comes on the heels of several other distubring crimes for example.just this past tuesday, kron four exclusively brought you the story of a mother outraged about her vicously son attacked on a muni bus -and this story, you saw only on kron four, a few months ago in april, telling you about a band of teenagers violently assaulting and robbing a woman on muni.paul rose, muni spokesperson. we don't like to see these cases and we are story to hear about. paul rose is the spokesperson for the san francisco municipal transporation agency - he says 700 thousand people ride the system every day. he also says dispite these high profile cases, crime is actually going down on muni. rose. our numbers show we are doing down in crime. however, victims say it doesn't feel that way, and they are outraged about the recent assaults. other riders we spoke with say they wish the system felt safer.rider. sometimes, i wish they would do more.muni says they are working closely with the san francisco police department. a few years, the department held a sting operation to try and crack down on a gang terrorizing riders. robert rueca, "i can't share with you are tactics."sfpd did say they have increased patrols recently in an effort to try and keep riders safe.in sf, terisa estacio kron four news.

(grant) a judge has agreed to reduce the bail amount for one of the two men being charged in oakland's deadly ghost ship fire that killed 36 people.. 27-year-old max harris' new bail is now set at 750 thousand.. that's down from just over one million dollars. harris's attorney originally asked for his client to be released from jail...but the judge declined. harris and 47-year old derick almena were each charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter..

almena rented the building and prosecuters say harris helped him sublet the space in the building that was destroyed on december second. (vicki) a judge agreed to let a federal ranger testify at a trial over the fatal shooting of kate steinle by an illegal immigrant. juan francisco lopez sanchez shot and killed steinle back in 20-15 while she was walking along pier 14. the gun used in the shooting had been reported stolen from a land management ranger just days before the shooting. the shooting sparked national debate over san francisco's sanctuary city policy.. lopez-sanchez is set to return to court on tuesday. she was driving on highway 4 in pittsburg yesterday afternoon. her passenger side mirror was shattered, and the plastic covering busted off. she says it was done by a motorcycle driver who had been tailgating her while she drove in the fast lane. she thinks he was mad that she didn't move out of his way.he pulled up on the side of me again and then he had punched out here almost flipped me off and then took off about 100 in and out of traffic trying to get away the victim called the chp hoping that they can use the cameras installed on highway 4 to catch the person who did this she says the response she got from the officer who responded frustratinghe said basically the cameras that are installed our plate readers only so will flag it if a car stolen and that's the only pointhe said no there was nothing he could do. i can report it to my insurance company or pay out of pocket since the damage will probably be less than her deductible, she decided not to file a report and instead called kron4.down why can't there be justice?the pio at the contra costa chp office was out and i was referred to the da's office.i explained the victim's situation to senior deputy attorney mary knox.she

says there are both liscense plate readers and cameras on highway 4 in pittburg that are monitored by pittsbugh pd. it's a system that is working to combat crime and is expected to be expanded and enhanced starting this year. in the future what's being called a freeway safety network will go from highway 80 in richmond to highway 4 in antioch. the deputy da said her advice to the victim, would be to call the chp again and this time file a report. she can then request that the chp follow up with pittsburg pd to review their footage to see if he was caught on camera. she says it's possible the chp officer who responded was simply uninformed of what pittsburg pd's recently installed camera system is capable of.maureen kelly kron4 news. (rob live) this dumpster here on palo alto avenue was set ablaze about 4:30 this morning. it's was the second of four fires, all of which are considered suspicious and investigators are calling on the public to help them catch the guilty party. just after 2 a.m. friday firefighters were called to the scene of a fully engulfed vehicle fire here in the caltrain parking lot on urban lane. then about 4:30, another call came in from the 100 block of palo alto avenue, about two blocks away, where firefighters quickly doused a fire in a fully-loaded dumpster. an hour later, a third fire was reported, again in a dumpster, this one located inside a parking garage on high street. and even as they were headed to the parking garage, a 4th fire

14-year-old sister, jacqueline, was thrown from the vehicle and died. sanchez's father spoke on her behalf in court.obdulia sanchez has pleaded not guilty to charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving. the f-b-i has charged a man with killing his wife on board a cruise ship in alaska. and police say the motive was because she was laughing at him. kristy manzanares was found dead in her blood splattered cabin tuesday night on board the emerald princess. manzanares was a mom who worked as a real estate agent in utah. thousands of passangers were not able to get off the ship while police investigated. kenneth manzanares reportedly confessed that he killed his wife because she wouldn't stop laughing at him. six in california.... -- (vicki) we are learning new details tonight about the hawaiian high-rise fire that killed three people... documents show the honolulu apartments didn't update fire alarms to meet safety standards. city records show no upgrades were made after an engineering firm recommended certain upgrades for the 36-story building after another fire four years ago. the firm found the fire alarms didn't meet city fire code because they weren't loud enough and didn't have flashing lights and recommended replacing the system. but the building wasn't required to meet the standards because they weren't part of the fire code when it was built in 1971, so property managers broke no laws. wells fargo is paying 80 million dollars to customers who were charged for auto insurance that they did not want or need. the bank said today that just under 600 thousand customers were affected and will be getting refunds.like most auto loan

looking at someone who palo police say .... is a "person of interest,"in a suspected arson case. good evening.. im pam moore(grant) i'm grant lodes .. steve is off tonight.(2-shot/grant ) four fires in four hours within a couple of blocks early this morningin downtown palo alto.(2-shot/pam) kron four's rob fladeboe brings you up to date on the case. just after 2 a.m. friday firefighters were called to the scene of a fully engulfed vehicle fire here in the caltrain parking lot on urban lane. then about 4:30, another call came in from the 100 block of palo alto avenue, about two blocks away, where firefighters quickly doused a fire in a fully-loaded dumpster. an hour later, a third fire was reported, again in a dumpster, this one located inside a parking garage on high street. and even as they were headed to the parking garage, a 4th fire was reported in some brush along side the bike path just south of the homer avenue tunnel. palo alto police lt.

