(will) breaking news we are following out of new york this morning... a police officer killed in an ambush style attack. investigators say that the female officer was sitting in her patrol car early this morning when the gunman shot her in the head. the shooter took off but was later shot and killed by police. police say a bystander was also hit by a bullet and is in stable condition. the officer has been identified as miosotis familia. she had been with the n-y-p-d for 12 years. (will) happening now: bay area police are on high alert. now that the big fireworks shows are over the concern now shifts to illegal fireworks. and for good reason take a look at this. illegal

fireworks lighting up the skies all over oakland. there is no official show there but very powerful fireworks lit up the night sky non stop. right now police are out in force cracking down. and it's not just illegal fireworks. a lot of bay area cities ban any kind of amateur fireworks. even things like sparklers. one of those places is contra costa county. kron4's alecia reid rode along with police looking for people breaking the rules. law enforcement sees illegal fireworks as a threat to public safety.but many of the people using them, say they're just trying to have fun.pkg happy 4th of julyyyyyyy bar-be-queing and fun are synonymous with the 4th of july holiday. but the brentwood police department has a task force dedicated to tracking down the illegal use

of fireworks.it's a safety issue for us. we had a very large fire last year because of someone using illegal fireworks. we have a lot of medical calls where people get hurt because they don't know how to properly use the fireworks or they're not paying attention and someone gets hurt. so for us, we don't want to ruin the fun, it's just that we want to make sure that everyone has fun and has a good fourth.officers weren't out just to give warnings. they also took the time out to do some community policing. happy 4th ok. try to stay cool and drink a lot of water. it's hot out here.there were a number of complaints of fireworks, but every time we showed up. they were gone. we managed to catch up to one group. but the guy that had the illegal fireworks got away. (why were you guys running?) because we're stupid. we thought we were going to get into trouble.they scared the crap out of us. we probably won't be doing that again.the fireworks they managed to get their hands on weren't easy to get.mainly because it's illegal in contra costa county, so we had to go to almost sacramento.standup earlier this evening it was quite difficult for officers to find the people using illegal fireworks.but tonight has proven to be extremely busy.the police department has been handing out a number of summonses.reporting live in

later arrested at highland hospital in oakland. he was booked on suspicion of vehicular homicide. bail is set at 500-thousand dollars. (will) we are hearing from the family of a gas station clerk killed during a robbery attempt. it happened on monday in antioch. kron4's j-r stone spoke with the vicitm's daughter who says her dad worked seven days a week to support his family. station where ataie worked. his daughter nedah described to us what police told her family.sot the suspect went over the counter pistol whipped him shot him twice in his back. an off duty officer saw him and shot the guy and now i'm hearing that that person passed away but i can't confirm it because i haven't heard it from police officers themselves.ataie's family says he made minimum wage but was able to support his wife and three kids by working seven days a week, 12 hours a day. he came to the united states from afghanistan in 1998 and was living his american dream. the day he became a citizen he was the happiest man on earth.it still doesn't feel real i feel like i'm going to go home and he's going to be sitting there and telling me how was your day and where did you guys go oh you guys are homehe always greeted us with a smile whenever we saw him. i'll always love him and he may be gone physically but i

( terisa ) breaking news we are following out of new york this morning... a police officer has died in an ambush style attack. investigators say that the female officer was sitting in her patrol car early this morning when the gunman shot her in the head. the shooter took off but was later shot and killed by police. police say a bystander was also hit by a bullet and is in stable condition. the officer has been identified as miosotis familia. she had been with the n-y-p-d for 12 years. ( james ) the united states and south korea held a joint missile drill held a

officials from the state departmentand the white house held meetings yesterday to try and come up with a way to stop north korea. the united nations security council will hold an emergency meeting today to discuss the missile launch. ( terisa ) president trump is headed to poland this morning on his second overseas trip since taking office. later on this trip... he is set to meet with russian president vladimir putin this week. the two leaders will sit down friday at the g-20 summit in germany. this will be the president's first meeting with putin. it is not clear what the two leaders will talk about. the white house has not said if the president will bring up russia's attempt to influence the presidential election. we're told that both presidents have a long list of topics that they want to address. the nation's independence with spectacular fireworks. we brought you some of the best and biggest shows live - right here on kron4. take a look -- this is video from san francisco -- downtown san jose -- the alameda county fair and marin county fair. if you missed it -- we've posted the fireworks shows on kron4-dot- com. ( james ) and happening today... the contra costa county animal services is working to reunite pets that got scared and ran away from the fireworks last night. ( terisa ) today is the busiest day of the year for animal rescue services. kron 4's lydia pantazes is live in martinez with the details. ( lydia ) this year contra costa animal services, will have booths set up outside

