(grant) in berkeley, a babysitter was sentenced to five years probation and a year in jail -- after violently mistreating a six-month-old boy last year. back in october -- 44- year-old, ingrid johana perez was charged with two counts of child abuse, one felony and one misdemeanor. the parents of the infant reported perez to police... after their video survaillance system caught the woman mistreating

their child. as part of her probation -- perez will not be allowed to take care of any minors or the elderly. the woman had worked as a nanny extensively in berkeley for more than ten years. (vicki) in castro valley there is an investigation underway after a body was found last night in anthony chabot regional park. around 6:30 police got a call from a hiker who reportedly found the body. paramedics arrived and confirmed the man was dead. the body appeared to be a white male in his 20's. police are investigating the case. (grant) santana row in san jose was shut down this morning as police investigated a shooting. just before 1 a.m., officers responded to the heart of santana row after getting reports of shots fired. police say someone shot from one apartment unit into another, but no one was hurt. just after five this morning.... police took two people into custody for questioning.one person has since been arrested. no injuries have been reported. police have not released details about the circumstances that led to the

shooting. (vicki) a man has been convicted of attempted first degree murder of two bar patrons in benicia. 34 year old daniel lopez was refused a drink after last call at a bar on military way back in november of 2016. that's when he pulled out a gun and shot two people inside the bar. one of the victims was shot in the head, both survived. lopez also was convicted of several assault charges and illegal firearms charges. lopez faces life in prison but ádoesá have the possibility of parole. (catherine) the truck driver appeared in federal court today.he's charged with illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death.that means he's facing a possible death penalty.. right now, here's what we know about the man, the truck he was driving and the victims, sixty year old james bradley junior did not speak in court today.but he told investigators he didn't know anyone was in the trailer until he parked and got out to relieve himself.after hearing voices inside, he opened the door and was knocked to the

ground by a rush of what he called spanish people.he did not call 9=1=1 even though he knew there was at least one dead body in the trailer. bradley had been hired by an iowa trucking company to deliver the big rig to its new owner in brownsville, texas. for a reasons still unexplained, he instead went to laredo , where he says he had the truck washed and detailed.then he headed north again to san antonio.again, no explanation for that detour. the truck was discovered parked in the 100=degree plus midsummer heat.inside, the trailer was pitch-black, crammed with as many as 1=hundred people, and so suffocatingly hot that one passenger said they took turns breathing through a hole."our paramedics and firefighters found that each one of them had heart rates over about 130 beats per minute, which, again, they were very hot to the touch."the immigrants were from mexico and guatemala.four of them were younger than 18. they said they'd been smuggled

(vicki) a scare at a san jose motel - this morning. dozens of people had to be evacuated after a hazardous material was discovered. kron four's will tran tells us what happened. 51 people at this extended stay america got the same alarm clock in the form of the fire department telling everyone that the front lobby area was pepper sprayed. (unidentified motel guest- someone knocked on the door about 10 minutes before my alarm went off. i was not happy about that. didn't smell anything but was made aware that there was a chemical agent in the area and that we had to leave)the fire department sealed off the front lobby... and told everyone on the bottom floor to get out.people on the top two floors were allowed to stay... as long as they remained in their units(jimmy grossman/motel guest-i tried to walk out the front door and i got the mace all in lungs. it was definitely mace) (reporter-so it was hard to breathe and you were tearing up?)(jimmy grossman/motel guest-yeah)firefighters

(grant) but first, police are investigating a string a car break-ins in the east bay... after more than 50 vechiles are vandalized. the locations where this is happening and

who police are searching for.

(vicki) 52-vehicles were either vandalized or burglarized early friday morning in two east bay cities. the smash and grab auto burglaries began in brentwood around 4am in the parking lot of the hampton inn. police took reports of 17-vehicles that were broken-into and one white 4-door lexus reported stolen. within a half hour of the 17-auto burglaries in brentwood, the city of livermore got hit with 35- vehicles that were either vandalized or broken-into. livermore police say four- suspects were spotted driving in a white 4-door-lexus, similar to the one stolen from the hampton inn in brentwood. police in both cities suspect all 52-auto break-ins were likely committed by the same people. (grant) bart's new train

