his home to find another man stealing his truck. the victim chased the suspect as he drove away -- dialing 9-1-1 while following the man in another car. according to police, the alleged thief fired a gun at the truck's owner as he was being pursued. after police arrived on the scene -- the suspect drove towards the officers, causing one of them to open fire at the driver. the driver was not injured, however -- and was arrested after trying to flee the area on foot. a murder on the penisula -- and police are still looking for the gunman. neighbors were scared out of bed early yesterday morning after hearing gunshots. its the first homicide of the year in belmont -- as kron four's philippe djegal reports. (philippe) crime scene technicians with the belmont police department... zero in on an apartment on the 500 block of ralston avenue. danny all lives next door... danny all/neighbor- "i wake up and the scene is going on. there's the person's mom whose crying, 'my baby, my baby.'" police say the gunshots were reported at around 5-15 in the

morning.danny all/neighbor- "somebody came into the apartment and popped a couple of shots and killed somebody." captain patrick halleran, at this time, will only say that the victim is a man who was visiting and didn't actually live in the apartment. he says the motive behind the murder... belmont's first of the year -- is unclear.capt. patrick halleran/belmont police dept.- "it is unusual to get a shooting, uh, and it is unusual to get a homicide." when officers arrived on scene.. captain halleran says a group of people were standing outside of the apartment. he says investigators with his department and inspectors with the san mateo county district attorney's office are working with those who may have witnessed the shooting to piece together what happened. neighbor danny all says regardless of the factors that led up to the shooting...danny all/neighbor- "i feel hurt inside." he's frustrated by gun violence.danny all/neighbor- "if you have a problem with somebody, swing -- hit 'em. try to talk it out first, but don't use a gun. you can always go to the emergency room for a black eye or for a broken jaw, just, uh, let's get the guns off the streets, please." captain halleran says the gun has not been found and neither has the suspect. police have also

not released a description of the suspect but the captain adds that he doesn't believe there's any threat to the public. in belmont, philippe djegal, kron four news. santa rosa police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened early yesterday morning. witnesses reported a man "acting erratically" -- and holding a knife inside a home on "west steele lane." when police arrived they found the man hiding under a bed. they ordered him to surrender -- but the man charged at officers with the knife. police opened fire -- killing the man. the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave. as ridership of san francisco bay ferries reaches a record high, the agency that operates the boatsis adding to its fleet. kron four's spencer blake hopped aboard one of the newest ferries in the bayto take a tour. passengers boarding this ferry in san francisco say it's one of the easiest ways to cross the bay. "'cause it's

convenient - you don't have to pay for parking, you don't have to hassle with going over the bridge."perhaps that's why a record number of people - 288 thousand of them - took a ferry during the month of july. that new number is why the water emergency transportation authority, or w-e-t-a, is growing the ferry fleet. "there's a new ferry that's been on the water for less than a month and another one is expected to join the fleet by the end of august."the newest one, hydrus, carries more people than the other ferries."i was looking to show my friend around and i realized there was some things that looked a little bit different."things like space to hold 50 bikes, along with loading areas in the fore áand in the aft."i wish i did actually bring a bike. it would be nice to have it on here now."those who ride fairly frequently could appreciate the new details. the united nations security council unanimously passed a resolution yesterday. it includes a ban on several major exports, such as: coal, iron, lead, and seafood. the sanctions could slash north korea's three billion dollar yearly export revenue by more than a third. the u-s ambassador to the u-n, nikki haley, says it's up to pyongyang whether the u-s considers a military option. president trump tweeted his approval yesterday, calling it the "single largest economic sanctions package ever on north korea." ( anny ) a 16-year-old in the east bay is making sure students have the necessary supplies for the upcoming school year. claryssa wilson hosted her annual school supplies giveaway yesterday morning in antioch. the first 200 students received warriors backpacks filled with goodies. this year, some of her past donors weren't able to contribute. so the high school junior used money from her savings to help fund the event. over -- after two professors were arrested here in the bay area for a brutal murder in chicago. we have learned from chicago police that one of the suspects had a personal relationship with the victim -- who was repeatedly stabbed and mutilated. kron4's justine waldman has the story. "the biggest mistake of my life"is what chicago police say 42-year old wyndham lathem refered to the murder of 26- year-old trenton cornell- duranleau in a video to friends and family.sot in crimes of passion which i think you can call this to see that after 9 days on the run, lathem gave himself up late friday at the oakland federal building.arund the same time 49-year old andrew warren surrendered to the san francisco police department. the two men had been fugitives since an annoymous 911 call lead chicago police to the victims body in lathem's chicago apartment on july 27. the cosmetologist was found dead mutilated with multiple stab wounds.lathem is an associate professor at northwestern university ... and warren works for oxford

university in the u-k.it appears to us marshals the suspects have friends in the bay area their surrender friday night followed negotiations with an attorney and talks with some of latham's friends.their relationship to the victim is unclearpolice are also trying to figure out why on the day the victim was found the suspects were in wisconsin and made $1,000 donation to the lake geneva public library in the victim's name.a former fbi agent has his theories..former fbi agent ross ricesot i could only characterize the donation as a vain attempt to make things right. (anny) lathem is being held without bail in the santa rita jail and has his first court apperance tomorrow morning.

