smelling water is affecting thousands of people in the bay area this morning.(robin) the complaints are coming from residents throughout the east bay... particularly along the highway 4 corridor. as kron4's j.r stone explains.... some people have decided to stop drinking the water altogether. pam and steve people tell me that over the last week it's gotten bad. they say the water tastes like you're drinking dirt.you don't have to go far to see bottled water in brentwood. in recent days complaints are on the rise here when it comes to the way the tap water tastes and smells.sot a dirty kinda dirt smell that is coming from the faucetsot to me it smells mildewy and rustysot that's all i can say is it tastes like dirtsot clear in color but i can definitely tell there is a difference in the taste and smell and the way it feels.contra costa water district supplies brentwood's

water. those with the district tell kron four that the algae bloom is to blame here but there is no health risk. those we talked with say they are still skeptical. sot i just won't drink itit tastes old dirty and usually it looks like there is something floating in it to me but i'm just kinda hyper sensitive right now because i'm pregnant. many in brentwood use their own filteration systems. some though say they shouldn't have to do that. not when they're paying hundreds of dollars a month on water.sot i'm tired of having to pay for bottled water but their water is so horrible. i just happened to take a pill a couple of evenings ago and practically spit the water out because it tasted so horrible.district representatives say they made changes this past weekend to try to improve the smell and taste of the water. they believe it should be back to normal in a day or two. now brentwood is not the only city where there are problems. customers in pittsburg, antioch, and corcord have

the engineer who wrote a controversial memo critisizing diversity at google has been fired. in the memo... the engineer says women shouldn't take tech jobs due to "biological" reasons. he also said men have a "higher drive for status" than women and that the company' diversity programs are merely political actions. google's c-e-o said the engineer violated the company's code of conduct. the memo was also condemned by google's diversity vice president. according to a diversity report earlier this year, nearly 70-percent of google's workforce are men.

0807176pkg42 year old former northwestern university professor wyndham lathem has waived extradition and will go to chicago to face murder charges in connection with the killing of this man, 26 year old trenton cornell-duranleau. cornell-duranleau was found stabbed to death inside the suspect's chicago apartment on july 27th. police have said the two had a personal relationship. sot kenneth wine/lathem's attorney 24-35 hopefully the case comes out in the courtroom as it should and the speculation and rumors stop so that this man can get a fair trial. that's what we're really concerned aboutat a hearing at the east county hall of justice in dublin monday, lathem's attorney asserted his clients 5th and 6th amendment rights in preparation for his return to chicagosotwhen he shows up in chicago and on his way there he may be shepherded by chicago police and its very important the defendant not be question by police outside the presence of counselif they assert their 5th and 6th amendment rights and that's what we did.investigators say after the murder, lathem sent

friday night in the bay area. warren's hearing is scheduled for friday in san francisco+ (james) while mcdonalds restaurants are known for selling billions of burgers ... a mcdonald's in the san francisco's haight neighborhood is known more for drug- dealing, fights and shootings. there was a shooting on the property just this past week. now the city is offering to buy the property and re- purpose it in hopes of eliminating some of the crime problems. (robin) the menlo fire department and menlo college - will begin inspecting several trees next week... after an oak tree branch feel on a group of people in atherton. it happened during a company picnic at the college on saturday. a three- foot-wide tree branch crashed onto about six people, including a mother and her 2-year-old daughter. the little girl was rushed to the hospital after the tree fractured her skull. the toddler had to undergo surgery on her eyelid. the girl's mother and one other person were also hurt, but are expected to be ok. (james) the wireless wars are heating up.. a carrier anounced today.. it will be offering a significant discount on unlimited data plans for people of a certain age.(robin) kron 4's tech reporter gabe slate has details on who can qualify for this discount. ((pkg))later this week t-mobile will begin offering a new wireless plan.. 2 phone lines of unlimited data for $60 a month. and that includes all fees and taxes. the only catch is you have to be 55 or older.t-mobile's ceo john legere posted this video online explaining why they are doing this sot - t-mobile - "i'm talking about the way the wireless industry treats the boomers.. it's insulting " he went onto mock the way some carriers try to appeal to the older generation through simple phones with big buttons. right now, there