their offices where people can check in and locate their lost pets or file a report that their pet is missing. ( lydia ) ( lydia ) ( lydia ) it's being called "mission every year after the 4th, contra costa co. animal inundated with lost pets and calls about lost pets who frightened by the fireworks and took off from their surroundings.will be for lost pets and the other for pets who were found. this is the first event of contra costa county.( lydia ) they open today from 9am to 4pm. but they are closed between 12 and 1pm. reporting live in martinez, lydia pantazes kron4 news.

( james ) there were also parades throughout the day all around the bay area. here was the scene in alameda yesterday. the city claims to be one of the largest and independence day parades in the nation. the three mile long parade of floats featured marching bands, little league baseball teams as well as honoring the military. people along the parade route fired up their grills and were decked out in red white and blue. ( james ) the bay area's diversity was also on display. a sikh motorcycle club went down the street, latino cowboys showed off their riding skills and a gay pride float added rainbow colors to the mix. ( terisa ) some parts of

the east bay were so busy that people had to walk miles to get to their july fourth parties and barbecues. it was a packed scene at the swimming lagoon at don castro regional recreation area in alameda county. the parking lot reached capacity shortly after noon, so people had to park in a nearby neighborhood and walk to their parties. despite the parking problems, people who spoke to kron four said they had a great time at the park. ( terisa ) the swimming lagoon did ánot reach capacity. extra lifeguards were working, allowing the park to let in more than 14-hundred swimmers throughout the day without

having to turn anyone away. people who have been here for indpenedence day in the past say this was the busiest year they've seen. big story we're following this morning... in england... 11-month-old charlie gard has a rare disease that doctors say is untreatable and slowly killing him. they say the humane thing to do is take him off life support and let him go.( terisa ) this comes despite efforts of help... from two of the most powerful men in the world. john lorinc has the story. charlie gard turned 11 months old yesterday. and the infant, suffering from a rare genetic condition, is fighting for his life. these tubes are keeping him alive. chris gard/father: "he's a little trooper and a little fighter, and he's still fighting out there." charlie was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease shortly after birth and doctors say his brain damage is irreversible. they are calling for charlie's life support to be shut off. but not everyone agrees with that decision. nat sound: "we're still fighting! we're still fighting! save charlie gard save charlie gard!" pope francis said charlie's parents should be able to "treat their child

until the end." and on tuesday, a pediatric hospital in the vatican offered to take charlie into its care. however, the london hospital told vatican officials, they're not able to legally transfer the child. president donald trump has also offered his sympathies...saying "if we can help little charlie gard as per our friends in the u.k. and the pope, we would be delighted to do so." charlie's parents would like to have their son released to them, so that they can try an experimental treatment in the u.s. but a court ruled against them, saying there's no chance of charlie's health improving chris gard/father: "our parental rights have been stripped away, we can't even take our own son home to die, we've been denied that, d'you not think we've been put through enough." charlie's life support is expected to be turned off on friday. i'm john lorinc reporting. the kron 4 morning news. kron four's rob fladeboe has the latest on the investigation. anonymous neighbor"...i did hear arguing between two people but i never imagined something like this could happen...."wanting to remain anonymous, this woman and another neighbor of this house on south 10th, where a woman was found dead on monday, said they both heard what sounded like a heated argument inside the residence. anonymous neighbor"....she says she was trying to take a nap and heard arguing, someone was arguing about something,

