(james)today will be a nice day with plenty of sunshine to enjoy. we're waking up this morning to mostly clear skies inland and patchy fog at the coast. temperatures are in the 50s. later this afternoon, those temperatures will climb to the low 90s for our warmest inland locations. it will be milder by the bay with mid 70s in the forecast. and at the coast, it will remain cool with highs only getting to the low 60s. today's highs are slightly warmer than yesterday's by about 2 to 5

(tiffany) our top story this mornig... firefighters from all over california are in mariposa county battling a relentless wildfire the detwiler fire is still burning out of control. ( james ) in just the last 24 hoursé the fast moving fire has picked up speed scorching 22 thousand additional acres. ( james ) here's where things stand this morning. the fire has grown to over 70-thousand acres. it is just ten percent contained 99 structures have been destroyed. 50 of them homes. some 15-hundred are

still in danger.(tiffany) more than three thousand firefighters from across california are battling this fire. kron 4's hermela aregawi has the latest. (hermela aregawi)residents describe it as apocalpytic. ashley braselton/evacuee: at first you think you know things are going to be fine. eh we live in the mountains. fire happens almost every year, not a big deal. once you start getting ash in your yard, you kind of think a little differently. power goes out. phone goes out. you start worrying a little bit more. amy conway/resident: to be honest this fire has been terrifying. i didn't think it would get as close as it's gotten and as many homes would be evacuated. it's not just inconvenient. it's the terror of it. you know what's going to be left when everybody goes back to their homes. who is going to have homes to go to. businesses are also suffering. downtown mariposa looking like a ghost town thursday.we spoke with people who owned the hotels there.they say they're losing thousands of dollars a day and counting.mia gloor/business owner: not

knowing where when we get here we can leave, when we're home if we can come back. we just can't. we haven't left out business and the challenges are we have empty rooms and we wish we can utilize those rooms for people that are here helping us save our town.the blaze is continuing to spread - while more than three thousand firefighters from across the state and neighboring states work 24 hours shifts to contain it.ken kremensky/verona fire dept sd: there's a lot of hot embers still burning underneath the brush there. you can see it looks green there in the bottom end but there's a lot of hot stuff underneath that can torch up and get the canopy going potentially spot across the line.so our crews are putting hose lays in and we're mopping that up real deep, a couple 2, 300 feet in so that we can secure this lower part of the line so that it's no more a threat to the town of mariposa.three hundred feet deep.that's why officials say the threat is more than meets than eye.and they'relooking at days if not weeks of work ahead of them.. (tiffany) another big story we are following this morning... oj simpson has been granted parole and will soon be released from prison. the unanimous decision by the

nevada parole board came after a lengthy hearing, where simpson apologized and said he wished this whole thing never happened. kron 4's jr stone has the details. o.j. simpson may be one step closer to freedom right now but when it comes to getting back to florida, the state where he resided before the armed robbery, it's a waiting game. waiting for approval and waiting for his sentence to commence.sot he will stay at lovelock and we will develop his release parole plan.a plan that will allow him to walk out of prison as early as october first. simpson has requested he live in florida. officials there will have 45 days to either approve or deny that request. they'll look at the reasons why the parole board here approved his release which include no prior convictions before this case, a positive record in jail, support from the victim, and family support. sot we just want him to come home we really do we want him to come home and i know in my

heart that he is very humbled. sot in the case of either a returning resident or resident family the acceptance rate as long as there is a valid plan of supervision is highthe nevada department of corrections warden was asked about keeping simpson safe for his remaining months behind bars.sot because he talked about it today in the hearing. that prisoners have a tendancy to do things for stupid reason so if someone had it out for him and wanted to jeopardize his parole.they have had nine years to do that hahahaha. (tiffany) also speaking at the hearing one of the robbery victims bruce fromong. fromong says he's known simpson for over 20 years and they are friends. he even asked for a lighter sentence during simpson's trial. during the hearing fromong made it clear that he felt simpson has more than paid the price for what

( james ) simpson also had family show up and support him - including his oldest daughter. her statement was fairly brief but emotional pleading for her father's release.

