(grant) moving to the east bay.... in the last 48 hours there have been two fires at two homeless encampments in oakland. and fire officials are confirming what many have noticed for a while now.(vicki) encampment fires are on the rise. but the actual number is pretty staggering. kron 4's dan kerman is live in oakland .. to explain. dan? two days and two more fires at homeless encampments in the city of oakland this bring to 60 the total number of encampment fires so far this yearsot melinda drayton/deputy chief, oakland fire dept. 10-20we're incredibly concerned, it's obviously an uptick , these fires are growing, as the encampments grow the fires grow and they are unsafe on all levels. sunday the fire was here at 5th and market, one of oaklands larger tent cities. firefighters confirm this one may have been the second fire, was monday morning at this encampment on martin luther king and west grand.

highway 680... at all costs. you may remember back in february...when kron four reported that niles canyon road was closed due to storm damage. that closure created a serious traffic problems on 680 for commuters. no word on when crews plan to reopen the road. (grant) tonight, petaluma police are trying to figure out why a car hit a womand and child. the accident was late this morning near walnut park. police were forced to close eastbound d street at fourth street. the woman and child were taken to the hospital... their conditions are unknown at time. the incident remains under investigation. (grant) in berkeley, a babysitter was sentenced to five years probation and a year in jail -- after violently mistreating a six-month-old boy last year. back in october -- 44- year-old, ingrid johana perez was charged with two counts of child abuse, one felony and one misdemeanor. the parents of the infant reported perez to police... after their video survaillance system caught the woman mistreating

their child. as part of her probation -- perez will not be allowed to take care of any minors or the elderly. the woman had worked as a nanny extensively in berkeley for more than ten years. (vicki) in castro valley there is an investigation underway after a body was found last night in anthony chabot regional park. around 6:30 police got a call from a hiker who reportedly found the body. paramedics arrived and confirmed the man was dead. the body appeared to be a white male in his 20's. police are investigating the case. (grant) santana row in san jose was shut down this morning as police investigated a shooting. just before 1 a.m., officers responded to the heart of santana row after getting reports of shots fired. police say someone shot from one apartment unit into another, but no one was hurt. just after five this morning.... police took two people into custody for questioning.one person has since been arrested. no injuries have been reported. police have not released details about the circumstances that led to the

(vicki) a man has been convicted of attempted first degree murder of two bar patrons in benicia. 34 year old daniel lopez was refused a drink after last call at a bar on military way back in november of 2016. that's when he pulled out a gun and shot two people inside the bar. one of the victims was shot in the head, both survived. lopez also was convicted of several assault charges and illegal firearms charges. lopez faces life in prison but ádoesá have the possibility of parole. a dozen facing life=threatenin g injuries.(vicki)new details tonight on the 18=wheeler used to smuggle undocumented workers in texas. (catherine) the truck driver appeared in federal court today.he's charged with illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death.that means he's facing a possible death penalty.. right now, here's what we know about the man, the truck he was driving and the victims, sixty year old james bradley junior did not speak in court today.but he told investigators he didn't know anyone was in the trailer until he parked and got out to relieve himself.after hearing voices inside, he opened the door and was knocked to the

(vicki) a scare at a san jose motel - this morning. dozens of people had to be evacuated after a hazardous material was discovered. kron four's will tran tells us what happened. 51 people at this extended stay america got the same alarm clock in the form of the fire department telling everyone that the front lobby area was pepper sprayed. (vicki) 52-vehicles were either vandalized or burglarized early friday morning in two east bay cities. the smash and grab auto burglaries began in brentwood around 4am in the parking lot of the hampton inn. police took reports of 17-vehicles that were broken-into and one white 4-door lexus reported stolen. within a half hour of the 17-auto burglaries in brentwood, the city of livermore got hit with 35- vehicles that were either vandalized or broken-into. livermore police say four- suspects were spotted driving in a white 4-door-lexus, similar to the one stolen from the hampton inn in brentwood. police in both cities suspect all 52-auto break-ins were likely committed by the same people. cars are getting closer to becoming a reality for riders. you can see what's being called the "fleet of the future" rolling into the south hayward stop this afternoon. kron4's maureen kellly went on a test drive to show us what riders can expect.possibl y as soon as this fall. bart brought members of the media on board a few of the new cars to see what they are like in action.and it started off a little bumpynatsat least we know the brakes work. it was also a good reminder for those of us with camaeras to keep one hand on the straps. in fairness, bart says the driver had to be in manual mode for this test drive so that won't be the new normal. the new pilot cars have been undergoing a lot of testing nearly 400 tests in al over the past year. and the results of those tests are resulted in bart and the manufacturer to make more than 3-thousand modifications. mostly to the software an operator part of the testing says these new cars are much more sophisticated than the old ones.they old ones are model tee's the new ones are like teslas.the first passengers to get on in september will probably notice that the there are fewer seats.and more room to stand.