cars are getting closer to becoming a reality for riders. you can see what's being called the "fleet of the future" rolling into the south hayward stop this afternoon. kron4's maureen kellly went on a test drive to show us what riders can expect.possibl y as soon as this fall. bart brought members of the media on board a few of the new cars to see what they are like in action.and it started off a little bumpynatsat least we know the brakes work. it was also a good reminder for those of us with camaeras to keep one hand on the straps. in fairness, bart says the driver had to be in manual mode for this test drive so that won't be the new normal. the new pilot cars have been undergoing a lot of testing nearly 400 tests in al over the past year. and the results of those tests are resulted in bart and the manufacturer to make more than 3-thousand modifications. mostly to the software an operator part of the testing says these new cars are much more sophisticated than the old ones.they old ones are model tee's the new ones are like teslas.the first passengers to get on in september will probably notice that the there are fewer seats.and more room to stand.

which means the max capacity on board the new cars will go from 175 peopleto 260. bite about how there's the ride was noticibly quieter.and the upgraded ac keep the train cool despite the hot day.and the old cloth covered seats have been replaced with easier to clean vinyl. and they aren't as bulky.so there is more leg room.you're 6'5 how does it feel to sit there? wonderful.if the testing continues to go as planned 10 train cars will be headed down the bart tracks starting in septemberand a total of 35 by the end of the year. all 775 new bart cars on order are expected to be in service by 2022maureen kelly kron4 news

(estacio)ó (huskies growling - patty, they are demonstrative dogs) meet stark and angel - two huskies - being rescued from san francscio's animal shelter. on monday, i caught up with patty lacava with bay area siberian husky club. (natural sound) if the name stark rings a bell - it should

- if you are a fan of game of thrones - you know all about the stark clan and its ties to direwolves. for those who don't follow, briefly, the direwolves are considered near mythical creastures in the show. a litter of pups were discovered given to the stark children - for protection. the direwolves look similar to a siberian husky, and that is where the problem has popped up. patty "i have seen numbers i uk of 700 increase." patty says here locally, they have seen a jump to 45 dogs a month. and it is difficult to care for some many abandoned dogs. patty says huskies can be tricky breed for some dog owners. (growling) patty. "they are noisey and like to talk a lot they can be intimidating." i love dogs, but even i found their noises a bit intimidating. patty says the rescue club bash started getting suspicious when the dogs they were finding at bay area shelters had names similar to the show. she says it a breed popularity tied to a tv series or movie and subsequent issue is nothing new. it has happened with 101 dalmations and beverly hills chiquaha. patty. "you need to do your research." patty has two siberian huskies of her own. she says it is vital to remember, husky's need a

lot of exercise. patty. not a walk around the block. remember these are dogs that pull sleds. they need miles of - like 7 miles of exercise a day." a san francisco animal control spokesperson says they appreciate the work of rescue groups to help them with the abandoned huskies. they say last year they had several dozen abandoned huskies, like stark and angel. as for stark, who is 8 and and angel, 11 months - they are going to a foster home. patty says bash and other rescue groups are working hard to relocate the abandoned huskies and find them good permananant homes. in sf, terisa estacio kron four news

(vicki) in sacramento county five kids were injured sunday in a boat fire on folsom lake. a state parks officer says they were taken to the hospital with second and third degree burns. the parks department believes the fire occurred just moments after the man driving the boat filled up at this gas pump. not using the boat's blower system to ventilate the engine caused the boat to catch fire. craig baker: "well it could explode, so you are supposed to run it before you turn on the ignition - you are suppose to run for like 5 minutes." (vicki) investigators say the man who caused the fire did not appear to have any boating education. (grant) authorities are investigating whether an 18-year-old woman live-streamed herself driving drunk in los banos....leading to an accident that killed her sister.(vicki)

(catherine) the 18-year-old is accused of live streaming the moment she crashed friday.... then almost casually talking to the camera about the fact her 14-year-old sister had been killed.... most of the disturbing video has been pulled from social media sites...but not before it was widely seen. at times the teenager seems to have both hands off the wheel as she rapped to music.18-year-old obdulia sanchez from stockton is charged with d-u-i and vehicular manslaughter. in the video you can hear and see the moments leading to the crash... she later says in part ' i killed my sister - ok. i know i'm going to jail for life.' she later added that she 'didn't care.' instagram video - car noise. then teen says i killed my sister - ok? i know i'm going to jail for life, alright. c-h-p officer - when people have been drinking and they're under the influence of drugs or alcohol or a combination, they may do things they won't normally do. like getting on