(tiffany) the cost of o-j simpson memorabilia may see a decline, due to recent news of simpson being granted parole. in the bay area you can find simpson memorabilia like some of what you see in this video taken at world's sport memorabilia in san jose. the last simpson item sold here was a jersey for 3- hundred dollars. now store owners believe simpson being in the spotlight might generate some money but not enough. ( james ) k-r-o-n-4 was at lucky's barber shop in oakland where people were watching the hearing closely. simpson could have served the entire 33-year sentence. but instead, he's getting out after nearly nine years. people at lucky's told is it was the right decision.

(tiffany) authorities say del-toro was shot and killed near his home. del-toro was pushing his 3-month old baby boy at the time. alameda county sheriff's say they are not ruling out that this case may be gang-related. the description of the gunmen or car has not been released. no arrest have been made. police are looking for a 19-year-old responsible for shooting and killing a man outside of a ice cream store. police say larry neal junior shot at a 43-year-old man outside of baskin-robbins wednesday afternoon. the victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. police say neal is considered armed and dangerous. anyone with information is advised to call pittsburg (james) coming up.. a toddler is bit by a police dog in the south bay. what the family is saying about what happened this morning.(tiffany) and... oj simpson has been granted parole after serving 9 years in prison. but how did this case compare to his 1995 trial?( james ) and after the break. a look at your weather and traffic. and here's a live look outside... san mateo bridge

(tiffany) a mountain lion was spotted in the hills behind the clark kerr campus of u-c berkeley wednesday afternoon. campus police are urging hikers to walk the trails with a partner and consider carrying a stick to ward off any big cat that comes nearby and to keep children and pets next to you. u-c berkeley police have found the carcasses of several animals that appear to have been mountain lion prey in the area. that is at the western edge of the claremont canyon reserve. (tiffany) another mountain lion was spotted yesterday afternoon in someone's backyard. it was seen on viewridge drive near laurelwood park in san mateo. the resident's backyard backs up to laurelwood park where there have been previous mountain lion sightings. the witness says the mountain lion was not aggressive.

it came out of the wooded area and then went back in. ( james ) in the south bay. a toddler is bit by a police dog as officers searched the home for a wanted felon. the girl is recovering from six stitches. (tiffany) kron 4's ella sogomonian spoke with the family who is now looking for a lawyer. pkg sot: ella sogomonian, san jose// "san jose police say they were serving a search warrant at this home on bird avenue when their police canine attacked the little girl."a san jose police dog bit and dragged 18 month old arabella onto the floor off this couch as officers say they searched for a wanted felon in the home last friday night at 9. sot: maria pena, grandmother// "she's in stress she doesn't want to eat. when she sees somebody or somebody knocks the door she says oh mom, grandma, is the dog coming again to bite me?" arabella had to get 6 stitches on her back where the dog severely bit her. sot: maria pena, grandmother// "the police and the dog that to my

( james ) the california department of public health announced there was an increase in valley fever cases in 20-16.. the new report says there were more than five thousand new cases last year. health officials say that is similar to the most recent peak in 20-11. kern county saw 22-hundred cases...the highest amount reported..

valley fever is usually caused by bacteria that infects certain types of soil then when that soil is stirred up by wind people can then breathe it in and get infected. (tiffany) controversy over whether another conservative commentator can speak at u-c berkeley may have been averted the university california is saying it is not a question of if ben shapiro will speak at the university in september but exactly when and where. berkeley officials initially said there was no room for shapiro to speak.. now they say they have found various spots for the speech. the attorney for the berkeley college republican's says the university's history

