home residents in south florida have been ordered to find a safer place to ride out the storm."it is what it is. these are not structural, sound buildings."broward county's animal shelter evacuated more than 175 of its residents by plane in order to make room for displaced pets during the storm. natand a new sight on florida highways: state police escorting convoys of fuel trucks "one of our top priorities right now is fuel availability.drivers have lined up for hours to buy gas, only to find the pumps were dry. "people - they're running out in their cars. they can't get it at the gas stations."the new normal in florida tonight: ... crowded highways ... crowded supermarkets.and crowded airports."i'd like to leave today. tomorrow nobody will be working here."the tropical storm winds are going to potentially start as early as overnight. that is not a time to be putting up shutters and operating. we hope people will take this a major, major storm and in many cases poses an incredible threat to large swaths of florida." (grant) hurricane irma is displaying its brute force in the dominican republic and haiti - pounding parts of the region with sustained winds of 180 miles per hour. (vicki) let's bring in chief meteorologist brittney ship - with more on hurricane irma's path. brittney? thanks in large part to cloudy conditions and lower 850 mb levels, temperatures have been much cooler today compared to yesterday. in fact, locations that were around 115 just a few days ago are struggling to get out of the lower 70s. in some spots today will turn out to be 15 degrees cooler than normal.

(vicki) and pg&e crews are heading to florida to help in the efforts to restore power after hurricane irma hits the area this weekend. the national weather service says irma is set to hit florida in the next couple of days. as part of a mutual aid agreement with the utility florida power and light...about 100 pg&e employees...line workers, equipment operators, supervisors and other personnel... are traveling to the sunshine state after the hurricane moves through the area. employees grabbed last minute items today...but they say florida officials... have them covered. (sot) "their packing up tools , safety equipment, all the things their going to need ...however... once they land they'll be getting their trucks and other heavy equipement from florida power and light." under the agreement, florida power and light will cover the costs of the support from pg&e.

(grant) news today of a huge data breach -- affecting millions of americans. catherine is back with details of the hack that hit 'equifax.' (catherine) the giant credit monitoring company has acknowledged that a cyber-security breach compromised the personal information of as many as 143 million americans. that's nearly half the country. a staggering amount of information was exposed -- suggesting the criminals have everything they need to steal identities.... including names, social security numbers, birth dates, addresses and the numbers of some driver's licenses. they even got credit card numbers for about 209-thousand u-s customers. customers in britain and canada were also affected. equifax is mailing

notices to people whose credit cards were affected. but a lot of people are upset that the company discovered this problem in late july....and only told the public today. grant and vicki? (vicki) a federal appeals court has rejected the trump administration's limited view.... of who is allowed into the u-s under the president's travel ban. an appeals court ruled today- grandparents, cousins and other close relatives... of people in the u-s should not be prevented from coming into the country. the court also ruled - that refugees accepted by a resettlement agency should not be banned. (grant) another big story we are following tonight... two sacramento police officers have been shot in the line of duty. the shooting happened this morning - as police were trying to stop a vehicle that was being driven by a man wanted for a double homicide. the suspect initially appeared to comply with the officers... as he pulled to the side of the road, throwing his keys out the window. but moments later he got out and started shooting. one officer was

shot in the chest, but the bullet ricocheted off his bullet-proof vest. the other officer was hit in the leg. both are expected to survive. the suspect was shot and killed. the shootout happened as hundreds of law enforcement officers were in nearby roseville for the memorial service for sacramento county sheriff's deputy robert french, who was killed in a shootout last week. (vicki) a captain with the oakland fire department has been arrested for possession of child pornography kron4 obtained this surveillance video of 58-year-old richard chew being arrested yesterday at his home on harper court in lafayette. richard chew was arraigned today in contra costa county superior court. he his facing one count of possesion and one count of distributing child pornography (vicki) back on august 19th the

contra costa county internet crimes against children task force launched an investigation into chew's alleged involvement with child pornography. a search warrant was served at the oakland firefighter's home and where he worked at fire house number-15. investigators say they found child porn on richard chew's computer and other storage devices. his bail has been set a $200-thousand- dollars (vicki) meantime.. an oakland police officer is facing charges. officer bryan budgin was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and resisting arrest on i-580 in dublin last night. budgin was booked at the santa rita jail on the two misdemeanor counts. he posted ten thousand dollars bail and is now out of jail. the oakland police department released a statement saying it is aware of his arrest. but they have not said if he is still on active duty. (vicki) and - police have identified a man who was shot to death tuesday night.

