fireworks accident: "they had already tried to light the fireworks but it was a dud, so the wick was smaller and they couldn't drop it down the tube so when they lit it and threw it, it blew up 2 or 3 feet away from their hand">javon says it was a powerful explosionricardo myers recorded the cellphone videosafe and sane fireworks are legal in the city of newark. however newark police say that the victim was injured using illegal fireworks. police say the message here is...? did you learn that lesson?

accident: "yeah">several people rushed to the help the victim who was transported to a local hospital for his injuries. in newark haaziq madyun kron4news (steve) last night, the vallejo fire department had its hands full responding to reports of illegal fireworks a grassy field off admiral callaghan lane at turner parkway caught fire. a quarter acre of land burned as a result of illegal fireworks. here are the numbers... on the fourth of july -- the city received 131 illegal fireworks related calls... more than triple the 42 reported calls last year. and, of those 131 calls -- the fire department says illegal fireworks caused 13 fires. kevin brown/vallejo fire dept.-we upped staff additional units on the night of the fourth of july specifically for that. uh, but it seems like the more we try, we're chasing our own tail. uh, there were more illegal fireworks reports this year than last year. same with the year before."(steve) despite handing out several hundred flyers reminding the public that fireworks are illegal in the city of vallejo... not everyone listened...

fortunately, the fire department says no injuries were reported as a result of the illegal fireworks. (vicki) a tour bus crash on the golden gate bridge - leaves several people injured. this happened around 1 o'clock this afternoon... on the southbound lanes of the bridge. the bus was on its way to san francisco from a local casino and was involved in a three vehicle collision. the chp says a car on the bridge was rear ended by pick up truck .. and the bus then hit the pick up. eleven people at the scene were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. all of the lanes had been cleared about a half-hour later. the circumstances of the crash remains under investigation. (vicki) a big scare today for passengers at sfo... terminal one had to be evacuated due to reports of a suspicious package. it happened around 11:45 this morning... and the entire terminal was evacuated for about an hour. the san francisco bomb squad was called in and determined that there was no threat. one passenger describes what happened inside the terminal.

police say the suspicious package may have been a forgotten carry-on bag. (steve) one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a house caught fire in berkeley. it happened just after noon at a home on claremont boulevard. firefighters say the flames caused major damage to the house's second flood and attic. all the home's occupants safely made it out. one woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation...but will be ok. the cause of the fire remains unknown.. armed robbery attempt last night in antioch... and tonight police have identified the gunman... he is 42-year-old zepp crouchet... police found his body early this morning inside a car... that was parked about a mile and a half away from where the shooting happened... officers also say they found the gun he used in the attack .... crouchet is suspected of shooting and killing the valero gas station clerk... 57-year-old mohammad ataie... during an attempted robbery. an off-duty officer saw what was going on and confronted crouchet before shooting him in the torso... police say crouchet managed to run away from the officer... and later died in the parked car... the family of the gas station clerk has set up a gofundme page to raise money for funeral expenses. the link has been posted on our website kron four dot com. .... (vicki) happening now... police are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a woman... in a home near san jose state university. we have just learned the identity of victim. she is 20- year-old myla dang from monterey county...

officers were called to a home on south 10th street - for reports of gunfire. when officers arrived they located dang suffering from a gunshot wound... she later died at the scene. police say the victim and gunman may have known each other. no description of the shooter has been released. (steve) a swat team swarmed a neighborhood in san jose this morning where someone called 911 to report a man with a gun. kron four's rob fladeboe was on the scene during the standoff... and joins us now with details on how the tense situation unfolded. (rob live) the drama began just before 10 this morning here in the burbank district, just west of the downtown area. it began when a man, said to have a gun, allegedly assaulted his father, who ran to a neighbor's house calling for help. sot deputy on blow horn ".....this is the sheriff's department...come out with your hands up...."members of the sheriff's swat team could be heard trying to coax the man from the home here on raymond avenue, where he had been holed up since deputies

