barcelona attack points to a chilling and persistent trend -- the use of 'vehicles'as deadly weapons by terror groups or radicalized individuals...(grant) catherine heenan is here with just a few of the other recent examples of vehicle attacks in europe. (catherine) we're talking about vans, cars and trucks and the list is long. looking at just the last year or so -- here are some of the most chilling examples.. july 14th, 2016 - a man used a 20-ton rental truck to plow down hundreds of people celebrating bastille day in nice, france. they were gathered for a fireworks show - and lots of families with childrenwere among the crowd. 84 people were killed and

hundreds were injured. the tunisian driver was shot to death by police. authorities say he'd become radicalized. his father claims he was also mentally ill. this past june third - a van mounted the pavement of london bridge and was driven into pedestrians. the van crashed and three men began a stabbing spree -- killing people in a nearby pub and restaurant with long knives. 8 people were killed and 48 injured - including four unarmed police officers.the three attackers - who wore fake explosive vests - were all shot dead by police. isis claimed responsibility. april 7th of this year, a man drove a large truck into a crowd in a busy streetin stockholm, sweden....then crashed the truck into a department store. five people were killed and 15 injured. the attacker admitted to a 'terrorist crime.' going back to at least 2010 -- al qaeda was encouraging recruits to use trucks as "mowing

(grant) another big story we are following tonight... three suspects have been arrested for the murder of a hayward man last month. valerie boden, pablo mendoza and brandon follings were taken into custody today for the deadly shooting of daniel deltoro. authorities say the three suspects drove up to deltoro and gunned him down. deltoro was walking his three month old son in a stroller at the time of the shooting. all three suspects are facing murder charges. the alameda county sheriff's office is still encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to contact them. (vicki) a police shooting in the east bay leaves one man dead. it happened on the

13-hundred block of via deste in livermore. police received calls that a man was challenging people to a fight. that led to a standoff, a house fire, and eventually a shooting. kron 4's lydia pantazes has the latest details. it happened just before 9 last night on via deste. officers were called to the area after witnesses say a person was acting bizarrely and challenging people to a fight. the person refused to listen to officers commands and went into a home where they armed themselves with a gun. police negotiated with the person for a few hours before a fire was lit inside the home and the person came out the home with a shotgun. that's when officers shot him. the person was pronounced dead at the scene. fire crews put out the fire inside the home. no officers or other people were hurt. we'll bring you more information on this story

as it enters our newsroom. (grant) the alameda county coroner's office has identified the two boys killed in a car crash in east oakland last night. six-year-old ezequias lopez and 11-year-old nixon lopez did not survive their injuries. both were pronounced dead at children's hospital oakland. the

collision was reported at around 8-30 last night. it happened at the intersection of 55th avenue and international boulevard. police say the car the kids were riding in slammed into another car as their car tried turning onto 55th. sandra jefferson/witness- "i have a three year old granddaughter, so it just, i really felt the pain."//marco marquez/opd- "as an officer myself and also as a father, um, in hearing about this case, yeah, it hit me personally, um, and i'm sure it hit all of the officers and the first responders that responded to this scene personally as well." both drivers survived the crash. police say they are in serious but stable condition at local hospitals. the cause of the crash has not yet been determined... but investigators say it doesn't appear drugs or alcohol were factors. (vicki) those who have been pushing for more safety measures on highway 17 in the south bay are no doubt cheering the push for a new law that would require training for the drivers of big rig trucks. kron four's rob fladeboe is live on highway 17 right now to explain what this is all about.