when it comes to proposed speakers does ánotá have the best track record but she is remaining optimistic. a spokesman for u-c berkeley says he is hopeful the school can make it happen. ( james ) a warning before you park your car at bart. recently there have been several car burglaries at stations across the east bay. two of the burglaries happened at this bart station in south hayward. one incident involved a car being stolen right out of the parking lot. the other crimes happened at bart stations including oakland, at the coliseum station, the bay fair station and the rockridge station. the majoritiy were auto burglaries where vehicles were parked and their windows were smashed. (tiffany) also in the east bay... a man attacked with a baseball bat. and his attacker is still on the loose. it happened tuesday night just before seven on emery street near 40th street. officers say when they arrived in the area several people ran in different directions and one man was bleeding from his head. the man was treated for a head injury and he told

police he did not know his attacker. officers are now looking for any surveillance video that may show what happened. ( james ) three c-h-p officers have been cleared of any criminal wrong doing after shooting an armed carjacking suspect on highway 101. the decision comes after a district attorney concluded that the use of lethal force was justifiable. the incident happened back on april 28th in san mateo. two cars were involved in a crash. then one driver got out of his car and pulled out a gun. when c-h-p arrived officers say they asked him to put the weapon down. that's the suspect refused to and officers fired two shots hitting the suspect. (tiffany) an east bay couple devastated after someone stole their wedding photos. the bride and groom were married early this week in san francisco. and shortly after the ceremony the camera containing a memory card with the pictures was stolen from a car.( james ) the pair is now hoping that whoever took the pictures will give them back. kron 4's

charles clifford has that story. sotit was a bit crazyon monday, enzo and giavanna acosta were married at san francisco city hall. they had a hired a photographer to take picture before and after the wedding.sotgiavanna acosta says after the ceremony we did pictures with family.but the next day, giavanna received a phone call from the photographer stating that the pictures were gone. apparently, the photographer had stopped at san francisco's presidio to use a bathroom and while she was away, someone broke into her car and stole the camera that held the acosta's photos. giavanna is devastated.sotgiavanna acosta says shocked. i didn't believe it. i cried.the couple do have a handful of photos from the ceremony that were taken by friends and family, but these pictures can't replace those professional.sotgiavanna acosta says she was the one up front and are the ones we see. the acosta's plan to reshoot the photos as best they can but they're really hoping that whoever stole the pictures will give them back.sot giavanna acosta the ask from the bottom of my hear that they return the memory cards at least so we have photos of the most special day of our lives.now, giavanna offering a 1000 dollar reward for the return of the pictures. in livermore, charles clifford kron 4 news. deal soured because the bronco was supposed to be displayed inside, not under the harsh desert sun.gilbert took the car back, stored it in a condo garage in central california- where it was hidden from the public for several more years. in june of 2016, gilbert and his associates agreed to loan the bronco to alcatraz east crime museum in pigeon forge, tennessee. since then, hundreds of thousands of tourists have been able to see for themselves, the famed white ford bronco.oh and something else... museum curators found these combs still in the glove compartment. they say they cowlings.and these items were in during the wild car chase in the summer of 1994. american flag on another person's property. overnight police released this video showing the car they are looking for. it happened near mission boulevard and pickering avenue. the homeowner says that somebody walked up to their house and burned the american flag that was hanging in their yard. police say they are looking for a light-colored... newer-model honda civic with dark-tinted rear windows. ( darya ) police in san francisco are investigating a murder. it happened last night in the city's hayes valley neighborhood. a man was stabbed and died at the scene. police have not released any other information. ( mark ) new this morning... we are learning about another attack by teenagers at an east bay bart station. tiffany mcelroy is at the breaking news desk with the details. tiffany. (tiffany) the attack happened yesterday morning at the richmond bart station. police say five or six teenagers knocked a man to the ground and started kicking him in the head. the man was taken to the hospital. there is no word on his condition this morning. when police got to the scene

they searched for the attackers but were unable to find them. the richmond police department is handling this latest investigation. this is just the latest incident of a string of crimes involving teenagers at bart stations. back in april dozens of teens rushed onto a bart train car in oakland. the mob of teens robbed and beat passengers. earlier this week the bart police chief said crime on trains and stations is on the rise. chief carlos rojas says they are working on hiring more officers to deal with the uptick of crime. back to you in the studio. . (mark) breaking news out of washington. u.s. officials say the trump administration will ban american citizens from traveling to north korea. this announcement follows the death of american student otto warmbier (warm-beer), who passed away after falling into a coma in a north korean prison. secretary of state rex tillerson is expected to announce that the use of u.s. passports to enter north korea will be illegal. the

