(james) we are now just hours away from the solar eclipse. thousands of people are expected to make their way to watch parties or areas where they think they'll get the best view.(tiffany) it will be the first total solar eclipse to sweep coast- to-coast across the u.s. in 99 years. reporter andrew spencer begins our team coverage this morning. as the moon starts to get into position to sweep its shadow across the united states from the west coast to the east coast, some are packing up...jim mcalister, plans to watch the eclipse: "sleeping bag. tent. air mattress. lights....others are

already there.mark johnson, california resident: "we left at 4:30 in the morning. we got here at about 3:30 in the afternoon."wherever you're going...man on camera: "nebraska."man on camera: "wyoming, i think."...don't expect to be the only people there. oregon saw some huge traffic delays this weekend, as people tried to be the first in the path of totality. ...and because the eclipse isn't happening in one specific place, cities like idaho falls have had a hard time planning for it.kerry hammon, idaho falls public information officer: "this event is a challenge, because we're expecting far more people, and they're not going to just one location. they're expected to be going all over. and so planning those resources when you... there's just so many according to a c-n-n poll, about half of americans have the solar eclipse on i'm andrew spencer, reporting (tiffany) here in the bay area... there is a lot of excitement about today's eclipse. the lawrence hall of science in berkeley... hosted an "eve of totality" celebration... giving families a chance to study up on what to expect this morning. kron four's philippe djegal reports. john vargas was able to get one for his six-year-old son just in time for the big day.john vargas/father- "i hope he learns how special it is, and, uh, the safety definitely, so he doesn't hurt his -- doesn't hurt his eyes." on sunday, in berkeley, families stopped by to soak in as much knowledge about monday's solar eclipse. patricia vargas/john's sister- "it's very exciting." john erickson, the director of the planetarium, says visitors are also learning about just how rare this event will be.john erickson/lawrence hall of science- "about three quarters of the face of the sun will be covered up. that sort of thing happens maybe about once a decade in a given place like california. but farther north and all across from oregon to south carolina, there will be a total eclipse which is something that hasn't happened in here for decades." during their visit to the lawrence hall of science.. kids poked holes in index cards, learning how to look at the sun's shadow during an eclipse. they also used solar telescopes to check out sun spots... and, explored the scale of the moon and the sun... and, how precise they have to be lined up for there to be an eclipse.john erickson/lawrence hall of science- "the nice thing about

(james) breaking overnight... police in spain have confirmed the identity of the man who drove a van through a crowd in barcelona killing 13 people. he has been identified as younes abouyaaqoub . investigators say the 22-year- old is from morocco. he is the final target of a manhunt that has been going on since thursday's attack. 120 others were injured in that attack. another attack... hours later killed one person and injured several more in the coastal town of cambrils. five attackers were killed in a shootout with police. four other suspects have (tiffany)... a search is underway for ten u-s navy sailors who are missing after their ship crashed into another ship near singapore. the u-s-s john s. mccain collided with an oil and chemical tanker sunday. the navy guided-missile destroyer was on a routine port visit when the crash

accidents in the southbay.one person is dead after a car went over an embankment on 17. a witness saw it all happen. mario soto/car accident witness the car just lose control, flip, go down the hill and it just hit a couple of branches, kept going and then stopped. daniel hill/ chpit looks like they were coming north on 17 down to the summit. they may have been traveling at a speed too unsafe condition, lost control, left the roadway and went down the very steep embankment.fire officials received a call for rescue around 1:15 sunday morning. when they arrived they found a one car accident.. with two people trapped inside.mike krisman/santa clara fire dept so it's complex. it looks like this vehicle actually struck a tree so there are additional hazards besides just going down the embankments. we had issues with widow makers and snags and also clearing a footing to the patients to help with the extraction. we call it low angle rescue so we were able to get our rope system in place to safely get the patients up on the roadway