(rob live) anyone who has ever driven highway 17 knows the feeling when they're along side one of those sand trucks or big rigs....you're thinking i hope the driver of that 80,000 pound machine knows what they're doing. many do, of course, but it has taken a tragedy to get the ball rolling on a new law that should help make sure every driver is properly trained. (live vo) i want to take you back to july of 2014. this was the terrible crash that led to a lawsuitthat sparked this new push for more truck safety on highway 17. a big rig was northbound on highway 17 near lexington reservoir that day when it lost control and plowed into ten cars. traffic was backed up and people were just sitting in traffic when the big rig came barreling up from behind and could not stop. it was one of the worst crashes in recent years. several people were injured. daniel mcguire, of santa cruz, who was on his way to work. was killed. his family filed a wrongful death

suit and won a $9 million dollar award against the trucking company. now his parents are pushing for a new law in their son's name, daniel's law, which would require stricter safety regulations and training for all big rig drivers across california.here are gail-jean and doug mcguire. gail jean mcguire/daniel's mother"....the more i thought about it the more i thought that we have to do something about this. we live in a community where people have to drive highway 17 to get to work or school or the airport and i don't want anyone else to go through a parent's worst nightmare..."doug mcguire/daniel's father ".....it's not about the money, it's about bringing justice for daniel. he will be smiling down on us to know that he made a difference in the lives of other people and that this sends a message that those who don't follow the law will suffer a severe penalty..."the plaintiff's attorney, robert allard, says that tracy-based saini trucking company is now out of business and bankrupt. he says daniel's law would, among

(vicki) a bay area man who is now out of work after attending the alt right rally in charlottesville over the weekend is coming to his own defense.(grant) kron4's maureen kelly talked to the former fast food worker who denies being a white supremacist. the former fast food worker did not want to go on camera but i talked to him outside his home in clayton.he said he went to the rally in virginia because he's a conservative and because he expected this to be the biggest right leaning event of the year. here's the picture of him at the rally that was put up by a twitter user with the handle yes you're racist. that post was brought to the attention of top dog, the berkeley hot dog chain where white worked. the company they talked to white after his participation in the rally was made public.and then white voluntarily resigned.in a

statement white says "i believe many participants and attendees are being unjustly targeted and demonized. i want to make it clear that i am not a white supermacist, nor was i ever. he says the those in the crowd saluting and chanting was a small portion of the crowd.in person he reiterated that he was there to stand for freedom of speech.he showed me some cuts on his elbow that he says were from being attacked by a razor by a counter protestor. he says he didn't leave the event for his own safety, because he felt the other attendee of the rally would protect him. maureen kelly kron4 news. u-c berkeley. city officials say the right-wing rally does not have a permit... officials are telling people who want to stay safe to keep away from the area. (grant) the teenagers who filmed themselves climbing the golden gate bridge are being charged with misdemeanor trespassing... and climbing on a toll bridge. peter kurer and thomas rector of wisconsin posted the video to social media last april-- ratting themselves out. in the video-- the teens are doing flips and somersaults on the bridge. they are even hanging off the bridge from their fingertips without safety gear. climbing the golden gate bridge can land you up to one year in jail. the teens are scheduled to be in court in september. security measure on the golden gate bridge have been revised since the stunt. international airport that would have been devastating... the faa is now issuing new rules at the airport. the new procedures apply to nighttime landings and control-tower staffing at s-f- o. pilots now must use instrument landing systems or satellite-based systems to line up for the correct runway. they will no longer be able to make so-called visual approaches to land. in addition-- two air traffic controllers must be in the tower during busy late-night periods. (grant) in an effort to promote a presence on public transportation, bart police showed up at a job fair in san francisco earlier today.(grant) newly appointed chief carlos rojas and some of his officers were at a-t-and-t park... recruiting military veterans. the job fair was called "hiring our heroes." rojas says bart police currently has 39 positions available, and they plan to fill them within 18 months. this comes after a rise in crime on trains and at stations. (grant) chief rojas says those with military or police background experience will receive a 10-thousand dollar bonus once hired. he also says bart p-d is looking into