( darya ) a toddler is recovering after being bit by a police dog in the south bay. it happened last friday night when officers were searching a home in san jose for a wanted felon. they were serving a search warrant at the home on bird avenue when the police dog attacked 18-month-old arabella. she had to get six stitches on her back where the dog bit her. arabella's grandmother says the officer needs to be held accountable. ( darya ) the san jose police department released a statement saying it was an accident. they did not say whether any disciplinary action would be

taken. the family plans to file a lawsuit. ( mark ) o-j simpson will be a free man later this year.( darya ) and as kron4's j-r stone reports, the next step is for him to get approved by officials to move back to florida. o.j. simpson may be one step closer to freedom right now but when it comes to getting back to florida, the state where he resided before the armed robbery, it's a waiting game. waiting for approval and waiting for his sentence to commence.sot he will stay at lovelock and we will develop his release parole plan.a plan that will allow him to walk out of prison as early as october first. simpson has requested he live in florida. officials there will have 45 days to either approve or deny that request. they'll look at the reasons why the parole board here approved his release which include no prior convictions before this case, a positive record in jail, support from the victim, and family support.

( darya ) and another mountain lion was spotted yesterday afternoon in san mateo. it was seen on viewridge drive near laurelwood park. that is where several other mountain lions have been spotted this year. ( mark ) an east bay couple is devastated after someone stole their wedding photos. the bride and groom were married early this week in san francisco.( darya ) and shortly after the ceremony the camera with the pictures was stolen from a car. kron 4's charles clifford has the story. sotit was a bit crazyon monday, enzo and giavanna acosta were married at san francisco city hall. they had a hired a photographer to take

( mark ) linkin park singer chester bennington is found dead in his los angeles home of an apparent suicide. police say bennington hanged himself. the singer has struggled with drugs and alcohol in the past. bennington's band...linkin park... found success in 2000 with their multi-platinum album "hybrid theory." the band was set to kick off a tour in boston next week. bennington was 41-years-old. fans say the death of bennington also struck similarities to the death of fellow rocker and close friend chris cornell, who killed himself in may. bennington died thursday on cornell's birthday. ( mark ) the department of homeland security has lifted laptop bans on flights from 10-muslim majority countries to the united states. in a statement, d-h-s officials say airlines and airports have increased security screenings and that has prompted the ban being lifted. those measures include checking electronic devices and pulling more people out of airport lines for additional screening.

shark advisories are posted on three beaches in santa barabara county after a kayaker was attacked. the kayaker says the shark grabbed his kayak and flipped it over. he says the first thing he saw coming was the sharks nose and then he saw its jaw coming right at him. and just hours earlier on a different beach... county park rangers say a paddle boarder had an encounter with an 8-foot-long great white. they say the shark knocked him into the water. people at the beach say it is a little concerning. ( darya ) a shark expert measured the bite mark in the

learning about another attack by teenagers at an east bay bart station.(darya) tiffany mcelroy is at the breaking news desk with the details. tiffany. (tiffany) the attack happened yesterday morning at the richmond bart station. police say five or six teenagers knocked a man to the ground and started kicking him in the head. he was taken to the hospital. there's still no word on his condition.. when police got to the scene they searched for the attackers but did not find them. the richmond police department is handling this investigation. this is just the latest incident of a string of crimes involving teenagers at bart stations. back in april dozens of teens rushed onto a bart train car in oakland. the mob of teens robbed and beat passengers. earlier this week the bart police chief said crime on trains and stations is on the rise. chief carlos rojas says they are working on hiring more officers to deal with the uptick of crime. back to you in the studio. . ( will ) san francisco (bcn) san francisco municipal railway subway service will be suspended on weeknights and weekends for four weeks starting this weekend to allow the testing of new light-rail vehicles, according to muni officials. testing will begin saturday, with service closed between the west portal and montgomery stations throughout the weekends through aug. 20 except for the weekend of aug. 11-13. bus shuttles will be available between embarcadero and st. francis circle all weekend and will stop on market street at stops marked with yellow half moon flags. additional shuttles will also operate between embarcadero and church at duboce during the weekends only, muni officials said. on weeknights, service between montgomery and west portal stations will stop by 9:30 p.m. bus shuttles will operate between embarcadero

