(catherine) a big win for - sanctuary cities. a judge ruled today... attorney general jeff sessions cannot follow through with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to so-called sanctuary cities... for refusing his order to impose tough immigration policies. the judge also granted chicago's request for a temporary "nationwide" injuction. that means the justice department can't deny requests for the grant money until chicago's lawsuit against the agency is concluded. chicago refused to comply with the justice department's demand... that it allow immigration agents access to local jails

and notify agents when someone in the u-s... illegally is about to be released from custody. out to make sure this time, when controversial conserviative ben shapiro's spoke thursday it went off without any major violence - unlike what happened back in february. jesse arreguin. berkeley mayor. "it is costing upwards of 100 thousand to 600 thousand." and he also adds that besides the financial costs - there is also the physical costs. arreguin. our officers put their lives out on the line to make sure all stay safe. the mayor adds that the money spent on keeping the peace also means, it can't be spend on residents. arreguin. that means no money for new lights, new officers, fixing issues around the city. and it doen't end there - next week is another event scheduled which could bring a bigger financial burden. arreguin. i am quite concerned, it is going to be a lot. we must protect free speech, but it is a burden. (catherine) protestors in st. louis are holding rallies and marching in the streets...after a white police officer was acquitted today in the death of a black man... and tonight authorities say it's no longer peaceful. a missouri judge found former officer jason stockley not guilty of first degreemurder in the 2011 shooting death of anthony smith. the judge said the state did not prove beyond reasonable doubt that stockley was not acting

spokesman confirms that the alleged triggerman.g arcia-pineda was detained back in aprilbut released by a federal immigration judge who ordered him to wear a gps monitoring bracelet. their records show he failed to check in with ice as required the same month of the murder. in september ice lodged a retainer with the san francisco sherrif's department against the teen after he was picked up on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. but because the city's sanctuary city policy only honors those requests when they involve serious felonies the sheriff's department released him without notifying the feds. . but ignoring ice's retainer request would not have made a difference in the esquivel case, since he was killed two weeks before it came in. those who knew the victim, say the immigration issue is a distraction from what this is really about.we're highly concerned we are out raged and we feel concerned about public safety in general in the sense that police officer's who are supposed to implement our local policy that require that people have gun licenses carry their weapons in a lockbox in their trunk and a very officers that are supposed to implement that are breaking it. that is deeply concerning to us we find a neglectful we find it unacceptablein a statement the police officer's assocation says the officer who's gun was stolenis a highly decorated veteran. they say he is devestated and is cooperating with the department's invesigation into this case. maureen kelly kron4 news.

(grant) and this case brings back memories of kate steinle's murder. in july of 2015... the young woman from the bay was shot and killed on pier 14 in san francisco...as her dad stood next to her. the gun used... was taken from a federal land management ranger just days before the shooting. the suspect is an undocumented immigrant who has been deported numerous times. he is currently on trial for murder.

(grant) and in september of 2015... muralist antonio ramos was shot to death in oakland. that gun was stolen from an immigration and customs enforcement agent in san francisco. a suspect is under arrest and charged with the murder. ramos's family has sued ice over his death. continue to gather at a sacramento elementary school ... to remember three children killed in what police are calling a domestic violence incident. dozens of people joined in a candlelight vigil...to honor an 11-year-old boy.... nine-year-old girl... and an infant... found dead last night in their apartment. police say their father...robert hodges...is the killer. the 33-year-old suspect... is also accused of choking their mother who was inside the west sacramento home at the time of the killing. parents in the area we talked to...are still on edge. (sot) "my daughter, she walked home with them every day, and she says 'mom, they're not gonna walk home with me anymore.' that hit hard." robert hodges is being held without bail - and is scheduled to be in court monday. . prosecutors say charges against him will likely be announced then. berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof says they have been in talks with berkeley patriot group who is behind free speech week, but so far mogulof. there is no signed contract, there is no insurance. there is nothing. mogulof says one reason why the ben shapiro event thursday went so smoothly, despite 9 arrests, was that the group who brought the controversial speaker to town complied with all of the rules set forth by the university. mogulof. this group has not cooperated, we have allowed them to skip deadlines. but. on tap for the berkeley free speech set to start on sunday sept 24 through 27th milo yiannopolous, steve bannon and ann coulter - all three self described conservatives. in a news release to kron four - milo wrote that the goal of this event was not to bring fear but to share unbridled free expression. while a venue has not been secured, mogulof says the group has reserved the outside area infront of sproul hall. last time milo came to speak in february, there were riots, mogulof says all of these events are costing the university a lot of money. mogulof. thousands of dollars.

moraga police department say shawn morris and antoinique bryant stole credit cards and checks from elderly residents at an assisted living center. they tracked down and arrested morris. however... they are looking for bryant who you see in a surveillance photo on the right of your screen. both face more than 20 charges in the case. a couple of mountain lion sightings to tell you about tonight. there has been yet another sighting in san mateo county. the latest happened on sylvan way.... near the edgewood park and natural preserve this morning. there have been several reports of big cats in this area in recent weeks. no word yet if it is the same animal roaming around. and take a look at this. a homeowner got this surveillance video of a mountain lion in los altos last night. police say, the call came in as a mountain lion growling in the backyard... and when officers arrived... there was no sign of the animal. this happened right near interstate- 280. there was another sightning reported last weekend. cal fire is close tonight to containing a wildfire on the peninsula. the skeggs fire started monday night near woodside during the lightning storm that moved through the bay area. the fire has burned 50-acres... it is 80-percent contained.

no buildings have been damaged in the fire. there was one injury by cal fire says it is minor. the skeggs fire is near skyline boulevard and bear gulch road.
