(steve) in the east bay... todos santos plaza was the place to be for parade watchers... celebrating this year's independence day in the city of concord this year's theme was a salute to the future, highlighting innovation and technology happening in the east bay town. the parade route was packed with folks enjoying the long standing fourth of july holiday tradition dating back to the early 1950's one patriotic grandpa brought his little granddaughters to the parade so they could see the festivities for the first time (steve) the city of concord's

offical fireworks show starts at 9pm tonight at mount diablo high school. that is only place you can see fireworks in that town without breaking the law. concord police say they will be out in force cracking down on any illegal fireworks taking place... anywhere else in the city (vicki) nothing says the fourth of july like a good old fashioned small town parade. they're happening all over the country today. the one folks enjoyed in alameda claims to be one of the largest and longest independence day parade in the nation. kron4's maureen kelly shows us the sights and sounds. happy fourthalameda showed off their pride in town and country today.embodying small town american, usa. the 3 mile long parade of floats featured marching bands..and little league baseball teams.. some who live on the parade route fired up their grills.as they watched military members march by. flags were waved.popsicles were enjoyed .and bubbles were blown.it's local hometown

(steve) and people in san jose... are reminding folks that fireworks are áillegal. drive down one neighborhood in san jose and you can see signs like these all around. some of the sign's read 'please don't use fireworks. they're illegal'... or - "got fireworks? get a ticket". people in the area say they put up the signs... due to the increase in fire danger. just last week, two grass fires broke out - one came dangerously close to homes. and police are warning people... if you are caught with fireworks, you will be fined. at a valero gas station in antioch. the owner of the business on hillcrest avenue at east 18th street says 57-year-old mohammed jawad altai is the man who was shot and killed during a robbery. it happened at around 8-30 in the evening, the antioch police department says an officer also opened fire on the gunman shortly after arriving on scene. a frequent customer who knows the victim says he immigrated here from afghanistan more than two decades ago. walid barakat/customer who knew clerk- "we grew up in a, back home in afghanistan and come here from, you know, war over there, you know, all the bad things going on, then come in a peaceful here, become citizen, visa, as like, owner american, uh, then happened ended up like this. i never, i , i, still, i never thought that this happened ended up look like this. some innocent people is dying." the suspect's whereabouts are unclear. neighbors in the area, believe he may have been wounded by the officer

(rob live) im here on south 10th south 10th street, home to a lot of students. other than that there is no apparent connection to the university. but neighbors tell me the house where the shooting occurred was the scene of a lot parties with people coming and going at all hours... anonymous neighbor"...i did hear arguing between two people but i never imagined something like this could happen...."wanting to remain anonymous, this woman and another neighbor of this house on south 10th, where a woman was found dead on monday, said they both heard what sounded like a heated argument inside

(vicki) in preparation for the next drought. a dozen bay area water agencies are moving ahead with an $800 million expansion of one of the largest reservoirs in the region. the plan is to raise the los vaqueros reservoir's dam by 55 feet... to make it 273 feet high. the construction would also expand the size of los vaqueros over 115-thousand acre-feet. officials believe that's enough water when full...for the annual needs of nearly two million people. (steve) happening now... police are investigating a wave of vandalism in berkeley . more than two dozen people had spray paint on their property or had their tires slashed. officers