( darya ) this morning police in fremont are looking for the person who burned an american flag on another person's property. overnight police released this video showing the car they are looking for. it happened near mission boulevard and pickering avenue. the homeowner says that somebody walked up to their house and burned the american flag that was hanging in their yard. police say they are looking for a light-colored... newer-model honda civic with dark-tinted rear windows. (mark) police in san francisco are investigating a murder. it happened last night in the city's hayes valley neighborhood. a man was stabbed and died at the scene. police have not released any other information. (mark) breaking news out of washington. u.s. officials say the trump administration will ban american citizens from traveling to north korea. this announcement follows the death of american student otto warmbier (warm-beer), who passed away after falling into a coma in a north korean prison. secretary of state

rex tillerson is expected to announce that the use of u.s. passports to enter north korea will be illegal. the restriction will go into effect 30 days after the ban is officially announced. (darya) a father killed while pushing his baby boy in a stroller in the east bay has now been identified. (mark) and this morning neighbors are speaking to kron4 about the moments they heard the shots fired. kron 4's phillipe djegal has the story. no name/neighbor- "he fell here. right like here. that's sad." as 29-year-old daniel del-toro's family light's candles and posts a picture of their loved one, where he passed away... a neighbor who wishes to remain private... says she heard at least three gunshots wednesday afternoon directly outside her home on willow avenue.no name/neighbor- "and, then when i looked out my

window, i seen a body. and, that's my first time ever seeing somebody bleeding." del-toro's family describes him as a fun loving stay at home dad... who loved his son dearly. the son he was pushing in a stroller when he was killed. del-toro's family also says he loved basketball and all kinds of sports.sgt. ray kelly/alco sheriff's office- "we can't classify it as a driveby at this point. we do believe there's an associated vehicle. uh, we are looking for that car." sergeant ray kelly, with the alameda county sheriff's office says... initially, the child was placed in protective custody... but has since been reunited with his mother. he was not injured. kelly says investigators are looking into del-toro's background -- any possible gang-ties -- to determine who would have wanted him dead.sgt. ray kelly/alco sheriff's office- "his child is now going to have to grow up, um, knowing that they were there when their father was killed. so, i, you know, people's past, um, in times like this, there's nothing that would justify a crime like this. so, whether he has a criminal history or not, uh, that's irrelevant." del-toro is survived by his wife and young boy who live near the scene of the crime. in hayward, philippe djegal, kron four news.

(mark) police are warning people to use caution when hiking in the hills behind u-c berkeley after a recent mountain lion sighting. the animal was seen earlier this week behind the clark kerr campus. campus police say a construction worker spotted the mountain lion. campus police say hikers should not walk alone... and keep children and small pets within close proximity. (mark) and another mountain lion was spotted yesterday afternoon in san mateo. it was seen on viewridge drive near laurelwood park. that is where several other mountain lions have been spotted this (darya) for your health... there has been an increase in valley fever cases in california. the new report from the department of public health says there were more than five thousand new cases last year. health officials say that is similar to the most recent peak in 20-11. kern county saw 22-hundred cases...the highest amount reported.. valley fever is usually caused

(mark) a federal judge is refusing to reinstate president trump's sanctuary cities order. the ruling was just made yesterday. the executive order would have cut money from cities that do not cooperate with immigration officials. the department of justice had asked the judge to reverse his previous decision to block president trump's order. it was first blocked after lawsuits were filed by san francisco and santa clara county. attorney general jeff sessions released a memo saying the executive order only applies to a small amount of money. but the judge says sessions could reverse himself, so right now the executive order remains blocked. (mark) the department of homeland security has lifted laptop bans on flights from 10-muslim majority countries to the united states. in a statement, d-h-s officials say airlines and airports have increased security screenings and that has prompted the ban being lifted. those measures include checking

