the alta waverly development at 2302 valdez in oakland came in at 4:30 friday morning. although crews made it to the scene within 5 minutes, the smoke soon turned into a monsterous blaze. look - you can see the fire from this over head shot - miles away. while oakland fire fighters moved quickly to deal with the massive flames - a major concern evolved - the large crane next to the site - posing a serious threat to lives below. darrin white, interim oakland fire chief " we had to evacuate because of radient heat and the crane spinning and appearing to be unstable. everyone evacuated within a few blocks of area. a shelter set up here at the catholic cathedral nearby by housed at least 100 people - others evacuated waited out on the street. "i saw the flames, it was scary." three hours after the fire erupted, crews had the flames beat down, but hot spots continued to smolder and pose a hazard. this is an infra red picture taken - early friday afternoon revealing the challenges fire

fighters still needed to address. see that - black dot hovering above the construction site, the alameda county sheriff's department flew their drone to gather intel. one issue, burning on many minds - how did this fire start? it comes on the heels of 3 other arson related construction fires in the area where they were building apartments. fire officials say inspectors need a closer look to ascertain the origin in this fire - the mayor had a stern message. libby schaff, oakland mayor we take these things seriously and will find and investigate. terisa estacio. this was supposed to be multi- use building with nearly 196 apartment homes and retail space at the bottom. it was scheduled to open in 2018. the damages, still being counted, but in the millions according to sources.

(vicki) now, we continue our team coverage of today s massive construction fire in oakland... kron four's dan kerman has been checking on the people who were forced from their homes before dawn... but let's go first to kron four's spencer blake who is live at the scene tonight. spencer... what is the latest word on the fire investigation? (spencer)officials say a fire is out after destroying an oakland construction site. no injuries were reported. firefighters remained on the scene friday to control hot spots.at least 700 residents were evacuated from buildings near the site and many will spend the night in a nearby emergency shelter near lake merritt.the fire began early friday, forcing the evacuations and sending flames high into the air.the cause of the fire remains under investigation.the building was designed to include apartments and retail space.

"crane operators feel that it's pretty stable at this point. right now they will be here through the weekend also to work to clear the area."

(steve) we now have more information about that building that caught fire this morning in oakland. it's owned by wood partners, a national real estate developer. these are photos of what the building was supposed to look like when completed. called alta wavery.... it was designed be a 196-unit apartment building as terisa told us earlier. it would have also included 31-thousand square feet of retail space. the developers expected to have construction completed in 2018 (steve) wood partners released a statement regardnig today's fire at their building. the company first thanked all those who helped fight the

fire... saying, "their rapid and heroic response ensured no injuries were sustained and that nearby buildings were safely evacuated. our deepest concern goes out to those impacted by this unfortunate event. the c-e-o added: "we are grateful that no injuries were sustained and we are working closely with local fire officials and investigators to identify the cause of the fire." (vicki) though no one lived in the burned building.. the fire was intense enough to force evacuations in the area. as we said.. hundreds were awakened in the emergency... and neighboring businesses were affected too. let's check in now with kron 4's dan kerman.. who has been looking at the impact this massive fire has had on the neighborhod.

service mail carrier is rushed to the hospital.. after she was shot in the hip. this happened around 12:15 this afternoon... near the corner of bancroft and avenal avenues. police say the mail carrier was delivering mail when she was shot. according to a u-s postal spokesman, the shooting does not appear to be targeted. the woman had been working out of the eastmont post office and had been with the company since april. she is listed in stable condition. police have not yet released a description on a gunman. the postal service says its now offering a 50-thousand dollar reward for information lead to an arrest. (steve) fire crews in san francisco were busy this afternoon working to put out a grass fire. this happened around 1:30 at the crocker amazon playground. at one point john mclaren school was told to shelter in place... which has since been lifted. the fire burned about 23 acres and the fire department says it is now under control. no structures were burned and no one was injured... fire crews will remain on scene to make sure the fire does not reignite. the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

(vicki) another big story we are tracking tonight... no pleas were entered today by the two men being charged in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. the plea hearing was postponed for derick almena and max harris who made brief court appearances with their attorneys before returning to jail.... a place their lawyers believe neither of clients belong... kron4's haaziq madyun has the story the two defendants in the deadly ghostship warehouse fire case will remain in custody for now. max harris and derick almena each face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter... in connection with the deadly structure fire in oakland. both need a millions to make bail. however the attornies for men say they think reducing the bail amounts to zero is in order. in fact defense attorney curtis briggs says max harris, the man who hosted the ghost ship event last december... shouldn't be in jail at all

flight risk. he is a member of this community and has no resources to flee">attorney tony serra says the same goes for his client, the building's manager derick almenamary alexander represents 31 of the 36 families involved in the civil law suit. she believes the two men are right where they belongharris and almena will have to continue waiting behind bars until august 4th. that is when they will return to court for a bail hearing and to enter their pleas...in oakland haaziq madyun kron4news