she says she wassort of sleeping and didn't think much of it at the time....."about 5 o'clock monday evening someone called 9-1-1 to request a welfare check on someone at the home and not long after that, the homicide team was called in.officer albert morales/san jose police "...when officers arrived they spoke to the person who called 911. the person told them he had heard two loud bangs inside the residence. the officers then located a woman who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound...." police, who were at the scene all night, say the victim and suspect were known to each other. neighbors say the home has been the scene of frequent, all night parties with people coming and going at all hours but until now, other than the frequent arguments, there was no sign of the violence that erupted on monday.anonymous neighbor ".....it's scary to think about something like this happening so close, you know, you think, was it just random, what ifit could happen to you as well...."rob fladeboe/san jose"...police provided no information with regard to a suspect description but they did say he should be considered armed and dangerous. this was the 15th homicide so far this year in san jose compared with 25 this time a year ago. in san jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news ( james ) a san jose earthquakes player is in critical condition this morning after a swimming accident at lake tahoe.

according to team officials... matheus silva was swimming in lake tahoe and had to be pulled out of the water. rescuers preformed c-p-r and he was airlifted to a hospital in reno. silva is a midfielder for the earthquakes. he is currently on loan from the earthquakes' affiliate team in reno. ( james ) a stolen fire truck belonging to an oxnard fire department has been found. the truck you see here. . . turned up in san francisco yesterday morning. it was stolen monday. there is no word yet on whether any arrests have been made. ( terisa ) a major bridge on highway one that was damaged by storms back in february will reopen later this summer. the pfeiffer canyon bridge in big sur had to be completely torn down. crews are busy this morning working on rebuilding that bridge. pieces of the new steele bridge are being made in vallejo. right now they are getting ready to be taken down to big sur where they

will be put in place. crews still have a long way to go but they say they are confident that the bridge will reopen in september. ( james ) at least 40 states are refusing to supply president trump's controversial voter integrity commission with sensitive voter information. the president has argued, with no proof, that massive voter fraud happened in last fall's election. several state officials say they will refuse to share the data or demand the white house get a court order to obtain it. many are citing privacy concerns in not handing over the information. others are openly questioning the adminstration's moves. ( james ) the federal court could decide this week whether to block the commission's

request for the voter information. ( terisa ) police have identified the husband and wife whose small plane crashed on a southern california freeway. 62--year-old francis pisano and 55-year-old janan pisano both suffered spinal fractures and cuts. they were the only people aboard the plane which crashed on the i-45 in santa ana last friday. the plane burst into flames. the pilot had reported losing power in one engine. he said that he couldn't make it back to the airport. an off-duty firefighter pulled the couple from the fiery wreck. no one on the ground was hurt.... the couple is in stable condition this morning. ( terisa ) the person who created the video showing president trump beating up c-n-n is apologizing to the network this morning. an unidentified reddit user came forward saying he created the video. the president retweeted the video showing him beating up a man with the c-n-n logo over his face. the president faced crticism

from journalism advocates saying that he was promoting violence. in his apology, the reddit user said the video was meant to be a joke and was not meant to encourage violence against the media. ( terisa ) two capitol state police officers are honored for stopping the ballpark ambush that left a congressman and five others injured. u-s capitol police special agent david bailey and crystal griner were recognized yesterday. they received the law enforcement commendation medal from the d-c society of the sons of the american revolution. bailey and griner were both injured during the shooting

last month in virgina in which louisiana congressman steve scalise and five others were ( terisa ) congressman scalise remains in the hospital this morning. he is recovering from the injuries he suffered in the shooting. ( james ) there is a new plan in the works to expand one of the biggest reservoirs in the east bay. water agencies want to raise the dam at los vaqueros reservoir from 55-feet to 273-feet. it would nearly double the capacity to serve about one-point-four million customers. but the project is expected to cost 800- million dollars. the

contra costa water district is going to hold public meetings over the proposal. ( terisa ) a woman is accused of setting fire to a home with her ex-boyfriend inside then crashing her car through the kitchen wall.( james ) this happened in stockton. kay recede has the details. by neighbors accounts -- cottage court is a peaceful place to live -- but peace is sometimes short-lived(sot - dario vasquez, neighbor)"and heard a loud noise it wasn't like crash but it was a loud noise."the stockton police department says this woman-- arr-nivia patron crashed her car into this now boarded up garage on monday night... investigators say her ex boyfriend and his current girlfriend had made a home here.(kay recede)"here's what you can't see but you can smell. neighbors say patron doused this meter with gasoline and tried to set it on fire."patron was quickly arrested... police were about to leave -- but before they could dario vasquez approached an officer with a concern (vasquez)"i pretty much knew