learning only five of the 40 workers at the san francisco u-p-s facility where a deadly shooting happened at last month... have returned to work... this is according to a union official... police say jimmy lam shot and killed three drivers and wounded two others before killing himself in front of police back on june 14th. lam started shooting at the u-p-s drivers during a morning meeting before they went on their deliveries. the union rep says the small number of people who have returned to work comes from fear of the unknown. (steve) in new york city today -- the latest in a troubling series of attackson police officers over the past two years... a woman officer was shot and killed as she sat in a marked vehicle..(vicki) catherine heenan is here with details on the death of the 12-year-veteran...whowas also the mother of three... about the ill-fated crash? few can forget this image of asiana flight 214 slamming into the seawall at sfo and then spinning like a top nose down before coming to a stop. 3 people were killed in the july 6 2013 crash and now this newly released video has made it's way to youtube the 47 minute video taken from an airport tower camera shows the crash off in the distance, you can see the white smoke at the 34 second mark, the plane comes to a rest and you see black smoke pouring out of the airliner.but it's not for another 90 seconds, that the emergency exit evacuation slides are deployed, with the first passengers coming down at the 2:17 minute mark.the first responder arrives on scene just before the 3 minute mark and hoses start pouring

water on the flames within the next minute.the last of the passengers appear to come off of the plane before the 5 minute mark, that's when additional firetrucks begin arriving .shortly after the 6 minute mark you see what could be emergency responders going back up the slide and into the plane.the national transportation safety board ruled the crash was due to pilot error, flying too low and too slow and relying too heavily on automation.sotthis is as shocking as the first time we saw itcapt. laura einsetler is a commercial airline pilot for a major u.s. carrier. while the f.a.a. says it "did not adopt any new regs for us carriers as a

broke out at about 5:30 last night but deputies managed to quickly control it. all of the teens were cited for fighting, one was also cited for resisting arrest and another was cited for hitting an officer. they were later released to their parents. no serious was seriously injured... (vicki) a home in the east bay - vandalized and now police are searching for the suspects... rick hirsch walked out of his home in the rockridge district of oakland this morning only to find that he and his family were subjected to anti semitic graffiti... the word "jew" was scrawled on his trash can. as the father of two he was concerned about the effect on the neighborhood children as well as his own. he feels the current political climate has contributed to this kind display of hatred.

(vicki) firefighters joined forces with the marin county hazardous materials team to clean up a chemical spill in novato. a person walking a dog on fernando drive smelled a strong odor around a vehicle four this morningand called 911. once firefighters arrivedthey found a chemical spill inside the vehicleand called the county hazmat team for back-up. after testing the material hazmat officials determined the chemical in question was hycrochloric acid. they removed the acid and disposed of it. not one was hurt. (steve) the san francisco superior court is going through budget cuts... they will be furloughing

staff and reducing the clerk office staff to close the five-point-three million dollar deficit... the announcment was made today by court officials... they say beginning august fourth... court staff will be furloughed without pay one friday per month through june 29, 2018. and every friday, beginning september first, all clerks' offices will only be open from 8:30 in the morning until one in the afternoon. the furlough is due to a nine- percent cut in the court's state funding allocation for the fiscal year that began on july first... one that was damaged by storms back in february will reopen later this summer. the pfeiffer canyon bridge in big sur had to be completely torn down. crews are busy this morning working on rebuilding that bridge. pieces of the new steele bridge are being made in vallejo. right now they are getting ready to be taken down to big sur where they will be put in place. crews still have a long way to go but they say they are confident that the bridge will reopen in september. (vicki) tonight we are learning a player from the san jose earthquakes soccer team is in critical but stable condition tonight... after he almost drowned in lake tahoe... matheus silva was swimming on the fourth of july when he had to be rescued. the 20-year-old was resuscitated was taken to a nearby hospital... he was later flown to a hospital in reno...where he is in critical but stable condition... silva is a midfielder for the earthquakes. (steve) in the south bay. a woman openend fire right outside a busy warehouse storeinjuring a mannow police say they've arrested the shooter. it happened around 12:30 p.m. at the parking lot of costco on almaden expressway in san jose. there police found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital for injuries not considered life- threatening. a woman was arrested at the scene without

