here with more on the man who was initially found passed out in a park..... claiming he had no idea where the little boy had gone.. (catherine) this is aramazd andressian in court today...where he pleaded not guilty to murder. authorities have made it clear that they never believed his story.... his little boy disappeared in april, and the 5-year-old's body was found this past friday near a lake. andressian was taken into custody in april...but released because of a lack of evidence.. he was then formally arrested june 23rd. his son was reported missing after his father took him to disneyland....and authorities say andressian had been going through a difficult divorce.

the father was found unconscious in a southern california park...police say he'd taken pills and doused his car with gasoline, in an apparent suicide attempt. the judge set bail today for andressian at 10-million dollars.. another court hearing is set for august. steve and pam? ( steve ) a big story tonight: new jersey governor chris christie has created an uproar after photos showed him lounging on a beach that was closed to the public. ( pam ) the state government is shutdown ... meaning state- run beaches are closed and state- employed lifeguards are on furlough. polo sandoval, with our partners at c-n-n, tells us how the governor is pushing back. new jersey governor chris christie is not backing down after criticism of his decision to spend the day at the beach voice of governor chris christie/ (r) new jersey: "they caught me doing what i said i was going to do with the people i said i was going to be with."but these photos

( steve ) a 3-month-old baby boy is fighting for his life tonight at children's hospital in oakland. the boy and his mother survived a deadly hit-&-run accident, an accident that killed his two older brothers. a suspect in the deadly collision is in police custody tonight. ( pam ) kron4's haaziq madyun spoke to the suspect's pastor who says... he knows the man is a good person.

(on cam)a man facing (on cam) 35-year-old lumuel wilson, the man who allegedly killed two little boys and injured their mother and critically injured their baby brother in a deadly traffic accident on hwy-4...lost a child of his own in a shooting incident back in june of 2016 in oakland wilson's pastor tyrone duckett says it was through the death of reginna jefferies that he

developed a spiritual releationship with a man now accused of killing two little boys in a horrific traffic accident and allegedly running away from the scenethat is why pastor duckett finds it hard to contemplate the what is alleged heresaturday morning wilson checked into a local hospital. c-h-p investigators say it was there that they linked his dna to evidence found at the scene. in addition to the two boys who were killed in their mother hospitalized with major has since been however their 3-month-old bay brother remains in condition at childrens hospital in oakland...haazikron4news the number of homeless people is on the rise in the south bay. san jose says, it has counted more than 43- hundred people on the streets... that's an increase of seven- percent. the city adds ... many of those people are not living in shelters but instead staying in dangerous places on the streets. the survey also discovered a large number of encampents... more than 600 total. cities have to do counts every two years... in

(steve) firefighters are battling to contain a wildfire north of fresno. the so- called spring fire is burning in mariposa county. it started along state route 49... then jumped the highway that forced families to evacuate and shut down some lanes of the highway and nearby roads so far it's burned more than 2- hundred acres. and is 15 percent contained. but fire crews have stopped forward progress. (pam) arizona firefighters are not only battling explosive wildfires --- they are saving animals too. an elite firefighting crew rescued two baby deer... after they were spotted in the midst of danger. the deer fawns were near the fire line of an aggressive wildfire in the prescott national forest. they quickly picked up the small animals and cradled them to safety. the deer were taken to a nearby area to be reunited with mom. that wildfire has burned more than 44- square miles.

for the second straight year in a row -- hate crimes in california are on the rise this is video from recent activity right here in the bay area. there were 931- hate crimes statewide in 2016. that is an 11- percent jump. more than half of those were based on a victim's race of ethnicity. more than 20-percent of the incidents were because of sexual orientation. a lower percentage targeted a victim's religion. that's despite the national debate over the president's controversial ban on travel from muslim majority countries. (steve) new at six. police have recovered two kayaks found in an inaccessible and uninhabitable area of petaluma. officers were on a routine patrol of the petaluma riverwhen they

congressman andre carson wants to require all new planes to have a secondary secure barrier protecting the cockpit. carson: if pilots have to go to the restroom and they want to stretch -- they're still vulnerable. both carson and peters said travelers have no reason to worry about their safety as they head out on summer vacations, but there is room for us airlines to improve. carson: we don't want to alarm anyone -- but at the same time, it's a necessary inconvenience as we move forward. jess tagtiming on the house and senate votes is still up in the air -- but lawmakers need to pass the faa reauthorization act before their august recess. in washington, i'm jessica smith. (steve) and speaking of travel...airline passengers from abu dhabi to the u-s... can bring their laptops into

cabins again. that's according to the department of homeland security. it said it lifted the ban just yesterday. electronic devices larger than a cellphone were banned from cabins on u.s.-bound flights from ten international airports. but officials now say there are additional security measures for passengers from abu dhabi. the ban is still in place for flights from the other nine airports that are in africa and the middle east.