speeding through traffic-- kicking, punching and smashing mirrors near orinda. thanks to the eye in the sky, the rider led officers right to his house and he was busted. he faces charges of reckless driving and vandalism. the motorcycle... was impounded. ( grant ) a woman is assaulted on a muni bus - attacked as she tried to call 911 for help. police say they are working with muni to get surveillance video from the bus. the victim was 30 years old and the suspects are a group of women between the ages of 19-21. a spokesperson with the san francisco municipal transportation agency says crime is actually down on muni. but adds they are working with the police to try to find the suspects in these recent cases. in the meantime, riders tell kron four, they wish the system was safer for everyone.

(pam) the image of a man seen attacking a woman on international blvd in oakland... is being passed around to warn shop owners and residents. the incident happened last thursday, at the corner of 40th avenue in the city's fruitvale district. the disturbing random act of violence was caught on surveillance video. speaking through an interpreter, the female victim describes how her life has changed in the wake of the incident. she asked that we not reveal her identity assault victim/voice of translator: "before this happened i did feel a little scared but now that after this happened now i feel fear even more walking anywhere alone and i over think too much as well for my kids that one day this could happen to them as well"> today doctors told the woman that surgery is necessary to restore her

than two weeks -- a sex crime is reported at stanford university. this time an assault -- last week it was an alleged rape.(pam) kron four's philippe djegal explains where this latest incident happened... and, how students are reacting to the news. (philippe) at around 11-30 thursday night... in student housing, on the west side of the stanford university campus... the stanford department of public safety says a woman reported she was sexually assaulted by a man she knows.sarah wang/student- "they're acquiantances and that just makes the situation much more, um, more concerning." the university sent an alert out to the student body, notifying them about what happened... describing the alleged

attacker as a man in his mid- 20s. a police spokesperson says the man has not been arrested.yana levushevska/st udent- "(philippe) do you feel safe on campus? (yana) i do, i do." international student yana levushevska says she's always cautious on campus.yana levushevska/student- "just don't go anywhere at night or don't go it alone. like, or just use the main roads. like, nothings going to happen on the main road." though others circle back to the alarming point that the victims knew their alleged attackers in both the sexual assault reported in student housing thursday and the rape reported in the same area last week.sarah wang/student- "this happens a lot -- its not like one or two single incidents. so, i really hope the school can take some measures or like strengthen the security, um, around the neighborhood to ensure safety of ( grant ) this is just the latest in series of attacks on campus... perhaps none more noteable than brock turner. the former stanford swimmer was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. turner was sentenced to six months in jail and was released last year...after just three month... for good behavior. he ended up returning to his home state of ohio where he

had to register as a sex offender. the turner case has generated an effort to recall the judge in the case as well an effort for stiffer sentencing guidelines in sex assault cases. (pam) former contra costa county district attorney mark peterson, has been temporarily suspended... this comes after he was convicted of perjury last month... the state bar making the announcement in san francisco .... placing peterson on interim suspension... the suspension will last until the administrative state bar court determines whether to recommend he should be permanently disbarred. the california supreme court has the final say on whether a lawyer should be disbarred. peterson served as district attorney from 2010... until he resigned last month. he was convicted of perjury for lying on campaign finance disclosure forms. ( grant ) some of the rides at the ohio state fair are reopening following a deadly accident earlier this week. one person died and seven others were injured when the ride known as the "fire ball" malfunctioned on wednesday. inspectors have been checking every ride to

make sure they are safe. the ones given the all clear are in an area known as "kiddieland" and other low- impact rides like a giant slide. the maker of the fire ball ride has told other fairs and festivals not to use it until the investigation into what happened in ohio wraps up. ( grant ) we received an update from cal osha on fire ball rides in calfornia. at least six parks and festivals have one... including the santa cruz beach boardwalk...and great america in santa clara. all of them have been shutdown until inspectors give them the okay and they find out what went wrong in ohio. in an email today, cal osha says its records show no major acccidents or injuries involving fire ball rides in california. its inspectors have already checked out the fire ball rides at the state fair in sacramento and an amusement park in san diego. battered reputation.. now wells fargo is apologizing for charging more than 550- thousand customers for car insurance they did ánotá sign up for. an internal review found.... about 20-thousand customers may have defaulted on their car loans, and lost their vehicles, because of the unnecessary costs. bank officials blamed the problem on "inadequate" checks and balances -- as well as flaws in the systems of the company .. that handled the insurance policies. the bank promised to pay 64 million- dollars in refunds to customers and 16-million dollars in account adjustments. they plan to start sending refund checks and letters to customers in august.