( terisa ) a town here in california celebrated the fourth of july in a unique way without using fireworks. the town called downieville used bubble-wrap instead. that's because downieville is near the tahoe national forest. fireworks could easily start a wildfire in that area.

people were encouraged to step on a huge roll of bubble-wrap that was laid out on the street. this has been a tradition in downieville for the past fifteen years. ( james ) san jose's joey chesnut is back at it again chewing his way to victory. chestnut won the nathan's famouse international hot dog eating contest in new york. chestnut devoured 72 hotdogs in just ten minutes.

that's a new record. he defeated san jose native matt stonie who ate 48. stonie defeated chestnut back in 20-15...but since then chestnut has stepped up his game. chestnut's big win this year...marks his tenth victory in the contest. dead, but police have not released more information. we spoke with the victim's daughter who says her dad worked seven days a week to support his family. ( james ) ataie came to the united states from afghanistan nearly 20 years ago, and later became a u-s citizen. he leaves behind a wife and three kids. ( terisa ) another big story we are following this morning... new details on the hit and run crash that killed two young boys and injured a baby. on monday night the family of 3-month old luciano reyes told us his condition was upgraded to stable. but yesterday the family says the baby has had several seizures and is now listed in critical condition. he is unable to breathe on his own. the crash happened friday night when a

car veered off a highway four off- ramp in concord and slammed into the car carrying the three young boys and their mother. two boys, ages 5 and 10 died at the scene. police say the driver of the other car... ...le muel ( mule) wilson junior... took off from the crash. he was later arrested at highland hospital in oakland. he was booked on suspicion of vehicular homicide. officer is dead this morning after he was struck by a car trying to help a woman who was in distress after she hit a deer. officer robert johnson was on the way home after his shift in new york last night. that's when he saw a woman in distress and pulled over off the side of the road. johnson started to help the injured deer that she hit. he was then struck by a car and died at the scene. his department is now looking back at the 60- year-old's legacy.

states and south korea held a joint missile drill after north korea claimed to have conducted its first successful test of a long-range missile. the u.s. has condemned north korea's launch of what they beleive is an international ballistic missile. experts say the missile could have along enough range to hit alaska but not the rest of the united states. the launch comes as north korea also continues to pursue the development of a nuclear warhead. ( james ) top officials from the state departmentand the white house held meetings yesterday to try and come up with a way to stop north korea. the united nations security council will hold an emergency meeting today to discuss the missile launch. ( terisa ) president trump is on his way to poland this morning his second overseas trip since taking office. this is new video of president trump and the

first lady getting ready to take off in washington, d-c. he'll meet with leaders in poland and croatia. later on this trip... he is set to meet with russian president vladimir putin this week. the two leaders will sit down friday at the g-20 summit in germany. this will be the president's first meeting with putin. it is not clear what the two leaders will talk about. the white house has not said if the president will bring up russia's attempt to influence the presidential election. we're told that both presidents have a long list of topics that they want to address. ( terisa ) today is the busiest day of the year for animal rescue services. kron 4's lydia pantazes is live in martinez with the details. ( lydia )(lydia)this year contra costa animal services, will have booths set up outside their offices where people can check in and locate their lost pets or file a report that their pet is missing.it's being called "mission unite".every year after the 4th, contra costa co. animal services is inundated with lost pets and calls about lost pets who were

frightened by the fireworks and took off from their surroundings.one booth will be for lost pets and the other booth will be for pets who were found.this is the first event of its kind here in contra costa county.they open today from 9am to 4pm.but they are closed between 12 and 1pm. reporting live in martinez, lydia pantazes kron4 news. ( james ) thanks to mother nature visitors were able to snowboard and ski at squaw valley for independence day. and if you didn't make it up to the sierra some resorts are staying open. with five lifts and only six feet of base snow pack thousands waited in heavy lines to ride the slopes. sqauw valley officials are calling it " an endless winter." even though squaw officials say they lose three inches of snow each day.... they announced that they will be open again next saturday. a central california teenager has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for human trafficking of younger girls. 18-year-old jelina jane almario was arrested in kings county - south of fresno - of last year. police say