he is being closely watched -- because he isn't doing well psychologically. warren is in jail in san francisco. (anny) two teens have been arrested on suspicion of starting a wildfire in sacramento county last week. 18-year-olds "jacob place" and "maxwell goldsworthy" have been accused of causing a fire that burned more than 12- hundred acres. teenagers say rural areas have become a popular place to party. that's concerning for fire officials who say conditions are ripe for fires. (anny) homeowners are hoping other teens will learn a lesson from these arrests. "place" and "goldsworthy" are facing felony arson charges -- accused of recklessly causing a fire to forest land.

(anny) oakland a's outfielder matt joyce has been suspended for two games without pay for using an anti-gay slur that he yelled at a fan. the incident happened in the eigth inning of friday night's game against the l-a angels. joyce hurled a homophobic slur at a fan -- and challenged him to a fight. joyce says the fan instigated the exchange by uttering vulgar and obscene words about him and his family. joyce has since issued an apology. the a's will donate joyce's forfeited 54- thousand dollar salary to an organization that supports the l-g-b-t-q community. intense.officer richard nelson walked away from this gun battle with a bullet in the chest.miguel salas, the man in the truck, got one in the head -- and did not survive.we're told nelson is now home from the hospital doing "extremely well".tom roberts/las vegas metropolitan police department: "it's been a tough month for us. we had quite a few officer involved shootings over this last month. everyone of those involved somebody or a suspect trying to harm us or harm our officers."this all started when metro says officer nelson and his partner approached salas in a pickup truck because a stolen cell phone had been tracked there. this newly released body cam footage shows several minutes of them negotiating with salas, trying to get him out of the vehicle that officers say was stolen.in an instant, salas pulls a gun and starts firing.police say the man was 25 years old with a criminal history and had a second loaded gun in the truck.even for seasoned officers, watching a video like this is never easy. sheriff says the officers did what they were trained to do in this situation. ( anny ) there have been at least four attacks on bart trains áorá around stations in the past 72 hours. the latest happened at the bay fair station around seven friday night. a victim was hit in the head with a metal object by a suspect. police say the attack was unprovoked and the attacker has not been caught. three other crimes were reported earlier that day - two car burglaries and a stolen car. ( anny ) two walnut farmers in butte county have filed a 15-million-dollar legal claim against the state. they say february's lake oroville dam crisis flooded their land and destroyed walnut trees. they're claiming 14 million dollars in potential lost revenue over the next half century. jem farms and chandon ranch allege state officials ignored structural issues at the dam.

( anny ) about 80 claims have been filed against the state since the oroville dam spillway crisis. (anny) in yuba county... four good samaritans came to the rescue of an elderly woman trapped in her sinking car. 77-year-old masako edwards was driving on a highway when she collided with a truck... causing her to veer into a lake. edwards' airbag hit her in the face and she was trapped by her seat belt. the truck driver and another man nearby --- saw her car submerged and jumped into the lake to try to save her. when two police officers arrived... they dove in as well. the four men were able to carry edwards to the shore. she was taken to the hospital and is doing okay. (anny) general motors is issuing a major recall for over 700-thousand vehicles.

general motors is recalling almost 700-thousand vehicles for steering issues. 20-14 chevrolet silverados and g-m-c sierra trucks are potentially affected. g-m has detected a problem in the software that controls power steering. the glitch can cause cars to spontaneously lose steering assistance for about a second. this can potentially cause drivers to lose control. the "national highway traffic safety administration" says this is particularly dangerous when performing low-speed turns. owners can bring their trucks to a dealership for a free software update. (anny) an orphaned bobcat kitten is thriving after she was rescued last month. the kitten was found when she was just four weeks old on a hiking trail near sausalito. unable to find the mother's den-- park rangers handed the kitten over to a wild life rescue center in san rafael. medical staff say other then being dehydrated, the kitten was in good health when she arrived at the center. the bobcat kitten has since been transfered to an off-site location where she is being raised with two other orphaned bobcats. she will be released back into the wild

when she is old enough. wildlife experts want to remind everyone that as cute as they may be-- wild animals should never be made pets. (anny) take a look at this... the world championships for dog surfing. it took place in pacifica yesterday. there were a variety of activities there. including frisbee catching, water ball fetching, and even a fashion show. a portion of proceeds will go to dog, surfing and environmental non-profits. a man is in custody in the east bay this morning after a botched attempt to steal a car. yesterday a hayward resident came out of his home to find another man stealing his truck. the victim chased the suspect as he drove away -- dialing 9-1-1 while following the man in another car. according to police, the alleged thief fired a gun at the truck's owner as he was being pursued. after police arrived on the scene -- the suspect drove towards the officers, causing one of them to open fire at the driver. the driver was not injured, however -- and was arrested after trying to flee the area on foot. a murder on the penisula -- and police are still looking for the gunman. neighbors were scared out of bed early yesterday morning after hearing gunshots.

