president trump tweeted : "god bless the people of mexico city. we are with you and will be there for you." (anny) our team coverage continues this morning as kron4's charles clifford spoke with a u-s-g-s seismologist about why this quake was felt so strongly -- and about the potential for aftershocks. sotthe first thing we noticed about this earthquake was that it was at an unusual depth.dr. walter mooney is a seismologist with the usgs. he says that's tuesday quake near mexico city struck about 30 miles underground. he also says that the quake produced a powerful jolt rather than the rolling shaking we often feel here from earthquakes here in the bay area. sotand it occurred in a really rigid pacific plate it's going to generate a real jolt in mexico and people will feel this one. sotit's going to feel stronger than magnitude 7.1mooney also says that tuesday's earthquake probably is not an aftershock of the 8.0 quake that struck two weeks south of mexico the two are simply to far apart to be connected.while it's
4:06 am
impossible to say for sure when the next earthquake will hit, dr. mooney believes that there will probably be few if any aftershocks from this quake.sotthis kind of an earthquake typically has a low number of aftershocks. we expect aftershocks but nowhere near as many as would occur if the quake were closer to the surface. sotwe would expect the next one to be more of a typical earthquake. (james) after the latest crime on bart.. an attempted robbery involving a thief handing a threatning note to a passenger demanding her phone and wallet... we decided to look into ways to protect yourself and your family from violent crime. (anny) kron4's spencer blake spoke to a self-defense expert in san francisco about what you should... and shouldn't... do if you're ever in a similar situation. (yelling)kids learning martial arts at untied studios of self- defense in san francisco are already learning, among other things, what their best options are if someone ever tries to rob them.kron four told you about the weekend incident when a bart rider got this note from another rider, threatening her life over her

wallet and phone."it sounds serious. it sounds like someone should be careful about their next steps."the step she decided to takewas to fake a seizure, which grabbed people's attention. "actually a pretty wise idea." at that point the alleged note-writer got off the train. sensei j-t collins says he would've done something very similar if he had gotten the noteand the people we talked to at bart stationswere on the right track."i'd probably scream.""loud voices makes everyone else pay attention, maybe get out their phones." "what would you have done? handed 'em my stuff, because i'm chicken."don't feel like a chicken - collins also stand behind that idea, generally.he points out your life isn't worth the contents of your wallet, nor the price of your phone.other options are to ignore the note, or pretend like you didn't understand it. collins' best tactical advice when there are lots of people around, is to head to an exit -- put as much distance and as many objects as possible between you and the potential robber."never ever go with them to somewhere else. never ever leave the area."collins has been teaching these kinds of defenses and tactics for a couple decadesbut you'll only have seconds to make a decision if a dangerous person targets you. "i encourage adults to think about the decision and think about it

apple released i-o-s 11 for iphones and ipads yesterday. it's free to download and install. but kron 4's gabe slate advises caution before doing so -- as some of your apps might not work with the new operating system. stand up - reporter sound gabe slate"with ios 11 apple is making its final switch from 32-bit apps to 64-bit apps most app developers have known

this was coming for years so they have updated their apps to work with the new software. the most popular and widely used apps will be compatiblebut over a 180,000 apps right now will not work on ios-11"before you upgrade in settings under "general" you can check to see which apps you use that won't transfer over once you run the update. i had a couple games and news apps that did not make it through but i was willing to let these go with the new features the upgrade offers.ios 11 finally brings a customizable control center to i-devices. the control center is when you swipe up and get those shortcuts to the common things you do on your iphone or ipad. now you choose what shortcuts are featured there. with ios 11 you are given another reason to never carry cash people can send

eachother money on the spot in real time thorugh text messages using apple pay. as long as both users are signed up with apple pay this offers a quick way to pass along some cash to your friend or family member without any fees. stand up - sound reporter gabe slate my favorite thing about ios 11 might save lives it's for when you're in the car.. you can activate a do not desturb while driving feature that will detect when your iphone is a car moving and automatically silences notifications. it can also auto-send responses to people that you're driving and you will call them back when you park. siri got an upgrade in this new software the voice assistant can now translate languages including english into mandarin, french, german, italian or spanish.here's a little new tweek in ios 11 that i find handy. when you take a screen shot the image you just snapped hovers near the bottom left corner for 3 seconds offering a shortcut for you to send it to someone right there through email or text. another thing picture related.. you can now turn live photo pictures into a video loop or bounce effect and send them to people that way.. where the images repeat the motion like a vine. and lastly, ios 11 adds an "emergency sos" feature that's designed to give users a quick stealthy way to summon 911 and your emergency contacts should the need arise. to activate "sos" you press on the sleep/wake button of an iphone five times in rapid succession..in san franciso gabe slate kron 4 news

"because they're gonna get to college and think that all of science is only in a book or only on tv or a documentary. and it's not. it's outside. it's out there. and what you observe out there you can bring into your lab and then study."from taking a closer look at water.....to designing their own experiments...sam rivera's students are a reflection of what he calls "hands-on, minds-on" education.
