(vicki) the decision to end the daca program drew criticism from several bay area politicians. san francisco mayor ed lee responded to president trump's decision today. "they are here because their families fled their countries in the grips of war and dire economic straights they saw america as what we all believe it to be a beacon of hope and a place of refuge." more than 2 hundred thousand californians will be affected by the end of daca. (grant) the south bay is also home to thousands of dreamers and there is strong

support for the program coming from local government offices. kron four's rob fladeboe joins us now live from san jose with more reaction to the trump administration's action aimed at ending the program. rob? (rob live) i am here at the offices of the immigrant rights network known as siren. it is one of many south bay organizations who are banding together to help dreamers fight back. hundreds of daca supporters attended a rally here at the martin luther king dr. library tuesday to pledge their support to dreamers like ariadna, a daca recipient, who was brought to this country when she was a child. ariadna/daca recipient "....daca changed my life, it changed my family and our way of life, it gave us a fighting chance....."a range of local activists denounced the trump administrations decision to end the deferred action to children of immigrants program as callous and cowardly. city resources were pledged by jose mayor sam liccardo.sam liccardo/san jose mayor ".....so to the thousands of dreamers in san jose and santa clara county,, we've got your

(rob live) here at siren's headquarters, there are signs on the door about workshops for daca recipients on how to deal with what may lay ahead. higher education also getting involved. san jose state says that any daca recipent receiving financial aid wold continue to get that money. live in san jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news (grant) former president obama is slamming president trump's decision to do away with "daca." hours after the announcement... mister obama took to facbook... calling trump's move "cruel" and "self-defeating." saying in part: "to target these young people is wrong because they have done nothing wrong." this is one of obama's most forceful post-presidency statements...

but not one that was unexpected. the former president said he would keep a low profile after leaving office, but that he would speak out if daca was eliminated. (vicki) today's decision will impact hundreds of thousands of people, but not all of them equally or at the same time.(grant) catherine heenan is here to break down what happened today ... and what comes next. (catherine) the president says he acted to preserve the constitution.. he said in a statement that he doesn't favor punishing children ... but called the u.s. a nation of opportunity because it's a nation of laws.. his attorney general today -- put it more plainly. "to have a lawful system of immigration that serves the national interest, we cannot admit everyone who would like to come here. it's just that simple."the future is anything but simple for the nation's nearly 800=thousand dreamers, a quarter of them living here in california, as of today, the department of

homeland security will no longer accept new applications for the program known as the deferred action for childhood arrivals, daca provided renewable, two-year work permits.anyone already enrolled in daca can continue working until the permit expires; if the permit expires before march 6, 2018, they can apply for a two-year renewal ... but they have to apply by october 5th.the president says he has their best interest at heart. "i have a love for these people and hopefully congress will be able to help .".the legislators return to work tomorrow, to an agenda that makes quick action on dreamers unlikely.before the end of this month, they must pass a bill to avert a u.s. debt default, renew government funding to avoid a partial shutdown, reauthorize the federal aviation administration and other critical programsextend funds for health insurance for about 9 million childrenand agree on emergency aid for victims of hurricane harvey.democratic senator dick durbin appeared with republican lindsey graham to push for a bipartisan effort.let's stand together. let's take heart and stand together and make sure that we do the right thing for the dreamers. this month of september."

(catherine) if congress fails to act and the daca permits begin to expire next year, more than 1,000 immigrants a day could lose their work permits. that figure comes from a liberal think tank -- the center for american progress. vicki and grant? (grant) three current alameda county sheriff's deputies and one former deputy were arraigned today on charges related to the alleged mistreatment of inmates at the santa rita jail in dublin. sarah krause, justin linn, erik mcdermott, and stephen sarcos are facing assault and conspiracy to obstruct justice charges. prosecutors say an investigation in the case revealed that mcdermott choked an inmate until that person

was unconscious. the others are accused of terrorizing inmates. (vicki) right-wing activist kyle chapman accused of inciting violence at a berkeley trump rally pleaded not guilty today to felony charges. chapman was charged with possession of a leaded cane at this march rally. the 41-year-old daly city man is free on bail. police say chapman was swinging a wooden stick at people during the rally. prosecutors say that chapman has two prior convictions, one for grand theft in san diego county in 2001 and one for robbery in texas in 1993. (grant) it sent thousands of people running from their homes... and tonight - we are learning that the crisis at the oroville dam could have been avoided. a look at what went wrong - just ahead. hurricane irma has now become one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the atlantic...and is being described as "potentially catastrophic"....(grant) a string of islands in the caribbean is bracing for what could be a historically