(grant) a 53-year-old woman was arrested after an alleged drunk driving crash left one of her passengers dead and another injured on saturday night. vera shpilman of palo alto was arrested following the crash that happened just before 11 on el camino real. when officers arrived at the scene they found two vehicles that had crashed. there were two injured passengers in one of the cars who had to be extricated. one of those

passengers, an 80 year old woman, later died. shpilman was charged on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and dui. firefighters are expected to remain on site for a few weeks to assess the damage.(grant) now, an app developer has designed something that may help streamline the damage assessment process. kristen hazard has created "wildnote" -- an app that helps integrate the data crews collect after fires scorch an area. hazard says the current method of collecting this data is slow... firefighters take detailed notes of the fire damage using pen and paper. this leads to delays in receiving the information. east bay cities where dozens of cars were broken into. coming up we'll hear from some very upset and concerned residents.(pam) plus... new concerns tonight that fires at homeless encampments are on the rise... after two this weelend. kron 4 news at six is next.

( pam ) a shattered car window tells the story. multiple vehicles .. burglarized or vandalized in two bay area cities within a matter of hours... and police suspect the cases are all connected. good evening i'm pam moore.( steve ) and i'm steve aveson. one vehicle was stolen during the crimes.. and investigators think it was used to go from one city to the next one where the crimes kept going.

today kron4's haaziq madyun went to both cities and shows us where the crimes occurred. 17-vehicles broken into in the town of brentwood, followed by 35-vehicles either vandalized or burglarized in the city of livermore, all reported within a hours timethe auto break-ins started in the hampton inn parking lot around 4am friday. this is where brentwood police say 17-autos were targeted and one vehicle a white 1999, 4-door, lexus was stolen. a half an hour later reports of 35-more auto burglaries started coming in, this time from the tiger lily common and tiffinay common nrighborhoods in livermore he is referring to his neighbor maria perez delaveaga who is

showing me the damage done to one of her vehiclesseveral car alarms alerted sleeping neighborslivermore police say 4-suspects were spotted in the area driving a white-4-door-lexus similar to the one stolen from the hampton inn in brentwood...lic ense plate number 4jpx560. investigators in both towns say it appears the same suspects are linked to the 52-auto break-ins between the the two cities. in the livermore haaziq madyun kron4news ( steve ) this is just the latest in series of car burglaries we have seen in the east bay. three weeks ago we found police going door to door in san ramon after the bollinger hills neighborhood was hit. at least 13

vehicles were broken into in one night but the victims appeared to have taken precautions and removed anything of value. there were only two reports of items being stolen. no arrests have been made in that case. ( pam ) staying in the east bay... tonight, police are investigating yet another freeway shooting . the california highway patrol says, a prius had one of its rear windows shot out saturday night .. along northbound highway- 242. the driver told investigators, he was calling in a mercedes driving wrecklessly... and the car pulled over to the shoulder near concord avenue. he told the c-h-p, he slowed down to get a good look at the car and that's when he heard a gunshot. the driver was not hit... the mercedes then took off ( pam ) this is the latest in a series of shootings since 2015. in contra costa county alone, there have been more than 30 similar incidents .... eight of them have turned deadly. the county is racing to install surveillance cameras along the freeways.. which will cover highway- 4 and interstate- 80. the cameras will use what is

called 'shot spotter' technology... it will filter out the sounds to help pinpoint gunshots. (steve) tonight, a suspect is in custody in connection to a fatal stabbing in hayward saturday night police say it happened on happyland avenue around nine-thirty p-m. when they arrived found a found a dead man with a stab wound. the names have not been released the case remains under investigation. ( steve ) as more and more people take to living on oakland's street, the number of encampment fires is risign. (catherine) that man is james bradley junior.... who's being detained after his initial appearance today before a u.s. magistrate... he was brought to a texas courtroom handcuffed and wearing blue jail scrubs.. today the judge explained that if he's convicted, he could face the death penalty. the 10 people who died had been crammed into a sweltering hot truck which was pitch black....with no ventilation. there were as many as 100 people inside...when the truck was discovered in san antonio sunday..in a walmart parking lot. during the hearing....bradley didn't talk about what happened sunday..... but authorities say the conditions were so bad.....it's surprising others didn't die. he was in court today... there