she operated a pimping ring that involved girls 14 and 15 years of age. despite being a juvenile, she was tried as an adult for human trafficking, sending threatening emails to a family member of at least one of the girls and making terrorist threats. she was sentenced yesterday, just two days after her 18th birthday. you could soon start seeing weed businesses opening up in sonoma county. today county workers will begin accepting permit applications for medical marijuana businesses. california's new laws for marijuana businesses require that operators have local permits before seeking state licenses. the department of agriculture will issue permits to outdoor cultivators up to 10-thousand square feet in certain agricultural zones. permits are not required for personal use or cultivation up to 100 square feet at a home or backyard garden. ( james ) public school's

across the country are re- thinking how they handle unpaid lunch debts. this comes after parents are upset over school's singling out children by taking food away or stamping them with a payment reminder. the u-s agriculture department is requiring districts to adopt policies this month for addressing meal debts. the california senate already approved a bill in may that prevents schools from denying lunch if a parent or guardian has not paid. districts must inform parents about the new policies at the start of the upcoming school year. ( james ) former san francisco 49ers' punter max runager has died. he was found dead in his car in a south carolina parking lot on friday. police say no foul play is suspected. runager played 11 seasons in the n-f-l. he was a member of the niners 19-84 super bowl team and also won a championship with the philadelphia eagles. runager's brain will reportedly undergo testing to determine if he had any concussion type injuries during his playing career.

runager was 61 years old. a colorado service dog that was stolen by a california woman is expected to be reunited with her owner this morning. four-and-a half-year-old susi is a service dog from colorado. she was stolen two weeks ago by a woman vacationing in the state. susi's owner did some digging and found the woman who stole susi lived in monterey county.

( james ) people flying to the u-s from istanbul and dubai can now walk onto an airplane with their laptop. turkish airlines and emirates say the u-s ban on items bigger than a smartphone no longer have to be stored in luggage. officials with turkish airlines say they've boosted security measures and protocols which meet security guidelines set by the department of homeland security. the u-s's ban, which was announced in march is still in effect for some airports in north africa and the middle east. a different ban on flights from turkey to the united kingdom remains in place. ( james ) a man is dead this morning after he drove a car full of propane tanks into an apartment building. police say it was to get back at his girlfriend after they got into a fight. she lived in this apartment building. police say the 31-year-old man had a history of domestic trouble. they believe he targeted five people in the unit, including

( james ) police are searching for the gunman in a deadly shooting at a home near san jose state university. we first told you about this story yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. a neighbor called police around 5:00 monday night on south 10th street. they requested a welfare check. shortly after, a homicide team was called into the home. police say the victim and gunman knew each other. a person in the area who did not want to show her face says the community is on edge.

could happen to you as well, so it is scary.>( james ) police have not provided a description of the killer. this was san jose's 15th homicide of the year. at this time last year, they had 25. a san jose earthquakes player is in critical condition this morning after a swimming accident at lake tahoe. according to team officials... matheus silva was swimming in lake tahoe and had to be pulled out of the water. rescuers preformed c-p-r and he was airlifted to a hospital in reno. silva is a midfielder for the earthquakes. he is currently on loan from the earthquakes' affiliate team in reno. a stolen fire truck belonging to an oxnard fire department has been found. the truck you see here. . . turned up in san francisco yesterday morning. it was stolen monday. there is no word yet on whether any

arrests have been made. ( james ) a major bridge on highway one that was damaged by storms back in february will reopen later this summer. the pfeiffer canyon bridge in big sur had to be completely torn down. crews are busy this morning working on rebuilding that bridge. pieces of the new steele bridge are being made in vallejo. right now they are getting ready to be taken down to big sur where they will be put in place. crews still have a long way to go but they say they are confident that the bridge will reopen in september. ( james ) at least 40 states are refusing to supply president trump's controversial voter integrity commission with sensitive voter information. the president has argued, with no proof, that massive voter fraud happened in last fall's election. several state officials say they will refuse to share the data or demand the white house get a court

