signed a 15-billion dollar funding package that helps victims of hurricane harvey. a white house official says it also provides for any needed funding post-hurricane irma the measure comes from a deal president trump struck during the week with democratic leaders. it ties emergency storm relief money to a boost in the debt ceiling and funding the government for three months. republican leaders wanted a debt ceiling increase of up to 18 months. (grant) another big story we are tracking... a magnitude 8.1 earthquake hit mexico late last night... the death toll from that quake now stands at more than 50 people. kron4's steve aveson joins us from the newsroom now with the very latest, steve? (steve) the earthquake hit late last night when most people were asleep. the city of juchitan was the hardest hit. as of now the death toll stands at 58, but that number is expected to rise. crews are still

that does to normal folks maybe getting priced out...also the city's flood response, property crime, the christopher columbus statue and a several other things. to see the whole interview...just go to kron4.com. police say they've arrested a group of teens in connection with a fire that burned 100 acres of land in gilroy. four teens between the ages of 14 and 15 were arrested after they were suspected of starting the fire with illegal fireworks. they have since been released to the custody of their parents. police say a fire broke out and one of the teens tried to put it out, but it quickly spread out of control.cal fire says the fire was 100 percent contained as of yesterday. (vicki) 2017 is on track to be among the worst fire seasons in a decade. the weather turned very hot very fast in the spring and snow melted much faster than expected. experts say fuel was provided for wildfires because the grass dried out and so did forests. summer

lightning storms dumped less rain than usual and weather conditions kept humidity low. the u.s. forest service and the u.s. department of interior report spending more than 2 billion dollars to fight the fires so far this year. (vicki) a woman is recovering after a fire broke out at her home in pleasant hill. fire crews rescued the woman just after 2:00 this morning. kron four's lydia pantazes reports from pleasant hill on what investigators believe may have started the fire. flames. male shut the garage door and was able to get the female half out of the residence. at some point the woman went back in the residence and had to be rescued by fire. she was transported to a local hospital and was unconscious. her condition was not further known. fd was able to knock the fire and is now in the mop up stage. they will be on scene for a little while fd says. there is heavy damage to the garage. the home sustained some smoke damage. under investigation, no further at this time. (vicki) the bay area has the most dangerous highways in california for coyotes, deer and wildlife.(grant) that is according to a new study released by u-c davis. it found that bay area roads are the worst for collisions and near-misses with wildlife. interstate 2-80 was the worst last year. it saw nearly 400 collisions that cost almost one million dollars in cleanup and maintenance. second worst was highway 101 in marin county. followed by highway 13 from oakland to berkeley researchers say putting more fencing in the worst spots would pay for itself in money saved from cleanup. (grant) workers at the dole food plant in wastonville are bracing for layoffs. the largest producer of fruits and vegetables is closing the plant and laying off more than 4-hundred employees-- more than half work in the fields

police in hollywood are looking for a man and woman suspected of pickpocketing victims while distracting them.. investigators say the man and woman approach their victims and tell them there is bird poop on them and offer to clean it off. officials say as they are wiping the person's back, the man then removes the victim's wallet, a victim of the crime explains the experience. "she opens her purse and pulls out napkins and stuff and starts wiping me down, she poured water on my neck at the

time. i think they were in coordination. that's when i felt this hand over here. i didn't think much of it, because i thought he was still patting me down, but that's when he got the money." both suspects are believed to be between 35 and 40 years old. vicki) parents of a young boy are now searching for answers after he was burned from his school lunch. it happened at an elementary school in oahu, hawaii. the 5 year old was carrying beef stew that was too heavy for him. it tipped over and spilled all over his arm and gave him second degree burns. the school has reached out and apologized to the boy's parents, but his mother still wants answers. it is now being predicted that hurricane irma could create one of the largest mass evacuations in u.s. mystery. some people are choosing to stay in their highrise buildings along the florida coast, even hunkering down in special storm bunkers. >> the highrise luxury condos of downtown miami are facing a direct hit from hurricane irma. >> gary and his family live on the 29th floor. he told our ann mercogliano that they plan to ride out the storm despite warnings to evacuate. >> we bought water, fruit, nonperishables, canned goods. >> he is see towering cranes that can topple in high winds. >> it is not only facing danger from the cranes but residents are wonder will they feel the sway if the winds are strong enough. many say they will take refuge in the garage.