'focus employment,' hiring people for specific positions. (vicki) a bay area nurse and her husband are back in mexico after a long legal battle to stay in the u-s. the couple who entered the country more than 20 years ago were deported overnight. kron 4 was at the airport last night when maria sanchez and her husband said goodbye to their family. sanchez was a nurse who helped cancer patients at highland hospital. her husband was a truck driver. both crossed the border illegally back in 1994. the couple will take their 12-year-old son with them but sanchez says the hardest thing is leaving behind their three older daughters. maria sanchez/family being deported:what kills me the most is like i won't be there for my daughter when she graduates. i won't be here for my daughter when she goes through a lot of things. senator feinstein called me herself and she told me, you make sure that the kids have my number so that they can reach out to me if they need anything. you be strong and don't worry and i'll make sure those girls will be okay and she gave me her word.(vicki) senator feinstein says

(vicki) breaking news at 5:30. a terrorist attack in barcelona - leaves 13 people dead.... more than a dozen people injured. this after a van plows through a crowd of people.(vicki) and now police in spain are carrying out a major raid - tied to today's attack. (grant) police say they have shot and killed four and injured another person. police are carrying out the operation in a town called cambrils... a seaside resort town about 60 miles away from barcelona.

(grant) apple's ceo tim cook is donating two million dollars to two human rights groups. it is part of his pledge to lead the fight against hate that has been fueled by the white nationalist rally in virginia. one million dollars will go to the southern poverty law center... the other million will go to the anti- defamation league. both those groups monitor hate speech in the u-s. cook also denounced trump's response to the virginia rally in an e-mail to apple's employees. he said he disagrees with the president blaming the violence on "both sides." (grant) and - california's former governor arnold schwarzenegger is giving 100-thousand dollars to the simon wiesenthal center, an anti-hate organization.

schwarzenegger referred to the killing of protester heather heyer as an act of domestic terrorism in a facebook post on sunday. the former governor paid tribute to her, and the two virginia state patrol troopers killed in a helicopter crash saturday. he called out white separatists, writing in part quote, "there is no white america - there is only the united states of america." ( pam ) today's attack is eerily similar to several we have seen over the past year in europe. the deadliest... last july in nice, france. a truck plowed into a crowd celebrating bastille day... killing 86- people and injuring more than 4- hundred others. the driver... killed in a shootout with police. isis claimed responsibility for the attack several other suspects were arrested... accused of helping the driver in the plot. ( pam ) the most recent attack was in june... when a van ran down pedestrians on the london bridge. the three men inside then jumped out and ran into an entertrainment area... stabbing people. eight people died... and dozens more were wounded. it was the third attack in england this year. the three

food truck and made her order when she saw the two cars slam into each other. and, after the initial shock wore off... she says she and other witnesses were devestated to learn two kids were in the chevrolet. six-year-old ezequias lopez and 11-year-old nixon lopez. sandra jefferson/witness- "its really sad. i went to work today -- i didn't get any sleep. i told my boss about what happened and he just told me to take off and go home. i can't concentrate on anything. i keep thinking about those poor kids." paramedics did all they could to save the six and 11-year-olds... but by the time the kids were rushed to children's hospital... they were pronounced dead. marco marquez/opd- "last night's accident was a tragedy." oakland police officer marco marquez says the crash was first reported at around 8-30 wednesday night. he says a crysler 300 was headed westbound on international bouleveard... and, crashed into the chevrolet as it traveled east on international and tried turning onto 55th.marco marquez/opd- "alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this collision." officer marquez says it's unclear, at this time, what caused the crash or who is at fault. both drivers were taken to hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

the food truck parking lot was shutdown for several hours overnight, so sandra jefferson had to wait until the late morning to come back and get her car... she says unfortuantely, it'll be impossible to erase the memory of seeing one of the boys who passed away.sandra jefferson/witness- "it was just really hard to see them pull him out. i mean, he was lifeless when they pulled him out of the car. he was out of it completely." jefferson hopes this crash may lead to the addition of a stop light or sign in the area... in oakland, philippe djegal, kron four news. (grant) a police shooting in livermore last night left one man dead. it started just before nine pm at a home on via deste near montecito circle. police received multiple calls about a man acting strangly and challenging people to fight. when officers arrived, the man refused to obey their