officers say 39-year-old cesar paguada of san jose, was the victim of a shooting that happened on story road ... about 9 o'clock tuesday night. the gunman remains at large... and police have not released any additional information regarding what led up to the shooting. (grant) we now know that record-setting heat wave over the weekend... contributed to at least six deaths here in the bay area. we knew three elderly people...between 80 and 90... died over the weekend in san francisco... all three lived alone... and died in their homes. none called 911. and today we learned three other people died this weekend in san mateo county. those three - reportedly died of a heat stroke. a good reminder - to check on the elderly during heat waves. (vicki) police are searching for a suspect... (vicki) who allegedly groped a woman - walking on a popular trail in the east bay. coming up - we'll show you the sketch of the suspect.. that's just been released by police. (vicki) the heavy rains from hurricane harvey - actually caused the city of houston to sink. according to a geophysicist - at california's institute of technology... the flooding was so widespread it actually "flexed the earth's crust"... and caused the city of houston to sink by two centimeters. however - the geophysicist says it's only temporary. once the floodwaters recede - there will be an "opposite elastic response of the crust"...

(grant) the senate approves a package of bills that pairs emergency funding for hurricane relief... with measures that would raise the debt ceiling and keep the government open for another three months. president trump, in a surprising move, worked with democratic leaders to broker the deal. shocking republican leaders in the room, the president sided with democrrats... who proposed bundling the bills together ... the package includes about 22 billion dollars for fema's disaster relief fund -- 15 billion of which is new, emergency funds. another 6 plus billion was already slated to be in the spending measure that funds the government. the legislation now goes to the house. (vicki) "be my friend"... that's what a man called out to a woman in union city before she tells police the man sexually battered her. it happened this week on the union city walking trail off union city boulevard at kohoutek (kuh-who-tech) way. kron four's philippe djegal reports from the foot of the trail where investigators say the victim has seen the suspect before.

(philippe) seconds after a woman stepped foot on this trail monday...carmen robinson/works nearby- "very frightening." and, not long after she had a trail of her own. an alleged sexual predator, who would soon pounce.rubi myrick/works nearby- "very concerned. we take walks on that trail sometimes." the alleged attack happened at around 6-30 that morning. the woman who police say was sexually battered was alone at the time. the victim helped investigators develop this composite sketch of the man. carmen robinson and rubi myrick work nearby and often take walks in the area on their lunch breaks. they say this man does not look familiar.rubi myrick & carmen robinson/work nearby- "we'll keep our eyes open." sergeant steve mendez with the union city police department... says that this was

actually the ninth time that the victim had encountered the suspect on this walking trail. in the eight previous occasions, she tells police that he walked up to her and asked her to "be his friend." she denied him and then he walked away. this time, mendez says that he groped her. sgt. steve mendez/ucpd- "she was able to call 9-11 on the cellphone because she felt that he was either going to attack her or grab her, which he ultimately did and as the attack occurred, the 9-11 dispatcher was able to to ask her questions and we believe that because she had the dispatcher on the phone, he was scared away." sergeant mendez says the victim believes the man is either hispanic or filipino. standing five-foot-seven, with a stocky build. always seen by the victim wearing a t- shirt, basketball shorts and tennis shoes.sgt. steve mendez/ucpd- "our detectives are currently looking into local, uh, sex registrants and, um, you know, checking up to see if any of them match the description that was provided with the victim."rubi myrick/works nearby- "most of the time, i always walk in pairs or a group of people." as should anyone visting this trail, until the groper is caught. in union city, philippe djegal, kron four news. students at san francisco's lowell high school were asked to shelter in place because of a grass fire in the area. the fire happened around ten this morning near middlefield drive and lake merced boulevard a shelter in place order was issued and residents were urged to aviod the area. the fire which was limited to trees and bushes produced a lot of smoke. crews put the flames out in under an hour. no injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. the shelter-in-place has since been lifted. (grant) students, teachers and staff in the pacifica school district are in mourning tonight after a freak accident killed a longtime music teacher and band leader.(vicki) kron4's maureen kelly went to ingrid b. lacy middle school where a memorial to the popular educator is growing. oceana high school students came back to their old middle school to comfort each other and pay respects to their former music teacher jerry downs. it was near here that the 15 year veteren of this district was somehow run over by his own car. it happened at around 11am wednesday and some of his students who were in pe class at the time say

they dit. the district has brought on extra grief counselors .should a student have seen something we'll be informed and able to help. it's my understanding the way the accident was situtated very little was seen.i'm told this memorial and a similar one a ocean shore elementary where down also taught music, sprang up sponstanously. students hung up homemade signs like this one saying we love you mr downs or this one which simply reads you were a good guy. they also put out sheet music, one left a drum stick.there are many pictures of downs with his students in their band uniforms.which i''m told he sometimes paid for with his own money..he was apparently a good poker player, and when he won, he made sure his students did too. one parent said the district will not be able to replace him.he was a really sweet guy he gave everything to this school it was sort of his life. the superintendent says they are going forward with back to school night here thursday night, out of respect to mr downs passion and dedication to his students.if i know jerry he would want us to move forward and for his music program to stay intact.plans for public memorial service are underway. maureen kelly kron4 news