(vicki) as we've been reporting....a massive fire destroys apartments and retail space that were under construction in oakland this morning... and tonight the arson team is investigating... here is what we know right now... the fire broke out around 4:30 this morning on valdez street... hundreds of people who live near the site have been forced to evacuate... and as of right now we don't know when they will be allowed to return back home... so far no injures have been reported.. the building that burned was set to be seven stories tall and feature 196 apartments and some store fronts.. it was slated for completion next spring.. (steve) happening now... a popular park in the south bay has closed a couple of trails in the wake of multiple mountain lion sightings in recent days.

(vicki) the decision comes just before the weekend ... and with good weather... a lot visitors might face disappointment. we go live now to kron four's rob fladeboe who has the latest on the story.rob? visitors here to the steep, rugged terrain of alum rock park report seeing mountain lions from time to time but there have been several sightings now in the past few days. that's unusual. so rangers have closed two trails, temporarily, just in case. at least two visitors reported seeing a mountain lion about a quarter mile up the one way road trail, which is now closed. this is video of that

(vicki ) with meterologist lawrence karnow. lawrence karnow: it was another hot day inland today with highs in the 100s. it is looking mostly clear tonight as high pressure sits overhead. if we do see fog it will only be very patchy at the coast. you can see on the satellite picture the big ridge building out of the desert southwest and bringing the hot air back into california. there's even some monsoonal moisture and showers in the southern sierra and desert. that ridge will weaken slightly over the weekend to slowly cool temperatures.

(vicki) we are following breaking news out of butte county. firefighters are battling a fast moving grass fire. the fire sparked this afternoon near the community of bangor. a large plume of smoke could been seen from sacramento. these are live aerials. flames have scorched about 200 acres. officials report that some residents are being evacuated because of the fire... but there is no word on how many homes are involved. the fire is zero-percent contained. (steve) the eyes of the world were on the g-20 summit in germany today. where president trump and russian president vladimir putin sat down for a high-stakes... and even higher-profile meeting lasting much longer than expected. oakland is blocking off streets surrounding a burned building site until crews can take down a giant construction crane hanging over the neighborhood.friday's early morning fire destroyed the seven-story building site but there were no injuries.oakland fire battalion chief erik logan says traffic and residents are temporarily blocked from the area as a precaution.logan says crews will work over the weekend to secure and take down the untethered construction crane that authorities fear could collapse.crews will also demolish burned scaffolding hanging over the site.logan says fire investigators will enter the site after it is safe.at least 10 evacuated residents are staying at an emergency shelter. others have gone to family and friends. "one of the things that we look at that's been very troublesome with this fire is that we are now delayed with getting 139 units of very much needed housing in the broadway valdez corridor."

(steve) the winters fire burning in yolo county has now burned at least 18-hundred acres.. mandatory evacuations are in place for some of the area.. hwy 128 near lake berryessa dam and pleasant valley road are closed.. cal fire says 25-percent of the fire is contained with about 600 personnel fighting it. crews are facing challenges with the dense vegetation and high temperatures.. (steve) another fast moving fire that started yesterday in suisun city destroyed an office and a pro shop at a sports complex...but has been put out. the fire started around four - thursday afternoon. this is video of some of the damage. winds blew embers into nearby backyards where some houses and fences suffered minor damage. it also burned about 20 acres of travis air

this to happen. sharena thomas/visitor- "there is no real weapon against somebody that got a gun and wants your stuff, so i , i would just like freely just give it up because it's not worth your life." the suspect is described as an thin african american man in his mid twenties to thirties with dreadlocks, last seen wearing all black. he was gone by the time police responded to the area... in part, because the victim waited about 40 minutes to report the crime. (vicki) a florida man was in federal court today....accused of assaulting a flight attendant last night on a flight from seattle to beijing....(steve) catherine heenan is here with more on the drama in mid-air....that includedwine bottles being broken over the man's head... china....ended up being brought back to seattle....after what some describe as an unprovoked attackon a flight attendant.. it happened about 45 minutes into the delta flight..a 23-year-old man named joseph hudek was in first class....and is accused of injuringa flight attendant. some passengers say it happened after the man tried opening an exit door on the plane.one person - who was also in first class - didn't want his face on camera - but said hetried to help restrain the man. voice of passenger - he was going back and forth to the bathroom. then he began going to the exit door. they broke two bottles of wine over his head. then i tried to choke him but he threw me off like a rag doll. dustin jones - passenger - we could see there was a scuffle going on. the flight attendants ran around and said there was a code three, a serious fight going on. britteny gardner - and one of the people working, you could see blood on their shirt. both the man and a flight attendant were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. you're looking at a photo someone tweeted....showing the mess by the exit door the man