(james) in contra costa county. a suspected burglar is behind bars after a police chase. it happened in unincorporated martinez. police responded to a burglary call and located a stolen car. there was a brief police chase...ending at

a gas station on arthur road. officers exited their vehicle and the suspect...34- year joey carroll... rammed into the patrol car. officers then fired shots... but carroll was not hit and drove off. he drove the wrong way on the interstate highway 680 off-ramp and crashed into another car. carroll was arrested... and is being held on multiple charges. (james) a fire captain injured while fighting a fire... is now out of the hospital. but he won't return to duty .. until he has full use of his hands. the fire started in a home in unincorporated san mateo county on nassau drive friday night. that's near atherton. menlo park engine 4 firefighter carlos carpenter, seen here, helped pull the captain to safety. the two were on the roof of the house... when with out waraning it gave way. carpenter yanked his captian out of the hole by his shoulder straps. the captain suffered significant burns to his hands. a family of four escaped the

(tiffany) duct taped to a chair at daycare... that's what one missouri family says happened to their four year old daughter... and now they want answers about what happened. reporter gerron jordan has more. it was this photo appearing to show a four year old duck taped to a chair, that was tipped off to the d-c-f-s that's sparked an investigation and tons of frustration for one family in florissant. elysha brooks: "i'm looking at a picture of my daughter duck taped to a chair and her facial expression i can just imagine how she felt."elysha brooks says she didn't know anything was wrong until she was contacted by the dcfs about the photo of her daughter.it's believed to have been taken while her four year old was a student at the little learners of florissant daycare.elysha brooks: "she sent me a picture of my daughter taped to a chair so i'm like woah woah woa i'm at work like that's crazy."brooks says the daycare has never contacted her or her family to tell them that something was wrong or that an

incident occurred... and now these parents are on a mission to find out why.christian evans: "i won't be happy until that daycare is shut down for one and this person that did this to my child, whoever it is either- it's not an either- she needs to be in jail."we reached out multiple times to the daycare for their response to the allegations that one of their employees is responsible. we haven't heard back from them, but the family says something needs to be done and soon.christian evans: "seeing your child duck taped to a chair seeing the anxiety seeing how scared your kid is, knowing for one that you're not there to protect them and knowing for two that you have people around that would stoop to that level to even hurt your child puts you in a crazy mind state."and brooks has this warning for other families.elysha brooks: "double check on these daycares before you go to them because i thought my daughter was safe i thought my daughter was safe all this time." (tiffany) north korea... is issuing a new warning ahead of u.s.-south korean military drills which begin today. the annual exercises are seen by north korea as a test run for an invasion. some north korean government officials say the drills can push the situation into a nuclear war. they also say the u-s mainland can not dodge what it calls "a merciless strike" by the north. tensions have been growing since north korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile last month. experts say the missile appears to be able to reach major u-s cities. u-s officials said that washington prefers solving the problem diplomatically, but that military options áareá on the table. (james) we are counting down to the complete solar eclipse. a reminder this morning -- if you do not take the proper precautions before looking at the eclipse you can cause serious damage to your

eyes. looking directly at the sun for even just a few seconds can lead to temporary or permanent vision loss. even during an eclipse, the sun's u-v rays can cause eye damage leading to cataracts or cancer. doctors say you might not even notice that there is a problem until it is too late. was how my day started how about yours? it's that time of the month again, where the san mateo county saturation traffic enforcement program also known as step hit the streets this time in redwood city and woodside. so the reason i'm stopping you is the stop sign on hillbview and you also rolled the one right here onto ruby i'm riding with officer kenneth cole mcdonald from the town of atherton police department looking for people behving badly behind the wheel in this case stop sign runners this driver