(darya) a 45-foot long humback whale is rescued off the california coast. we first told you about this rescue earlier this week on the kron 4 morning news. but now we are getting our first look at video of the rescue. this happened off the coast of crescent city. this is video taken by a fisherman who helped with the rescue. the whale was tangled in fishing anchors. rescuers say the whale was having trouble raising its head above the water to breathe. it took nearly nine hours to free the whale. (darya) thousands of people were without power when a snake came into contact with a circuit breaker. this is the snake that caused the outage to more than 22- thousand customers within jacksonville, florida. surveillance video that shows

the maze to sf. ( darya ) breaking news we are following... a man is stabbed overnight in san jose. ( mark ) tiffany mcelroy is at the breaking news desk with the details. ( tiffany ) the attack happened around 2:30 this morning and the attacker is still on the loose. it happened on redbird drive near the willow glen shopping center and the almaden expressway. police say a woman stabbed a man and that woman is still on the loose.

(darya) more breaking news from overnight... two tourists are killed when a magnitude 6- point-5 earthquake hits an island off the coast of turkey. dozens of others have been injured. some of the injured are in critical condition. this is a look at the damage this morning. the quake was felt in turkey and greece. this is video of the damage. according to the u-s-g-s there have been at least 6 aftershocks of at least a 4-point-0 magnitude. the tourists killed were from turkey and sweden. (mark) in the east bay.. a man is attacked with a baseball bat... and the attacker is still on the streets. the attack happened in emeryville tuesday night on emery street near 40th street.. officers say when they arrived several people ran in different directions and one man was bleeding from his head. the man was treated for his injury and he told police he did not know his attacker. any wrong doing after shooting an armed car thief on highway 101.. the decision... comes after a district attorney found that the use of lethal force was justifiable. the incident happened back on april 28th in san mateo. two cars were involved in a crash... then one driver got out of his car and pulled out a gun. when c-h-p arrived ... officers say they asked him to put the weapon down.. when the suspect refused to they opened fire killing the ( darya ) a toddler is recovering after being bit by a police dog in the south bay. it happened last friday night when officers were searching a home in san jose for a wanted felon. they were serving a search warrant at the home on bird avenue when the police dog attacked 18-month-old arabella. she had to get six stitches on her back where the dog bit her. arabella's grandmother says the officer needs to be held accountable.

(darya) linkin park singer chester bennington is found dead in his los angeles home of an apparent suicide. police say bennington hanged himself. the singer has struggled with drugs and alcohol in the past. bennington's band...linkin park... found success in 2000 with their multi-platinum album "hybrid theory." the band was set to kick off a tour in boston next week. bennington was 41-years-old. fans say the death of bennington also struck similarities to the death of fellow rocker and close friend chris cornell, who killed himself in may. bennington died thursday on cornell's birthday. (darya) happening now... shark advisories are posted on three beaches in santa barabara county after a kayaker was attacked.(mark) the kayaker says the shark grabbed his kayak and flipped it over. he says the first thing he saw coming was the sharks nose and then he saw its jaw coming right at him. and just hours earlier on a different beach... county park rangers say a paddle boarder had an encounter with an 8-foot-long great white. they say the shark knocked him into the water. people at the beach say it is a little (mark) a shark expert measured the bite mark in the kayak and estimated the size of the shark at 11 to 13 feet. that is roughly the average size of an adult male great white shark. (darya) the couple whose plane crashed and bursted into flames on a southern california freeway have been released from the hospital. 62-year-old francis pisano and 55-year-old janan pisano crashed their small plane on interstate 4-0-5 three weeks ago in orange county. the couple suffered spinal fractures. the two were the only ones on board during the crash. no other injuries were reported. the couple say they are both grateful for an off-duty firefighter that saved them.