story since it broke at 4 thirty this morning. live coverage of the blaze that forced the evacuations of hundreds. coming up at six.. we take a closer look at why some are seeing this disaster as suspicious. there have been recent silmilar fires in the area... all in buildings designed to be apartments in an area where housing is a premium. that story coming up at six. (vicki) repairs are finally coming to the city of moraga...crews will fix a 96-inch massive sinkhole that popped up on rheem boulevard near center street last march... you're looking at video from last year of crews assessing the damage. the repairs will start on monday july 10th until october seventh. during this time, the two-lane section of rheem boulevard at center street, near moraga road, will be closed to all traffic while the sinkhole is being repaired. signs will be posted to let people in the area know... a detour has been set up on rheem boulevard towards glorietta boulevard and moraga

( steve ) a huge construction fire rips through a building in the heart of oakland... forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. it burned for hours and kindled memories several recent similar fires in the east bay. building site until crews can take down a giant construction crane hanging over the neighborhood.friday's early morning fire destroyed the seven-story building site but there were no injuries.oakland fire battalion chief erik logan says traffic and residents are temporarily blocked from the area as a precaution.logan says crews will work over the weekend to secure and take down the untethered construction crane that authorities fear could collapse.crews will also demolish burned scaffolding hanging over the site.logan says fire investigators will enter the site after it is safe.at least 10 evacuated residents are staying at an emergency shelter. others have gone to family and friends.

shows the intensity of this fire. one look at the whole building just appears to be a ball of flames on the top with smoke billowing into the sky. at seven stories tall.. there was plenty of fuel to feed this fire. it was intense enough to cause part of the structure to collapse. ( steve ) this fire took off in a matter of minutes... and that's with the rapid response from fire crews.( catherine ) from there... things escalated quickly - as firefighters realized they were up against a monster. kron four's terisa estacio walks us through what happened right after the first call came in.

first time we have heard of a suspicious fire tearing through a construction site in this area. on halloween of last year... an apartment complex just to the east of lake merritt in oakland.went up in flames. the a-t-f came in to investigate but the cause has yet to be pinned down. no one was hurt in the fire... but it did wipeout the 41-unit complex. the damage was put at one million dollars. ( catherine ) some apartments under construction in emeryville have been hit by fire not once.. but twice. the first fire erupted in july of last year... like today's blaze, this one began early in the morning and spread through the building and to a neighboring auto yard... the developer says at the time, the project was about 60-percent complete. investigators earlier this year ruled the fire as an arson. they're offering a 50-thousand dollar reward for information leading to an arrest. ( catherine ) the same building site burned again this past may. again - the fire began early in the morning and the flames could be seen for miles. the

fire damaged a crane... causing it to partially collapse. no one was hurt but investigators quickly determined that this is yet another case of arson. a suspect was seen at the site shortly before the fire began. a 50-thousand dollar reward is also being offered in this case. lawrence karnow: it was another hot day inland today with highs in the 100s. it is looking mostly clear tonight as high pressure sits overhead. if we do see fog it will only be very patchy at the coast. you can see on the satellite picture the big ridge building out of the desert southwest and bringing the hot air back into california. there's even some monsoonal moisture and showers in the sierra and desert. that ridge will weaken slightly over the weekend to slowly cool temperatures. it will remain hot in the central valley with highs well over 100 there. there will be 80s in los angeles and san diego. beautiful in lake tahoe too with mostly sunny skies temperatures in the upper 80s. you can see a few patches of fog trying to form near the coast on our forecast model but it should otherwise remain clear. highs tomorrow will still be in the 90's to low 100s well inland tomorrow, 70s and 80s bay, and 60s at temperatures near normal by monday with mainly in the 80s. fog will increase through the first of the warmer weather returns late next week. (catherine) a mail carrier is in the hospital tonight after being shot while she was delivering mail in east oakland .. there's now a 50 thousand dollar reward being offered for information leading to an arrest. the victim was in her mail truck on the corner of bancroft and avenal avenues when police say she got caught in the crossfire and was shot in the hip. she was rushed to the hospital and is expected to be okay. officers don't think she was specifically targeted...but they're not explaining why.... or who was behind the gunfire. they're hoping for leads on the suspect....