on 26th near magnolia street in west oakland before they arrived this guy was out there cleaning up the spillscrapping sound .. come on man you ain't got to put me no camera, i'm fidding to clean this mess up you were already on camera alright ,alright. he was already on camera because i got on the video and there it is 7 am saturday morning, a camper pulls up and pulls the black water pipe, i guess it's the black water. basically the driver dumped the entire contents of the rv's toilet onto the street and then he drove away is that toilet paper? yea i'm fiddin to clean this up bruh you just saw this (yea) what do you think i think it's incredibly disgusting the raw sewage dump wasn't just limited to 26th street you see he left a trail all the way back to his rv we followed the trail of sewage two blocks away and there he was parked

on the street so oakland police were called and all the information was supplied however, one of the business owners confronted the driver and basically shamed him into returning to 26th street to clean up the messnats: well i appreciate you cleaning it up that what i'm fidden to dothen he left claiming he was going to buy some bleach to sanitize the street however, he only made it to his camper which was parked near 29th and linden about 5 blocks away where after trying multiple batteries and a car to jump start the rv he never returned to the scene nats: ambiance his camper is just one of possibly hundreds parked all around oakland like these on wood street and since there are no public disposal for the tanks for the garbage dumped on the street the unfortunate thing about this is i think this is probably happening all over the city this guyt just happened to be caught by my camera so the crime scene crew is cleaning up the mess (no pun intended) and hey may have to return you see a few feet

the suspect were released. this is the first time bart has released crime-related images to the public since installing new cameras on trains. an oakland fire investigator saw the pictures yesterday and then recognized the man while out in oakland. 42-year-old mario washington was arrested less than three hours after the images were released. many people now want to know if the success of releasing the images will lead to bart releasing more surveillance of crimes that happen on trains and at stations. a deadly shooting over the weekend. investigators have identified 27-year-old jovhon alexander stewart as a suspect. he is accused of opening fire saturday night at an apartment building on ralston avenue 24-year-old dejohn jones was killed. investigators say stewart should be considered armed and dangerous. ( darya ) a brush fire near grizzly peak boulevard in the east bay hills is now 100 percent contained. the fire burned 20 acres. it is being investigate as a possible arson. last week... u-c berkeley police arrested a person who fled the scene of a crash on grizzly peak boulevard near where the fire started but the official cause has not been released. ( mark ) one of san francisco's most exclusive streets was auctioned off to a south bay couple. homeowners are now fighting back against the city and the couple that bought the street. the san jose couple bought presidio terrace for just 90- thousand dollars at in auction in 20-15. people living in the gated community street have since filed a lawsuit.

their homeowner's association is accused of failing to pay property taxes for three decades, resulting in the auction. homeowners claim they never got the fees because the notices were sent to a wrong address. ( darya ) a warning from nasa this morning ahead of the upcoming solar eclipse. as we get closer to the eclipse on august 21st there is a growing demand for the safety glasses used to watch the eclipse.( mark ) and now people are being warned to watch out for scams. experts say look for the glasses with the i-s-o icon. and make sure you can clearly see the manufacturer's name. ( mark ) severe weather causing more problems across the country. flooding trapped people in texas. one man was forced on top of his car as he waited to be rescued. rescue crews used big ladders to eventually reach the man -- and bring him to safety. meteorologists say this part of texas typically sees about two inches of rain in the entire month of august. but yesterday they saw three to five inches of rain. ( darya ) and in maryland... strong winds flipped cars and forced people to run to safety. you can see that the wind flipped one car on top of another. police say two other cars were also overturned on this same property. to honor the toddler killed in an alligator attack last year. a lighthouse statue has been installed at the grand floridian in orlando. that's the disney resort where two-year-old lane thomas graves was playing near the water... when an alligator grabbed him and dragged him in. the graves family says it stands as a beacon of hope and support for families in the depths of despair. (mark) the engineer who wrote a controversial memo critisizing diversity at google has been fired. in the memo... the engineer says women shouldn't take tech jobs due to "biological" reasons. he also said men have a "higher drive for status" than women and that the company' diversity programs are merely political actions. google's c-e-o said the engineer violated the company's code of conduct. the memo was also condemned by google's diversity vice president. according to a diversity report earlier this