were called to a home on hillside avenue wednesday for a report of vandalism. a victim's car was spray painted and police who responded ultimately counted 13 cars and gates nearby that had been vandalized. officers discovered over 14 other cases of vandalizsm in the same area. anyone with information is asked to call police. (vicki) police in berkeley are also searching for two men who assaulted and robbed another man. the thieves also attacked someone who tried to stop them. it happened sunday morning at people's park. a man was sitting in the park when another man hit him in the back of the head with a piece of wood. the victim fell to the ground when another person stole his backpack. a witness saw the attack and got out of his car to try and stop it. one of the attackers threatened the witness while the other hit him in the back of the head. police do not have a detailed description of either of the attackers. (vicki)several community members in aurora, colorado are angry. . . after a memorial site was found vandalized over the weekend. this is one of the pictures posted on the nonprofit organization's website. . . for the colorado freedom memorial.you can see the glass completely shattered. the whole piece is made up of 24 panels of glass that lean in different directions.. . . many of which have the names of fallen military members from colorado.the organization says that it does not have the money to replace the panel . . .which will cost them around 55-thousand dollars. (steve)clean-up crews in lake tahoe are on hand. . . after a quarter of a million people are expected to visit for the fourth of july today. . . . that's making for crowded conditions because rain and melted snow have raised the lake's level by about six feet. the higher water levels mean that the beach area has been reduced to only about 10-percent of what it normally is.people are now spread over a much smaller area. . .making for some messy conditions.last year. . .visitors left behind 16-hundred pounds of trash and it looks like things are going to be much worse this year. beachgoers are expected to leave behind more than seven thoussand cigarette butts. local clean-up groups plan to start picking up the trash tomorrow morning. (steve) but for many military veterans... those same fireworks can come with awful reminders of what it costs to keep us free. joe khalil explains. fourth of july fireworks are a hallmark of celebrating freedom. but for some who've risked their lives defending that freedom-- fireworks--bring them right back to the horrors of the battlefield. richard tincher/vietnam war veteran: "it's my anxiety and my depression, i'm trying to get away from the noise." richard tincher lives in mather village--a complex built exclusively for military veterans. he says when he--and many of his neighbors hear the explosions of fireworks--it triggers their post traumatic stress disorder--or ptsd. richard tincher/vietnam war veteran: "i kind of like turn the tv up, shut the windows." joe khalil/reporting: "at mather village there are cases of ptsd here, some worse than others, but any fireworks show nearby could trigger quite a

(vicki) and happening tomorrow... the contra costa county animal services department will be working hard to try and reunite lost pets with their owners. every year after the fourth, the animal services department says its overwhelmed with lost pets and calls about lost animals... who were frightened by the fireworks and took off. so this year the animal service department will set up booths outside its offices... where people can check in and locate their lost pet or file a report for this missing pet. it starts tomorrow at 10 a-m. ( steve ) one of the bigger celebrations is in danville and the city's parade. it so popular... people try to stake out spots days ahead of time. the city actually warned people this year... they could not put chairs out until 6 p-m last night. a large crowd lined the city streets as always. a wide variety of people took part... we saw everything from boyscouts to a group of motorcyclists waving american flags. people cheered them... and some onlookers decided the best way to enjoy the parade was just to sit on the pavement in the shade. ( catherine ) we move across the bay to redwood city. the city posted this picture of its annual parade which dates back to 1939. it's a big year for the city... this is its 150th anniversary.. they kicked things off this morning with a fourth of july pancake breakfast. (steve) the town of alameda claims to have one of the largest and longest independence day parades in the nation.(steve) it's certainly one of the quaintest. they feature boy scouts on bikes, military color guards and school marching bands. the organizers say they typically draw 60-thousand people who revel in it's small town charm. alameda is a very close town we know everybody and every fourth of july we come together and hang out and have a good timewe honor everyone

( steve ) a violent robbery at an antioch valero gas station ended in the shooting death of a cashier. the suspect was wounded by an officer who opened fire.( catherine ) gunshots were reported just before 8-30 last night. the gas station is on hillcrest avenue at east 18th street. kron four's philippe djegal tells us more about the man who was killed... (philippe) the owner of the gas station has identified the 57-year-old clerk killed in the shooting... as mohammed jawad altai. the owner says he immigrated here to the united states from afghanistan with his wife and kids. and, that he'd actually worked in this shop for several years.walid barakat/customer who knew clerk- "i can't explain --

( steve ) there is a bold plan in the works tonight to expand one of the biggest reservoirs in the east bay. water agencies want to raise the dam at los vaqueros reservoir from 55-feet to 273- feet. it would nearly double the capacity to serve about one-point-four million customers. but this is going to cost some serious cash. the project is expected to cost 800-million dollars. the contra costa water district is going to hold public meetings over the proposal. ( steve ) meanwhile work is progressing farther north on the rebuilding of the damaged oroville dam. you may remember the spillway crumbled and the emergency spillway nearly failed over the winter. that would have led to a major disaster downstream and resulted in the

evacuation of nearly 200- thousand people. crews are busy fixing all the problems and they are racing to get the work done by november. the price tag to fix the damage... estimated at about 300-million dollars. (catherine) in colorado - an elderly driver drove her car into a mountain resort pool... the woman - who is in her 70's, told police she thought her brakes weren't working. she apparently hit the gas instead... drove up a hill, hit a fence, went airborne, and landed in the pool she was checked out at a hospital.... crews drained the pool and got the car out yesterday.... the woman is expected to be okay.