(steve /on cam)no pleas were entered today by the two men being charged in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire.the plea hearing was postponed for max harris and derick almena. the two man are each facing 36- counts of involuntary manslaughter for last december's deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. a civil rights attorney representing the victims families wants one other person connected to the oakland building held responsible for the lives lost in the fire for now max harris and derick almena are the only defendants

cerritos community park is busy with kids running around... without a care in the world. so, hearing about an alleged armed robbery here troubles visitors.sharena thomas/visitor- "it's very alarming."jesse pacheco/visitor - "we are very concerned." brett hypolite/visitor- "it obviously affects us, because we're here everyday using the park." the victim is a woman, who tells fremont police that just after 10-30 tuesday night... a thin african american man with dreadlocks in his mid twenties to thirties, wearing all black... pointed a handgun in the woman's face, and took her phone and purse.sharena thomas/visitor- "it's scary because if a person rob in the nighttime, they can rob in the daytime." technically, this park closes at ten o'clock every night... but that doesn't stop visitors from showing up after hours. jesse pacheco/visitor- "it's dark, its no lights or nothing here, so people should stay away." police say the gunman took off on foot shortly after the robbery. the victim was not injuried. still, brett hypolite considers this a crime of opportunity.brett hypolite/visitor- "a lot of times we do get people that pass through because of the 880 corridor." neighbors

say although its not uncommon to see couples walking the park at night... visiting alone is not advised.brett hypolite/visitor- "it's to be expected to some degree. uh, you just don't expect it to happen in your neighborhood." at this time, investigators are still looking for the gunman. in fremont, philippe djegal, kron four news. (catherine) california firefighters are struggling with blistering heat in much of the state...as theywork to corral wildfires... one of them is near the yolo county community of winters -- which is west of sacramento. it's about 3 square miles and at last word fire crews have it roughly 25 percent contained. it's along highway 128 and some road closures are still in effect.. the 'winters' fire has triggered some mandatory evacuations... but authorities say this is the 4th wildfire in the area in four years...and some people are ignoring those evacuation orders.

in suisun city....a 55 acre grass fire destroyed an office and pro shop at a sports complex yesterday...and came dangerously close to homes. houses and fences in the area suffered minor damage. the fire broke out thursday afternoon on bella vista drive near the travis air base. some horses had to be moved.. the fire began in a front yard - and spread to nearby yards and open fields... neighbors say it took about 10 minutes for the fire department to get there. that fire is now out. ( anchor 2-shot)(steve) two hiking trails are off limits for the time being at alum rock park in san jose. (catherine) the concern -- a mountain lion has been spotted in the area in recent days.. kron four's rob fladeboe has the details..

rob fladeboe/san jose ".....visitors to alum rock park here in the foothills of east san jose are going to see safety advisories like this one posted here at the trail known as one way road at the old entrance off alum roack avenue and on the south rim trail.those two trails were closed on thursday after this mountain lion was captured on video by park rangers and spotted by several hikers in the area earlier in the week. mountain lion sightings are not all that rare in the rugged, heavily wooded park, but it's thought this animal might be lingering to feast on a recent deer kill or perhaps is in search of water.rangers say that sooner or later the mountain lion will retreat to more remote parts of the park. there are plenty of signs like this one posted on both trails but hikers seem to be taking the situation in stride.hiker ".....i'm not sure exactly how o might react if i ran into one but i guess i would try and stay as calm as i could...."hiker ".....they're pretty easy going as long as you don't bother them, they are a wonderful creature to see...."hiker".....we were joking around and saying that on the other side of those signs is a message that says the mountain lio s should

get outof the maximum security prison in the first place... not only that - it's the 'second' time he's done it in 12 years. 46-year-old jimmy causey is serving a life sentence for kidnapping, armed robberyand other charges... he was tracked down today in austin, texas...at a motel-6. authorities in south carolina said they had a lot of help from the texas rangers... chief mark keel/south carolina law enforcement division:they hit the hotel room at about 4:00 this morning. they caught him while he was sleeping. there was no resistance. i will tell you that he was armed with both a semi- automatic pistol and a pump shot gun. he also had additional ammunition. he had four cellphones and he had $47,654 in cash on him at the time of his arrest. it's believed that causey had lots of help in escaping earlier this week... prison officials think someone managed to drop wire cutters and at least one cell phone

( steve ) california is angry with the federal government... firing off a letter saying it is owed millions of dollars for fighting wildfires last year. the state usually helps out when fires start in national forests... there are several of course in california. the head of california's emergency services says the feds owe 18-million dollars for last year. if the government does not pay up... the state is threatening to stop responding to fires in national forests. the u-s forest service has not commented. (terisa estacio)here in oakland, a massive fire - take a look at these flames. around 430 on friday, crews got a call of smoke billowing up in the middle of an apartment complex under construction on valdez in oakland. it quickly grew bigger. a major concern a crane that started to spin - for fear it could collapse on crews or nearby residential complexes, there was a large evacuation. three hours after it started, crews got the flames out but had to deal with hot spots and that crane posing a problem all day long.

this is the fourth similar fire in oakalnd in the last few years, the others have been deemed as arson. in oakland terisa estacio kron4 news.