destructive storm. catherine heenan is here with more - including the concern that it could hit the u.s. mainland... (catherine) we don't know yet if the storm will affect the u.s. mainland....but the current forecastindicates it could turn toward florida over the weekend... this is a view of irma as seen from the international space station... people are staggered by the storm's size and power...it's now a category five....and has been churning in the atlantic with sustained winds up to 185 miles an hour. in florida - people are rushing to pick up supplies like groceries and water...and those long lines at gas stations are only getting longer. florida governor rick scott has called in the national guard and has ordered the suspension of road tolls across the state... and more evacuations could be ordered to begin as early as tomorrow morning.. emergency management official - currently the track hasn't forecast for going through the and coming up the coast actually miami mayor - unlike other hurricanes where see it take a wait and see and see

lawrence karnow: winds continue to pick up and fog has started to move onshore. all signs are pointing to a major cool down over the next few days. it's breezy around most of the bay area and that wind will carry the fog into the valleys and bay tonight. hurricane irma has intensified to a category 5 making it the strongest hurricane in the atlantic since allen in 1980. it continues its dangerous track toward the caribean and near florida late in the week. confidence is not high as to its eventual landing spot. in the pacific you can see the are of low pressure spinning off the coast. there is a chance we could see a few showers tomorrow night and thursday when it comes on shore. fog will be the story tonight as it fiills into the bay and valleys. a slow burn

safety experts say the state probably could have detected the problems if dam managers had reviewed the original flaws in the half-century-old dam, using modern engineering standards.authorities ordered nearly 2 hundred thousand people to evacuate in february after both spillways at oroville dam collapsed. (vicki) an update now on the wildfire burning in gilroy. the bally fire - which is burning near ballybunion drive.... is now 35-percent contained. the fire has burned about 100-acres... over weekend but did not spread overnight. it is burning in steep terrain above multi- million dollar homes near the eagle ridge golf course in west gilroy. helicopters and planes are bring used to dump water and fire retardant on the hot spots. firefighters say the fire is burning away from homes. now homes are threatened at this time. (vicki) it is not just california dealing with major wildfires tonight.... the eagle creek fire in northern

oregon has now scorced more than 10-thousand acres... fire officials say it has spread into washington state... burning at least 30- acreas there. hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate the area... and 153 hikers had to be rescued over the weekend. fire officials say hundreds of structures are in danger. police believe the fire was started by a 15-year-old boy setting off fireworks. (grant) a husband now charged with his wife's murder... claims a certain kind of medicine made him do it. this story - still ahead. the founder of a san jose based social media strategy company... died early this morning when his volkswagen was struck by a caltrain. it happened just before 1:30 this morning near the intersection of buckingham and westmoreland avenues - in redwood city. c-h-p officers say 29-year-old pierre-alexandre meloty-

kapella... drove his vehicle through a fence and got stuck on the track when it was hit. the train was going to san francisco from san jose. the tracks were cleared around 5:15 this morning. investigators are now trying to figure out if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. this is the fifth death on caltrain tracks this year. (grant) a take-over robbery at a target store in emeryville is captured on surveillance video. the robbers got away with cash... and today investigators released these surveillance video hoping someone out there might recognize the suspects. kron4's haaziq madyun gives us a closer look at the video three men run into this target store, one armed with a handgun, another holding a long rifleit happened saturday september 2nd just after midnight here at this target store on 40th street in emeryville. this is target's surveillance video. emeryville police captain oliver collins says it was closing time when

book slams bernie sanders for causing what she calls "lasting damage" in the 20-16 presidential election. in the book, entitled "what happened"-- clinton says sanders' attacks on her character paved the way for donald trump's "crooked hillary" campaign. that's according to excerpts posted on pro-clinton social media accounts. clinton also pegs sanders as an unrealistic over-promiser who isn't a democrat-- saying, quote -- "he didn't get into the race to make sure a democrat won the white house, he got in to disrupt the democratic party." the 500-page book is a reflection on clinton's stunning loss to donald trump. it's set to be released september 12th. man says cough medicine caused him to kill his wife.(grant) matthew phelps is now being charged with the murder of his wife of 10 months. robert richardson tells us what happened. lauren hugelmaier phelps frequently volunteered with the children at her church, hope lutheran.it was the site of her wedding last november, and for her funeral monday.her obituary makes no mention of her married name -- phelps. 28-year-old matt phelps is charged with a murder in an incident he claimed he didn't remember.matt phelps/husband"i had a dream and then i turned on the lights and she's dead on the floor."officers and paramedics rushed to the phelps's home, but could not save lauren.matt phelps stayed on the line with the dispatcher, describing details of what he saw when he awoke. matt phelps/husband"i find i have blood all over me and there's a bloody knife on the bed and i think i did it." phelps told the dispatcher he took some cough medicine, and said he consumed more than he should have.matt phelps/husband