order to obtain it. many are citing privacy concerns in not handing over the information. others are openly questioning the adminstration's moves. ( james ) the federal court could decide this week whether to block the commission's request for the voter information. police have identified the husband and wife whose small plane crashed on a southern california freeway. 62--year-old francis pisano and 55-year-old janan pisano both suffered spinal fractures and cuts. they were the only people aboard the plane which crashed on the i-405 in santa ana last friday. the plane burst into flames. the pilot had reported losing power in one engine. he said that he couldn't make it back to the airport.

an off-duty firefighter pulled the couple from the fiery wreck. no one on the ground was hurt.... the couple is in stable condition this the person who created the video showing president trump beating up c-n-n is apologizing to the network this morning. an unidentified reddit user came forward saying he created the video. the president retweeted the video showing him beating up a man with the c-n-n logo over his face. the president faced crticism from journalism advocates saying that he was promoting violence. in his apology, the reddit user said the video was meant to be a joke and was not meant to encourage violence against the media. (ááá2-shotááá) ( james ) 11-month-old charlie gard has a rare disease that doctors say is untreatable and they plan on taking him off life support this week.( terisa ) this comes despite efforts of

help... from two of the most powerful men in the world. john lorinc has the story. charlie gard turned 11 months old yesterday. and the infant, suffering from a rare genetic condition, is fighting for his life. these tubes are keeping him alive. chris gard/father: "he's a little trooper and a little fighter, and he's still fighting out there." charlie was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease shortly after birth and doctors say his brain damage is irreversible. they are calling for charlie's life support to be shut off. but not everyone agrees with that decision. nat sound: "we're still fighting! we're still fighting! save charlie gard save charlie gard!" pope francis said charlie's parents should be able to "treat their child until the end." and on tuesday, a pediatric hospital in the vatican offered to take charlie into its care. however, the london hospital told vatican officials, they're not able to legally transfer the child.

president donald trump has also offered his sympathies...saying "if we can help little charlie gard as per our friends in the u.k. and the pope, we would be delighted to do so." charlie's parents would like to have their son released to them, so that they can try an experimental treatment in the u.s. but a court ruled against them, saying there's no chance of charlie's health improving chris gard/father: "our parental rights have been stripped away, we can't even take our own son home to die, we've been denied that, d'you not think we've been put through enough." charlie's life support is expected to be turned off on friday. i'm john lorinc reporting. two capitol state police officers are honored for stopping the ballpark ambush that left a congressman and five others injured. u-s capitol police special agent david bailey and crystal griner were recognized yesterday. they received the law enforcement commendation medal from the d-c society of the sons of the american revolution. bailey and griner were both injured during the shooting last month in virgina in which

louisiana congressman steve scalise and five others were wounded. ( terisa ) congressman scalise remains in the hospital this morning. he is recovering from the injuries he suffered in the shooting. ( james ) there is a new plan in the works to expand one of the biggest reservoirs in the east bay. water agencies want to raise the dam at los vaqueros reservoir from 55-feet to 273-feet. it would nearly double the capacity to serve about one-point-four million customers. but the project is expected to cost 800- million dollars. the contra costa water district is going to hold public meetings

over the proposal. ( james ) a family in florida was attacked by a group of wild monkeys --- and it was all caught on camera. it starts off seeming like fun -- with monkeys just sitting around - but the situation quickly gets out of hand.( james ) it happened during the family's visit to a park. the monkeys get angry. then they start to growl and hiss -- and eventually chase the family. no one was hurt - and the boy who took the video thought it was pretty funny. but those monkeys have sharp fangs and

they can seriously hurt people. to find his house had been ransacked by an unexpected visitor...a bear. the bear was caught on surveillance video breaking into the home on monday night. the animal trashed the kitchen, went through some bed-rooms and busted a door. this isn't the first time this bear has broken into a home. that same bear was seen recently rummaging through a garage near-by. park and wildlife officials found the bear and decided to euthanize it. investigators say the bear was able to get into the home after one of the windows was left slightly open.