is video of him going in. fire chief - these people in that trailer were without any signs of water. so we're looking at a lot of head stroke and a lot ofdehydration. police chief - a lot of vehicles came in and picked up a lot of the folks that were in that trailer that survived the trip. today some of the survivors being treated for heat stroke and extreme dehydration were released from the hospital. but dozens of others remain - and doctors say some of them might have irreversible brain damage. one survivor told police that they'd been told they were being charged 55-hundred dollars for the trip and the money hadn't been collected. authorities are looking for other suspects.... bradley is claiming that he thought he was simply delivering a truck, and didn't know thatpeople were inside. pam and steve? (pam) we now know the name of a teen girl killed in a car crash which occurred police say, as her older sister was live- streaming while she was driving .. it happened in los banos. police have identified the victim as 14 year old jacqueline sanchez ... she

( steve ) it was one week ago a raging wildfire near yosemite roared dangerously close to the town of mariposa. the progress being made tonight and where evacuations stand.( pam ) and the health care debate may finally be put to a vote. the final pitch today from the president to lawmakers( steve ) plus yet another grass fire in the south bay. why it wasn't the flames that was the big concern this afternoon.

(steve) a vegetation fire scorched some 10 acres of waist high grass this afternoon in east san jose. (pam) kron four's rob fladeboe was on scene ..not long after firefighters got there. i'm here on at quimby and capitol in east san jose where firefighters have been battling a vegetation fire that broke out just before 3 o'clock this afternoon. the fire appears to have started beneath a couple of large trees at the center of this very large field just south of eastridge mall. no honmes were threatened but there was a lot of smoke drifting over toward the mall and causing some issues with the traffic

santa clara county is now contained.(pam) the 'castro fire' was reported yesterday afternoon, near the intersection of castro valley road and highway 1-0-1 south of gilroy. this is an image from the gilroy fire department.. earlier this morning. crews stayed over- night to monitor conditions. no structures were threatened... and no injuries have been reported. firefighters in mariposa county are making some headway in the fast- moving wildfire that has destroyed dozens of homes.. catherine heenan is here with an update on the detwiler fire - which has burned more than 76-thousand acres... (catherine) the wildfire in mariposa county is now 50 percent contained... although it's already destroyed at least 63 homes... new numbers say that 67 other kinds of buildings have been destroyed...and at least one business. starting at 7 tonight....a meeting in the community of coulterville...where authoritieswill give families the latest details on

evacuations. a few have been allowed to return home...but hundreds of houses are stillthreatened. weather has been a problem....with temperatures reaching above 100 degrees at times with low humidity. the cause is still under investigation. the wildfire is about 35 miles west of yosemite - but the park remains open. the fire is one of more than a dozen that have ravaged california in recent weeks. pam and steve? ( steve ) the first cars of bart's fleet of the future are only a few months away from being a reality for riders the trains have been undergoing rigerous testing for the past year and there are still more to do. today bart brought members of the media to take a test drive on a few of the new cars. the biggest difference is that there are fewer seats, but extra capacity for standing room. there are also three doors per car instead of two making it easier for passengers to get on and off crowded trains

quickly. the project manager for the new fleet expects that riders will be pleased with the changes they will experience. if the continued testing goes as planned, 10 new cars will be in service in september, followed by another 25 by the end of the year. but it won't be until around mid-2022 before all the new fleet currently on order are up and running on the tracks. let's take a look outside right now for the current conditions in the bay area... (steve) new at six. chevron and the state department of occupational safety and health have reached a settement over the 2012 richmond refinery fire. the settlement calls for equipment and safety upgrades worth over $20 million dollars...and a set of safety measures to follow. those measures include the replacement of all carbon- steel piping...and specialized training for fire department personnel working at the oil giant's richmond refinery. the 20-12 fire...which triggered a widespread shelter-in-place order...injured three chevron employees and caused hundreds of residents to complain of respiratory problems.
