(vicki) some big news to report... the f-d-a has announced the approval of a leukemia treatment that it considers to be the first gene therapy cleared for the u-s market. the treatment, "kymriah," is an additional option for patients who haven't had success with first-line drugs. it contains a patient's own, genetically modified immune cells -- reprogrammed to recognize and kill the cancer.

the drug is aimed at treating relapses in b-cell acute leukemia, the most common type of cancer among children. however - the treatment costs 475-thousand dollars... but drug maker novartis says patients who don't respond after a month won't be charged. (vicki) go ahead and reach for that extra cup of coffee. drinking higher amounts of coffee has been linked to lower risk of death. the study, done by the european society of cardiology says people who drink at least four cups of coffee per day had 64 percent less risk of death. researchers also found that those who are 45 and older had a 30 percent lower chance of death if they drank an additional two cups as well. (grant) several california city officials are fighting to end the state's housing crisis. 11 mayors of the state's largest cities are urging lawmakers to negotiate a

ominious message on facebook saying ... the whole city is underwater.( steve ) houston is starting to get a break from all the rain... but there is still massive flooding in the city. at the same time... the death toll is also climbing. officials are blaming the storm for at least 38 deaths so far... and that number is expected to rise as the flood waters fall.( pam ) at last check ... some 32-thousand people are in shelters tonight .... and there are tens of thousands of beds ready should more people need a place to stay. when it comes to rescues... the national guard alone has saved 85-hundred people so far. kristen holmes with our partners at c-n-n, is in richmond,texas tonight... she has an update on the relief effort.

as dangerous rescue operations continue in flood-ravaged houston --- cities nearby are feeling the full brunt of harvey after the storm made landfall again.flooding has swallowed parts of port arthur and beaumont.in a facebook post the port author mayor writing: "our whole city is underwater right now but we are coming!" floodwaters swamped a nursing home there... rescuers racing to get elderly residents out as fast as they can. no name given/ nursing home employee: i was at home watching television and i see them on tv and i could not believe they were still here so i waded through the water and somebody gave me a ride on a boat to get here. it just breaks my hear. nearby in beaumont -- terrifying scenes like this are happening across the city. voice of tom wright/reporter: "he is in the trees. there were people in

the trees? butted to and they manage to get him in the boat. and bring him out. he had no clothes on. (cheer)in houston... thousands are in shelters.many more though ... are still waiting to be rescued ... as emergency crews and volunteers race against time to reach those still trapped in their homes.and on a flooded interstate -- a group of people formed a human chain to pull a victim to safety.the texas governor says more help is on the way.

(pam) some of the most dramatic video we have seen today is from port arthur. a couple was rescued ... along with their baby. since they did not have too many options to protect the infant... they wrapped the baby in a garbage bag, to protect the child from the wind and pounding rain. the couple, along with a dog, were picked up from their apartment by boat. (steve) a drone is giving us a good view of what houston is dealing with. there is just water as far as the eye can see in this video. this video was shot earlier in the day before the clouds started to clear. you do see some cars and trucks on the roads... even with all the water. houston still has a curfew in place... it is running from 10 p-m until 5 in the morning. they are trying to stop potential looters from hitting businesses and homes.

jewish temple in alameda. the attack happened back on august 17 at temple israel. you can see the suspect... all dressed in black... walk through the parking lot and make his way to the temple doors. at some point along the way... he grabbed a large rock. he is then seen on video throwing the rock at the glass doors. but he is not done... he is seen walking around and picking up two more rocks and throwing them at windows. multiple agencies are involved in the investigation including the f- b-i. the alameda police department says it is posting the video... hoping someone will recognize the man. ( pam ) happening right now: an out of control wildfire is threatening homes in northern california... and one person has been arrested ... suspected of starting it. the fire... which is called the 'ponderosa fire' ... ballooned overnight and people are being told to evacuate. it has grown to 25-hundred acres ... and is burning to the northwest of forbestown. that is not far from lake oroville and the oroville dam. about 500- structures are

threatened at this hour in the forbestown area. late this afternoon... cal fire says, a man was arrested because he started a campfire outside a designated area ... and that fire took off, turning into this destructive blaze. at least ten homes have been destroyed and five others damaged. the flames have also wiped out several other buildings. firefighters are dealing with rugged terrain as they try to get control of the fire. updating a fire in the east bay. cal fire says, the 'mines fire' near livermore is under control tonight. that fire started on sunday afternoon... burning over 40- acres. no buildings were damaged or destroyed... the cause is under investigation. a heat wave will have people looking to escape the east bay this weekend... but the bay bridge won't be the easy way out.. we'll explain police respond to a devastating highway accident and then end up getting

outside, another innocent bystander. sewerve team has also been linked to shooting of an orinda school board in front of her home during a robbery. and shots fired outside a concord mall.one of th men arrested marrico williams was actually being paid by the city of richmond as part of a controversial program aimed at helping people stay out of trouble.it's a program the chief of police says he still supports.the fact that it didn't work for that person is just kind of a reality of life all 7 in custody are being held on 24 million dollars bail each.maureen kelly kron4 news staying in the east bay... we have an update on the split proposed for one of the largest school districts in contra costa county. overnight, the county board of education voted to deny the petition. this, after a public hearing stretched on for hours. there is a movement to break off some of the schools from the mt. diablo school district.... and form the northgate school district.

the final decision is up to the state board of education. the northgate school district would be in walnut creek... and the secession movement has generated plenty of controversy. opponents say.. the move is elitist. in the south bay: san jose is moving forward with a plan to house the homeless. the city council has approved a program to build up to three "tiny home" villages. where they will go.... that remains to be scene. the locations must have access to transit as well as utilities. the city is expected to have a list of possible sites by the end of october. each village would have room for about 20 people. san jose eventually wants to have tiny home villages in each of the city's ten districts. let's take a look outside right now...(pam) chief meteorologist brittney shipp joins us now with the four zone forecast.