(grant) outrage is growing over the trump administration' s decision to end daca. steve aveson is in the newsroom with what's coming up on kron 4 news at six. (steve) grant right now a protest outside the federal building in san francisco is growing. people opposed to president trump's decision to end the daca program have gathered there to let their voices be heard. it's one of several protests around the bay area and the country today. so now that the trump administration has made this controversial decision... what happens next? will congress be able to pull a bill together to save the "dreamers"? we will talk about all of that tonight on kron 4 news at six. grant back to you. (vicki) a high school in utah has implemented a new tardy policy that has some parents up in arms. students who are chronically late to class will be required to pay up. the first

offense is a warning. the second time the student is late he or she will have to pay a three-dollar fine... after that the fee goes up to five-dollars. teachers cannot issue the tickets... only administrators. many parents are upset that they were not consulted before the policy was implemented... and think administrators should come up with a better method of getting students to class on time. (julie rae/ parent): "i think it's just going to be a band-aid to an actual problem that could be resolved with different methods."(brett dennison/ parent): "there's a lot of families out there that are economically stressed. they're not gonna be able to pay these fines." if students can't pay the fees they can take lunch detention or show a clean tardy attendance for a few weeks. the money collected will pay for incentives offered to students. the high school's principle says they are already seeing a big decline in tardiness. (grant) kron four has been honoring some of the bay area's outstanding teachers.. tonight - one who says the theatre helped her find herself as a child.......and now her passion is sharing

(catherine) ashleigh says that she loves the fact she can come to work and 'play' every day... although there's a lot more going on both onstage - and off. we recently spent the day with her at one of the marin theatre company's summer camps... it's the last big rehearsal before opening night of the musical "seussical kids"...... and these 2nd through 6th graders are getting ready to show everybody the results of their summer camp..."that's it! look up there!"the always encouraging presence standing stage left - ashleigh worley. a former public school teacher who fell in love with theatre education and switched careers.."let me see how excited you are ava. sophie- kneel!"she's still teaching. but her classroom is a stage. and she wants everyone here to feel they're part of a family. teacher ashleigh worley"and a

lot of kids feel that way. they come running in and give us hugs and say 'oh we missed you! ....so yeah, it's pretty great. laughs'and since it's a family - the marin theatre company wants you to know you can never start too young. across the hall, some of ashleigh's colleagues are working with children as young as four..the theatre company's new boss says a camp like this one changed her life.managing director keri kellerman"and i just loved it! and that's probably why i'm able to have the career i do today." everyone seems to be having a good time - but ashleigh says it's not about turning out broadway stars. it's about learning everything from public speakingto teamwork....to the power of being somebody else. student - "i want to be big...and i want people to see that."and it's not always about being 'on' stage.10-year-old secoya is learning about being a stage manager. might that be something she wants to do? student - "yeah, it might be something i do. but my all- time dream is being on the san francisco giants."other bay

a close call this afternoon in the east bay. a big tree branch came down in oakland... just missing landing on some parked cars. this happened over by vermont street and mandana boulevard , in the lakeshore neighboroood. when our camera rolled up to the scene ... crews were already busy cutting up the branch. it does appear some power lines did get taken down in the process. no word on whether our recent heat wave had anything to do with the branch coming down. a takeover robbery at a target

lead that emryville police say have in the robbery case. investigators say the three- men were last seen getting away in a silver 4-door sedan. if you recognize the men in this video emeryville police would like to hear from you an update now on the wildfire burning in gilroy... a break in the weather has allowed firefighters to make considerable progress tonight. the 'ballybunion fire' started on sunday night... it is now 35-percent contained. at one point, it was threatening homes as it roared through dry, rugged terrain. but with things cooling off the past 24 hours... firefighters are getting a handle on the flames. the fire has burned about 100 -acres. witnesses reported seeing kids playing with fireworks shortly before the fire broke out... but investigators have not determined an official cause. an oregon wildfire - not far from portland - has grown to nearly 16- square miles... and is threatening homes.. catherine heenan is here with details on the wildfire in the scenic columbia river gorge...

student karen juarez says that for starters.....the news is affectingher ability to work after her undergraduate studies.. student - i don't feel comfortable committing to a graduate program - something i wanted to do. i was interested in going to law school later but now that's been put on hold until i find out what's happening with my work permit status. and it comes with a feeling of all the money and time put into education and not being able to work. and even not being able to do the work you've wanted to do for so long. karen says that she and many friends were able to work and study freely.....some were even able to study abroad. she says that it's heartbreaking that all of that has likely changed... pam and steve?