orders and went inside the home-- and grabbed a gun. authorities say the man began making suicidal comments and several shots were fired in the home. police had been negotiating for hours when they noticed a fire had been started in the home. a short time later-- the man came out of the house pointing a gun at police. that's when officers opened fire. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. the fire was quickly extinguished one of the man's friend's watched the incident in shock.(friend of man's wife): "i've never seen anything like this. and then to be evacuated from your own home, it's worrisome for the neighbors and she was a good friend of mine so i was conderned about their safety." police say the man was home alone at the time of the incident. no one else was injured. the names of the person killed and the officers involved have not been released. a live look outside right now...(grant) let's get

the bay area fast food worker who is now out of a job after attending the alt right rally in charlottesville denies that he is a white supermacist.( pam ) kron4's maureen kelly talked to the former 'top dog' employee outside his home in clayton. the is the picture of cole white at the unite the right rally which is why he is now out of work.it was put up by a twitter user with the handle yes you're racist. that post was brought to the attention of top dog, the berkeley hot dog chain where white worked. the company says white voluntarily resigned after his participation in the rally was made public. during the event members carrying torch chanted racist slogans and gave nazi salutes. it turned into a violent clash with counter protestors. in a statement white says those

we have seen accidents on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains... but none has probably had the impact this one did three years ago. it left a santa cruz man dead... and could lead to major changes in california law. a law is in the works that would enact stricter safety requirements for big rig drivers.( pam ) as kron four's rob fladeboe tells us, it comes as a result of a lawsuit filed by the family of the man who was killed in the crash. gail-jean mcguire/son killed on highway 17gail jean mcguire is talking about what she found out after her son daniel mcguire, of santa cruz, was killed back in july of 2014 when a big rig truck barreled

is still at large. wilson is wanted for stealing a truck, leading police on a chase and striking a vehicle, monday morning. during which he injured a female driver and her 2-year-old child. police say wilson is considered to be armed and dangerous. anyone with information of his whereabouts is asked to contact pleasant hill police. (grant) a fire at a warehosue in santa rosacaused $450 thousand dollars worth of damage. crews say the fire started at a nearby homeless encampment... but the exact cause remains under investigation. it happened around six this morning on petaluma hill road. there crews found a warehouse on fire those flames spread to a nearby rug and cleaning products. that business had not yet opened for the dayso crews had to force their way in. they sucessfully put out the fire however not before the flames destroyed many furniture items and nearby vehicles. luckily no one was injured.

two young wisconsin men who recorded themselves free climbing to the top of the golden gate bridge earlier this year....have now officially been charged. catherine heenan is here with more on their upcoming day in court.... (catherine) the video is hair-raising....and clearly infuriated bridge authorities.... it shows the april 11th stunt....set to music....and it went viral. now 18-year-old peter 'teatime' kurer and his friend thomas rector - believed to be in his 20's - have been hit with charges of misdemeanor trespassing and climbing on a toll bridge. shortly after they posted this video on facebook and you-tube -- the c-h-p and homeland security began investigating. kurer and rector have now been ordered to appear in court for arraignment in san rafael september 12th... climbing on the bridge is punishable by up to a year in jail. in the video - they dangle over the

(grant) epipen maker mylan...has agreed to pay 465-million-dollars in a settlement with the department of justice. the payment would settle claims that mylan mis-classified epi-pen as a generic drug... in order to avoid rebates - mostly payable to medicaid. epi-pen is an emergency injection used for severe allergic reactions. as a brand name drug, it is subject to higher rebates payable to medicaid. that regulation is meant to protect taxpayer-funded programs from large price spikes for drugs only available from a single source. the justice department says that to keep from paying the rebates, mylan wrongly classified epi-pen as a generic drug.