incident and booked into the county jail. police recovered a gun from the suspect and will book it as evidence. (vicki) a man could face child endangerment charges after three children were seriously injured during a fireworks related explosion. this happened last night in san bernardino. police say the three boys, ages 8, 9 and ten... were injured when an aerosal can exploded. one boy is listed in critical condition - and police say he could potentially lose some of his fingers. one of the boys mother is showing these photos of her son - as a reminder to others of just how dangerous fireworks can be. "...lost his life" police say the three boys live in the same neighborhood and their parents were nearby when the explosion occurred. officers took one of the boys stepfather into custody for questioning.. he was later released. however, the district attorney's office is now considering filing child endangerment charges. is video of the area being set up for what contra costa county is calling mission reunite.the animal services department will have booths set up outside their offices where people can check in and locate their lost pets or file a report that their pet is missing.every year after the 4th, contra costa co. animal services is inundated with lost pets and calls about lost pets who were frightened by the fireworks and took off from their surroundings.one booth will be for lost pets and the other booth will be for pets who were found.they will also be offering tips to help people find their pet... for example recovery techniques.stefanie buzzard/contra costa co animal services."for example cats, often times indoor only cats, when they get out they will usually be within a 5 mile house radius of their home. they don't travel very far whereas dogs sometimes when they get loose they tend to run and travel outside city limits. so we have some resources for people who have lost dogs as well."(oncam) since people started setting off fireworks this weekend... animal services here in contra costa county started seeing an increase in animals so far they've received 146 animals. reporting lin martinez, lydia pantazes kron4 news.

(steve) a colorado man woke up to find his house had been ransacked by an unexpected visitor...a bear. the bear was caught on surveillance video breaking into the home on monday night. the animal trashed the kitchen, went through some bed-rooms and busted a door. this isn't the first time this bear has broken into a home. that same bear was seen recently rummaging through a garage near-by. park and wildlife officials found the bear and decided to euthanize it. this... north carolina police officers took a moment to cool down at a neighborhood fourth of july celebration. a group of people built this huge slip 'n slide for kids and adults to enjoy. some neighbors contacted police to complain about it blocking off a portion of road. when police arrived, they ended up joining in on the fun! police told the group that since vehicles could still safely get by... they would not issue any citations. we'll be right back after the break.

( steve ) kron 4 checked with other bay area communities to see what problems illegal fireworks caused last night. the contra costa county fire department says it received more than 100 calls last night... but that is down from last year. marin county says it had 12 complaints about fireworks... but the sheriff's department may have more. morgan hill police did make some bust. the department says it cited 20 people for various violations. over the past several weeks leading up to the fourth of july we saw several large busts with authorities seizing hundreds of pounds of illegal explosives. the san mateo fire department says it did not any fires caused by fireworks. fingers...while using illegal fireworks in the city of newark it happened around 10:45 last night on port sailwood drive...during a neighborhood fourth of july party. police say it happened when he was lighting a highly explosive firework. even though safe and sane fireworks are actually legal in newark, police still had to respond to more than 100 fireworks- related calls. they also confiscated three-barrels full of illegal fireworks. the incident on port sailwood drive was the only injury.

(steve) happening now. the contra costa county animal services is working to reunite pets that ran away during last night's fireworks. every year after the fourth contra costa county services is overwhelmed with lost pets and calls about missing cats and dogs. nearly 150 pets have been taken in since the weekend. officials say loud fireworks are behind the majority of lost animals. the animal services currently have boths set up outside their offices where people can check in and locate their lost pets. this 47 minute video released on youtube, shows asiana flight 214 crashing into the seawall and then spinning like top before coming to rest. the video, shot from one of the cameras on sfo's tower gives second by second details of the aftermath of the july 6, 2013 crash. for example at the 34 second mark, the plane comes to a rest and you see black smoke pouring out of the airliner.but it's not for another 90 seconds, that the emergency exit evacuation slides are deployed, with the first passengers coming down at the 2:17 minute mark.the first responder arrives on scene just before the 3 minute mark and hoses start pouring water on the flames within the next minute.the last of the passengers appear to come off of the plane before the 5 minute mark, that's when additional firetrucks begin arriving .shortly after the 6

police actions don't always end peacefully - but this one did. and that's fine with the residents of one south bay neighborhood who got a reverse 911 call this morning urging them to shelter in place.