- if you are a fan of game of thrones - you know all about the stark clan and its ties to direwolves. for those who don't follow, briefly, the direwolves are considered near mythical creastures in the show. a litter of pups were discovered given to the stark children - for protection. the direwolves look similar to a siberian husky, and that is where the problem has popped up. patty "i have seen numbers i uk of 700 increase." patty says here locally, they have seen a jump to 45 dogs a month. and it is difficult to care for some many abandoned dogs. patty says huskies can be tricky breed for some dog owners. (growling) patty. "they are noisey and like to talk a lot they can be intimidating." i love dogs, but even i found their noises a bit intimidating. patty says the rescue club bash started getting suspicious when the dogs they were finding at bay area shelters had names similar to the show. she says it a breed popularity tied to a tv series or movie and subsequent issue is nothing new. it has happened with 101 dalmations and beverly hills chiquaha. patty. "you need to do your research." patty has two siberian huskies of her own. she says it is vital to remember, husky's need a

lot of exercise. patty. not a walk around the block. remember these are dogs that pull sleds. they need miles of - like 7 miles of exercise a day." a san francisco animal control spokesperson says they appreciate the work of rescue groups to help them with the abandoned huskies. they say last year they had several dozen abandoned huskies, like stark and angel. as for stark, who is 8 and and angel, 11 months - they are going to a foster home. patty says bash and other rescue groups are working hard to relocate the abandoned huskies and find them good permananant homes. in sf, terisa estacio kron four news

(vicki) in sacramento county five kids were injured sunday in a boat fire on folsom lake. a state parks officer says they were taken to the hospital with second and third degree burns. the parks department believes the fire occurred just moments after the man driving the boat filled up at this gas pump. not using the boat's blower system to ventilate the engine caused the boat to catch fire. craig baker: "well it could explode, so you are supposed to run it before you turn on the ignition - you are suppose to run for like 5 minutes." (vicki) investigators say the man who caused the fire did not appear to have any boating education. (grant) authorities are investigating whether an 18-year-old woman live-streamed herself driving drunk in los banos....leading to an accident that killed her sister.(vicki)

(catherine) the 18-year-old is accused of live streaming the moment she crashed friday.... then almost casually talking to the camera about the fact her 14-year-old sister had been killed.... most of the disturbing video has been pulled from social media sites...but not before it was widely seen. at times the teenager seems to have both hands off the wheel as she rapped to music.18-year-old obdulia sanchez from stockton is charged with d-u-i and vehicular manslaughter. in the video you can hear and see the moments leading to the crash... she later says in part ' i killed my sister - ok. i know i'm going to jail for life.' she later added that she 'didn't care.' instagram video - car noise. then teen says i killed my sister - ok? i know i'm going to jail for life, alright. c-h-p officer - when people have been drinking and they're under the influence of drugs or alcohol or a combination, they may do things they won't normally do. like getting on

(grant) a 53-year-old woman was arrested after an alleged drunk driving crash left one of her passengers dead and another injured on saturday night. vera shpilman of palo alto was arrested following the crash that happened just before 11 on el camino real. when officers arrived at the scene they found two vehicles that had crashed. there were two injured passengers in one of the cars who had to be extricated. one of those

a child infected at birth has survived years without needing treatment..(grant) catherine heenan is here with details of the announcement made at an international aids conference in paris.. (catherine) the nine year old - we don't know if it's a girl or a boy - was given a burst oftreatment shortly after birth... the results -- that child has been off drugs for eight and a half years without symptoms...or signs of active virus.. while no one is talking about a cure in the short-term.....this is being described as thefirst step toward hiv remission.....and eventually a cure. the south african child was treated with anti-viral medicine at birth....so this is considered as new hope for those born with hiv. and evidence that treating babies early may prevent them from having to take hiv drugs for life. scientists say there are two similar cases. one in the u.s. and one in france. grant and vicki?

(vicki) check your pantry if you just bought some canned foods recently bush brothers is recalling some of its beans.s the recall impacts the brown sugar hickory, country style and the original baked beans. these beans were recalled because the seam on the side of the cans might be defective. bush brothers is blaming one of its can suppliers for the possible problem. the company says the problem has been fixed. no one has reported getting sick from the beans. (vicki) and - you may want to take a closer look at the papayas in your kitchen. the food and drug administration is urging people not to eat the caribena brand of maradol papayas. the reason? the papayas have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that's sickened at least 47 people in 12 states - not including california. at least one of the victims has died. caribena brand papayas come from mexico, are distributed in texas, and have a red, green and yellow sticker. the f-d-a is asking people to throw out the papayas in question if they have them in

firefighters are expected to remain on site for a few weeks to assess the damage.(grant) now, an app developer has designed something that may help streamline the damage assessment process. kristen hazard has created "wildnote" -- an app that helps integrate the data crews collect after fires scorch an area. hazard says the current method of collecting this data is slow... firefighters take detailed notes of the fire damage using pen and paper. this leads to delays in receiving the information. (kristen hazard/app developer): "the beauty of taking this information in an application is that once you've collected the information onto a device, you sync it onto a cloud and everybody who's out collecting the data links to the same spot on the cloud and now you have all of your data uniformly collected in a single location that then you can act on."(grant) cal fire is interested in the app but because it is a state run agency leaders in sacramento would have to give aproval.

( steve ) the first cars of bart's fleet of the future are only a few months away from being a reality for riders the trains have been undergoing rigerous testing for the past year and there are still more to do. today bart brought members of the media to take a test drive on a few of the new cars. the biggest difference is that there are fewer seats, but extra capacity for standing room. there are also three doors per car instead of two making it easier for passengers to get on and off crowded trains