wasn't even on our radar but. so i was actually going to pull over the car in front of you cause they didn't neither but then as i came up you just drove right throught it it wasn't just drivers. in woodside this bicyclist ran the stop sign and believe it or not if you ride a bike you must follow the rules of the road i thought i could stop physically without getting off the bike.. that's fine for me personally i give it to the rider it's kind of a pain to unclip however you didn't even come close to stopping officers also looked for speeders and on woodside road the speed limit is 35 but it wasn't difficult at all in fact this van was caught on lider by two seperate officers so as you were coming passing woodside high school i visually estimated your speed 50 miles per hour i used the little lidar device to confirm my visual estimation and it showed you were going 53 but what speed did the other officer get the other officer that was on the motorcycle he got you on his lidar at 59 (wow).so i got you early when you were going 53 so you were probably gaining speed all this speeding and stop sign runnners has me in the mood for something sweet to eat .oh i think i found something..hello you know why i'm pulling you over (ummm no) because you were eating while driving she wasn't just eating anything she was eating a plate of waffles... syrup and all it's a huge distraction and a huge safety hazard having a plate in you hands while you're driving down the road i have so much more to show you but unfortunatly i've run out of time. i got caught behaving badly hold that thought. we'll get back to you in another edition of people in redwood woodside stanley roberts kron 4 news

just into the newsroom. this happened in the city of marseille. police say the driver of the van has been arrested. police say there is an operation underway in the area. a woman was killed and a man was injured. each was at a different bus stop about 3 miles apart. right now there is no motive for the attack. ( mark ) breaking overnight... police in spain have confirmed the identity of the man who drove a van through a crowd in barcelona killing 13 people. he has been identified as younes abouyaaqoub . investigators say the 22-year- old is from morocco. he is the final target of a manhunt that has been going on since thursday's attack. 120 others were injured in that attack. another attack... hours later killed one person and injured several more in the coastal town of cambrils. five attackers were killed in a shootout with police. four other suspects have been arrested. ( darya ) happening today... president trump will address the nation to announce a new policy on the war in afghanistan. the president is expected to lay out a path forward in that country.

( darya ) back here in the bay area... one person is dead and another is recovering this morning after a crash near los gatos. the crash happened early yesterday morning around 1:15 on highway 17. the car went off a cliff just south of bear creek road. when police arrived, they found a one car accident with two people trapped inside. they believe the car struck a tree. police say the passenger was killed and the driver is suffering from minor injuries. a witness was there and happen.

boy may be in a blue toyota rav 4 with a license plate ending in 517. ( mark ) in the east bay... a suspected burglar is behind bars after a police chase through contra costa county. it happened in martinez. police responded to a burglary call and found a man in a stolen car. there was a brief police chase... ending at a gas station on arthur road. officers got out of their car and the suspect...34-year joey carroll... rammed his car into the patrol car. that's when officers opened fire ... but carroll was not hit and drove off. he drove the wrong way on the interstate 680 off-ramp and crashed into another car. carroll was arrested... and is being held on multiple charges. ( darya ) a fire captain injured while fighting a fire... is now out of the hospital. but he won't return to duty .. until he has full use of his hands. the fire started in a home in san mateo county on nassau drive friday night. that's near atherton. firefighter carlos carpenter helped pull the captain to safety. the

( darya ) there is growing excitement about today's eclipse around the bay area. the lawrence hall of science in berkeley... hosted an "eve of totality" celebration yesterday. this gave families a chance to study up on what to expect this morning. kids poked holes in index cards, learning how to look at the sun's shadow during an eclipse. they also used solar telescopes to check out sun spots. they explored the scale of the moon and the sun... and how precise they have to be lined up for there to be an eclipse.