(vicki) american airlines has canceled more than two thousand flights due to hurricane irma. operations are scheduled to wind down across south florida in the coming days. cancellations will go into effect for miami, fort lauderdale, fort myers and west palm beach throughout the weekend. cancellations in orlando will also go into

infamous video of las vegas police taking him down after the floyd mayweather-conor mcgregor fight. he says he is a victim of racial profiling and has fired bay area civil rghts lawyer john burris to file a lawsuit. today the head of the union that represents las vegas police officers asked the nfl to investigate bennett. we will tell you why they are calling for that... and the response from the nfl. we will have that story and more on kron 4 news at six. grant back to you. (vicki) gap says it plans to close roughly 200 "under- performing" gap and banana republic stores. gap owns both brands, along with old navy and athletic wear brand "athleta." gap declined to specify how many of each brands' stores will close or where. sales have declined for both brands in recent years -- as they lost ground to the so-called "fast fashion" retailers like "forever 21". meanwhile, old navy has done relatively well, with sales up five percent last month. the

(catherine) we've seen that local grocery stores in florida are selling out of basic supplies...like water. so - lots of people are turning to amazon to order things.f mark ) the problem - some of them are outraged to discover wildly inflated prices....a couple of examples - a 24-pack of nestle bottled water with expedited shipping going fornearly 180 dollars. a florida woman trying to buy groceries claims that the prices had tripled. an amazon spokesperson said that third-party sellers are to blame -- not them.still - price gouging on essential

items during emergencies is illegal in florida -- and this makes amazon look bad. after getting an earful - the company is now taking action against vendors...and encouraging customers to let them know if they spot big price hikes . grant? (grant) orange growers in florida are worried that hurricane irma could push them into bankruptcy. the florida citrus industry is already in trouble... a disease known as "citrus greening" has caused a 50- percent decline in the last five years. insects spread the disease, leaving fruit green, bitter and unusable. but experts say a direct hit from hurricane irma could cause a disastrous blow to the industry. (grant) prince george arrived for his first day of school with his father prince william today - however, one member of the family was noticeably missing. (vicki) george, who is four years old, is starting a 23-thousand- dollar a year prep-school in london. you can see him here with his dad, prince william, the little guy shaking hands with the head of the school. the duchess of cambridge - kate middleton - stayed home because she was suffering from severe morning sickness. the family announced tuesday they are expecting their third child.

(pam) an update tonight on an alameda crash that killed three people over the memorial day weekend. police say, the driver of the truck will be facing several charges including driving while intoxicated. the case is in the hands of district attorney's office ... which plans to go to trial. the deadly collision happened on may 29th at the intersection of park street and lincoln avenue. the truck hit a mini-van... the woman inside survived. two teens, along with along with a third man in the truck, died. ( grant ) breaking news: we are learning about a massive security breach that could affect 143 million americans. the credit monitoring company equifax says hackers got into a database earlier this year.

social security numbers, birth dates, addresses and in some instances... driver's license numbers... were exposed. equifax says the hackers also got ahold of the credit card numbers of about 200-thousand consumers. the breach was discovered at the end of july. equifax is one of three nationwide credit-reporting companies that tracks the financial history of u-s consumers. the data includes loans, loan payments, credit card use, rent and utility payments... all of which are factored into determining credit scores. potentially even more alarming is consumers may not even be aware they are equifax customers. the company says it is notifying people whose credit cards were affected by the breach. a memorial continues to grow tonight at ingrid b lacy middle school in pacifica where a popular music teacher was killed in a freak accident. jerry downs was the band director for 15 years here and at ocean shore elementary. today some former students, now in high school came to comfort each other and put flowers up near the parking lot where the accident happened. officials say downs was somehow run over by his own car wednesday morning. grief counselors have been brought on to help the students and the staff cope with the loss of a passionate educator. one parent we talked to got emotional when talking about what the loss means for students in the district. the superintendnet says

hurricane irma whose 185 mile- an-hour winds are being blamed for at least ten deaths as it one big concern, can the high rise buildings in miami and along the florida coast with stand irma's winds? >> will miami's breathtaking skyline withstand hurricane irma? there's no time to take them down. there's built to resist winds of 145 miles per hour. but irma has been packing winds of up to 185 miles per hour. look. this is what happened to a crane in new york city during superstorm sandy in 2012. the cranes are designed to spin in the wind, like weather vanes. high rise resident has a 13- week-old baby, and jordan is worried about those cranes. >> if one of those cranes comes through one of those windows and everything's gone, we're going to lose everything.
