started shooting through the door and walls - hitting two chp officers. police say sacramento deputies then got into a shootout with the suspect... who had moved to the room's balcony...he was using with a "high-powered rifle." that's when sheriff's deputy bob french was hit - and he died on the way to the hospital. the suspect was hit and taken to the hospital. the two chp officers are expected to be recover. investigators are now searching for additional suspects. we will continue to bring you developments as they become available...and we're always updating kron4.com. several communities have been evacuated. 500 strutures are being threatened as we skeap. 29-year john ballenger of oroville...is now in police custody... he is accused of recklessly starting a campfire outside a designated campground. right now - there is zero-percent containment. (grant) the contra costa county board of education has voted to keep the mount diablo unified school district intact. a 3-2 vote came down just after midnight. had the vote gone the other way...the board would have eliminated five schools and formed a new "northgate unified school district". the new district would have been in walnut creek with northgate high school at the center of it. parents who wanted the district to split - say they believe it would better serve their communities and test scores. people who favor keeping the district together... say the division

(vicki) happening now.. police are on the hunt for a woman...they say ...uses a counterfeit driver's license to withdraw cash from an existing bank customer's account. officers say the woman entered the west american bank in livermore back in june. she fraudulently identified herself... by using a fake driver license...and withdrew a large sum of cash from the the customer's account. but the suspect wasn't done...two hours later... she entered a west american bank in walnut creek. there she made a large withdrawal from the same victim's account. the suspect is a white female in her 60's. she sometimes wears she wigs and hats to change up her appearance. (grant) a carjacking suspect in washington state... was caught on camera clinging to the door of an s-u- v... as it sped off down a road. this video took social media by storm last week. even when the car stops, the carjacking suspect is still trying to get the driver to get out. but the driver takes off again with the suspect... holding on for dear life. witnesses are still in total disbelief. in new york.. a statue of christopher columbus has been vandalized. police in yonkers say it may have been kids who destroyed it. part of the plaster statue was found by the pedestal... another part on top of a hill. this is the third time the statue has been vandalized. and here in the bay area... more than one -thousand people have signed an online petition calling for the removal of a christopher columbus statue which is inside san jose's city hall. confederate and other controversial monuments have come under fire - after a deadly protest in charlottesville this month centered around the removal of a robert e. lee statue. (vicki) some big news to report... the f-d-a has announced the approval of a leukemia treatment that it considers to be the first gene therapy cleared for the u-s market. the treatment, "kymriah," is an additional option for patients who haven't had success with first-line drugs. it contains a patient's own, genetically modified immune cells -- reprogrammed to recognize and kill the cancer.

the drug is aimed at treating relapses in b-cell acute leukemia, the most common type of cancer among children. however - the treatment costs 475-thousand dollars... but drug maker novartis says patients who don't respond after a month won't be charged. (vicki) go ahead and reach for that extra cup of coffee. drinking higher amounts of coffee has been linked to lower risk of death. the study, done by the european society of cardiology says people who drink at least four cups of coffee per day had 64 percent less risk of death. researchers also found that those who are 45 and older had a 30 percent lower chance of death if they drank an additional two cups as well. (pam) some of the most dramatic video we have seen today is from port arthur. a couple was rescued ... along with their baby. since they did not have too many options to protect the infant... they wrapped the baby in a garbage bag, to protect the child from the wind and pounding rain. the couple, along with a dog, were picked up from their apartment by boat. (steve) a drone is giving us a good view of what houston is dealing with. there is just water as far as the eye can see in this video. this video was shot earlier in the day before the clouds started to clear. you do see some cars and trucks on the roads... even with all the water. houston still has a curfew in place... it is running from 10 p-m until 5 in the morning. they are trying to stop potential looters from hitting businesses and homes.