( mark ) happening now... people all across the country are getting ready for the total solar eclipse. over the weekend the state of oregon saw some huge traffic delays as people rushed to get in the path of the eclipse. here in the bay area we will be able to see about 80% of the eclipse. and according to a new poll about half of americans have plans to watch the solar eclipse later this morning. ( mark ) and one california school district views the solar eclipse as a dangernot just a learning opportunity. in salinas, all elementary school district students and staff will remain inside during the two and a half hour window of

the solar eclipse. the district says it cannot provide every student with the special glasses needed to view the eclipse. so the district believes keeping kids inside is the best way to keep them safe. ( mark ) and one northern california business has come up with a creative way to use the eclipse to boost business. a florist in sacramento is offering an eclipse bouquet. the owner of the florist decided to use the hype around the eclipse to make more money. so now people can create a beautiful bouquet featuring a paper moon and a sun flower. and the bouquet comes with a pair of eclipse glasses. the florist says they sold out of al of their eclipse bouquets in a matter of hours. ( darya ) a team of researchers located the wreckage of a navy ship that sank more than 70 years ago. the team found the u-s-s indianapolis 18-thousand feet below the surface in the north pacific ocean. the navy cruiser sank in just twelve minutes when it was hit by a japanese torpedo in the pacific ocean between the

( darya ) one person is dead and another is recovering this morning after a crash near los gatos. the crash happened early yesterday morning around 1:15 on highway 17. the car went off a cliff just south of bear creek road. when police arrived, they found a one car accident with two people trapped inside. they believe the car struck a tree. police say the passenger was killed and the driver is suffering from minor injuries. police believe alcohol played a factor in the crash. 10 u-s navy sailors are missing after a warship collided with an oil tanker. ( darya ) it happened near singapore early this morning. tiffany mcelroy is here with the details. (tiffany) right now several armed forces are searching for the 10 sailors. the collision happened east of singapore... when an oil tanker collided with the u-s-s john s. mccain. take a look at the video... if you look closely you can see a hole in the rear left side of a u-s navy warship. ten u-s navy sailors went missing and five others were injured. c-n-n is reporting that the missing sailors are believed to have gone overboard. the u-s-s john s. mccain is a destroyer equipped with a missle defense system that could counter a possible missle launch from north korea. the ship is named after the father and grandfather of senator john mccain. the collision comes just two months after the u-s-s fitzgerald collided with a container ship, killing seven sailors. this

( darya ) comedian and civil rights activist dick gregory has died. his family says he passed away in washington, d-c saturday night. gregory became famous in the early 1960's as one of the first african-american comics to perform for white audiences. grgeory used his fame to advocate for civil rights in an era of segregation. later in life, he became an author and

( darya ) legendary actor, comedian and philanthropist jerry lewis has passed away. his publicists says he died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. lewis was known for movies like "the bellboy" and "the nutty professor." he used his fame to make a difference. for more than four decades, his labor day telethons helped raise more than a billion dollars for muscular dystrophy research. lewis struggled with own health problems over the years, including prostate cancer. jerry lewis was 91-years old. united states to get a glimpse of today's total solar eclipse. ( mark ) but for a 90- year-old woman from iowa this is the fifth time she's had the pleasure of experiencing an eclipse. for more than 20 years joyce blum has been chasing darkness that lasts just a few minutes. she saw her first total eclipse in 19-94 in the chilean andes mountains. since then she has traveled to south china, aruba, the black sea and now missouri to see the natural phenomenon. blum says the opportunities came because her brother served as project managing engineer for the moon landing back in 19-69. ( mark ) blum -- along with six first- timers -- are in saint joseph, missouri to see the total solar eclipse today.

( darya ) there is growing excitement about today's eclipse around the bay area. the lawrence hall of science in berkeley... hosted an "eve of totality" celebration yesterday. this gave families a chance to study up on what to expect this morning. kids poked holes in index cards, learning how to look at the sun's shadow during an eclipse. they also used solar telescopes to check out sun spots. they explored the scale of the moon and the sun... and how precise they have to be lined up for there to be an eclipse.

roseville. the graffiti included swastikas, the k-k-k symbol and the n-word. police believe the boys broke into the school yesterday morning. police say they vandalized a school gym using a fire extinguisher. they are also accused of breaking into a back office, stealing cash and breaking windows. police say the graffiti was extremely offensive.