year, nearly 70-percent of google's workforce are men. (mark) uber co-founder travis kalanick will not be returning to the company as its c-e-o. the wall street journal reports the chairman of uber made the announcement to staff yesterday. rumors are now spreading about kalanick returning to the company, but taking on a different role. you may remember kalanick resigned as c-e-o back in june. uber is now being investigated over allegations of mishandling sexual harassment. no word yet on who will be uber's new c-e-o. (darya) this morning a california man is under arrest for making online threats to two separate schools in indiana. police say buster hernandez used the name "brain kill" to post threats of explosive devices against the schools and a mall in indiana. investigators say that hernandez told them he wanted to be the worst cyber terrorist who ever lived. he is expected to be sent to indiana by the end of the week to face the charges. (mark) tropical storm franklin made landfall on the yucatan coastline in mexico. people in the area are preparing for flooding rain and damaging winds up to 70 miles-per hour. government officials in mexico issued a hurricane watch for part of the yucatan peninsula. the storm is also expected to pass through belize and honduras. (darya) three boy scouts died after a sailboat hit an overhanging power line on a lake in texas. the three boys were 11, 16 and 17 years- old. they were electrocuted while they were sailing over the weekend. the two teens died by the time rescuers reached the boat. the 11-year-old died yesterday. police are now investigating why the power line was overhanging the water near the boat. filed a lawsuit yesterday against his elemntary school and at the cincinnati public schools district. here is video of the gabriel being bullied back in january... his mother says she didn't know her son was attacked outside the school's bathroom and was knocked unconscious. she says the school told her that he fainted. gabriel hanged himself at home two days after the incident. the school district has said gabriel told staff he fainted and never said he was bullied or assaulted. rescue of a dog dangling from a florida apartment building is all caught on camera. the dog was dangling helplessly from a second story balcony. one neighbor threw down a bed sheet, hoping it would brace the fall. it was a long 40 minutes for both the dog and the people who were trying to save it. the dog fell to safety with the help of people nearby. no one could find the dog's owner, but people who witnessed it are glad the dog is alive.

(ááá2-shot @bamááá) (darya) a 16-year-old boy in australia is injured by an unusual flesh eating sea organism.(mark) the teen was standing in waist high water, and when he got out he realized his legs and feet were bleeding. doctors discovered thousands of tiny bites on the teen's legs.

(darya) marine biologists later identfied what had injured the teen, and said they are referred to as "sea fleas." several other swimmers also reported having wounds from the sea fleas. (mark) doctors say the sea fleas do not cause lasting damage, and the teen is expected to recover. (darya) a driver is caught on video pointing a gun at another driver in texas. this happened on a busy interstate near dallas.(mark) a woman was driving to work when she noticed a man driving erratically. she decided to pull up next to him and record him in case he caused a crash. he then pulled out a gun and points it at her. (darya) the driver turned himself in yesterday and claims it was self defense. he told police he thought the cell phone was a weapon. police say charges are expected to be filed today. (darya) passengers on a ferry in chile had to be rescued after it caught on fire. the chilean navy was able to rescue all 28 passengers and three crew members on board. investigators believe the fire started in the engine room. no one was hurt. looking for this man after a deadly shooting over the weekend. investigators have identified 27-year-old jovhon alexander stewart as a suspect. he is accused of opening fire saturday night at an apartment building on ralston avenue 24-year-old dejohn jones was killed. investigators say stewart should be considered armed and (darya) a brush fire near grizzly peak boulevard in the east bay hills is now 100 percent contained. the fire burned 20 acres. it is being investigate as a possible arson. last week... u-c berkeley police arrested a person who fled the scene of a crash on grizzly peak boulevard near where the fire started but the official cause has not been released. (mark) oakland's deputy police chief is now portland's new police chief. danielle outlaw was appointed to the position yesterday. outlaw is the first african american woman to lead the portland police department. off the coast of australia have been identified. one of those marines is from california. 19-year-old ruben velasco is from los angeles. he was on an "osprey" when it crashed on satudray. his body still has not been found. two other marines were also killed. 23 were rescued after the crash. the australian navy found the wreckage yesterday. recovery operations are still underway this morning. limited to 26th street you see he left a trail all the way back to his rv we followed the trail of sewage two blocks away and there he was parked on the street so oakland police were called and all the information was supplied however, one of the business owners confronted the driver and basically shamed him into returning to 26th street to clean up the messnats: well i appreciate you cleaning it up that what i'm fidden to dothen he left claiming he was going to buy some bleach to sanitize the street however, he only made it to his camper which was parked near 29th and linden about 5 blocks away where after trying multiple batteries and a car to jump start the rv he never returned to the scene nats: ambiance his camper is just one of possibly hundreds parked all around oakland like these on wood street and since there are no public disposal for the tanks for the garbage dumped on the street the unfortunate thing about this is i think this is probably happening all over the city this guyt just happened to be caught by my camera so the crime scene crew is cleaning up the mess (no pun intended) and hey may have to return you see a few feet away is a storm drain filled ith flies with a button which reads this drains to the bay . in west oakland stanley roberts kron 4 news