(philippe) crime scene technicians with the belmont police department... zero in on an apartment on the 500 block of ralston avenue. danny all lives next door... danny all/neighbor- "i wake up and the scene is going on. there's the person's mom whose crying, 'my baby, my baby.'" police say the gunshots were reported at around 5-15 in the morning.danny all/neighbor- "somebody came into the apartment and popped a couple of shots and killed somebody." captain patrick halleran, at this time, will only say that the victim is a man who was visiting and didn't actually live in the apartment. he says the motive behind the murder... belmont's first of the year -- is unclear.capt. patrick halleran/belmont police dept.- "it is unusual to get a shooting, uh, and it is unusual to get a homicide." when officers arrived on scene.. captain halleran says a group of people were standing outside of the apartment. he says investigators with his department and inspectors with the san mateo county district attorney's office are working with those who may have

a man is in custody in the east bay this morning after a botched attempt to steal a car. yesterday a hayward resident came out of his home to find another man stealing his truck. the victim chased the suspect as he drove away -- dialing 9-1-1 while following the man in another car. according to police, the alleged thief fired a gun at the truck's owner as he was being pursued. after police arrived on the scene -- the suspect drove towards the officers, causing one of them to open fire at the driver. the driver was not injured, however -- and was arrested after trying to flee the area on foot. a murder on the penisula -- and police are still looking for the gunman. neighbors were scared out of bed early yesterday morning after hearing gunshots.

(philippe) crime scene technicians with the belmont police department... zero in on an apartment on the 500 block of ralston avenue. danny all lives next door... danny all/neighbor- "i wake up and the scene is going on. there's the person's mom whose crying, 'my baby, my baby.'" police say the gunshots were reported at around 5-15 in the morning.danny all/neighbor- "somebody came into the apartment and popped a couple of shots and killed somebody." captain patrick halleran, at this time, will only say that the victim is a man who was visiting and didn't actually live in the apartment. he says the motive behind the murder... belmont's first of the year -- is unclear.capt. patrick halleran/belmont police dept.- "it is unusual to get a shooting, uh, and it is unusual to get a homicide." when officers arrived on scene.. captain halleran says a group of people were standing outside of the apartment. he says investigators with his department and inspectors with the san mateo county district attorney's office are working with those who may have

( anny ) two walnut farmers in butte county have filed a 15-million-dollar legal claim against the state. they say february's lake oroville dam crisis flooded their land and destroyed walnut trees. they're claiming 15 million dollars in property damage and potential lost revenue over the next half century. jem farms and chandon ranch allege state officials ignored structural issues at the ( anny ) about 80 claims have been filed against the state since the oroville dam spillway

(anny) in yuba county... four good samaritans came to the rescue of an elderly woman trapped in her sinking car. 77-year-old masako edwards was driving on a highway when she collided with a truck... causing her to veer into a lake. edwards' airbag hit her in the face and she was trapped by her seat belt. the truck driver and another man nearby --- saw her car submerged and jumped into the lake to try to save her. when two police officers arrived... they dove in as well. the four men were able to carry edwards to the shore. she was taken to the hospital and is doing okay. general motors is recalling almost 700-thousand vehicles for steering issues. 20-14 chevrolet silverados and g-m-c sierra trucks are potentially affected. g-m has detected a problem in the software that controls power steering. the glitch can cause cars to spontaneously lose steering assistance for about a second. this can potentially cause drivers to lose control. the "national highway traffic safety administration" says this is particularly dangerous when performing low-speed turns. owners can bring their trucks to a dealership for a free software update. ( anny ) in vacaville, some residents are on edge this morning because they have not recevied mail in weeks. they say someone is stealing from them. the latest incident happened at an apartment complex on burton drive. police say this woman pried two mailboxes open and shoved mail into her bag before running off. police are continuing to search for her this morning.

dog surfing. it took place in pacifica yesterday. there were a variety of activities there. including frisbee catching, water ball fetching, and even a fashion show. a portion of proceeds will go to dog, surfing and environmental non-profits. (anny) an orphaned bobcat kitten is thriving after she was rescued last month. the kitten was found when she was just four weeks old on a hiking trail near sausalito. unable to find the mother's den-- park rangers handed the kitten over to a wild life rescue center in san rafael. medical staff say other then being dehydrated, the kitten was in good health when she arrived at the center. the bobcat kitten has since been transfered to an off-site location where she is being raised with two other orphaned bobcats. she will be released back into the wild when she is old enough. wildlife experts want to remind everyone that as cute as they may be-- wild animals should never be made pets. ad lib final 7 day forecast
