( james ) hurricane irma... pounding florida this morning as it makes its way north. this is just some of the damage caused when irma made landfall as a category 3 storm yesterday morning. it has now been downgraded to a category one... but it is still carrying winds of at least 75 miles per hour. (james)thanks to a very hot sunday, we're seeing temps this morning still on the warm side with 70s for most locations. it's only slightly cooler a the coast this morning. as for this afternoon, look for partly cloudy skies bay area-wide and slightly cooler temps compared to yesterday. mid to upper 90s is what you'll find inland, with 80s by the bay. coastal highs will be right around 70. it will be feel muggy today as humidity levels are on the rise. we have some monsoonal

a disaster declration for florida yesterday... authorizing the use of federal funds for disaster relief in nine florida counties. florida governor rick scott asked for the declaration earlier in the day.. in a news conference, he said florida is "working very closing with the federal government to make sure floridians have the resources they need." meanwhile, trump praised the relief efforts so far. (james) the president and first lady melania have arrived back at the white house after a weekend trip to camp david with the cabinet. while they were there...the president and his staff received updates about the storm from fema and other security officials. president trump said he

intends to visit florida very soon. (tiffany) local rescue groups are in florida now, ready to deal with whatever irma brings. they will begin ground and water search and rescue operations when needed. also there... members of oakland's urban search and rescue task force. these are pictures of the team from instagram... they spent the day yesterday at the orlando convention center... preparing, resting, and having their last warm meal for a while. once the storm passes, they will get their assignments. aside from all the vehicles and equipment at the convention center... there are also 35 helicopters. (tiffany) also, 82 members of urban search and rescue team task force 3 are in florida. they arrived yesterday after driving 60 hours in an 11-vehicle convoy. their 7 equipment trailers are holding over 60 thousand pounds of equipment, including five search dogs and six drones. they're at eglin air force bace on the florida

panhandle... about 25 hundred miles from home in menlo park. (tiffany) take a look at this... florida deputies rescued two people who tried to ride out hurricane irma on an anchored sailboat. police were able to transfer the two survivors onto their boat. this happened in martin county on the east coast of florida - the opposite side of the state from where irma is hitting the hardest. but rescuers say the waters can still be trecherous throughout the state. (james) reporters brave the elements of hurricanes like irma to bring the story home for viewers. but they're only human -- and as one cnn reporter in naples, florida found out -- not immune to the elements. "this is the most severe gust it's pushing through. you can see the water, you can't even see 50 yards anymore to our right, due to the the amount of water that's being pushed along the street and filling up here.natsthe good news is

we reported over the last days that many of the people here in naples evacuated this area. we didn't see but a handful of people out and about throughout the day yesterday. so that is a good sign.natsbut it is quickly going to turn from me a wind instructional story to this story, here comes another gust, i'm out! woah!" (james) mexican officals now say at least 90 people have died in the historic earthquake that struck the southern part of the country thursday. authorities the majority of those deaths were caused by falling homes and structures. the magnitude- 8.1 quake was felt as far away as guatemala city. troops spent the weekend distributing boxes of food to thousands of survivorsas cargo plans flew in clothes and other supplies. (james) in the east bay... three people are recovering after two separate shootings in oakland. the shooters are still on the loose. the first shooting happened yesterday morning on telegraph avenue. the two victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and are in

stable condition this morning. an hour later..another man was shot...this time on 62nd avenue. his condition is unknown this morning. no one has been arrested. (tiffany) and happening today... people all across the country are marking the 16th anniversary of the september 11th terror attacks... that claimed nearly 3 thousand lives. this was the unfurling of a flag just minutes ago at the pentagon in arlington, virginia. the pentagon was hit by united airlines flight 77 during the attack. (tiffany) and president donald trump is preparing for his first commemoration of the 9-11 attacks. the president and the first lady will observe a moment of silence this morning.... at the time the first airplane struck the twin towers. and later this morning... trump will commemorate the attacks in a ceremony at the pentagon. we will bring that to you live when it happens at 6:30 this morning. vice president mike pence will attend a ceremony at a memorial near shanksville, pennsylvania where flight 93

(tiffany) much of savannah, georgia has been boarded up and closed in anticipation of hurricane irma. but some restaurants like "bar food" remain open. owner john baker says the neighborhood is still full of people. the bar is open and the kitchen is running at full service. baker says he would like to stay open over the next couple of days... as long as he has enough supplies. he says it's fun giving people a distraction from the storm... especially the evacuees

(james) while most kids are focusing on the school year starting... a wisconsin elementary student is getting ready to sell her first house. (tiffany) it's part of her plan to save money for college. from our partners at cnn... amanda tyler has the story... i had a whole vision with this

a vision to flip a house has come to life for eleven year old madison bue.the fifth grader is one of six kids in her family and she knows while college is still a few years away...its never too early to start saving.that's where her grandpa cliff comes in.(cliff lecleir-madison's grandfather)) she said, you know we have a lot of children in our household and my parents aren't going to be able to pay for college so i have to find out a way to do that i have been watching these shows and i think i could flip a house cliff admits-- he knew flipping a house wouldn't be an easy task, but he had faith in madison's passion and work ethic.the pair set out to look at houses--and after eleven houses.. madison and cliff decided on this four bedroom, two bathroom house.they closed on the house in early july-- and that's when madison and her family got to work.along with her grandparents, parents and contractors-- madison has put in her fair share of work in this house renovation.( madison bue))you should have seen it before, there was carpet and we had to rip that out and we had to take out the tack strip and it took a really long time. now we are

( mark ) breaking national news we are following this morning... at least 8 people are dead after a mass shooting in texas. the shooting happened late last night in the city of plano which is about 20 miles northeast of dallas. the shooter was shot and killed by police. neither the gunman nor the victims have been identified but police say all of the victims were adults. ( mark ) two other people were injured in the shooting. police have not said what led up to the violence. ( darya ) happening now... police are searching for the person who shot and killed a trans activist in san francisco. it happened early saturday morning when anthony torres, who went by the name bubbles, was shot six times near the new century strip club on larkin and myrtle street. witnesses

( darya ) a firefighter with the san francisco fire department passed away while at work. co-workers found battalion chief terry smerdel unresponsive in his office yesterday morning. he had just returned back to the station from a call. the fire chief describes smerdel as a dedicated service member who had worked with the department for 26 years.. he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. flags at san francisco fire stations will be lowered to half-staff. battalion chief terry smerdel was 59 years old. ( mark ) the average national price of gasoline jumped in the past two weeks after hurricane harvey prompted the closure of refineries. the jump nationaly is a result of refinery closures in texas prompted by hurricane harvey. the average price of regular gasoline is two-dollars and 69-cents... that's up 48 cents compared to a year ago. and even though california does not typically draw gas from the gulf coast we too are seeing a spike in prices. in oaklanda gallon of regular gas is three dollars and 19 cents. prices are exactly the same in san jose. and san francisco is always the most expensive at three dollars and 30 cents a gallon. ( darya ) happening now... police are searching for the person who shot and killed a trans activist in san francisco. it happened early saturday morning when anthony torres, who went by the name bubbles, was shot six times near the new century strip club on larkin and myrtle street. witnesses say they heard screaming before six gunshots were heard. those who knew torres say he left a strong impression on them and won't be forgotten. ( darya ) police haven't released a description of the gunman.