(mark) one of san francisco's most exclusive streets was auctioned off to a south bay couple. homeowners are now fighting back against the city and the couple that bought the street. the san jose couple bought presidio terrace for just 90- thousand dollars at in auction in 20-15. people living in the gated community street have since filed a lawsuit. their homeowner's association is accused of failing to pay property taxes for three decades, resulting in the auction. homeowners claim they never got the fees because the notices were sent to a wrong address.

(darya) the family of a teen killed on a failed ride at the ohio state fair are now expanding their wrongful death lawsuit. an attorney representing the family of 18-year-old tyler jarrell says they are outraged that the

fire ball ride had excessive corrosion and was not inspected. the family is not only filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the amusment park but they are also pushing for a bill called "tyler's law." it would create universal rules for inspecting rides across the country. (darya) north korea is vowing to make the "u-s pay dearly" after the approval of new u-n sanctions against them. north korean officials say sanctions will never force them to give up their nuclear program. u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson is in the philippines where he said north korea 'must' give up its missile launches. u-s officials say they are still open to a diplomatic solution. (mark) a massive manhunt is underway this morning for a man who killed a missouri police officer. 37-year-old officer gary michael was shot and killed over the weekend. police say james mccarthy got out of his car at a traffic stop and shot officer michael, who later died. the officer returned fire, but police say mccarthy returned to his car and drove off. officer michael leaves behind a wife and two sons. has installed a statue to honor the toddler killed in an alligator attack last year. a lighthouse statue has been installed at the grand floridian in orlando. that's the disney resort where two-year-old lane thomas graves was playing near the water... when an alligator grabbed him and dragged him in. the graves family says it stands as a beacon of hope and support for families in the depths of despair. (darya) hackers have posted a new batch of files stolen from h-b-o and now they are demanding several million dollars. the latest data dump happened yesterday. it contained scripts from five episodes of game of thrones. the information also included emails from top executives and reports of legal claims made against the network. this is the second data dump from this hacker. h-b-o says they are working with cyber security experts to catch the person responsible. the hood of a police cruiser and it was all caught on camera. it happened in oklahoma over the weekend. the officer was looking for the owner of a lost pony, when this goat climbed onto the squad car. a neighbor came out and helped get the goat down... but the goat jumped right back up a second time. the officer joked that the video would help make a great insurance claim for insurance, but officials with the department didn't do any

(mark) this mountain lion crosses highway 101 near los angeles. this is video of the mountain lion in the santa monica mountains. wildlife officials say highway 101 is a major obstacle for animals in the area. scientists say this is only the 4th documented mountain lion to successfully cross the highway since they began tracking the animals 15 years ago. they say when mountain lions get to the freeway they usually turn around.
